The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

For the record, I have retail copies of both versions, and the 360 one looks noticeably better. And I'm the sort of person who hardly ever spots these things, because I find technical comparisons incredibly tedious, and think that the gaming press in general focuses on it far too much.

But yeah, if you own both consoles, you have to get the 360 one, unless for some strange reason you have a semi for the PS3 controller. There's a significant difference in visual quality.

Its not stupid when its advice that works. 95% of the time you have multiplat games that are either worse or as good on the ps3. So, best bet is to always go with the 360 version for early adopters.

Of course, im referring to people who have both consoles.
95% maybe after deeper test, because lately visually are the same, really the only reason to blame it's to be a nerd.

Sad to hear. I hoped psm3 was wrong, bethesda fuck you. If possible can you explain what its better on 360? Just to know.

That was a year ago. Multi-platform production is already changing to the PS3 for lead development platform, as seen in games like Burnout Paradise, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge (wait, I'm seeing a trend here...), etc.

Its certainly closer to Fable than it is to Valkyrie Chronicles, even if it does feature some turn-based elements in its combat system. Decisions have tremendous weight, more weight than the original Fable, and it is much much less linear than the aforementioned game also. Have you ever played any old school Western RPGs, like say maybe Planescape Torment?

No I've hardly played any RPG's to be honest, but a game in a similar vein to Fable no matter how remote and in a setting like Fallout 3, makes me stand up and take notice.

People are never gonna learn to go with the 360 version of multiplats. This has been proven time and time again. I solely blame the weaker video card inside the ps3.
Yes and no. There have been plenty of instances as of late where the PS3 versions of games are every bit as good.

I would assume that, as FO3 is a GFW title, it will include 360 controller support. That's actually my biggest hangup on the PC version. For a slower paced game like Fallout, I want to be able to sit back in my couch and enjoy it from a controller.

Is it really that obvious? The difference?

Im planning on getting the PC version, so is there any way for me to unlock achievements on the pc version to be applied to my xbox live account? Or do i have to play the game on the xbox to get those achievements?
Yeah, thats pretty much the point of it being a GFW Live game; the achievements for the PC version will be the same as for the 360 version and they'll go onto your overall gamertag, I have Halo 2 PC which uses the same system and its quick and painless, it'll have to recover your account on your PC once and then its all good.

I would assume the same thing, especially since its not only GFW, but GFWL.

Wow, that's awesome. Is there some external application i need to install? I have vista ultimate sp1. Do you do the sign-in through the game menu or do i have to have something like steam?

MS claims that eventually some out of game thing like Steam will come out, which would be awesome for sending voice messages to my buds on their 360s from my PC and such, but currently its all in-game. Its all really slick in Halo 2 PC though, signs in automatically when you launch the game, has your friends pop up like on 360, you can always bring up a dashboard, etc. Pretty much works like it would on 360, except you can only access all those features in game--I'm guessing it'll be the same for F3.

are these impressions coming from someone who neither played much of oblivion, nor has a very strong tie to the fallout series prior to this? those are the opinions that seem the most relevant to my situation, and i'm curious to see how things are panning out for folks coming to the experience with a fresh palate to taste quite clearly.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Spinnington never played Oblivion, but I'm not sure about the Fallout games. So, his impressions may be what you are looking for.

I think generally every person that played the Fallout series and Oblivion prior are mainly the haters that keep posting in the thread. But, they probably wont ever try the game because they have already made up their minds.

I understand having tons of respect for the old games, but I don't see anything wrong with trying something new. As far as I understand, it would either be this, or no Fallout 3 at all. It's not tied to the other games story wise, so people shouldn't really take much offense to it. Just ignore the game if you don't like it.

I'm attempting to play through the original Fallout right now, and I'm having a hell of a time "controlling" the game. I suppose I've been spoiled so I'm not used to this "block-by-block clicking" thing. I can't count how many times I click a wall or an odd spot that wont register, so I have to click around that spot 10 times before my guy will move.

