The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Wow thanks man!

Just found dogmeat, and while I was trying to get out of the scrapyard, I saw three brotherhood outcasts walking..I thought...hmm :p

Killed them, took all their armors and repaired it. Now I have a pretty good power armor! Too bad I can't use it yet, I know I have to wait for the main questline thing for that, but I love exploring too much.

Just picked up the quest Agatha's Song as well :D

I was searching for the scrapyard for at least an hour last night, found Agatha's Home as well so I must have walked right by.

This game needs some kind of explore mode that automatically sets your marker to the nearest unexplored landmark.

Ok, I am wondering if by chance I fucked myself:

I was doing Moira's book quest before I was gonna do the GNR mission or w/e it was where Moriarty told me to look for dad.

When I was finishing up her quest by going to Rivet City to research their history I spoke to the doctor and she told me to look for my dad at Jefferson Memorial. I went there and got the holo recodrings leading me to the Vault 112/Tranquility Lane mission and meeting up with my dad

Now the GNR quest or whatever it was (Following His Footsteps??) is no longer available. I see in the 360 achievements list that completing that quest gets you an achievement.

Did I screw myself because I can't do it now?

Where is Paradise Falls? I still haven't found it yet.

It is east of the river, north of vault 101. East of
little lamplight/vault 87 & north west of germantown.

That's actually what oblivion had...would have been nice in this as well though..

But that map that Sennis posted really helps :)

Yes...you can do it on the next playthrough though!

There are markers on your compass (triangles that aren't filled).

I love how the game's quests are laid out. If you find an alternative solution, the game adapts and doesn't force anything really unnecessary down your throat. It's like, "hey, you found this out early, well you don't really need to do this and this now." Never before have I played an RPG like that (besides FO and FO2).

I did the exact same thing on the PC version, and assuming the achievements unlock the same, you aren't screwed. Just
go to GNR and talk to Three Dog, and the achievement should unlock and you'll get the GNR mission
.

yeah but those don't help you with which one is closest, so (as I must have done last night) you just pick one and end up wandering straight past the place you were looking for.

That would completely defeat the purpose of actually exploring, especially in a loner setting such as Fallout 3's where you're often on your own, fighting for survival. It would screw with the immersiveness. I'm glad they elected not to babysit the player this time around - it was one of the most annoying things about Oblivion.

Besides, there's a perk at level 20 that shows you every location on the map.

I agree. My enjoyment of the game comes in a lot of ways from the unknown, especially when I find those random little places that don't seem to pop up on my map as a marker. There's one I'm hoping I can remember until I get home from work so I can go explore it. :D Then it's off to save Ridley's crew. I was trying to find my way to her base when I stumbled into L' Enfants Plaza, which really drained most of my ammo. But that area was so cool.

Yeah, did that myself. I just reloaded the autosave from when I walked in to the lab and didn't talk to the bitch again.

To activate the PC achievements do you have to sign up again (website and such) for that Live crap or something? I already get the log-in spam when I start FO3 up so what was the point of the mini-sign up.

OMG buy a fucking strategy guide if you want your hand held. This would be a terrible idea and ruin the fun and point of self exploration.

The pointers are on the compass anyway, this way they'd just be less fucking useless.

Che, those screens look pretty good. what specs you running on right now?

Once I got used to the NPC facial closeups, FO3 began to resemble a very gorgeous game. I like it much more than FC2. Of course, nothing can touch Crysis but that game is a freak of nature -- a miracle where a tech demo can actually be a AAA shooter.

Anyway, I'm running FO3 at 1920x1200, 8xAA, 15xAF (or whatever the max is), Ultra everything and v-sync on.

PC specs are Q9550 @ 3.8GHz, 8GB DDR2, Radeon HD 4870x2.

It's running at 60fps indoors and outdoors. One of the few games where I can just set everything to max and not have to worry or even think about framerate. Lovely. I also have become really attached to the character I created. Her face actually resembles the character I created last holiday for Mass Effect so I'm pretending a little that she's like, the same digital actress in a different epic action/adventure movie. :D

Ok, this is weird... I'm following
Liberty Prime as he makes his way to the Purifier
, and he seems to be stuck on the left side of the bridge and he can't get out!! I've tried moving forward and fighting and even using the wait function (where he starts to move, but can't get anywhere), but no luck. I might have to go back to the last manual save :(

I respectfully disagree. What you build there doesn't look half-bad but I think the character models are pretty bad. If it would look like ME (and present itself the way that game did) F3 would be my game of the forever.

One quick question, does the Fallout 3 leveling system work like Oblivion did where everything else leveled up with you so your level didn't really matter that much?

If it does it's much less noticeable, I still run into enemies I ran into at level 2.

If you want to know all the locations, someone posted a map with them earlier. File, print. We don't need any more WRPGs holding our hands. Fallout 3 having some clear, specific waypoint marker that says "hey! you haven't gone here yet!" would be some sad shit, especially when Fallout has always put an enormous emphasis on exploration and finding your own unique way through the game. The way it's set up now, it simply gives you the general compass direction of an undiscovered location. I'd rather they not even have done that, but it's effective for its limited purpose. I never even look at those triangles.

