The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Damn it....I'm so tempted to change my preorder to the Collector's Edition now. That lunchbox is so awesome :lol

Unfortunately, if you are referring to the lunchbox in the picture I posted, I'm pretty sure they've changed the design and it may not even be a lunchbox now. But instead just a tin with a hinge on it featuring completely different artwork.

Compare the one in my post, to this:

Well looking at this video makes me think the one in your stock picture is the one that we'll get.

Since I haven't seen any Fallout 3 gameplay videos in awhile (don't want anything spoiled/ruined), I have a question.

There's an "Aim Down Sight" mode for all of the guns....right?

Okay I didnt read through the whole thread but wtf? Is this for real?

In the main menu theres a "Downloads" option which is currently greyed out. I mentioned it was odd because the game ends when you beat it, so its unlikely to be extra missions after end game like Shivering Isles.

Theres plain aim and then theres LT which is extra aim, but its not like CoD or BiA, its a very slightly zoomed in view and really either way its useless because real time gunplay is more or less broken.

Wait what? So the gunplay sucks? I really don't want to rely on VATS...

How is it broken?

Well, I surely hope so. The guys video seems to have a slip cover over the lunchbox, where Vyse's looks like the slipcover design IS the lunchbox.

EDIT: Nevermind, it looks like the slip cover can be seen in his pics. That closeup of his box is deceiving!

The game is NOT a shooter... I know a lot of people are going to have certain expectations from a game that puts a gun in your hand and your perspective in first person, but real time action is still stat based; it's based on character skill, not player skill.

You still have an accuracy effect, so even if something is in your targets you might miss wildly, the damage is tiny compared to VATS, enemies such as Raiders often run right up to you making it literally impossible to hit them as they slide around smacking you, clipping issues, it goes on. Really the only time to use real time combat is when you run out of action points in VATS mode and you want to finish people off. Why waste 6 precious bullets on a radroach when 1 in VATS is enough for an instant kill?

I have to say I absolutely hated Oblivion, but I'm quite interested in Fallout. One thing I like alot is the atmosphere, and I liked the addition of gun combat...it scares me though that you painey said the shooting is gimped. So is the shooting so borked that it's not fun?

The problem is that they made it 3D and gave it a first-person perspective. The poor enemy animation and complete lack of any tangible feel to the gunplay is very apparent even in videos. That shit won't fly these days. Fallout 3's real-time combat will be compared to modern shooters by virtue of the game's overall design, and it will fall short. Eurogamer said it well:

Eurogamer said:
It's a clever system with well-implemented controls, even if its adolescent focus on creative brutality doesn't quite sit right with the game's overall tone. The problem with VATS, however, is the fact you will be compelled to use it all the time, because the real-time combat is so terrible. As Kieron noted, what worked okay in Oblivion's melee combat is not necessarily going to wash when you have a gun in your hand, and the lack of precision, sense of connection or tactile feedback is startling.

This is looking to be my last gaming purchase of the year, and I feel it'll keep me going through Christmas. The impressions people are getting seem to coin it as Oblivion with better graphics and guns.... Frankly, I've been waiting for that since I finished Oblivion. The post-apocalyptic environments seem to suit the gameplay well.

I'm disappointed that Bethsidia switched out the awesome lunchbox for a tin box, but you can't always get what you want. The CE is still a great deal.

Well, if it is as bad as Painey and Eurogamer say, let's hope that some user mods can correct this issue.

Still, after watching some of the gameplay vids posted on Gametrailers, I still think it looks pretty damn awesome. The VATS system is quick and seems to mix in with the real time action pretty well. The combination of the two definitely lend a unique cinematic style to the game as well.

Yeah I finally gave in and just watched a couple of gameplay vids on Youtube, and I must say the combat does look good even after the negative comments here. I think I'll come to enjoy VATS more than I think.

Thanks for the answers guys.

