The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

The Intense Training +1 SPECIAL perk is one of the best perks you can choose. Especially additions to luck. When picking luck you are getting +1 to every individual skill, thats +13 points overall. Which is much better than a bunch of those perks that give +5 to two skills. Plus you get the bonus of more criticals and anything else luck is factored into.

Here and Now is basically just a waste of a perk since you'll eventually gain that level. You're just missing out on one actual perk that gives you some benefits. Hell choose the strong back perk (one of the lamest perks) over Here and now!

I also have a question. Game says educated perk is good early on because you get +3 skill points per level. But whats the difference in skill points added per level from +1 INT. Isn't it better to pick Intense Training and put it on Intelligence (Up to 10) instead of educated? Because a higher INT gives you more skill points per level.
Luck skill bonus maxes out at +5 (at skill 9). Intense training generally isn't all that useful as one attribute point increases 2-3 skills by 2% while a skill perk increases 2 by 5%. Of course stats affect other things, but generally negligibly. Personally I think it's best to start with 9 luck, 10 int (or 9, but getting the int bobblehead can take a while) and not pick intense training at all unless you need it for perk requirements.

As for educated, it gives +3 per level while one point of int gives +1. Not starting with 9 or 10 int is a mistake though.

Could someone tell me how I can get my
own house in Megaton? I really need some place to storage some stuff. I finished the Blood Ties quest and am doing the second part of the Wasteland Survival Guide quest now. Oh, I am not sure if this has anything to do with getting your own place, but I killed Burke.

I love the game so far (about 9 hours in) and sometimes it feels like I'm playing the videogame adaption of McCarthy's The Road. It is awesome.

Just disarm the atomic bomb and you should be set.

I want to be more awesome. :(
I plan on having multiple characters, so I'm not too annoyed, but it would be neat to become stupid powerful. Although, I'm only level 10 now, and I'm starting to feel like a bad ass.

finally started playing, hit a hard crash on my save
no matter what i did, the second i walked through a particular door - BAM
green check board crash.

i looked to check for RRoD , but nothing.

after 6 retries, i've started gain, no problems. :(

This looks to be my GOTY so far. Last year was Mass Effect so I guess I can say that I'm really digging the Western RPG output in this generation.

Is it ridiculous to be putting my stat points into small, big, and plasma weapons? Right now I am working on small and big, but i love the sound of a good plasma rifle.

So... has anyone stumbled upon a city with actual people living there? Besides Rivet City and Megaton, I have yet to find a place where more than ten people are living. All I see is bandit camps, slave camps and abandoned shit. Am I doing something wrong?

Just started playing yesterday, so far I seem to have spent more time trying to create a decent looking character than I have been actually playing.
Tried to create a Mad Max lookalike, but wan't too happy with the results.. decided to go with a girl instead and finally managed to create one that I think I can stand playing as;

You created Amata!

I shot that bitch in the face after she told me to get out after saving Vault 101.

Cold blooded.
I was shocked that she told me to leave. I had just saved her, the vault, let her father live, and she thanks me by showing me the door. I just left. Amazed.

She has one hanging breast.

so I got some power armor or something, and it says I need proper training to use it. Anyone mind telling me how get said proper training?

Hey, pringles..how did you managed to take a pic of the front of the character..
I hate that you spend a good amount of time creating the face of the character at the beginning; yet you barely see it during the game..

Hold 'f' by default and move the mouse around. It's just like Oblivion.

Loving this game so far and have played about 18 hours worth, but i'm a little worried that all of a sudden the game will end and I won't be able to go back and do the side quests. Can anyone give me a rough percentage of how far I am through the main story. Or at least let me know if it's obvious when the main story is close to ending?

I have just finished all the Vault 112 stuff, talked to dear old dad and told him to go alone to Rivet City.

Any info would be very appreciated.

Ugh, I'll repost:

So how long is the main campaign roughly?

How far along am I?
I just got to Little Lamplight and the Sheriff kid is telling me to rescue 2 kids before he'll let me in.

Am I halfway through, or far from it?

I just finished it. I'm surprised you can't keep playing after you've finished. I kept a save, so I'm not too bothered by that, but I know my friend (an Oblivion 300hourer) will be bothered by it. How can they do DLC?

The ending
was bullshit. I was in the room for like 20 minutes on RadAways and Rad-Xs while I was LOOKING for the damn purifier. I should have been able to survive. I hate forced stuff like that.

The game was great though...decimated Oblivion.

You're like 80% of the way through.

I guess I got the most noble ending.

What pissed me off most is I saved that Fawkes guy and he joined me,
but he refused to go in to start up the purifier based on some destiny bullshit. WHY DO I HAVE TO DIE!? Why couldn't he just go in, turn that bitch on, and then chill in the radiation until he could come out? I'm sorry, but that was incredibly stupid.

Did anyone else go this route? I was so frustrated by that.

