The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

So does anyone know if you can actually see the UFO crash?

Last night I was walking in the North-West near all the sat. dishes I saw this green plasma-like explosion and aloud noise. I assumed this was the UFO crashing to earth so I reloaded from a min ago to see it again, but for whatever reason it hasnt happened again since.

was that the actual UFO crashing, or was it just some other thing going on?
 
Picked up some VERY nice items today. Finally finished the replicated man quest so I got a plasma rifle for that. Came across the UFO crash site with the awesome alien blaster(best weapon in the game?). And finally finished the Shoot 'em in the head quest picking up the special power armor.

Are those 3 things pretty much the best items of their kind in Fallout? Sure looks like it, they're much better than anything else I've found.

I don't think so, since you see alien blaster ammunition elsewhere in the game, which to me points towards the crash site having been old and previously looted.
 
Oh god, the ending is so shit.


Planned to load and continue what I was doing after checking it out, but turned the game off in disgust.

The Alien Blaster is incredibly strong thanks to its innate high critical rate. It loses out to Fatman and Experimental MIRV for sheer damage, and its ammo is rare.

The A3-21 is a mid~tier weapon. The good thing about A3-21 is that its ammo (Microfusion Cells) is relatively common compared to Electron Charge Packs/Missiles and Mini-nukes; however 5.56 ammo is still the most common ammo and from this angle the Xuanlong AR has an edge over them. Xuanlong AR is also stronger than the A3-21. The other common ammo is 10mm, and in this case Sydney's Ultra Submachine Gun has an edge in terms of ammo although the Submachine Gun is not a common drop from Raiders and I've not come across a SuperMutant who wields one; they use ARs, Hunting Rifles, Mini-guns and melee weapons. Shotguns Shells are also easily found, I would put it as the same rank with Microfusion Cells but the Terrible Shotgun has a distinct advantage over the A3-21 in firepower output.

edit: Rivet City guards carry Submachine Guns. Harkness has npc invulnerability though, if you must farm for Submachine Guns, take out the generic guards.

The T51-b Power Armor is the strongest armor in terms of AR, but it has one major drawback as of this post. Nothing in the game can repair it back to 100% (haven't come across a merchant with a decent Repair skill, never mind 100 Repair), I've posted it before and I'll state it again: Outcast Power Armor, Brotherhood of Steel Armor and Enclave Power Armors DO NOT repair the T51-b. You can use the T51-b to repair a BoS Power Armor and it will be used up. Its secondary flaw is it adds no bonus points to skill, and here is where Ranger's Armor and Telsa Armor prove to be more useful. Considering that followers' armor do not degrade, the T51-b is best given to followers who can equip power armors.
 
uh-oh I think I screwed up.
I'm not that far in the game but while I was doing the wasteland survival guide quest, I had to go to and talk to people in that city where you have to find out all about the history, and I talked to one of the doctors who apparently worked with my dad and all of a sudden it said I completed the "following in the footsteps" quest, but I didn't recieve any acheivement or anything. Can I go back and still get the achievement somehow for this quest? I remember that it wanted me to go to the galaxy radio thing, but now theres no marker on the map for it because it says I already completed the quest.
I want my achievement! Please help if you can.:D

False alarm. Sorry guys I thought I saw it crash. for it a minute it was the coolest thing EVAR, but turns out I was mistaken.

I really wish it was a quest, and you track UFO research scientists around the wasteland with information on an up-coming landing of an Alien craft, and you as the player have the opportunity to go to the proposed landing site.

Only as you approach the site - say, on top of a mountain - you see a huge 100ft disc zip into the atmosphere and lose control of its anti-grav drive. You then see it spin and topple out of control and see it crash a few miles over to the West, and then you have to find it before raiders and other opportunists arrive on the scene.

Now that shit would be cool.

-edit- I just found the explosives Bobblehead.... boy is THAT thing hard to find. Unless you were watching the map like a hawk for on the local screen youd never even know about a secret door at a particular location in the wasteland.

its just odd is all, in that they were saying they were NOT going to do this (since they said they were changing it from oblivion) maybe they had second thoughts...

