Awesome game.

I was having a hard time deciding to save megaton or to blow it up. I wanted to confess to Simms but then i told him i was joking because is wasn't ready. The next time i wanted to rat out Burke Simms didn't believe me any more. :lol

So i went on a stealing streak and murdering everyone who was alone in bed at night by putting a grenade in their pockets. Then my karma was finally low enough to recruit Jericho so we went and slaughtered the hole town before blowing it up at Tenpenny Tower.
I reallt felt like an asshole to kill everyone but also really bad ass. And Jericho seemed to have a good time killing his neighbours. :lol
 
Oh my god, the main quest is unbelievably short. I can't... well, believe it. I wasn't trying to rush through the story, but I assumed it would last longer. More of an observation than a complaint, because I still have a lot to do, but still a big surprise.
 
i really dont want this game to end. how far am i into the main quest if i just entered vault 112? im struggling with the decision to recruit the guy from megaton, 1000 caps is a lot if he's going to die without a fight like my old pal dogmeat did. can anyone share how effective he is in battle?
 
Ok this game really REALLY needs a mad max style buggy to get around in. How cool would that be!

With fast travel, you don't need one. But to the point, Fallout 2 had a car you could repair and ride around in to avoid random encounters.
 
Just because you can blink around with fast travel doesn't mean it wouldn't be worth a laugh to zip around the wastes in a buggy and run over a raider or slug a brahmin or something. :lol

Edit: and jihad jeeping could never be better - with Fallout vehicles, you're not just putting around in some Toyota, you're riding on a damn nuke.

I was finding all these motorcycle parts around, it got me thinking that I'd eventually get to make one. It would be awesome to tear around the scorched lithosphere on a clunky old junkbike. I guess the parts are used for repairs or something though, never bothered looking into it.

I suppose it could have opened the doors I picked, but there were some Hard level locks which I couldn't pick, but the key doesn't open them. And I guess you just explore the vault and find out that the residents were gassed? I haven't run across a sidequest for this area yet.

One other question. What the hell was the purple tint that would appear sometimes and making enemies nearly invisible/translucent. I can only assume it was a due to the gas in the vault

Oh, and I got my first sniper rifle today. Holy shit, that thing is the shit. Love taking out raiders from distance.

You learn that all the Vaults are a social experiment with almost all of them having a unique condition placed on them. Vault 106 has nerve gas that makes people crazy. IIRC, it should cause hallucinations and make you unable to find the exit from your map screen.

I didn't end up liking Oblivion at all but this game is pretty excellent. I'm loving it so far.

KEEP THE GAS TANK AND HANDBRAKE. I had to look for ages to get hold of a handbrake to build my shishkebab. Worth it though!

There was a worse parallel in Fallout 1.
The Enclave not setting the Necropolis vault door to close to see how people responded to the radiation.

I checked the map and saw some icons. Didn't see Megaton's though, which led me to believe they only show when you discovered the place.
 
Fucking fire ants! Burnt my ass up and made me use a lot of my resources. And that quest with the boy seems to take a year so I'm going to have to wait on it for now.

Loving this game so far. Gun battles aren't particularly good, although I actually find them the gun mechanics to be funner than Mass Effect. Probably due to the gore.

My favorite moment in the game so far (not really a spoiler) was running through a minefield
and getting sniped at by Arkansas or some such. I wanted his sniper rifle badly and ended up sneaking all the way up behind him by disarming mines and climbing the stairs. I had to try this attempt a few times because the first few tries I just took him on and I guess I broke his rifle each time because of its low conditioning.

This time though I climbed the destroyed building or whatever and got right behind the fucker. I took out my sawed off shotgun and attempted to pick pocket the bastard as he was scoping and camping. He knew immediately and turned around. I stood up, used vats and blew his head off with my barrel literally in his mouth and his decapitated body flew off the building to hit the ground.

Took my sniper rifle and ammunition and continued on my way :D.

how do you go about it? the camera switch is the left bumper--how do you switch from the reggae third person to the over the shoulder?

it's completely incredible. i just realized yesterday that i was doing the same thing a lot of people said they did with oblivion: ignoring the main quest and getting caught up in side quests. it's not because i have no interest in the main quest, i just have so much interest in poking around and seeing what's out there in the world that i don't want to rush anything.

sewers on my way to grayditch and came across this weird ghoul named gallo who had two lawn gnomes flanking the door to his little skanky abode. the thing that really cracked me up was his party hat

it's something anyone could take a turn and overlook, never being punished for doing so. but the game seems full of little touches and great things to see that you could almost mine forever. i'm hooked.

That happened to me the first time. I think it's a bug. Just wait till EVERYONE sits down and then take your seat and it should be ok. I think you'll just have to reload.
 
I've played this game about 15 hours so far, and I still feel like I've seen so little in the world. I can't wait to set out for expeditions to the north west. :D
 
Yeah. I meant to watch some ball games last night at around 8 and the next thing I knew it was 2:30 in the morning :lol.

Times gonna fly with this baby in my possession.
 
