The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I'm really digging the game, but I'm not digging the LOOOOONG underground subway stations you seem to have to traverse through between pretty much all of the main quest... quests.

1) They're uninteresting visually - dark and same-y. The overworld, while (obviously) very grey and bleak, has a lot of interesting landmarks and diversions, when traveling long distances. Underground... not so much.

2) They're confusing & maze-like. You have a 2D map for a 3D space - I searched all over for the exit once, only to finally figure out that it was below me.

3) They're just too long. I don't have a problem with ducking into subway tunnels now and then - in fact it's kind of a cool/creepy change of pace. But the sections I've been shunted into so far just seem to last about 2-3 rooms too long.

I understand why Bethesda put them in (I think). It allows them to build in more scripted encounters while the player is on their way from Point A to Point B. They can set up a Ghoul encounter, a little raider base, some ghouls fighting some raiders, etc. If the player did all his traveling in the free-flowing, go-anywhere overworld, that wouldn't be possible. On the way to their objective, the player would just encounter some wild dogs or mole rats (or whatever). So I can dig the design decision. I'm just not feeling the ultimate outcome.

After the last story mission I just completed, I think I'm gonna head back and clean up some sidequests... I don't wanna see another subway for a while.

I can understand that. Considering how obscure the Geforce 8800s are.
This is fucking inexcusable!

It's really annoying. I'm enjoying the game and would like to actually stay in it and play. Crashes to the desktop are annoying enough - the fact that I have to reboot everytime that happens just to get the game up and running again makes it very frustrating.

And it comes out of nowhere, too, not after FPS hitching or something like that. 60 FPS, incredibly smooth, and all of a sudden the shit hangs for a second then dumps out to the desktop where I have to end the process.

I've only played a couple hours in but I'm disappointed to hear that there will be a lot more tunnel traversing. I didn't like that at all.

I honestly don't think this game is that great, but like Oblivion, I just can't stop playing it. I am having a ton of fun with VATS though, especially with the grenades :D

Same on my Q9550/HD4870x2/8GB DDR2/Vista 64 SP1.

BTW, I tried doing what Evilore did last night before I left for work this morning and it didn't work out at all. Not sure why it was so easy for him. I shot the sheriff (but not the deputy, badumdum), took his AR, shot some more people, and was getting swamped and flanked left and right and running out of AP for VATS constantly. So I was force to run around, spam stimpaks, and shoot people in real-time a lot.

I killed quite a lot of people, but I was killed before I was even close to killing the entire town of Megaton.

Why was it so easy for you, Evilore? Playing on normal here, btw.

Not saying the social mechanics aren't broken, but I just didn't find it that easy to exploit the start game.

There are only a few explanations here. He was exaggerating, he is playing on easy, he is using some kind of cheat, his combination of stats and skills makes the game easy, he has amazing luck or he is just a really good player and used some very smart tactics.

It is totally possible to kill the whole town, just like the old Fallouts, right from the beginning of the game, but for most people it will not be easy at all. I also tried messing around when I first got to Megaton and ended up having a rough time just going in guns blazing or even trying to strategically pick off people one at a time. I am playing on Normal difficulty and while possible, it definitely would have been very difficult and time consuming if I chose to slaughter the whole town. I ended up reloading my game and just played as a decent character.

I've been playing the PC version for about 8 hours and I really like it. I am just finishing the Megaton quests and preparing to continue the search for my Dad. I really think these guys nailed the Fallout feel. I am having a blast just exploring the Megaton area and finding destroyed towns and buildings and looting them. I found an old police station which now is inhabited by super mutants that I am in the process of clearing out. The combat can get really fun when you start messing with explosives and placing landmines in doorways before letting the enemies know you are there. They come charging towards you and get slaughtered. I just picked up the Bloody Mess perk as well and it makes for some very gorey killshots. It is nice that Bloody Mess gives an actual bonus in this game too (+5% Weapon Damage) instead of just being a visual thing.

So far I am very impressed. I was in the middle of Saints Row 2 and Fable II, but with Fallout here I don't even feel like going back to those games. It is definitely a contender for Game of the Year in my book.

