The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

This game is amazing. I think this is just the game I needed to have my forget about wrath of the lich king. Who else wants mass effect 2 to steal the vats system.

Some random cool stuff I've witnessed so far:

- I encountered a dude sitting in a church tower somewhere in the north east. He had a sniper rifle way better then mine so I killed him (he was hostile to begin with). On his body I found the map to 'Oasis', which turned out be an entire subquest on it's own. Really cool (moral) choices to be made there too.

- I ran into some former Brotherhood soldiers once. I think their armor is more busted up/dark then regular Brotherhood? One had a minigun, the other a mace. They were all like 'shouldn't you bang rocks together, local?' I was kinda eyeballing their equipment but was low on everything (weapons, ammo, stims) and looking for Dogmeat who I lost again so I let them go.

- I ran into a huge raider/slaver camp somewhere with around 20 raiders. Took a lot of time and careful effort to pop'm all. Turns out the crazy motherfuckers had a Super Mutant Behemoth locked up. Right before everyone was killed one of those asses unlocked the gate for the Behemoth (I think). Luckily he got stuck between some railcars (lol) and I could pick him off easily.

- I love how caravans sometimes run into raiders/mutants and finish'm off but leave the loot for me :D

I hear there's a flashlight on the Pip-Boy, yet I've got no clue how to turn the damn thing on. I sense a facepalm.jpg coming on, but could someone point me in the right direction?

I had a random encounter that gave me a map pinpoint to Oasis, too. Only it happened in a totally different way. I just wandered up to two random friendly wastelanders and initiated conversation. Asked them what they were doing, and they said they were looking for Oasis, but didn't want it's location to be known... so they would now have to kill me. So I wasted them, and it added a map pinpoint.

It's neat that the game (apparently, based on our stories) semi-randomly funnels gamers into specific locales. And then from those locales, tips or quests will send you out to other unexplored areas of the world. When I got the Oasis pinpoint it felt organic and natural, but now, after hearing your story, it seems like the devs probably intend everyone to "stumble" onto it's location.

Yeah I cleared out this camp, too. Luckily none of them released the super behemoth. In fact, it took a while, but that camp is where I finally turned the corner and was able to save up 1K caps, buy a huge stockpile of stimpacks, etc. Basically, once the raiders were dead, I looted EVERYTHING in the camp. Everything. Every single weapon and armor the raiders carried, all the trash (mugs, plates, empty bottles, etc.), and then I fast-traveled to various merchants to sell it all out. It took several trips, and I ended up taking all the caps everyone in Megaton had, and most of the caps the merchants in Rivet City had, too.

I was kinda wondering about that too. I suspected so much after reading about how people ran into the Fire Ants subquest. In my case I was hanging around that warf at the river with the old lady when that little boy ran up to me asking for help, then ran back. Seemed really different then how a lot of other people stumbled about. I guess there is a certain radius around locations where you can encounter people/events that carry coordinates to locations somewhat nearby.

Even all the stuff from the underground brothel under the Mills? Damn dude, how much can you carry? I only take weapons, ammo, medicines and stuff worth more then 30-40 caps nowadays, just too lazy to pick up the rest and usually I'm carrying so much firepower I can't really carry that much more :lol.

I love this game. But god do the models suck in this game. All the people look like man babies or something. Really creepy. One of Chiggs' pictures is a good example.

fallout3200810302112261fw3.jpg

I mean for 3 of bethesda big games (morrowind, oblivion, and fallout 3) have had terrible terrible models. When are they going to get the hint that the people they have working in the department suck?

...There's an underground brothel? I must have missed that :( Where's the entrance?

Anyway, my carry weight is 250 - I took the strong back perk, which is a HUGE help, and is probably the biggest thing that allowed me to stop having such serious inventory issues. It ads +50 to your encumbrance cap.

Anyway, here's a little money making, inventory mini-guide:

Barter - Pretty self explanatory. I wouldn't sacrifice a combat skill for barter early on, but it's absolutely worth dumping some points into, once you feel confident in your damage output.

Repair repair repair - I can't emphasize this enough. Leveling my repair still is what allowed me, more that anything else, to finally start making money in Fallout 3. Basically, you can take two (or more) of the same item and combine them into one item that will have a higher quality, and thusly a higher selling price. To repair: you just select the gun/armor you want to keep, hit the repair button, and then it'll ask you what other pieces you want to combine with it.

I used to never bother taking raider armor, since it weight be down so much. Now I can take ~5 pieces of raider armor and combine them all into one high-quality piece that sells for 150 caps or more. That plus all the other general looting leads to a hefty profit.

Don't be afraid to sell unused ammo Since ammo is weightless, I had just been hoarding it all. But I finally realized that I'm not going to level all the weapon skills, this playthrough. I'm going small guns, big guns, and explosives. So... why hoard all that Energy weapon ammo? I still didn't sell all of it, just in case I do wanna play around with them, but selling about half my energy ammo resulted in a healthy amount of caps to be spent on something I'd actually use.

