The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

i wonder if they'll do any downloadable content, as they did for oblivion. or if that would even work here.
They said they are and that it will be substantial. But for Fallout 4, I want to see a different part of the country. We've seen California twice, now the DC wasteland, change it up again. Do Chicago. Or somewhere in Texas. Or Alaska, since it's important in Fallout cannon.

The mouse/kb controls are perfect in first person perspective. The GUI is obviously a console port, but unlike Oblivion it's at least somewhat adapted and works at least as well as I expect its console counterpart to.

I know the PC version is best and cheaper, I'm not sure if I would rather play it on my 32"tv or my 22"pc lcd.

Very good.

I can't imagine playing with a controller with that game. Navigating in the pip boy without a mouse should be tiresome.

I think it needs to be said again and again. The dialogue in this game is so damn perfect and funny.

Moira: Oh? Feeling a bit under the weather? Or a bit over the Geiger-counter?
Main Character (from choices): I'm about as irradiated as I can get without burning a hole in the floor.

I'm kinda at a loss what to do in the Lamplight Caverns.
So the kids say there's a Vault in there. Only door I can find that could lead to it says its a door to a reactor. You need a key for it though and I can't find out how to get it.
. Anyone figured it out? I'm afraid
I already soured the relationship with the sheriff kid a little
.

I been playing the game for a while on the PC and it just feels like a modified Oblivion. Definitely enjoy aspects of it, but if one isn't into the whole Oblivion-feel, they'll hate this game.

you can only get in when you do the storyline quest where you can either
get the geek kid to power up the pc which you hack, or get the mayor to open the pathway which is full of traps and super mutants

Yeah Chiggs, the Talon Company has tried killing me twice now. :lol

Ditto. Met them in a destroyed house once and another when I fast traveled to a location. Their armor is fairly good to use early on in the game.

Thanks a bunch. The geek
kid is Joseph, I assume? The one that also offers to be a barber? I can take him to the computer terminal then I guess? The mayor isn't really talking with me anymore, I think he isn't gonna help me anymore :/

Question regarding the fire ant quest:
I'm now in the Metro. Now where's the ant nest? I can't find it.

Oh yeah, the game is awesome.

EDIT: nvm, I found it.

So what does the annoying beeping sound and screenblur mean every couple of seconds. High radiation?

They're great. I hooked up a 360 pad and tried playing a bit and couldn't stand it but if you get it for PC and prefer the 360 pad the option is always there.

Great controls. Also I forgot that the melee system is basically the same as Oblivion's. The combat system feels so much better with the really clear shots, thick thuds, and nasty slices. Feels like you are really doing damage.

Oh, dont think there are any real permanent storage spots. Just try to put stuff in a desolate area I guess.

6 hours in and I'm currently working on the
Wastlands Survivor Guide
quests. They definitely seem to be worth it for the rewards.
Not sure how useful these auto-regenerating limbs mutation is, but it sounds good. Haven't left my limbs alone long enough to see how quickly they regen.

Can't say enough good things about this game. I hated Oblivion, sadly, but this game has me draining away the hours without thinking about it.

Freaking awesome as hell.

Put this observer in the Mirelurks nest...why can't I kill them Moira?! WHY?!

It seems like most of you guys have gone down the quest route. Anyone else here just running around and doing quests intermittently? First thing I did was run out into the world and kill, kill, kill. I've slowly progressed through some quests but always end up falling off the course and exploring the area more. My character is at level 5 right now but I've got some quality gear that is level 22 and up. Pretty bad ass stuff but I can't even use most of it yet. :lol The Fat Man has saved me so many times I can't count.

Holy shit, I discovered two families of incestuous cannibals :lol; I broke into their basement only to find bodies all cut up ready to eat. When I came out of the house, the two couples confronted me and I had quite choices to make

  1. Tell them they are sick fuck and kill them all in a flurry of gunfire
  2. Pretend that cannibalism is totally okay and fine with me and can I go now?
  3. Tell them I like human flesh too and I'd like to join them for a snack

:lol I ended up repaining the place up with their blood. Their kids ended up being adopted by their grandpa who lived across the street.

edit: choice 3 gave me the option of getting free human meat pie from one of the ladies :lol :lol

I did that to start with, then at level 6, I decided I want to see what DC was like. Now, I think I'm going to do some more exploration and see what I can find. I'm particularly interested in the north west quadrant of the map, but I don't know why.

Yeah I'm still on Following in His Footsteps and I probably won't get around to it until much, much later.

Exploring is so damn addicting.

I was in a situation like that once. I was crippled and badly out numbered (with low ammo), so I went along with it. I think it's for the best, since it doesn't seem like something they can easily control.

Haha. I dunno. The main quest wasn't really that long. I did a sizable chunk of sidequests and beat it in 21 hours. I am gonna go back and play more...good thing I kept a save.

The main quest in oblivion was much longer (though much more shitty).