The game froze on me a few times too (PC, 8600GTS)
Just out of nowhere, it sucks because restarting takes up time.

BTW. I am impressed with the visuals on my old 8600GTS, looks and runs better than Oblivion did on my rig.

Damn, the game just froze on me on the first time (X360). Happened during a battle with 3 Super Mutants.

That sucks, hope you didn't lose too much progress. I've started saving every five minutes or so because of how many times I've died already.

Haha, damn, I was just crossing the country out near the drive-in theater and one of those Mole Rats or whatever came running at me. I fired a single shot from my pistol into his brain using VATS. Just as I was coming out of the slo-mo VATS kill, I see this hulking form looming over me, bringing down a massive telephone-pole-sized club at me. My first Super Mutant!! Nearly pissed myself!

Switched to my AK and blew his face off. I look around and see another one coming, this a Super Mutant Brute or some such, wielding a fucking huge minigun. VATS tells me my best percentage is the gun itself, so I fire away and watch the minigun fly from his hands lol. A couple of shots later and he's dead.

Man, this game rocks.

Wow, I gotta say, I'm impressed with how well this game runs.

Hardware:

E6600 @ 3.0GHz
8800GT @ 670/970
3GB usable RAM
Windows Vista SP1

Settings:

1680*1050
2x AA
8x AF
Vsync
Every slider maxed

Not a hitch below 60fps. I have to thank dark10x for his stuttering fix. When I went fullscreen, the game was certainly skipping around as I was walking, kind of like I kept getting stuck in gum every footstep I would take. The fix worked perfectly.

My only problem with the visuals is that anything in the distance is horrible dithered. Also, if you look at plants and foliage close up, you can notice dithering on it's edges. Anyone find a way to fix this?

I finally made it to the first town. The game hasnt crashed on me ever since the initial 2 crashes. I am playing in a combination of Ultra and High. Looks fantastic.

Yesterday I encountered a super mutant with a rocket launcher. I tried shooting him down from afar, but the splash damage from his rockets nearly killed me multiple times. I ran out of stimpacks and was running low on ammo so I just said fuck it and charged him hoping that the splash damage from his rocket would at least kill him along with me. Instead of shooting me at close range with his rocket launcher he seemed confused and started to spin around looking for me. I circled him while whacking him with a sledgehammer. He gave up with the rocket launcher and started to try and punch me to death so I pulled out my shotgun and used my last three rounds in V.A.T.S. on his arm and both legs. The last shot was a critical and his leg was blown off in a spray of blood and guts. I looted the super mutants and carefull made my way back to Megaton (this was before I knew about quick-travel) where I sold off a bunch of stuff, healed and restocked on ammunition.

So just starting out in the Wasteland, where should I go to get some good exp? I went to a city (D.C.?) and killed some raiders who gave good exp, but I killed like four of them and then they wouldn't come anymore.

Also, I wanted to point out that GWL fucking PWNS!

I have never felt more at home. If only I could run all my games on my uber rig instead of my lousy 360. The 360 is an awesome console due to its great games, but if more and more games will allow me to be connected to Live on my PC, I will stop using my 360 soon. Also, wasn't this game going to include the GFWL client? What happened? I hope it didn't get scrapped. I want to be connected always, not only when I play a game. Please MS bring the NXE to PC.

I never played oblivion. This game is epic. I am having fun and have not even played that much. I really like how open it is.

if you like this.. you'll like oblivion

Not necessarily true. A lot of people who strongly disliked Oblivion are having a blast with Fallout 3. I didn't think much of Oblivion (it is fun to mess around in with mods), but I think this game is awesome.

I'm not :(

After being able to run Dead Space on my 8600GT at 1080p (mostly) with all the bells and whistles on, Fallout 3 really disappoints. I can't even enable v-sync or the game becomes a choppy mess.

hmm.. wierd .. unless you just are like my brother and don't like the midevil scene... cause the controls and gameplay are almost exactly the same.

Yup just had my second BSOD today because of the game and have an 8800 here. The game is perfectly playable but i don't think i want to spend any more time on it today.

Is anyone able to get GFWL working? Keeps saying my CD key is incorrect and I've quadruple checked it. I got the game off Steam.

