The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

anyone else have a problem with the PC version when live is down? It's down for me currently and I can't load my game, it just has the option for "new" game :(

yeah, i can only access my saves when signed into live. which is LAME. i mean, the disc is in the damn drive!

also, anyone tried sending voice msges over live to 360 users? i recorded a msg, played it back to myself, it sounded good, sent it to my friend, and he didnt hear a thing as if my mic was turned off.

anyone know if that functionality should be working? and if so, why it didnt?

I've just started and I was wondering if there were any guides that help get you on your way. i went to that school first and all I found was a dead end in an ant's nest. then I went to Megaton and talked to everyone and am about to hack Moriarty's terminal. however I've been playing for quite a while and nothing has actually happened yet in the way of much fun or action. when does the game start?

when you adventure into the wasteland and do some quests? i felt like the game started the moment i was born. but then again, i know exactly what to expect from bethesda when it comes to progressing the story at my pace.

so then the game starts when you want it to. :lol

I want it to start. it's not doing anything, just lots of people spouting non-quest dialogue over and over and the occasional raider in the wastelands. don't try and pass this off as if I'm some console instant-gratification noob who can't comprehend the "brilliance" of Fallout. at the moment the game is slow-paced to a fault.

You can go to Moira's in Megaton as soon as you get out of the vault and get some side quests.

I knew I wasnt completely fucking insane. I did indeed pick up a lot of Alien Powercells after the meteor. Any idea what triggers it? Because I reloaded a few times trying to see it again but it never triggered after that first time....

im still on my first playthrough (lvl 11 paladin) and i think the first thing i did was moira at the craterside supply, who asked me to go to the superduper mart for her. she has a whole line of quests for you. then of course theres always the main quest, just exploring the topography (it goes on forever) and finding all the interesting things there are to do in the wasteland. trust me, theres plenty.

I feel the same way, the game should let you play your save's whether your singed into live or not, if the 360 can let you play your games that way why is the PC getting shafted like this? or is this some really serious bug?

It takes a while for the 'load' to pop up. What I did was hit the 'Home' button and then hit it again and it should appear. Just give it a few seconds.

On the PC version there will be a folder in the saves directory with your gamertag as it's name. Copy the files from in there into the saves directory itself, not into a sub folder and you can play your live game offline. I did it, told it not to over write the Fallout.ini, restarted Fallout 3 and i had "continue" as an option, chose that and i was standing looking at Moira Brown just like in my Live save.

Dont' know if it will work if you copy your offline saves into the Live save folder. Don't want to risk my awesome count of 3 achievements and gamerscore of 40 either :D

If you compare the main story and the side quests in Oblivion to Fallout, Fallout is a lot better. In the big scheme of things neither are amazing, I have problems with both... but Fallout is a huge step forward. Any number of side quests in Fallout are better than whole guild quest lines in Oblivion.

My main gripe with the "story" of Fallout is that everything is a reference, everything is almost a Bethesda take on these scenarios. The slave trade town with the collars on little kids, the android quest line, little lamp light, the Tenpenny/ghoul quest,
catching the computer in a logical paradox
... and I'm just talking about the shit that I finished in the last couple of days. All these things are nice, but I'd like them to come up with some original stuff.

Whichever controller you like better, 360 looks slightly better by most accounts although I say it's not enough difference to override controller preference. Looks good on both. Also if you care about Bethesda's claim of "substantial" 360 exclusive DLC then factor that in.

FWIW I got the 360 version and I love it.

I got the PC version but if I had to pick one, x360..

you can soon install the whole thing to HDD + it looks better?

Hate to say it but it seems like X360 is getting a major resurgence in interest from me. I might need to get a 60gb console new. My old one is hardly played because I think it will red ring.

FALLOUT3 comparison

48 Second load down to 25 load. Timed the loading times for transitioning between inside and outside game environments
. Before installing the game, these transitions took about 20 seconds; afterward, it was halved.

I was a huge fan of Oblivion , and one thing I got to say about this game is that the side quests are more fun and diverse, at least to me they are.

What.

Are you mad? I play 3 feet away from a 32" screen at 1920x1080 and I have honestly not even noticed any poor textures in the 40+ hours I have played this.