Wow, I've probably put that in that many hours if not more, and I have about a 1/4th of the map covered. With that said did you leave it on hard or medium? Anyhow, I've done a few side quests so far as well which have taken up a good bit of time. I don't know if it is because I left on hard or what, but ammo had just been tough to keep up with even with the perk. All in all this game has been great and a time eater.

Totally what I'm doing, just exploring and doing quests that come along. Kinda like a roving mercenary. I haven't touched the main quest since leaving the vault, and at this point (25 hours in) it'll probably be 100 hours or more before I start it.

There's whole sections of my map that I've not unlocked a single location in. The northeast quadrant seems especially devoid of locations, on my map I mean. I think I'll head up there as soon as I return a violin to an old lady.

This has sold me on the game, this needs to be on the back of the case 'MEAT THE CLEAVERS! accompanied with an in game pic of that basement. 4 million seller guaranteed.

Oy!

Head of State quest, I need a picture of the Lincoln Memorial, quest arrow points me to the Museum of History
with all the ghouls
, where can I get it? Feels like I've looked everywhere.

Interesting dialogue option I never noticed, apparently with a high enough speech (mines just over 60) you can convince Moira to
cancel production of her book, if she agrees you'll get 200XP for completing her quest line, a rather large discount on repairs, and a new perk that causes you to get crit by enemies only half as often, plus a Karma downer.
I ended up reloading a previous save after I did it though because
I liked doing her quests and the awards associated with them
.

On another note, does giving purified water to that bum outside Megaton ever amount to anything, or is it just a permanent source of Karma enhancement? Actually, what do you get if you ask him in something in exchange? I always give him a water or two for free because I assumed it was going to lead to something better.

Did you try using the local map? Same thing happened with Oblivion, entrances on the compass would be a bit away from the actual entrance.

Yeah, I had trouble with it, too. It's a huge poster on a wall on the second floor, I believe. If you have trouble seeing it, turn on the PipBoy's light.

Thanks. Goddamn Mammoth must've obscured the door before. :lol

I went there and immediately knew something was wrong. I expected to find these kinds of people, but they all said EXACTLY the same thing, and "strange meat" indeed.

I killed all those bastards and knew what I was going to find in the basement. The fridge just affirmed my suspicious.

I think if I had the child perk I could of said something to the kid though.

*I also feel that the game is just too easy. I've played on Very Hard the entire time and don't run into anything difficult. At level 10 I'm still in the general areas with 3000 caps and 400 ammo for all my weapons which I have 2 of in perfect condition. Oh and 120 stimpacks.

I haven't run into the BoS or the Enclave yet though.

I still need to travel to GNR. :lol

I don't know if anyone has asked this yet, but...

How do you adjust the resolution? The game automatically launches at 800x600 and my native resolution is 1024x768. There doesn't seem to be any way to change it in the main menu.

EDIT: Never mind. Found it!

Open up the CD and find the FalloutLauncher. Make that your shortcut.

edit: kewl

You have to use the launcher to edit many of the graphics options, including resolution.

By the way, has anyone found a fix for the framerate going from very high to randomly dropping to unplayable numbers? For example I'll have a very good framerate when I load the game, but then if I turn around 180 degrees it becomes unplayable until I turn around again. Using very, very low settings seems to fix this but I don't want to use very, very low settings. I'm pretty sure I had Oblivion looking better than this when I played it with my x800 :(

I'm thinking of starting over with my character.

Does anyone have any quick-links to posts about skill point choices, or any good guides on the web?

Or maybe I should just experiment myself..

There is a slaver in paradise falls who keeps giving you UNLIMITED ITEMS ranging from meds to ammo to caps, no guns. If you have the patience to keep initiating a convo then you could easily stock up on enough shit to sell. He hands out a really good amount of stimpacks too but it's totally random. I made a good 500 caps in item value in 10 minutes due to getting a ton of stimpacks in a row. This is the closest thing to an easy cap cheat that I have found in the game so far.

The only catch is that I think you need to be at least Very Evil in karma status for this to work. I had talked to him when I was just Evil but it wasn't untill I killed 3 travelling salesman and robbed the fuck out of them and thier guards that I became Very Evil and he started giving me stuff.

At my 26th hour of playtime I finally got to Rivet City..... I think I've already surpassed my Mass Effect playtime, and from what I can gather, I'm still at an early stage in the main quest.

Played this for the first time today (PC) and I gotta say I was pretty damn impressed. I never really cared for Oblivion and it's cliche fantasy world and never played Fallout 1 or 2. The world seems pretty big and each encounter with an enemy seem to be quite thrilling. VAST brings such a different POW to the regular first person shooting and I have to admit that it works pretty well.

Graphics are sweet, sound got some kick behind it and controls simply work. Only minor detail that bothered me was the look of 3rd person mode as the character seems to be floating around but I got used to it pretty quick.

"it seems the super mutants won."

"did they? that board with a nail in it may have defeated us. but the mutants won't stop there. they'll make bigger boards, and bigger nails, and soon, they will make a board with a nail so big, it will destroy them all"

Pretty much the route I've taken.

I'm now a level 12 evil defiler.

Now I've got regulators after me.