No problems at all on this end. I guess it's Nvidia's turn after we had to deal with the ATi Far Cry 2 epidemic. :lol

Bu bu bu bu...I dont play far cry :lol
Lul pc gaming aside, a few patches are in order. And common i can deal with a game crashing, but its been a long since it actually brought me to BSOD.

Edit: Anyone speculating if its the card or just the beta drivers?

The controls are mostly the same, but the gameplay is different. This game is all about guns, explosives and the V.A.T.S. system. The only time the combat even feels remotely like Oblivion is when you are using melee weapons. The skills, the way leveling works, statistics, etc... all are different than Oblivion. Most importantly, the setting and story are completely different from Oblivion and this is the biggest thing. Most people, even those who normally like Medieval / Fantasy settings (myself included) didn't really enjoy Oblivion's world because it was far too generic and bland.

I can tell the game is running on the same engine as Oblivion and that there are many similarities, but it is a totally different game. This isn't just well-done mod. It is a different game and it is very good unlike Oblivion (just my opinion). They got rid of many of the things that most people hated about Oblivion and added in a lot of very interesting elements.

Fuck aman how do you get to that center in the one city on the far down right corner of the map? I've been walking around the city fighting mutants and ghouls and shit, I'm out of stimpacks, got a fucking radiation virus or whatever, I'm just eating parrots on a stick and dogmeat or whatever I can find right now...

Sooo hard but it's really like I'm fighting for my damn life over here :p.

I love it! Can't wait to play this on 360. Here are some shots from my pc for dark ;)

Specs :

Pentium 1.5 GHZ
1GB ram
6600GT

Animations in 3rd person are terrible and the graphics are not very impressive. The character models are average to say the least. I expected alot more to be honest. It runs great though. I just got out of the vault so hopefully it gets better.

Dead Space set a performance bar that I don't expect many more games to match.

My 4870X2 is also dropping to desktop and the real disturbing thing is that it will automatically reboot my computer. WTF.

Mine did it at the beggining only Che. After a while, all the problems were gone and I was able to play uninterrupted for a couple hours. Hopefully I don't get any more problems. I don't think it is the card. I just think the code is buggy and your machine needs to be uber stable for it to not happen again. I am running the game without any OC at this point and things are going smoothly.

Just got outside and i got an "Fallout has stopped working" error. Crashed to windows vista.

Faulting module seems to be module CinemasterAudio.DLL, version 4.1.2.20 as described in the event log. Oblivion i had this same problem until i installed the k-lite pack. That same pack obviously isnt working here. Wtf is with bethesda and their audio codec problems.

I anticipate consistent random crashes until i can figure out how to fix this.

I have a question regarding a side-quest, if anyone could help me out.. I'd be very grateful.
Blood Ties -- I already discovered the dead bodies of the West family, but now I have to find Lucy Wests' younger brother. I constantly search the 3 areas mentioned but the sheriff of Arefu but no luck. Help?

q6600 at 3.2ghz
3.5gb ram (win xp)
hd 4870.

1680x1050 8xAA 16xAF, pretty much no slowdown or choppiness (stutters a tad when i look at the sprawling wasteland after coming outside from time to time, but only once while it loads it all). No crashes.

Looks awesome too :p

This one seems to be giving a lot of people problems. Go into the train station (I forgot the name) and make your way past the room with the ghoul guy who wants sugar bombs. You will find a room with some radiation in it and a sewer mahole. You can enter the tunnels where The Family and the West brother is through that manhole. Just be careful in there because there are a lot of traps and landmines. I was able to be diplomatic to rescue the brother and convince The Family to stop raiding that small town, but I guess you could probably just kill them all, too.

I'm crippled. I can't play through this section of the level without DOGMEAT dying and I refuse to continue on. I keep telling him to stay put but he glitches out and vanishes :lol

DOGMEAT I <3 u

his growl is awesome

That was my exact pairing for my first Super Mutant and SMB. Scared the crap out of me. But now they go down easily at level 8 :)

Thanks abunch, I spent a good 2 hours of traveling between areas (on foot!). Thanks again!