I've cone to the conclusion that Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 are sort of on opposite ends of the spectrum. Far Cry 2 fundamentally only has about three missions - stop a convoy, get to a point and flip a switch/nab some intelligence, or assassinate a dude. They're real general, but that's so you can go about them in really different and interesting ways.

By comparison, Fallout 3 has you doing all sorts of stuff. Saving a town from raiders, helping an author write a book, deciding whether to save or nuke a town, finding your dad, etc. But how you play all of those is largely the same - shoot everything in your path until you reach some sort of Scripted Event or NPC. And the shooting in Fallout is... uninteresting, at best. It can generally be described as "VATS->Headshot, headshot, headshot->Generic shooting as AP recharches->Repeat."

I get the feeling that at one point during production, there was a motorcycle 'mount'. I found a fully intact motorcycle (i think at seneca station, or something... the metro closest to Arefu), and there are various motorcycle parts lying around, as if you needed them to repair your bike (yes, i know some of those parts are used in weapon crafting).

You sir are doing it wrong. The fact that you think its all shooting and nothing else is wrong. Now if you directly compare to Farcry 2, gun play to gun play, then yes it is about like you said. But you forget this thing called "role playing" which allows you a much greater freedom in said missions than Farcry 2 ever could. I don't know how many missions I have actually thwarted any bloodshed by just using words. Now I will say that not every mission can be done without bloodshed, there are a few that require it, but you can ignore those quests if you want.
Edit: Not only that you can shoot different areas which give different results. Its not just headshot headshot headshot. Have you ever shot the weapon out of someones hands? Or someones legs that has a melee weapon. You can easily stack things in your favor with smart shooting placement.

I find this not very effective when multiple enemies are around. Its better to be more strategic. Shoot an expose leg to slow the charging mutant down then shoot the mini gun out of his friends hands is much more effective then taking 2 or 3 turns of just head shots.

Glad to see someone else found out that a RE4/Dead Space camera angle isn't too bad. I had to do this because of the Fov was making me a bit dissy. Could have been the monochrome colors. Either way now I switch back and forth.
 
I started the game this morning, been playing nearly all day, and I feel like I've done very little..as per usual with this type of game, I'm beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed (aka: holy shit, I'm never going to finish this game)

Can anyone tell me how far along I am? I've:

Done all the vault stuff and left the vault
Gone to megaton, spoken to all the npcs, picked up every bit of scrap I can find (legally) and sold it off.
Fixed the leaking pipes.
Got the restauraunt dude off the drugs.
Rented a room, and Nova (seemingly!)
Gone to the super-duper mart for Moira and picked up food+meds
Gone a little further out, and found billy who wants me to find his dad..but i've left him in his little porta-loo for now. Looked around and killed some fire-ants and fire-soldiers.
..

..and that's pretty much it. I know I'm early on in the game, but I'm just wondering if someone could guestimate what percentage I've done, and basically to encourage me not to give up on this like I usually do with these huge open-world games :lol

Intersting, got about oh I don't know rough estimate I would say 15-20 hours, none here. My only complaint is the rare case of tearing, but other than that pretty good looking. This is 4XAA correct? Or at least it looks somehow they are hiding the jaggies very well.

One is a FPS, the other is an RPG.

That pretty much explains everything.

yeah, it's always a good idea to shoot the big guns out of enemies' hands when possible. Rocket Launchers, Miniguns, etc.

...and as is to be expected with this type of game, you've only just grazed the surface. There's much more where all that came from. :D

i feel sorry for dead space. for a couple of weeks there it was the best game i'd played all year. then this comes along and, though not light years better, it's grabbed me in a way that a game hasn't in quite some time. i actually feel like bioshock was a nice introduction to this sort of gameplay, weird as that sounds, getting me used to managing stats and all that jazz. this is a little more complex, and i'm not only used to that now, but i find myself welcoming it. i also think the wealth of content here--the idea that i have no idea when i'll actually get around to beating it, though i keep running around collecting landmines, slogging through sewers, and clowning raiders--is just amazing.

i am thoroughly impressed, clearly

and what an rpg it is. i tried to break it down into layman's terms for a friend of mine, and told him to imagine midgar from ff7 was worldwide, had awesome guns, a thousand different unique places to explore, and actually great writing to back it all up.

I couldn't disagree with you more about the two games and I've just finished a massive FC2 run the past couple weeks.

At this point, I could be no less happy never playing FC2 again, but I'll probably boot it up to try the multiplayer at some point.

If you're going to compare games of different genres, VATS is far more INTERESTING than the gunplay opportunities in FC2. Not really comparable, IMO, but on a pound-for-pound fun-wow-your-socks-off way, VATS has both strategy and flair.

Again, like I said in my last post, this is basically what STALKER should have been for me. Proper RPG story and interaction with NPCs, proper hording and looting (and none of this generic ammo bullshit from FC2), and if you're going to have janky ass real-time shooting mechanics, at least give me VATS. Both games have an overdose of ambience and a sense of isolation where you wander a wasteland, and both games have you looking for someone.

I haven't tried Clear Sky but I love STALKER. You can clearly see why FO3 is so up my fucking alley.
