The official Civilization IV thread

Soren Johnson, one of the developers, says the biggest fix for graphics card issues is to MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL DIRECT X9c when it prompts -- do NOT skip it. Apparently, like 50% or more of the folks with ATi issues skip the DX9c install.

I can't believe they didn't expect that to happen - tons of games have the latest version of DirectX on the install, but most gamers are already up to date, so they skip it

The problem here is that the DX files distributed with Civ4 are part of the developers version of DX, not the redistributable, and that isn't made clear during the install, so again, most people with an up to date DX install skip it, and the game won't work.

But that's only part of the problem, there are still issues well beyond just the proper DX files.

The performance is also annoyingly sluggish in the late game. 3d hasn't added much to the game beyond higher system requirements. Oh well.

"The performance is also annoyingly sluggish in the late game. 3d hasn't added much to the game beyond higher system requirements. Oh well."

I don't think that's a 3D issue so much as a "lots of shit going on + 3D" issue.

I started a game on GameSpy called GAF, password: GAF.

Great idea, but we should set a time, beacuse we need to set aside 3 or more hours :D

Well, this was really just a "quickie" game that me and Danj tossed together out of the blue. But I'm up for a game much later as well. Say...10Central?

I've been chatting with Confusing Jazz, according to him all 3 games he's played he's found judaism in New York.

It's a random thing. Since he's playing the Americans New York is probably his second city. Judiasm is the 3rd or 4th religion in the game.

his first relgion will always go into his capital. subsequent religions go into the 2nd/3rd/4th city by founding or by size, I can't remember.

I founded Judaism in Moscow in my last game.

Was that your first religion? Civs that research a relgion bearing tech first get the religion. Nothing for runner ups and your 1st religion goes into your capital (i think) but I can't be sure.

so the first civ to get meditaiton get buhhdism, 1st to polytheism gets hinduism and 1st to monotheism gets judiasm. Actually, the Mysticism > Meditation/Polytheism > Monotheism research path is the strongest start in the game. It may have to be changed although in the XP.

If you're playing on a sufficiently low level of difficulty or somehow got an insanely fast start, its possible to grab 3 early religions which would pay absolutely massive amounts of gold over time as the religions spread and you build the religion specific temple wonders.

I can't connect to any Internet games.. it just stays at "contacting host" for the longest time...haven't tried waiting till there's a timeout, it doesn't seem like there is one.

it's not by size. or by rank. i founded three relgions fairly quickly while having two cities and the first one went to the first city, but the other two (and later two more after i had few more cities) all went to the second city regardless.

I had this problem once with Civ III and it was because of my router. You may need to open up certain ports on your router.

I think they should make it a real time based strategy.

Also the scope... well I think whoever wins the earth part of the game then becomes the central person on earth, and that's when the real fun of the game begins! Space travel, other planets and other species. Some planets have certain minerals/substances which then open up more technologies for your war machine.

Space battles (with fleets!) land battles! intergalactic diplomacy!

That would be some awesome stuff.

They did, play Rise of Nations :P

rise of nations was pretty good up until the future stuff

that's when the game got all lame

(and wasn't it just earth battles? i don't remember it going into space and stuff)

OMG this game is such a memory pig it's not funny. My system totally starts to chug after a while, and I've got the recommended 512MB. You can hear the poor HD churning away on the swap file. Grrr. :( :( :(

RoN was a mediocre RTS game. If you read Soren's essay in the manual he attacks the problem with RTS as a genre and the concept of playing a Civ game. They're really incompatible. The 'turn' is what makes Civilization unique and its too bad Brain Reynolds had to leave Firaxis to make RoN.

In anycase, just finished my first full epic game. I lost to the English on a space race win in Regent/prince difficulty. It was a competitive builder's game between me and the AI. The AI seems to be much improved over Civ3, lots of heuristic holes in the Civ3 AI were either corrected or is not an issue from rule changes.

Personally I prefer the Total War approach. Turn based at the strategic level in regards to overall empire management, troop recruitment, research, building etc and real-time at the conflict resolution level where the player is able to take a direct approach to organising and managing their troops in battle rather than the outcome being determined on the basis of some algorithm.

Just won by Domination Victory!

"This is awarded when you have a 25% lead in population over their best competitor, and 65% of the global land mass."

It triggered as I conquered my continent, which was the biggest of the land masses, and was beginning my amphibious assault on Ghandi and razing his cities.

8 hour 45 mins.

I would agree but Rome Total War also has minimum specs that that run at the very high end of what is required to play CivIV. And i actually really enjoyed Rome Total War because its so damn fun, but it's not a Civ game for me and its period specific, meaning you're macro strategic decisions aren't as sweeping or open as a Civ game.