But the Fallout series was a definate, Roleplay style series (thief, sweet talker, dumb brute, sharp shooter etc)

as it stands in Fallout 3 im a Intelligent, Sweet talking, brutish, theif, scientist with an awesome sniper ability....:facepalm, the bobbleheads (werent in the first 2, or a comparable item at all), (used to be every 3 or 4 outta 20) is what is skewing it so badly in F3

I could be like that in the first 2, if I downloaded a cheats trainer for my games save :lol

plus the reason people still replayed fallout 10 years later is because of seeing different things based on your stats that would change what happens in the game....and dont even get me started on the "WORST ENDING SINCE NES GAMING" that is Fallout 3's
 
Im loving this game so much i was inspired to go back and play the other ones but i have a question. Whats going on with the Fallout MMO? I read an interview about it from 2004 and ive never heard a thing. Hopefully the success of FO3 will boost its funding, if its still on.

A question about that quest.
I had a choice of either convincing the robot to deactivate himself through science or speaking skills. Is there a difference in the ending? I went with science and the way it was done was cliche and cheesy, but oh well
 
Good god. It seems like I can't go JUST ONE YEAR without sinking forty hours into a single RPG. And I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for fucking Fallout 3.

I'm glad I picked up the game. I still think it's ugly, but it somehow adds to the charm.

With 40 hours into this thing, I am pretty much done. I wanted to do an evil run, and maybe I still will in the future, but I already did so much as a good guy and it was starting to get pretty repetitive near the end. Some of the missions and places were just fantastic to run across (Republic of Dave, the Oasis, the town with the superheroes, Little Lamplight, and Andale). There was also a lot of humor from the evil side, with plenty of swearing ("Welcome back to the Wastelands, asshole." :lol).

The main story was kinda interesting. I talked my way out of most of the problems.
Would've been nice to know WHY Eden wanted to turn humans into Super Mutants, though I did like the game testing if you were paying attention to Vault 87.

Only had two partners the entire game: Charon and Fawkes. Fawkes never died, but he wasn't very helpful. Charon died more than I liked, but he was a damn good shot. I think I preferred Charon overall, actually.

So... Yeah. I didn't enjoy this game the same way I enjoyed Mass Effect, but I did find it pretty addicting (moreso than any other RPG I've played in a while, ME included), especially once I maxed out my lockpicking skills.
 
How could you be done in 40hrs? Did you explore everywhere?

Theres no way you could be completely done with the main story plus side quests and exploring and looting every nook and cranny...

I have no idea how anyone can think that Fallout 3 is graphically ugly, at least the PC version. The lighting is gorgeous, there's a huge amount of detail, the art design is spot-on and the draw distance is massive. The game's much nicer-looking overall than Oblivion and most other games.

I really, really, really don't like brown games.

But in this case I think it adds to the game's character. I mean, the whole world went to shit, so it might as well look like it too.

I'm playing the 360 game anyhow.

Yeppers, imo, the whole main plot was quite weak. The idea behind it wasn't bad per se, but the execution was god awful.
Memo to Bethesda:
1) Hire some real writers.
2) Fire your animators and hire some new ones. (Get some people from Valve ;p )

I shudder to think of how much greater Fallout 3 would have been with some nicer animation. That was my only issue with the game from a technical standpoint. It would've helped the gameplay, too, not just the visuals. Especially the real-time combat, which suffers a lot mostly due to the janky ass enemy animations.

And yeah, the writing had a lot of issues and certainly wasn't up to par with Fallout 1 and 2, but it was still a better effort than I had expected from Bethesda and a pretty big upgrade from the inane dialogue and general script in Oblivion. Compare it to most other games, rather than most other WRPGs (which generally feature very strong writing), and I think Fallout 3 is fine from a writing standpoint. It's not a Bethesda strength, though.

