The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I think it's more certain tactics are effective against certain enemies rather than certain weapons, with obvious exceptions like the Fat Man against Behemoths (and anything else).

Someone earlier said the Flamer was especially good versus super mutants, but I haven't tried that. I carry a Flamer around but always forget to use it since I have other stuff bound to hotkeys.
What I've found works best for each are:
-Automatic weapons against Super Mutants
-Plasma/Laser against Enclave
-Laser against robots
-Anything against raiders/people, really

Edit: oh, and Plasma/laser for deathclaws, too.

Jericho and Dogmeat will attack anyone on sight who comes up red and is an enemy (Jericho will often spot them before you do and say something like "oh shit, here we go!"). So if you attack a friendly, Jericho and Dogmeat will attack them even if they start running away from you. Dogmeat will actually chase after them, too, which is awesome.

Damnit, I want Bad Karma! Jericho KEEPS telling me I'm a pansy even though I've wiped out like 3 settlements and stole countless items.

Guys can you MISS or screw up any Main quests by just randomly exploring. I'm on the first main quest and have about 20 hours or so. I've just explored and done some side quest!????

You can't screw up the main quest, but you can skip parts of it. The main quest eventually takes you to Rivet City, but if you wandered there by yourself like I did, before GNR, you might accidentally skip something.

I purposely avoided asking about my father to not miss anything.

Zeliard said:
I didn't say it wasn't effective at all, I just said it wasn't as effective as some other strats, especially when faced off against a group. If you're up against raiders, one's running at you with a baseball bat, one is at mid-range shooting at you with an assault rifle, and another is far off sniping at you, it wouldn't be very smart to take all of your VATS shots at one of their heads unless you like using up stimpaks and ammo. That's when it becomes a better idea to mix it up and start concentrating more on nullifying the enemy attacks. On Hard difficulty, at least.

In that scenario, I'd VATs headshot (1shot) the melee, then VATS 2shot (head head) the mid-range. If midrange wasn't dead I'd polish him off with realtime shooting. I'd then duck behind something to recover AP, then I'd VATS head-head-head the longrange dude.

*shrug*

Worked for me so far.

Holy shit.

Early main quest spoiler.
I was in the museum getting the dish when I walked into the planetarium. I was watching the presentation when suddenly two super mutants appeared behind me. Surprised me, but in such a good way.

I love this game.

Don't worry nothing wrong with all head.

And whats with this head-head-head shit? I get 5 shots off with a full AP bar. I can pretty much kill two people and injure a third or kill a super mutant and injure a second with one VATS, on Hard.

Ok now i just found something awesome. In the uper left corner of the map you will find a nother "ford" compelte with satelite towers. Eventually you stumble over a rocket code well well now you can launch an epic rocket atack on some spots nearby ... it just looks awesome (i didnt find any quest related ;) )

Ah and btw. i know its been asked before but where can you get the power amor training ??
AND why can jericho wear the power amor headgear but not the amor itself :lol :lol

He's at the Citadel. You can't get there until much later in the story. This needs to go in the thread title.

Weird. Although the brotherhood guys who pointed me in his direction said that he wouldn't do it unless the head gal gave him permission. So I don't know if something else has to be done first..

At least you could find him. I half expect to find him at the bottom of a pile of rubble now
stop dying on me you morans

Those brotherhood bastards lied to me! They said he was up around the lab at GNR! Grr. See? They are all dumb-dumbs.

I have to wear this now because I'm too poor to repair my good armour.:lol

Being a good guy is hard in this game!

Edit: Wow those jaggies look awful in that screenshot, thank god it isn't nearly that bad in-game.

That's pretty badass looking. I'd love to see the slowmo's with VATS with that helmet on. :lol

The Enclave soldiers carry them. They use the same ammo as the Laser Rifles.

Where do I find them? I'd love to clear GNR at level 13 with a plasma rifle :lol

Also thanks for the heads up, I was actually headed to Rivet City right now, but I still haven't done GNR yet.

There is a trick to stealth, sort of what I'd call a bug or design oversight.

When you are crouched if you have always run toggled you're still being hit by stealth checks as if you are running.