90% of my Civ games are on the macro strategic level. Deciding tech paths and where I want to be in 50 turns, balacing happiness, food, plotting against a rival, playing one AI against another. When I go to war, I don't want to spend another hour playing my units. I just want to move that tank I built against another enemy unit and hopefully my tank wins.

Okay, I've gotten my issues with playing the game resolved. The biggest problem was that the patched together collection of functionality known as Windows had somehow gotten itself into a bad state. Reinstalling XP resolved my blue screen issues. Funny because none of the hardware or drivers are changed - installed them from the exact same CDR containing the drivers for that box.

Anyways.

The good.
========

Its Civ :)

Religion adds a whole new level of complexity to the game and foreign relations - actually had to go to war over it.

Much improved combat system though some funky situations still exist between advanced units and more primitive technology ones.

More in depth tech tree

Better empire border model and ability to improve all over the interior of your empire without having to drop cities all over the place

The bad
========

Its supposed to be streamlined, but it doesn't really feel that way

The game is a LOT slower to play than I remember any previous CIV game. Lots of load times, lots of wait times especially late in the game

Lots of glitches and bugs make the game unpleasant to play in certain ways.

Considering this is a turn based game, the system requirements are unacceptable IMO.

i dont feel that economics are really that important in Civ4. I remember in Civ2 watching my cities go bankrupt and having to setup good internal trade routes between my cities, and find out what each city has and what each city needs. But there doesn't seem to be any of this in Civ4, if it is there it is automated.

Yeah the system requirements are lame, and the performance is poor. I'm hoping a few patches will fix up the glitches, leaving a bug-free but probably still somewhat pokey game

In spite of that, the game itself is great, so I can't complain much

RTS games are pathetic period, but that'd be a whole separate rant, I don't want to pollute the Civ 4 thread with it.

I'll just say that Kohan is the one and only true superior RTS ever released, period, and no one since has done anything that appeals to me at all - and I've played various popular RTS games heavily competitively in the past. They just suck. Bleh.

rant off.

Ahh, the wait is intolerable. Not out here till Friday. And I've an assignment due the following Monday morning :lol

Civ2'a economcis was a micromanager's nightmare. It was desired for small maps where you may have 5-10 cities. Any large empire with 15+ cities and managing those trade routes is a disaster in micromangement.

Civ4 reintroduces trade routes, but they are automatic. Techs and diplo agreements add new routes. Economics is very important in Civ4. :) There's even a set of civics dedicated specifically to that.

They can make another tile based Civ game but I don't fault them for going 3D as a tile based CivIV might be too niche for what they want it to be. Civ was always a more mainstream 4X game and a tile based CIV might be closer to a Europe Universalis in terms of appeal and sales.

Overall your right about the game slowing down later in the game, but there's enough options provided to turn down for it to run ressonable. I find AA and screen res makes the bigger impact on performance.

6800 Vanilla, barton 2.5Ghz, 1GB of ram.

Have you gotten into the late part of a game yet? It starts off great, but as the game goes on it gets progressively sluggish.

Tycho Brahe is one of the great people in the game.

Is there any reason I wouldn't be able to capture a city after eliminating the units defending it? I'm on the verge of finishing off Russia, but none of my units can enter the city even though I've destroyed all the units defending it. When I try to go there I just get the red circle indicating I can't move there. There's nothing obstructing the way, or anything.

EDIT: My Athlon XP 2800+ with 9800 Pro and 1GB of RAM plays the game at a good clip at 1920x1200. I'm in the late 20th Century and it's still running as fast as when the game started.

I'm really pissed about the 3D card requirement, this game should support as low as possible when it comes to display cards, cuz its a PERFECT laptop game, and not lots of laptops has 3D accelerators...

Well I did say I just won a domination victory lol. And that's my second time through. First was a time victory, all the way through 2050 ad, domination victory took place roughly 1970s.

Not experiencing the sluggishness that people are talking about. And I play FPS games and moan when I get less than 60fps.

Is it just me or can you only have Elephants or horses and not both? I have horses in my territory, the workers have done their thing on them (they show up in my resources), and i get elephants as part of a trade deal (haha sucker Persians, Ivory for Wheat ) but only elephant units show up on my build menus.

btw, is that Al Gores face on the icon for the Internet wonder? :lol

Wow, Pretorians are awesome. Wiped out a civ with 10. Just wish I could get Iron sooner.

(was playing on the 3rd from noob difficulty)