I mean, yeah they aren't super high res or anything and you can easily find some pretty poor ones if you look, but really, calling it 'one ugly game'? Considering it's a console port I found it to be absolutely stunning and I never once felt the need to pick apart it's presentation (aside from the wonky animation and models, which are still much better than Oblivion).

Consider that I also played through Crysis like a dozen times at 1080p on ultra high and that should give you a good bearing on just how fucking nuts I think you are.

no you're nuts... this game aint a good looking game, I run it all at the highest, as a matter of fact I run just about all my games at the highest settings,Crysis looks great but it aint all that. This game just doesn't look that great, its running on an old engine(that wasn't that great to begin with), thats been pushed too far. Love the game to death but it just doesn't. I honestly think Left 4 dead looks far better and cleaner on the technical side...Fall Out 3, not so much. And the console port comparison... Play DMC4 on PC, that game is jaw dropping.

BTW... ugly may have been pushing it, there are definitely some good looking aspects, but I can't help but be disappointed in some areas. I really want a full texture mod like the ones that enhanced oblivion.

What's the payoff for completing the fire ants quest? I'm under Marigold Station and it's a fucking nightmare with the amount of ants. My best weapon is the hunting rifle and I've only got 9-12 bullets left.

Also, is the Rock-It Launcher worth the ~1200 caps?

I think I've run into a game breaker of a bug?

HANNIBAL HALIM related.

so basically, I've done everything to do for his quest and I'm meant to meet them at the
lincoln memorial
but everytime I go there.

a) he's not.

b) the arrow/directs me somewhere near a subway station

and I can't seem to trigger the event that brings them to the
lincoln memorial

...

WUT?!

*btw the
oasis
was hell of a lot of fun + nostalgic when you run into
HAROLD+BOB
I was so torn by that quest.

Common problem. I've faced what you've described myself. The trick is to fast travel to the nearest Metro station, Mall Northwest. If they don't show up, you can try 2 things:
i.) fast travel back to Temple of the Union and trigger their departure, then fast travel back to Mall Northwest.
ii.) fast forward time at Mall Northwest if you've already witnessed their departure but they have yet to reach Mall Northwest.

Basically, Mall Northwest is the ending point for this quest, and not Lincoln Memorial.

For anyone thats done the Republic of Dave stuff. Confused about something...

Is it possible to rig the election? I got Bob and Rosie to enter the election and vote for themselves. So Dave ends up getting 3 votes, Bob 1, and Rosie 1. Then I steal pickpocket Daves 'special key' but it only opens the safe - not the ballot box. Surely there is a way to get the ballot box open before the election ends, otherwise whats the point of all that shit with Bob and Rosie?

edit, I figured it out. /dumb

edit 2, ok what the fuck is going on?

I managed to get into the ballot box by crouching next to it with a stealth boy as dave was opening it, and I stole the 2 Dave votes. Then Dave said to himself "what? Rosie won! Im leaving, see how the like it without me" etc. But then nothing happens, he doesnt leave and Rosie didnt become President.

Any ideas?

Definitely saturated myself with this game and barely did any of the main story :(. Forty five hours and I don't see myself finishing it any time soon. Oh well, it was fun.

So I beat the game, played a good 'charisma' based character

The game is fucking amazing, I can say that much, the ending is actually how I would like it to be, you take part in the ending instead of watching it occur

I would like to see
some RESULTS... I mean come on show me the world getting better due to my fucking efforts >.< my ONE complaint... aside from the glitches

I will replay the game definitely, I know I have barely seen anything the game has to offer, but once I got to the point I knew the end was coming I got into it

I can't wait to see the speedruns this game has to offer, I think the most time consuming is the intro, after that you can just rush straight to the finale, it wont be as fast as the first one I am sure but I still think for a game that could consume hundreds of hours their will be some intense times achieved!

Oh, I also
found dogmeat on my way to finish the fucking game... I mean come on THAT late in the game? LAME! I was even at the scrapyard in my first 3 hours!

I can't wait for Elder Scrolls 5 and Fallout 4 now!

Such a sad day..

I finished the main plotline and whatever I happened to encounter along the way at 55 hours today. Only half the achievements, though so I know there's lots of secondary quests to do yet.