Damn PS3 screwed again by bullshit programming. Fuck you Bethseda. Wanted to get the limited edition. How the fuck do you go backwards on PS3 after the love that was Oblivion? Can a dev come in here and answer this please?

The impressions that Fallout 3 really is Oblivion with guns in a post apocalyptic setting are sad to me... I didn't like Oblivion but was hyped for this game. I think I might end up getting Far Cry 2 instead.

Hmm, real-time shooting worries me even more now with painey's impressions. I always thought it looked kinda sped up in the videos but maybe it is really that heptic.

I think Carmack's prediction three years ago, that the PS3 hardware is simply much more difficult to work with, is the primary culprit in so many half-assed ports.
Hw(any hw) also tends to be much more difficult to work with when you have much fewer people working on it, which is the case for vast majority of multiplatform releases.

Hmmm, I was planning on playing this like a shooter.

But if the shooter mechanics are broken...

Looks like I'm waiting for more gameplay videos and video reviews.

I'm surprised so many people wanted to play this like a shooter. I don't mean to rag on the game but from the moment I saw the shooting it looked clunky and dull. VATS always looked more engaging.

Well I just put in almost 5hrs so far, and I'm absolutely loving the game. Graphically the game can look pretty damn impressive at times. Right now, I'm focusing on light arms and stealth and I'm not having too much trouble in combat. I use VATS the majority of the time and watching limbs and heads get blown off does not get old. But yeah, so far I'm impressed.

I would also agree that those going in trying to play this without VATS are not going to have fun. The game does not work as a full blown shooter.

Side note-The super duper mart place is awesome :lol
I sneaked around the far side of the store and got into the back room where there is a worker robot in storage, I hacked the terminal and he lasered pretty much all of the raiders in the store for me. All that was left were piles of ashes everywhere lol.

The Nuclear Oblivion impressions are disappointing... probably going to order on Steam still but I was hoping for something that skewed much more towards the original series.

So how's the power glove in the game?

What the hell... I sat down to play for a bit, and three hours flew by.

So much for finishing Fable 2, LBP and Dead Space. :lol

I'm in the same boat...This game really sucks you in. I had to force myself to take a break:lol

Why do I feel like I'm reading the Mass Effect thread from last year all over again?

No, the game doesn't work as a straight-up shooter, there is also no Conquest mode or online stat tracking for headshots or kill/death ratio. It's a full-blown, hardcore RPG. Jesus Christ.

You need to chill. People new to fallout (like myself) just didn't know how the game is played. Hell, based off of the screens it looks like a shooter...so it's not a bad assumption to think it's one at first. Jesus Christ.

Damnit, now I am confused. The video has the original box, the guy above a downgrade. So it is a US vs. Europe thing? If so, US packaging fails.

What do you mean? How was the 360 CE downgraded?

See this post above. I am not paying $120 (shipping to my country included) for that tin box.

EDIT: To clarify the 'downgrade' --

The original is a unique lunchbox design, the latter is an ordinary tin can. HOWEVER, this video shows the original design, which leads me to believe that the US packaging is different from Europe's. I would like this cleared as well.

If you're talking about Vyse's pictures, I'm pretty sure the closeup of the box has the slipcover on it. If you look in the other picture he posted, you can see the slip cover is off, but his lunchbox is open so It's hard to tell.

So, I'm pretty sure his is exactly like the one in the video.

Edit: Here's the pic. The slip cover is in the top left.

The pics he took are a bit misleading. :lol Not a good shot of the outside of the lunchbox. Maybe Vyse will come back and confirm that the lunchbox is indeed the one from the promotional photos.

I don't know dude, I can see the hinge in his pic pretty clearly. Wouldn't the slipcover hide the hinge?

Vyse -- get in here and clear this up please.

EDIT: WHEW! Thanks purg3

There you have it. We still get the awesome luncbox.

In Vyse's closeup, that slip looks like sooo much like it's the tin itself.

Exactly! Pissed me off (this apparent downgrade so soon after the Fable II one). Glad to see it's not the case :D