Scrounger Perk - Another self-explanatory one. You find a lot more ammo so that A) You won't have to BUY the ammo for your favorite guns and B) You'll be able to sell more ammo in the types you don't use.

Fortune's Finder Perk Again, self explanatory. You find more caps in "containers." The game sayz containers, but in my experience it's the dead raiders that will now have around ~8 caps on their body. These add up quickly.

Strong Back Perk & Higher STR Carry more phat loots. You don't need to go overboard with this to still be successful. I only started out with 4 in STR, and bumped it to 6 via a bobble head and Intense Training. This 6 STR + Strong Back gave me 250 lbs of carry weight - more than enough to carry several weapons, and still loot most stuff.

~~~
Too long; Didn't read: The "short version" is to put skills in the obvious money-making perks, and to MAKE REPAIR YOUR BEST FRIEND. If you combine together all the shitty weapons and ammo you get via repair, you should be able to clear out whole raider encampments without getting over encumbered. When you sell loot, you'll then be selling guns and ammo worth over 100 caps a piece, instead of 20 (or less).
buttonCOMPRESSED.png
The textures in this game are idiotically bad.
(I downsized the image from 1650x1080 so the .png wasn't like 3mb)
Also, why the fuck isn't Esc the "get out of menu" button? Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to map it to E?
Why are nearly all items in this world super-glued to whatever's beneath them? I smack something with a bat, and it doesn't react at all.
Eh. Was hoping for a little more in terms of decent design choices. Story seems okay so far. Voice acting is as dumb as ever. Not being able to kill certain NPCs is really, really dumb. I'd rather have most quests continue without certain people if they're dead, or at LEAST have them not stand up 10 seconds after I've "killed" them, have them wait maybe 30 minutes or an in-game day or something.
Yeah I ran into those Fallen Brotherhood soldiers before, they had blackened and red armor. Pretty neat.
Where is that huge slaver camp located? I wanna kill another behemoth. Or sneak in and unleash him if possible.
Well, you have the mill with a couple of rooms/raiders. Then there's a door (if I remember correctly) on the left of the door that you came in. There's an underground cave with some sort of bar/brothel/casino in it. They also have a cell with a chick locked up but when I freed here she tried to stab me. Ungrateful, or maybe I accidentally hit here during the earlier firefight. When I was there, there was also a trader with some nice goods. Forgot his name.
It's to the north east of Tenpenny tower if I'm not mistaken (not at home so can't consult the map). It's kinda in a Canyon so if you have a good sniper rifle/perks you can pick up quite some of the 'outpost' guards and sneek in undetected. Could be nice to set the Behemoth loose on the raiders.
Question:
Should i buy Fallout for the PS3 or PC?
I would love to play it on the pc (like the other fallouts =)), but im not sure if it will work smooth. Oblivien works fine on it. Also i heard hath the PS3 Version is a bug festival...
Here my system data:
- 1,8 GHz Intel (*dummdummdumm*) core 2 duo processor
- 3 GB RAM
- NVIDIA Geforce 7800 256mb
Thx for help =)
Oh come on, this is vital, how did they not tell me this.
Also repair is an awesome skill :D
Either of you can tell me where that raider camp is? I want to go to town on them.
**Also if anyone picked up a follower, specifically Jericho, is it worth it?
He seems to shoot and hit often, has a butt-ton of HP, plus has funny combat dialogue. What happens when he dies? How do I heal him?
quick question - I have a 95 Small Gun rating but I also have 3 points in Gun nut. Did overkill the stat? does it matter if its 100+ or does it still cap?
basically i'm just wondering if I wasted a perk and some skill points
I haven't played too much (
About to go to some radio station looking for you-know-who
) but I'm honestly finding this game sort of difficult due to the lack of ammunition and decent weapons. Should I being tossing lots of points in small arms or something to make these guys worth using or what?
Really odd game so far.
Proc said:
Not me, vats still needs to be worked on more because it does have some problems and i don't want bioware spending time on fixing a tacked on game mechanic when theres already so much for them to fix from mass effect 1.
Smalls arms is worth it because you will be using those weapons for a very long time. But the game is pretty hard as it is and you will probably always run out of ammo if you just use one weapon.
I'm on very hard and haven't had much problem with ammo except in the beginning. I always save my explosives for the bigger baddies though. Also helps to have 20 frag mines :lol .
This way I can save my ammunition for everything else. Also if you are low on ammo, don't be afraid to melee even if you aren't a melee character, the damage is still pretty crazy.
*LockPicking at 50 has helped me out a lot as well. In GermanTown, there's a storage place with like 4 assault rifles, 2 combat shotguns and 200 ammo. I was floored :lol
Oh and a Fat Man in another place. Had to kill about 9 super mutants though.
**Does anyone know what the hell the stats do? Small Guns, Energy Weapons?
I'm just guessing that they increased % damage, but I can't remember if my pistol did 4 or 6 damage to begin with. What about reticle accuracy outside of VATS, and % inside VATS?
