The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

How many 'cities' are there in the game?

I'd consider Megaton and Rivet City as 'cities'. Arafu is pretty much just a little camp. Are there any other self contained cities in the game? It really feels like there's not many places to go in this game.
You need to get out and visit the wastes. Theres plenty of "settlements" and ruins for you to uncover. I'd say atleast 10 out there. Look for [Old Olney]...that place is guaranteed to put some hair on your ass.

ahh cool, I can finally get Simms out of the saloon where he's been rotting for weeks.

I'm loving this game so far. But to be honest, unless you really hate the medieval setting Oblivion has, I can't see how you could love this game and not Oblivion. This is just a better version (gameplay/content) of Oblivion, in another setting and story etc.

Hit the nail on the head.

Plus guns >>>> fireball + bows

I LOATHED Oblivion.

The setting and general atmosphere play a big part. But the characters, voice-acting, combat and level-up system make the game infintely better. I've said it a mulltion times before: F3 = Oblivion fixed.

I think, ironically, the Wasteland is less "empty" than the Empire. I liked Oblivion's quests and the more interesting NPCs, but when I played Shivering Isles, well... it was kickass in comparison despite being smaller. Dungeons had stories and purpose, they didn't feel like they were made with a tileset with enemies selected from a list of Goblins, Raiders, Undead, Animals or Daedra.

Small amounts of quality content > Lots of soulless content.

Let's not forget that Bethesda has been following this trend for quite some time. Daggerfall was the size of Britain, but it was all pointless. There was plenty of ground to explore... but why explore it? In Oblivion I only ever explored the dungeons that seemed a bit more interesting; Sideways Cave et al. When I play Fallout 3 I sometimes just get the desire to go out there and just fuck around to see what I can find. And I find stuff. Interesting stuff.

The setting isn't particularly relevant for me, the game is simply a hell of a lot better.

OH,
Life's worth living.
du du dudu
Life's worth livin
BANG!BANG!BANG!

as human heads explode from point blank shotgun blasts.

I totally love this game now.

There's a contradiction in this statement. If Phoenix Wright was around... While I didn't loathe Oblivion, I did think it was a failed experiment. It was a step down in the fun factor (while a step up in other areas).
I really can't wait for their next RPG project as I'm sure the developer will have learned from this experience as they did with Oblivion.

I'm a small arms guy, but I picked up a mini-gun?

Hello Second Playthrough.

The Broken Bow has got to be the glitchiest level in this game. Monsters getting stuck in the doorway, running through closed doors and also appearing/disappearing randomly. I'm having a blast with Fallout 3, but the QA for this is pretty lackluster.

Ugh a friend of mine is playing this right now, well I saw him play it a little bit on his pc, he's more of a 360 gamer and wants to get F3 on 360 anyway, but still.

He's playing this like an fps and never used vats untill I told him to use it, otherwise he would certainly die. He kept wasting ammo and I was cringing like argh just hit the V button...

but w/e :P. I'm getting it in this week on 360, woohoo!!

I think if anything the setting puts me off this game, I know it's supposed to be desolate but I think the reason fantasy RPGs do so well is that they are generally set in naturally beautiful places that are, in a small way, uplifting to play in, which makes it a hell of a lot easier to slog through 40 hours of it. The Fallout 3 over world is kinda depressing to walk around and I generally find my self spending as little time there as possible.

I guess I'm trying to say I think the Elder Scrolls narrative compliments this type of game a lot better.

That said I agree Fallout 3 is a far better game than Oblivion. I just hope their next game is set somewhere a little more pleasant.

Do you have to train in all different types of armour? I looted a dead brotherhood member and took his power armour but needed training to use it. All I have is leather at the moment.

it's not so much 'the medieval setting' i hated about Oblivion as it was 'the incredibly over played setting'. to make my point, compare the fantasy world of Oblivion with the world of Morrowind. Morrowind was much more imaginative with it's architecture and scenery. Shivering Isles showed that Bethesda hadn't forgotten how to make unique fantasy landscapes, they just didn't for Oblivion.

Oblivion's world is just ye olde Tolkein ripoff compared to Morrowind's.

not having played a Fallout game before helps obviously, but even so, a massive expansive radioactive wasteland stuff full of bizarre creatures and stuff to stumble upon is brilliant. i haven't even done the main story quest that takes you to capitol city yet but i've done a tonne of other stuff. i see stuff all the time and find myself wondering if it's scripted or not.

down to the south east is that Wharf East of the Megamart. further East is a mined bridge across the river. I went over there to hear two guys arguing about whether or not a mine was live. I come running in. one of them seemed to freak out and stepped on a mine and exploded. the other took off running back towards the wharf...

across the mined bridge...

only bits of him made it to the other side...

even if that is scripted to happen, the fact i wasn't sure is what made it awesome.

I pretty much beat the entire game with leather armour and a chinese assault rifle on normal difficulty. Just sneak around and the game is a cake walk, critical damage with sneak attacks.

Holy shit at the "Waters of Life" quest. I'm surprised, Bethesda have actually been able to pull off exciting, engaging set-pieces in this game (another very important thing Oblivion lacked). Awesome stuff.

Is the My First Laboratory worth buying? Just seems to make random Chems, or is there more to it than that?

At a later point in the story, and not before then as the area is inaccessable, you will be able to train in Power Armour. This allows you to wear Power Armour of any kind. PA is the only armour that requires training.