Turn off always run when crouching, stick to dark areas/hours of the days, get your stealth >50 and you will find it very effective.

Once I figured out the tricks I was stealthing right up to Deathclaws and 1-hitting them with the custom combat shottie.

Easy sniper rifles:

Arkansas in Minefield has a sniper rifle. Unless you get a miraculous stealth kill on him it will be zero condition by the time you get your hands on it, though.

There is a chapel in the nw corner of the map, you can get it added to your map by talking to one of the people in arefu after completing the blood quest. Perched in that chapel is a gentleman with one of the two custom sniper rifles in the game. Quicksave before the encounter, I've heard of one instance where the body went haywire and they couldn't get the rifle.

Thanks so much for this, just went on an hour long trek up to where you recommended, got my sniper rifle, together with my scoped .44 magnum I'm now an unstoppable long range machine :D (until I run out of ammo)

My experience must be different, but I found a Laser Pistol and Laser Rifle almost immediately, when I stumbled upon 2 Brotherhood of Steel Paladins fighting a bunch of Super Mutants. I just looted all the corpses after they finished :lol

Hah, I gave those to my henchman. :D

I also got to level 20 and I've only just entered the Brotherhood for the first time in the main questline. :(

They could've tweaked the exp a bit better IMO, feels like I get/got way to much for hacking and lockpicking.

I did this exact thing. After I talked to
Doctor Li about my father
, it immediately finished the "Following in his Footsteps" quest and gave me the next one. Worse, I didn't get an achievement for it! But... luckly I went back to GNR and was still able to do the quest there and once I finished it, I got the "Following in his Footests" achievement then, which was weird. Also, instead of giving me info about my dad, Three Dog gave me
a key to a hidden weapon's cache out in the wasteland
.

I think this is intentional balance - for peeps that wanna do "no combat" runs.

I've sunk to a new low GAF...I'm about to sell one of the cornerstones of my nation and one of the most influential documents in history to a delusional old man for the measly price of caps and 20 gamerscore. Fuck you awesome game that makes me feel bad. Fuck you.

You don't have to give him the original declaration you know.
If you get the robot some ink from the Arlingtion library he can make a perfect duplicate. Delusional old man's happy, robot's happy, everyone's happy. Also you get good karma. :)

Nice. The load times are not very bad to begin with anyway.

Initial load is like 4 seconds, and after that it's instant if you die and load a save (on PC). Loading new areas is like, 1 second, if not instant.

Does anyone have any idea where the friggin' armory in Rivet City is?

I got the laser pistol very early on, but I don't remember where or how. Still haven't seen the laser rifle yet.

Btw, if anyone was wondering whether or not the "scrounger" perk is worth it, holyyyy shit. Like, seriously, holy shit. You will find FUCKTONS of ammo with that perk. Ammo will never again be an issue to you. And I'm not just talking about typical rifle/pistol ammo. You will get plenty of normally scarce ammo like rockets as well. Incredibly useful perk.

Just did the Tranquility Lane quest today. Just WOW! I played through it the most evil way possible and had a load of fun - but my Karma took a massive hit. I'm now a 'Very Evil Ne'er-Do-Well'. I was a 'Neutral Observer' before that quest.

Also hope dad didn't mind I tried to kill him several times while he was a dog. Whoops!

Game keeps on giving the awesome! ^_____^

Yes it is.

Super Duper Mart has the laser pistol.

I just did the blood ties mission (early Megaton mission, no real spoilers), and pretty much played both sides to get all the rewards.

I went into The Family's lair and made my peace with Vance. I talked Ian into leaving, then to Vance again who rewarded my honesty with a fire sword schematic. I negotiated a truce with The Family, went back to city where the people were being terrorized(i forget the name) and gave them the truce. At this point I gained a massive positive Karma boost (which I was going to need).

I went back to the family and talked Vance into giving me a new trait (+20hp from blood packs instead of +1), and then killed him and all the other members of The Family. I got his shishkabob (fire sword) which would otherwise be a pain to find the materials to make, looted plenty of ammo and money, and robbed their store which had grenades, weapons, armor, and about 200 caps. I also got an absolute tonne of medical supplies.

