Chiggs, is it possible to move the camera up into typical Fallout top-down style? From that pic, it appears you can since it's set back pretty far. Would be pretty cool to see a battle from that view, but I don't know how you'd control it.

It's the lack of shadowing. Gives everything a very flat look. I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue with the PC version, but it apparently still is.

It doesn't look too bad in motion, though, judging from the videos.

I love Steam, even just bought FarCry 2 on there but there is really no reason it's better than a retail copy of the game. No box, no manual, no preorder bonuses, and you have to spend hours downloading the thing. For what? So you don't have to drive to the store? It's not like most games even require you put a disc in your drive anymore.

I see quite a bit of benefit of Steam over retail box:

No key - I lose the retail keys. All the time in fact. Especially when it's on the little paper sleeve. Ugh.

No box clutter - I recently cleaned out my basement in preparation for a move. I had two GIANT sized boxes filled to the brim with old game boxes, instruction manuals, cases, CDs, etc.

No stop shopping - Sure, a drive to the store is not too hard, but honestly, I like buying my games via digital distribution. No hunting for older games in gamestop's scantily stocked PC gaming section, no closing time, nothing.

And the biggest point:

No CD in the drive - I don't know what games you've played recently that don't have to have the disc in the drive, but all of the latest PC games I've picked up need it in there. It is a pain in the ass and goes back to point 1 and 2, clutter and finding the damn disc. I have a little CD organizer I use but it's still a PITA to hunt down the disc.

So yeah, it's personal preference, but I see quite a bit of value in the Steam model.
 
ghaaa, PC looks so good, I'm beginning to regret my 360 purchase. My 2x8800gt's should handle this easily. How's the live intergration thing work with achievements? Are there two seperate sets of achievements, like Gears of War PC and such, or is it the same achievement list?

Agreed. Thankfully, the world is very intriguing and there's tons of things to explore. It's not big and boring like Far...you know what, let's just end it there. :lol

Why do you buy games on 360 if you have 2x8800GT?

You enter your Gamertag's e-mail and it'll give your Achievements to that account.

There's actually a whole entire little town down there, not the Megaton city you heard about in all the previews with the bomb in the middle (though that's there to) but a a ruined town with no citizens just broken down homes and abandoned wastes. You can rummage around all the little broken houses and dig through their refrigerators and cabinets if they're accessible - most of the food you find is irradiated but it'll do in a pinch or you could sell it for a cap or two. There are Enclave spy bots patrolling the streets though.

The game is stuffed to the brim with things like this, the landscape is nothing like Oblivion (which was all fields and forests with the occasional castle town) it's very densly packed with garbage and waste to scavenge through and collect.

I think most people probably go straight to Megaton after escaping the vault. I'm gonna make sure I go any direction but that one, at least off the bat, though apparently I'll get my ass handed to me if I venture downtown.

Work is going slow.

Oh my God, it's so good. Thank you Bethesda. Thank you for not disappointing me.

This is better than I could have ever hoped for a Oblivion-style Fallout game. I always saw the simlilarities, but hated the bland setting of oblivion, and they've done a very admirable job so far. Don't listen to any haters, bethesda, you did a great job.

I've been waiting 10 years for this game and I am not disappointed.

Fuck the PS3 whiners. You should be used to getting slightly inferior versions by now. It's not really going to matter anyway. Go play this AAA game.

I just started to read Giantbomb.com review of the game and I don't like at all what I'm reading about the combat.

But it regenerates quickly enough to be used pretty regularly, and when you're in close, you'll often just get a 95 percent chance to hit an enemy's head with all of your shots, which can decimate most regular foes quickly. Once I got the hang of this, my combat tactics turned from FPS-style strafing to just running up into the faces of my enemies, triggering VATS, and blowing their heads off with a combat shotgun or a Chinese assault rifle (which is way better than the regular assault rifle). This turned combat into more of a chore than any sort of exciting gameplay element, but the alternative of facing your enemies head-on, in real time, wasn't any better.

That is what I will go for a gunner who is gonna shoot the head of everybody with VATS and talk his ass out of situations while influencing others :D

Lockpicking is more useful than science. There are many, many more safes and doors to unlock than there are terminals to hack. You'll want to do both, though.

Perception 3 will keep you from getting some of the good ranged combat perks. I'd advise Per of at least 6. Higher Int and lower Cha would work better, for more skill points. You can still pump up speech with a low charisma. The derived bonuses to skills from attribute scores isn't as important as the other benefits of your SPECIAL: unlocking perks, more skill points, etc.

Keys: Like I said, I JUST purchased FarCry 2 this past weekend on Steam. The game does definitely require a key to play, Steam gives you a little pop-up with the code and you have to either write it down or copy and paste it into the game.

Boxes: I like game boxes, especially the actual plastic DVD cases, they're rather collectible.

Shopping: There is definitely a place for Steam in selling older hard-to-find games but otherwise new games can be found on any shelf of Gamestop or Best Buy. I'm out of the house all the time anyways due to work, college classes, etc... so stopping by the store is ALOT more convenient than downloading a 3.5GB file. Plus, for me personally, there is a Gamestop that is literally 1 mile away from my house and another within 3 and yet another two within 5.

No CD: Honestly, and it's probably not what you would consider a good argument, almost every PC game gets a no-cd crack immediately which I use. That, combined with the use of Steam (which I use to) I sincerely can not remember the last time I had to put a disc in my drive to play a game (Fallout 3 I guess but I never took the thing out after installing it :D)

I'd roll with something closer to this, and make sure to bring your luck up to 6 with Intense Training. A useful perk requires luck of 6 or higher.
 
BTW, Bethesda spews bullshit at an almost offensive rate. They were paying extra attention to the third person camera this time? Lawlll
 
Oh, I should mention the huge turnout the Gamestop I went to had at midnight. Close to fifty people, two of which were huge Resident Evil fans that were sporting Umbrella tattoos on their shoulders. They were complete dorks, but in a somewhat lovable way...well, until one started talking about how much he loved The Clone Wars and began discussing various "what if" Jedi vs Jedi scenarios. Then he became immensely unlikable.

About quarter 'till twelve, these two metrosexual hipsters walked in and stood at the back of the store making comments about how stupid and lame everyone was for being there. That's when this really fat and garlicky D&D guy turned around and said:

"Hey, guys, I know you think you're really cool, but it appears that you're here for the same midnight launch we are, so maybe you're just as lame?"

That got a big laugh from everyone, and the manager of the store gave him a Pip-Boy sticker for his efforts.

TL; DR: Midnight launches are fairly cringe-worthy, and this one was no exception, but it wasn't nearly as bad as your typical Halo/Madden frat boy affair.

Well I would assume that depends on your stats. If you have the skill to use good shotguns and rifles, have enough agility to shotgun something in the head repeatedly, and then have the patience to wait for your AP to regenerate (which is fast but you won't get anywhere just spaming the VATS key), as well as the health it would require to get hit multiple times in case your shots don't kill the enemy than combat isn't really that difficult.

I don't see how that's much different than simply one-shot sniping four guys in any first person shooter though. The easy monsters are easy, I'd be glad I didn't have to strategize for every damn radroach I ran into. Not to mention you can just shoot in real time, if a monster is easy enough to one shot in VATS why even open the VATS menu? Just aim and fire a round off into their face manually.

If you're going to basically ignore melee, is it viable to only put a couple of points into Strength? I'm wondering what sort of impact Strength has this time around. Quite a lot seems to play out differently than the first two Fallouts. Does str even affect your hit points anymore?