It's really a shame about the ending. It seems very rushed. It also seems to limit any DLC packs to adding things to the world, and not adding to the story.

Overall the game was excellent and almost exactly what I wanted from a modern Fallout game, but that last area of the game is not a satisfying end. Even Fallout 2's ending had more specific closure to the areas you visited and actions you took.

I'm sad because the game I've waited 10 years for is over. I know I'll be replaying it, but I hoped the main quest was about twice as long and used some more memorable locations like Junktown and New Reno. Megaton and Rivet City were cool, and Paradise Falls as well, but I think it could have used 2-3 more cities like them with quest lines involved. Maybe with DLC we'll get that.

In the end, it's an A game, only losing marks for those typical Bethesda technical issues, and the last bits of the game being somewhat disappointing and lacking that sense of closure.

Im sure it has been mentioned already, but I just realized if you get a killing blow headshot with the Railway Gun, it nails the head to whatver flat service is behind the target. :lol

At about 50 hours played, my interest in the game is finally fading, so I was looking through the achievements to see how many more I could grab before running through the last few main quests, only to realize I never got the achievement for finishing "Scientific Pursuits". Quest shows as completed, and I've got the "Tranquility Lane" one, so I don't know why I didn't get credit for that one.

Anyway, it put me in a bad enough mood that I wound up slaughtering most of Arefu, Rivet City, Oasis, and Megaton in order to get the "Doesn't Play Well With Others" one; turns out you can go from 'very good' to 'very evil' karma in about 50 cold-blooded murders.

I'm playing on the 360 and I think the game is just fucking beautiful. And this is next to games like Mirror's Edge, LBP and Gears 2.

Just got past
deactivating and self-destructing the Enclave HQ
and am now wandering the wasteland with Fawkes now before heading back to the Citadel. Too bad I lost my other follower, some Paladin from the Brotherhood.

But Fawkes is so awesome, and I'm still enjoying the story in this game. I thought it was going to take a turn for the lame, but nope, still good. Sure, it's not as mysterious and sinister as you go through the plot but I still feel very vested as a player.

Also have been playing around with energy weapons (plasma rifle) and using power armor. The Enclave power armor looks so bad ass. And the graphics in this game... my god, sometimes I can't believe that this is actually an RPG.

Picture time. Spec ops!

Yep. People looking for faults will find faults. It doesn't excel (or in some cases is even passable) when it comes to textures, effects, or animation. It is however, much more than the sum of it's parts and has so many jaw dropping moments. That is why I say to those who downplay it's beauty: try seeing the forest for the trees.

Besides honestly, most of those user made texture packs I've seen for various games are nasty. There is more to good texture art than using a sharpen filter 4 times or taking a photo of dirt and calling it a texture. They also often mess up whatever specific visual atmosphere the game tries to convey.

Generally it is agreed that Fawkes is the most powerful in combat. The weakest will be Butch, since he starts off with a switchblade and a 10mm Pistol, but he will scavenge parts from dead mobs. Clover and Jericho will get my votes for being in tier 2, and RL-3 and Cross are just opposites - RL-3 has weak defense but good offense and Cross has weak offense but good defense. I will put both RL-3 and Cross one tier below Jericho/Clover but better than Butch. Well Butch does have one unique function, he can give you a haircut at anytime.

Your 2nd follower can be either Dogmeat or Charon. I'm not sure if you can have them both at the same time. I would say Charon is better than Dogmeat for his default weapon is Combat Shotgun, he can wear power armors and best of all he can carry equipment, something Dogmeat is not capable of.

Yes and yes.
Not sure if you need to KILL Dogmeat, maybe you could just leave him at your house or something :|

Also Fawkes is RIDICULOUSLY overpowered. The bastard just doesn't die. Deliberately trying to kill him took about 3 mini nukes! He's at least as powerful as a goddamned behemoth!

But I basically did what Nick said with, looking for faults will find faults. The game still looks great when you focus on the big picture, instead of the smaller details.

I keep getting distracted by sidequests and general exploring. I've logged maybe 20 hours into the game and I have hardly started it.

How do I get followers and how do I get the dog? Only potential follower Ive come across is Jericho, although I only just got to the Citadel re: main quest.