So all in all I got everything to be gained from the mission, maintaining balanced Karma, keeping a city safe and wiping out a cult of vampires, but not before learning their secret.

Good times

First, a rant. I think this was part of EvilLore's point. There is sometimes a very "narrow" path to completing a mission -- or more to the point, required ordered solution. I'd prefer a more "open" path to completing things...I hate the fact that characters in game "know" events even though they are NO WHERE in sight when shit goes down.

So, I find the family (finally). I kept doing this mission, and early on,
I killed vance, and the family but also "freed" Ian. I also looted the hell out of it and as I was leaving got the "You are an enemy of The Family and (Ian's town) Arnem?" So I'm like WTF - I dunn killt that mofo for you bitches and I'm your enemy -- how is this "fallout like"? They should be sucking my dick for killing all their tormentors. So, I eventually (like after the 10th try) figure it out. I also plan on going back to nuke those fuckers...interesting that you got the flaming sword. I got the schematics for shiskabob (is that it). He also had a vampire blade sword in his room. I don't recall him actually having the flame sword. I'm concerned though if I kill them all, since they're now protectors will I be able to go back to Ian's town.

Oh also, after completing the mission -- recall that West chick in Megaton asked you to do this -- ungrateful bitch gave me jack fucking squat for my troubles. I should kill her...I was glad I "figured" it out, but my earlier attempts should have been equally viable solutions -- keeping in mind, I took a shit ton of negative karma.

Otherwise, this game is indeed awesome...it reminds me of Oblivion, which I loved...which is why I again have gone the way of stealth. :)

Okay so you are on the bridge going into Rivet City...

There are two doors - the one straight ahead says Rivet City Market Place, the one to the left says Stairwell.

Go in the stairwell door. Once there, walk up all the stairs to the very top of the stairwell. There should only be one door there, and I think it says something about the Bridge Deck. Go in that door.

This is the area where all the security personel sleep, and eat. Don't go out of any doors in this section. The doors will be marked 'Rivet City' - they just take out to the outside portions of the ship.

Anyway, there should be stairs which go up, keep going up the stairs and going up the stairs. You'll see a room with a floating army robot, he will actually tell you you don't have permission to be in the armory and he would hate to shoot your or whatever. The armory is right behind him, there is a locked door.

Hope that helps.

Can anyone please elaborate on what the items that go in your
house in Megaton do? For example, Workbench is used for creating items, but what exactly do the Infirmary and the Laboratory do? It wasn't very clear to me, just like it wasn't very clear that the workbench wasn't used for repairs--only for using schematics...

Thanks!

Fallout 1 had the scrounger perk as well, but I don't recall it being nearly this useful or effective. Bethesda went crazy with that perk. It will net you tons of various ammo.

That better not be the same robot that guards the Megaton armory. That dude is simply not fooled by Stealth Boys, and I'm trying to steal the
Rock-It Launcher
schematic from the Rivet City one without pissing off the entire city.

Perfect, thanks. I can easily picture it. Must have just walked by it at some point or not even gone up those extra stairs.

Got my lunch box today.
Very impressed by the supreme awesomeness of the thing.
Probably one of the best CEs devised in recent history, IMHO.

Indeed. I love how much EXP you get for hacking/lock picking so I always look for opportunities to do so.

I'm level 14 and I JUST now decided to go to the GNR building (of which that entire encounter to get to that point is FUCKING AWESOME).

Just finished Reilly's Rangers. The rewards for some of the side missions are pretty good, in this case bottle caps for every area of the map discovered.

Where do you go for:

The Superhuman Gambit
Those!
Head of State
Oasis
You Gotta Shoot 'Em in the Head
Agatha's Song

????

My only active side quest right now is the stuff for Moira. Even with a lot of wandering to reach areas for side quests I've only got fifty areas discovered. The side missions are practically another whole game. This might replace BioShock as my favorite single player game so far this generation.

It's funny you mentioned that because I was looking for her (to get a reward) and I found her corpse near the bomb in Megaton. I have NO idea what killed her.

My mistake in this playthrough was to take the Swift Learner perk, which gives you a 10% boost to experience you get. I only took one rank of it, but it would've probably been better to take the leveling more slowly. Not to mention take a more useful perk.