Don't worry, when the option to train is opened up, it will be fairly obvious. You'll be able to ask about it as an option in dialogue with nearly eveyone in the area.

I feel kinda bad, I missed out on the dog and a few others things it seems. I mostly followed the main quest but I did about 5-10 side quests.

BTW - can you keep your stats for a second playthrough?

Some random stuff I thought was funny:

- There's this girl in Girdershade that wants you to hunt down Quantums. But her horny neighbour wants to plow her badly. With the Black Widow skill I offered him a treesome if he hunts down some Quantums too. He gets all excited, runs away. I follow him, only to see him get his head chewed off by a Yao Guai :lol . He carried a Kneecapper which is a pretty awesome sawed-off though. The Coke girl seems totally oblivious the dude has died though.

- I went to the garage that hides
Vault 112
and ran into a fucking party. Two Fallen Brotherhood dudes with a Protectron. A hunter chasing a wastelander. I guess those hunters hunt literally anything. Anyway, I waste the hunter for the wastelander, wastelanders makes a run for it. In the meantime the Brotherhood fella's walk in on Sentry Bot but fuck it up pretty good. Exit Sentrybot. Then a Yao Guai charges them, and a giant Radscorpion tags along. Guai kills Brotherhood, Radscorpion kills Guai, yours truly kills Radscorpion and takes the loot. Crazy times.

- I think I accidentally set off some
nukes or something
while at one of those satelitte dish thingies.
I typed in some coordinates I got from a ghoul scientist I killed, activated some stuff, went out and the sky went all white and there were some loud noises and stuff. Wonder what that was all about. In the notes of the ghoul it was mentioned there might still be some weapons in the stratosphere or something.
In other cases I'd think a car had blown up in front of me but there were no cars near the dish.

I dreamt about this game last night... For some reason in my dreams I was sadistically crippling people's legs and leaving them there to die a slow painful death.

...fuck I can't wait to get home and play this some more. My new dude's proficiency with small arms and big guns is surely going to cause a lot of super mutant blood to get splattered on the walls.

And is it just me, or does shooting a guys face off never get old? On my new guy I blew
The Overseer's
face off and it jumbled around the room like a pinball. It's satisfying everytime.

Every damn time :lol

I don't really feel like I'm enjoying this game as much as I should be. Once I got out of the vault I basically just wandered around killing raiders. I've yet to run into any other normal people and I've been playing for a couple of hours. Is the whole game like this? Any tips to help me enjoy it more?

Guys might be a stupid question but...

how do you get in the
aircraft carrier city when Three dog
tells you to go there

I spent nearly an hour trying to figure this out.
There's a little building structure across the river from it, with a guy who wants pure water. On the same level as the guy, there's an intercom. They send out a bridge. I felt stupid.

Don't feel too bad ....I honestly haven't gotten into Fallout3 yet as I'm still distracted by Dead Space and Far Cry 2 ....that and the whole PC-Only Frame rate skipping/stuttering issue has tarnished it a bit in my eyes. Especially since it's been a problem with the engine since Oblivion!
That and I think the gunplay outside of VATS just isn't good =/

Why? The fun of a game like this is to play a completely different style of character, there is only 20 levels max so its impossible to have played both a buff character and a smart character, I focused on Charisma based stuff this playthrough the next one I will probably go for the heavy gunner type.

The beauty of a game like this is that you can play it over and over, and they stayed true to Fallout by not having it continue after the ending like in Oblivion (the point of the Fallout games was you could make a new game, rush to the end, or experience everything there is to experience)

Without giving away any spoilers, when does money finally become prevalent? My god its hard to come by money and selling these poonanner guns for 30 caps is terrible. I find myself using a lot of stim packs and purchasing them is expensive.

It just feels like coming by money in this game is rare.

I am still within the first 10 or so quests. I am just now
Heading to vault 112
.

Go to Megaton immediately. It's marked on your map.

I'm not sure how you're playing, but there was a point where I had roughly 25-30 stimpaks on me and I didn't need to buy any for an extended period.

I got all these buy doing nothing buy
Moira's book
quests, both primary and secondary objectives as well as stealing and prodding people (high charisma).

I was never swimming in money on my first character, but it certainly wasn't hard to come by as long as I kept selling raider armor and guns.

I found money to be more than abundant, its everywhere, and if its not just pick up trash and sell it to a merchant. I have 8000 caps right now and havent bought anything other than repairs for a long, long time.

I beat the main quest, and aside from Megaton/Tenpenny, Rivet City and the Vaults, I haven't really done that much in the way of sidequesting.

Am I, as I feel, only scratching the surface thus? Are there, as I suspect, a ton more areas with quests and the like?

I'm definitely going to try a second, more enlightened playthrough now I know how things work.

I have it, and it's an awesome gun, but for some reason I'm sitting on it until later in the game when I'm going to need a better rifle.

Oh yeah. There are tons of side stuff in this game. I've paused the main quest right now and am exploring the north west section of the map. So far it has proven dangerous, but enjoyable.

It's not the same at all. Oblivion has the most broken leveling system ever seen in an RPG. Fallout 3 has a very competent leveling system.

Oblivion sucks a big fat nut.

Well where you are "right now" is it where I am "right now?" Otherwise when did you start to have >2,000 caps

I do slightly regret getting the "Fast Learner" perk, as it seems to only shorten the amount of time I'm building my character.

Perhaps on my 3rd guy I'll forgo getting the "level up faster" perks and stick to just making him amazing.