I know Bethesda is the antithema of everything that is anime and the Japanese manga aesthetic, and so naturally many kids on this forum would find FO3 instantly hideous, regardless of its visual strengths. So you'll notice I said in my post that it took me a little adjustment period to get used to the character models too since it's been a few years since Oblivion. That said, it didn't take me long. I guess I've been playing a shit ton of western games over the last 5 or 6 years (FC2 and Crysis being the last two western games with gorgeous visuals and take-it-or-leave-it character models) so I got accustomed to the world of FO3 pretty quick.

And yes, I think the blame is partially on Bethesda for making its character generator so prone to creating hideous faces. It took me a while to get one that I didn't mind staring at for prolonged periods of time. I even like to play the game in 3rd person view now when I'm just traveling. Doing auto-walk and then panning the camera around, zooming in and out as you travel, is pretty cool.

I don't want to know all the locations off the bat, I just want to know which one of the compass indicators is closest. The 'sad shit' you so fear, is already in the game, but I forgive you for not realising, because you never look at triangles.

I dunno what happened to the "OMG NEVAH GON GIT OUT ALIVE" during Reily's Rangers... I fought all of like ten mutants before I met them.

Your screens looks great Che. Much better that was i was expecting. I though the game was terrible looking (official screens and consoles screencaps) but i might get the game on PC now

Do you have difficulty with reading comprehension? The "sad shit" I'm referring to is your suggestion for something more specific, not the way it is now. The small triangles are fine, since they're apparently limited enough to force people like you to have to actually explore.

My game looks pretty good (720p/medium/no AA or AF), but yours just blows it away.

Very pretty pics.

wow... just finished the Tenpenny Tower quest. I opted to
cast the bigots out of the tower so the ghouls could move in. I ended up getting quite the reward for it, 500 caps from Tenpenny, 500 caps from the two store owners I kicked out, and a ghoul mask from Roy so the ferals won't attack me anymore.... that alone was worth doing it this way. I hate those damn feral ghouls.

How do you get those shots of your character like that? My third person view won't let me swing around to the characters front.

Public Service Announcement:

You can actually make a decent third-person camera if you zoom in (hold LB then press up on RS, not sure how on the PC) closely enough that you can no longer see your player's legs below the knees. Once you can no longer see the terrible walking animations, it's surprisingly decent. Like Che, I often use that view when exploring the wastelands, though in tight quarters and combat I go back to first-person.

Eh not really an achievement whore. It just made me question if that was important and that I was truly missing out on something.

Ok, decided to just get it at Target since they had it for $39.99. Seems to run fine aside from the occasional crash.

Quick questions: I notice NPCs have a limited amount of caps for selling things to them. Do their caps eventually replenish or can you only sell so many things to them before they have no money unless you buy something.

Are there things that respawn out in the wastelands so they can be farmed for valuables/money?

How did you guys solve your weight problem?

I went to the springfield elementary next to megatown, and by the first floor I was already overweight! By the time I cleared up all 3 floors, I had 720/210 weight. Walking so slow really got on my nerves but I didn't want to make 4 trips just so that I could finish the school.

After I finished the elementary, I went back and got the house and stored what I didn't need in the locker. Does the locker have infinite space or will it tell you it's full?

How are you guys handling your weight issues so that it doesn't resort in to something tedious?

chespace said:
Exact same outfit is me :D My guy aint that hot though :/

I'm happy to see some appreciation of this games aesthetics. Many of my friends claims Oblivion had better atmosphere than Fallout, and I couldn't disagree more!

The "animation", or maybe character behavior, is still far from top notch though, which saddens me a bit. Guess it's become a part of what we know as the Bethesda touch ;)

Personally I'm on a year old gaming pc, 8800GTS, 4gb, yet the game chose "high" as my graphical settings, and it runs smoothly! I haven't peeked at the settings, probably not at "ultra", but still looks damn good!
It only takes 3 seconds to load as well, so I'm truly amazed by Bethesda's work on this one!

Btw, how do you move your camera around like that? And how to hide the HUD and take screenshots?

Coverly said:

I only pickup things I consider worth carrying. If it weight 10lbs, but is only worth 5-10 caps, screw it. I also "prepare" for exploration before I leave whatever town im at by selling uneeded items, etc. I like to have about 150lbs free to pickup stuff I find. Then when I am at my limit I fast travel back and sell. I find I have plenty of caps, wouldn't say I am rich but I can afford what I need. I have like 30 stimpacks and tons of ammo.

Coverly said:

I repair duplicate items as your retain most(?) of the value and the weight is cut in half. (e.g. take two raider armors and repair them into one set that's worth more.)

It doesn't force me to explore at all, quite the opposite it encourages me to stick to the quests because they negate the frustration.

What it should do is encourage me to explore (which Fallout 3 already does in many ways) instead of tricking me into it by giving me limited information.

Damn this game is fun, eventhough the environments seem to offer little loot to find unless you go inside caverns/schools/whatevers.

Anyway, I have a ton of loot I want to drop off in a save location, is it possible to get a safe house in Megaton? If yes, how?