With what I have played, I'm even more excited to see Fallout 3. A lot of the atmosphere and comedy seems spot on. So I'm very interested to see how it all turns out.

i tried to play fallout 2, and it's pretty antiquated by my standards, too. i think we're coming at this from a similar angle, so i'll be interested to keep up with your impressions.

i had to try it 3 times before I finally forced myself to finish.

Good decision.

If I can get through Fallout 1, I'll definitely be trying that next. I really like the game, the controls are just really aggravating most of the time.

Really is. Like I say, I'm not one for visual comparisons, but there's a big difference. The 360 game seems to have more detail, it's definitely sharper and feels slightly smoother, too.

Half the time I have to have the differences in side-by-side comparison vids pointed out to me, but I actually said "Jesus" out loud when I emerged into the wastes on 360 after playing the PS3 version.

As an aside, I'm finding the game to be a bit of a slog. There's more walking than in the LOTR trilogy. Extended editions.

I've played quite a bit of Oblivion but to be honest it never really did it for me. The only part of Oblivion I truly liked was the exploration, which is possibly why I don't mind the shift to FP for FO3. I've also played through FO1 and 2 multiple times and FO2 stands as one of my favourite games of all time. IMO FO3 is definitely on par with my memories of FO2 and I think due to the fact I replayed FO2 less than a year ago rose tinted glasses aren't clouding my judgement as much as the people who haven't played it for years.

Don't feel bad I couldn't even make it throw Morrowind after having played Oblivion/Shivering Isles, I could see what made it so great, but I really just got bored after spending around ten hours with it.

I think when people post their impressions it should have a disclaimer...

Fallout 1/2: Haven't played / Loved / Liked / Meh / Hated
Oblivion: Haven't played / Loved / Liked / Meh / Hated

Btw... I'm looking for impressions from someone that loved F1/F2 and hated / meh towards Oblivion. :D

Go back through the thread and read my impressions then. FO2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and the only part of Oblivion I liked was the exploration.

Kind of understandable, a mutant cow would have been bad enough in the first place but naming it after the highest caste pushes it really far.

Has it been confirmed that the PS3 version will have trophies? I dont care myself since im getting the PC version, but my friend wants to know.

The only reason I didn't fancy Oblivion was the level scaling. Since that's not at play here, I'm not worried about that as an issue. The graphics / engine were fine. More than fine, except for Bethesda's inability to make attractive models (easily corrected by fan content, which isn't possible for an X-Box game, but I guess we'll see how it goes).

Sorry if this has been hashed over a million times, but is there any word out there that characterizes the likelihood of user-created mods or an SDK released for the PC version of the game?

Trying to decide to buy it for PC (on that hope) or 360.

It's not.

I find in FO3 that the models are fine, but they still haven't got a hold of realistic animations. In 3rd person mode your model looks like its ice skating. It doesn't bother me, but I know some people can't deal with stuff like that.

Its actually been confirmed it will not have trophies.

But they said they might patch it in at a later date? But don't think for a minute they will be retroactive, unless they lock the save file. But even Burnout couldn't do it.

If anything, the early reports that the PS3 version looks noticeably worse than the other versions should be the deciding factor- not trophies or some such nonsense.

Hm not sure if this was a glitch but...

Circuit City is giving out a $10 gift card when you preorder the game online. I just preordered the PC version. But I got $10 instant savings instead of the gift card so I'm only paying $42.49 in the end (yeah I did cheap shipping but I can wait). Email confirmation says so as well.

edit: or I might get charged for the gift card come release date...

No editor at launch.

Editor may appear down the road, no date specified. I wouldn't hold your breath.

you will get charged later.

The same thing was going on with the LBP release which included a $15 gift card.

Later on most people reported they were getting charged for a $15 gift card. Still not a bad deal because if you buy all the current releases you can save up for a free game...

,... pending Circuit City doesn't go out of business first.