I've tried looking for an answer, but no.
14 hours in, hit level 10 last night. My god this game is awesome.
Cool random things I've had happen to me:
- Regulators. I'm totally bad on my karma and these guys keep showing up with bounty's on my head. Awesome. I'm assuming it's the negative karma that's causing it. So far I haven't found out who exactly put the bounty on my head, but when I do... . I love that they are all carrying actual bounty notices customized with my name.
- Vault 106. Oh holy SHIT that was a trip. I encourage everyone that hasn't found it already to go there and play through it. I seriously thought something was wrong with my 360 until I figured out what was going on. Don't spoil it for yourself by reading up on it, other than to find the location if necessary. It's awesome.
- I've boosted my Luck and the Perk that raises Luck way up, I'm a crit machine now. I love one-shot killing things with a hunting rifle from 3 miles away.
I"m sure this has been asked alot but what kind of FPS am i look at on my PC.
3.8G Q6600
HD4870 512
1680x1050 resolution
4 gigs 800mhz ram
Vista 64 bit
More worried about outside FPS then inside, considering inside will probably be 60.
Anyone know how to turn on a light? It said hold A but its not working. Cant see shit.
Trying to get out the overseers tunnel.
Just started playing meself. I hope the modders get to work fast, because the interface on the PC version is terrible with its 72 point font. Other than that, it's intriguing as anything. Do I get to see
Amata
again? I actually started over because I
fucking wasted her dad and she was crying and shit when leaving the vault.
Also,
I'm in Megaton, how do I get my explosives up to work on the bomb?
Having lots of fun so far. Did anyone else take time to put together the caps to recruit Jericho? Dude's pretty awesome. :lol In fact, he's a little too awesome. Keeps stealing my kills, dammit! He's fun to have around. Seems to have snarky little comments for every situation.
Got a question about a quest, though. It's probably been asked before, but I haven't been highlighting spoilers at all. It's about Blood Ties.
Where the fack is the Family? I looked all over in all three areas you're supposed to search, but didn't find them. Had an awesome super mutant fight at the outdoor cinema, though.
Look in the subway tunnel that is one of the locations he sends you to. There should be a Ghoul in there willing to make you some drugs for Sugar Bombs. In one of the tunnels near his place is a room full of radioactive waste containers. There's a manhole on the floor that leads to the Family's secret hideout.
Question concerning looking for the real truth behind Rivet City's history:
Surely I don't need my pick a Very Hard lock to finish this mission! How do I get to the other side of the ship?
I think I'm in love with this game. So much depth, great world, great characters and fun combat. It's the only game I've spent a solid 4 consecutive hours playing in a long time.
Ah, I did go up and down the tunnels. Guess I must've somehow missed that, since I didn't come across a ghoul at all. It's sort of annoying how the map has a fog of war. Makes it hard to know where you have and haven't been. Thanks for the advice, I'll have to head back there.
It's insane. Dead Space, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 already and LBP, Gears 2, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead and Banjo coming out in the coming weeks.
GREAT time to be a gamer.
i was too nice to recruit jericho, much as i wanted to.
The first time I met him when I first got to Megaton, I was at neutral so I couldn't recruit him. So I went inside that bar on the bottom level behind that girl's counter and basically laid waste to everyone in there (and managed not to piss off the rest of the town). By the time I finished, I was at "Evil Opportunist" (funny just how true that is considering the reason why I annihilated those people) and Jericho took an interest. I still didn't have nearly enough caps at the time to get him, though. It actually took me quite a while to get the 1000 caps to recruit Jericho, since they're relatively scarce in the game (especially towards the start), and I had to spend chunks of them at times for stimpaks and ammo. It was really worth it, though (except for the occasional shoddy A.I. pathfinding), and the fact that it costs so many caps made it a very meaningful decision.
Anyone know if it's possible to have more than 2 NPCs tag along simultaneously in this game? I'm wondering whether or not I'll have to drop Jericho whenever I stumble on Dogmeat. I'd really rather keep both alongside me.
Just got my copy yesterday. I like it and I knew it was going to basically be Oblivion with a pallete swap of story and textures, but playing it, it just feels kind of cheap. I have mixed feelings on it. I had fun playing it but I'm glad I bought Dead Space and rented Fallout 3 which was the other way around in my original plan. I'm sure I'll buy Fallout 3 later on, once I finish Oblivion maybe. I've barley touched the story portion of that game after all this time. I just can't justify myself getting into Fallout 3 when I have the same game with a different theme that I haven't even really touched yet. Even though I do like Fallout a little better than Oblivion.
Pretty pathetic how you can't even download the EU version until 5pm of the release day.
