The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

If you're going to basically ignore melee, is it viable to only put a couple of points into Strength? I'm wondering what sort of impact Strength has this time around. Quite a lot seems to play out differently than the first two Fallouts. Does str even affect your hit points anymore?

Strength determines the amount of loot you can carry, so you don't want to drop it too far.

Endurance determines HP.

You really, really want a decent Str score so that you can loot junk, carry weapons, wear armor, etc. Otherwise you're going to get very frustrated with inventory management.

I'd roll with something closer to this, and make sure to bring your luck up to 6 with Intense Training. A useful perk requires luck of 6 or higher.

Okay, I'll edit before I get out of the vault.

edit: Which I just did, fuck wow.

I was thinking of using these:
St - 5
Pe - 6
En - 5
Ch - 4
In - 7
Ag - 8
Lu - 5

I want to play w/ small guns, sneak, and one of explosives, science, repair or lockpick. Any thoughts? I thought I was going to use repair, but I'm not sure how useful that will be late in the game.

If someone in the US gifts a game to someone in EU, can they download it then, or would they need to wait till the game is out in the US? Talking about Steam obviously.

for those with the ps3 version....whenever someone signs in or out, pretty much whenever the message pops up, my game pauses for like 10 seconds...any1 got this error?

I was thinking something like maybe 3 or 4 points. Too low? If fast travel works the way I'm imagining it does, I was planning on traveling to towns and such and selling things off quite often (provided I can actually get back to where I originally was) to keep my inventory relatively low.

Man I can't wait for this. Unfortunately I leave for vacation in a couple hours so I'll have to wait until I get back. I'm planning to play as a loner stealth sniper. I am going to avoid having any kind of home base/house to dump stuff off, and am going to try to play light. Carrying as little as possible, and always moving from place to place without making loot runs.

Survive only through what I can find in the wasteland. And because the low strength I expect there will be a lot of decisions to make on what is worth taking and what I will leave by the side of the road.

S: 2
P: 6
E: 3
C: 6
I: 9
A: 9
L: 5

Going to focus on Small Guns, Repair, Lockpicking, Stealth, and Science. And getting all sniper/stealth/crit related perks, as well as perks like scrounger for collecting what I need without buying it from town.

Just turn the messes off when you play the game.

ugh...last second considerations: 360 or PC? I can't tell if this will be a good 360 experience (eg: Bioshock) or something definitively tied to the PC (as Oblivion seemed to be, for me.)

*waits for PC impressions*

everyone has this error on PS3 yes. bethesda are aware of it.

for anyone WHINING about how the PS3 version has a few extra glitches...

would you rather wait a year again?

It is, but it's also pretty repetitive

e: and talking about geometry here. Textures are pretty poor.

I'm not sure why you would choose the 360 version over the PC one, unless your machine isn't up to the job.

If you have a decent machine, the pc version is the way to go. Simple as that, really.

There were about 12 or so people at the midnight launch I went to. Mostly pretty nerdy types, but there was one dude there who looked very business casual. And one dude that brought a very upset and tired looking girlfriend along.. lol.

I let mine sleep at home and then when I got back curled back up with her and started playing this morning.

IT'S SO GOOD

The geometry is definitely insane, but there are some technical oddities that keep it from being one of the truly best-looking games out there, IMO. Having said that, I'll reserve final judgement on the graphics until I play it for myself tonight.

Easy to sit on the couch and the wifey come along. I used to be a huge pc gamer, but once I got married have pretty much given up on it. 108inch projector and the wife would rather sit next to me or sleep in my lap.

I've been pretty much using VATS exclusively. The real time aiming is a little too fast for me, and I can't seem to hit anything...and you can never actually tell when you hit anything if not for the health meter.

PC + projector + pad.

Dopeness. Exactly what my wife does every night when I'm playing.

Yeah, I don't necessarily mean from a technical standpoint, just the artistic choices, the deco, the crumbling landmarks, etc.

They do have the look down, in most cases. A video had Todd Howard moving the camera in Fallout 3 up into a sort of top-down view, and it then looked pretty much as I would have expected a modern-day isometric Fallout to look like.

Question: Is the PS3 version worth picking up? ...I'm quite tired of purchasing 3rd party titles to play on my roommate's 360. So.. besides the obviously known issues, are there any other?

Will walk out of my local electronic retail store knowing I made a great purchase? ..or suffer severe buyer's remorse?

...And to answer a question I saw, yes, I'd prefer they deliver a finished, less slightly glitchy product (And no, I'm not talking about FO3, just most games in general) as oppose to "patchin' it!" some time after release. But hell, I should get use to it.. Eh.

For those worried about the 360 version, I can tell you that it looks and plays great on the 360. I haven't noticed any serious pop in or framerate issues, and the game is gorgeous.

I see the appeal but you can plug PCs up to TVs and projectors as well.

Personally, my laptop is pretty cheap but my buddy owns a descent gaming laptop and when I go over his house we plug it up to the projector. I bring over my Wireless Xbox controller receiver and we're good to go. Even with my $550 laptop though I'm able to play FarCry 2 at medium settings on my TV with my xbox controller. That's of course considering your PC is even hard to move or you don't have an extra that's at least strong enough to run the game at 720p with medium settings.

It seems to suffer from notable glitches and technical issues in comparison to the 360 version. This doesn't seem like a complete deal breaker (other that the Friends issue) but it's hard to give it recommendation over a version that works at the same price (less for PC).

However, if you buy the PS3 version, you'll be sending an okay for developers to continue the "ship bad PS3 version and patch later" mentality.

There some new vids of the PS3 version on IGN.

I have a friend who's been playing the game on the PS3 since yesterday and is loving every second of it.
Granted the 'message pause' glitch is a significant thing that needs to be patched (turn off the PSN I guess), but unless you are sitting around comparing versions like some kind of OCD asshole you should have a fantastic time with the game.

Obviously if you have a good enough PC or 360 that's convenient for you, those versions are proven better, but if you are just PS3-only, it shouldn't be enough for a 'no sale' reaction.

I have a problem with conversations...you can't cancel out of them with b. you have to navigate to "I'm done." So lame!

Went to GS this morning on my waybto work and they had extra 360 CEs so I cancelled my preorder of the regular edition and picked the CE up. Starting tonight after the Sharks game.

Thanks, I'll check out those vids. And uhh, yeah. I want to big my PS3 library, but it's really hard. I want the best bang for my buck. But I'm tired of losing out on great experiences and settling for average, slightly mediocre. Thanks again.

Question for those playing (some early game spoilers, pre-vault exodus)

I killed the overseer and most of the security guards during the vault escape.... was there a way to escape and not do all that killing?
I escaped and only had to kill the one guard by the overseer. I think you can even not kill that one guard if you can sneak around well enough you just need the key to the office to get out.

Repair is very useful from start to finish. It'll make you money, and increase your damage. You'll want to pick locks as well. I didn't personally find explosives to be worth putting a huge amount of points into.