Thanks Kev. I have no idea how long I've been playing but I feel like it hasn't been that long.

Add me to the list of people who weren't Oblivion fans but are sucked into Fallout 3. Back to playing!

I need advice, GAF. I'm one of the people who bought the PC version (mostly for the better visuals) and my game constantly crashes even after days of trying "fixes and tweaks" from over at the official forums. I'm at the point now that, with no word from Bethesda on a patch ETA, I am thinking about going out and picking up the 360 version tonight.

I tried looking around at pics online and reading reviews etc, but does anyone have any advice here? Is the graphical step down from PC to 360 going to be huge? It is really pretty on mostly maxed settings on the PC, but the pics I have looked at online of the 360 version look really really good - and I just don't think I can sit around on my hands another week waiting for a patch that may or may not come?

I guess I really just need incentive/dis-incentive to go out and drop another $60 on the game O_o

Thanks to the people who answered my last questions.

Am I the only one who finds this game really damn hard? I keep dying against groups of like 3-4 raiders, am poor as shit(can't even afford a whore!), and lose heath like my armour is made if tin foil. Any tips on this?

This game has great characters though, I really wanted to
blow up megaton
but I don't think I can now. I like that place too much.

Well lets just say, I have a 3 year old PC and it looks only a tiny bit worse than the 360 version. At least in my opinion it does, I'm not one of those people who matches them up side by side and counts each pixel.

What are you running it on? The only crash I get is sometimes when I exit but seeing as I'm quitting anyway it doesn't bother me.

Oh I won't bore you all too much with the whole why I'm crashing thing - who knows really. I've got a pretty common ( I think ? ) setup - a quad core AMD, 8800GT X 2 in SLI, 4G ram - but everything I own runs perfectly fine including Oblivion actually. There are tons of people having this crash problem on PC apparently! I just don't want to wait any longer to play the damn game lol.

I pretty much hated the ending, too.
I wanted a Fallout 1 and 2 style of showing me what happened to all the places I had gone and the important characters. Like, what did Amata do now that she was Overseer? What happened to Fawkes and Dogmeat? Did anyone else try to take out Megaton? I had so many lingering questions.

Definitely do it on an alternate save or something though. It's quite spectacular. I went on a murder spree right after because it put me in the mood.

What is the
"Head of State"
side mission? Is it still available if you
tricked Eden into destroying the Enclave
?

The only ones on my quest log right now are Moira's annoying tasks and going back to Vault 101, I'm looking for a few other ones to do first.

No it not. I have alot of points in small guns and repair, more in plasma than big guns though. I just hate vapozing enemies with the plasma guns so I can't take their shit :lol There is a perk I think that adds points to small guns and repair everytime you level up I believe. My guy is so accurate with a hunter rifle. I blow heads off consistently on my first VATS attack :D

No, you can still search the ashes. Same when you turn them into goo with the plasma rifle.

First post in this thread and I've got to say.....this is the game of FOREVER. Fuck the haters. This is a great game as a FPS. Its awesome with Vats.

Avid Fallout player. Hated Oblivion. Love Fallout 3. Best RPG this gen so far. Fuck the rest.

I'm really enjoying this a lot, I must admit. While I did enjoy Oblivion, I found that its world became tiring and repetitive rather quickly. That sense of wonder when you first leave the sewers left me rather quickly as much of the landscape is dull while most of the larger cities were divided up into tiny chunks with annoying load times.

FO3 is so much more interesting. The simple act of exploring the wasteland is actually entertaining as the world is so beautiful and varied. Furthermore, the underground areas all seem to have purpose in that they connect various parts of the world together. Oblivion presented far too many dungeons that looked virtually the same as the last without introducing anything unique or worthwhile.

Also, the combat IS actually a lot of fun. I thought VATS would be cheap and boring, but no, I really like using it.

The whole experience is really impressive and addictive. The fact that I'm getting a rock solid 60 fps, no skipping/stuttering anywhere, and virtually no load times only serves to enhance the illusion of an open world. Honestly, I can't recall EVER playing such a massive game where I was seeing perfect performance from day 1.

This is where I'm coming from too. I thought Oblivion was terrible, but the Fallout games are my favorite RPGs. Bethesda really pulled this game off. There are some minor hitches but with games like this those are always there and the first two weren't free of those either. Props to Bethesda for turning my opinion of them around again back to where it was after Morrowind came out. Can't wait for Fallout 4.

After I did that,
I stole the keys for Fort Constantine from Crowley and checked it out myself. I thought it worth it to go check out the fort.

Haha. I dunno. The main quest wasn't really that long. I did a sizable chunk of sidequests and beat it in 21 hours. I am gonna go back and play more...good thing I kept a save.

The main quest in oblivion was much longer (though much more shitty).

I know the PC version is best and cheaper, I'm not sure if I would rather play it on my 32"tv or my 22"pc lcd.

are the PC controls good?