I think everyone who has ever played a Bethesda game can agree to this. Their games will never get better otherwise, Elder Scrolls 5 could be prettier than Crysis but if the animations don't improve it will still look like crap.

Who wrote all those books in Morrowind anyway? It felt like that game had much more love poured into it in terms of back-story and setting than both Oblivion and F3 (considering that they ripped most of it) combined.
 
Well, i was told that unarmed was a waste of time, how WRONG of him, im only lvl 12 and i've been 2~3 shot'ing super mutants, most dmg perks are further in levels too.
started with this

S-8 (->9 bubblehead ->10 ant might)

and yes, strength, although the info about it says its only for melee weapons and the unarmed weapon info does not show the +dmg that strength gives, it DOES affect it, tests have shown it, its just bethesda just didnt bother i guess.

luck to 9 with bobblehead, then just wear a +1 luck item, + finesse perk and you have 15% crit chance.

I put 2 intense training into agility so far, i had to go all the way across the map to get the +1 int bobblehead for the simple reason that comprehension @ lvl 4 requires int-4, but comprehension is better than even int-10 or educated if you look for the book, you can in theory max every skills to 100, 50 from books + comprehension, 10 from bobbleheads and you just have to train 40 points into every skills.

im gonna be unstoppable, the only thing im not certain of is adamantium skeleton since crippled limbs arent really a problem so far..

with strength, endurance, agility and luck @ 10, this is the best unarmed build i can think of so far.

It went against everything the game had been about up to that point. Until then, choice was the big selling point of Fallout 3; almost every quest had multiple pathways to the end, several which could change your gameplay experience entirely. The end forced you towards your "destiny", and even if you technically could get Lyons to go in instead, that essentially boiled down to the basic two Karma choices, and throws the logical ones out the window. Fawkes can survive radiation? Too bad, dying in radiation is your destiny. Got a shitload of Radaway, Rad-X, and an advanced radiation suit? Again, screw that, this is the way the writers wanted you to go. I finished the game thinking, "Wow, what a shitty ending," and no game should leave behind that aftertaste.

I wish I knew since a large portion of my Morrowind play-time was spent hunting down books and building a library.

Not to mention the ending montage, I was hoping that the three hundred thousand endings or whatever they said before release would boil down to a little more than an extra screenshot at the end.
"Hey you rescued the slaves! Here's a picture of how happy they are, in case you forgot. No, I won't tell you what happened to them afterwards."

I've been over this before but I'm still annoyed by how poorly they handled everything in the last hours of the game, and pretty much everything past Tranquillity Lane in the main quest for that matter. Though I still like the
code sequence
at the very end.

i did the same thing - if you trek over to GNR and talk to three dog you'll be able to get the achievement.
 
Just finished the game at LVL 16. Just got the lawbringer perk but the game is over :P

KARMIC PALADIN_lvl16_ENERGYWEAPON GOD with high luck = 1shotkills. Even enclave powerarmoured men die with 1 shot. :)


REVIEW SCORE. 9/10
the game borrows enough from the fallout universe to make it more than a competent follow up despite the diverge in a) style b) stylin (fps vs tile/axo). Fallout 3 is the best game to play if you want consequence for your actions (good/bad)..etc. Even the level up consequences go a long way to affecting how the game plays out. In a lot of ways, I really appreciate all the work bethesda put into making the universe of FO3 - in 3D. Scope/tech makes it somewhat uglish but whats there is functional and even great. Combat+VATS is a winning combo. They nailed it imo.



What I didn't like. Claustrophic corridor fatigue. I'm glad I balanced the game with a lot of the outdoor world. The humour isn't as bent as FO1+2. I think the one thing that I thought was poor about FO3 is the overall integration of the world (all those locations vs the main plot). You really don't have to visit that many to get to the end. It really needed a city like RENO imo.

DC was also quite claustrophic with its high difficulty to get through and numerous tunnels.


Endgame Commentary:
I thought the lead up to the jefferson memorial with the robot was pretty damn awesome but the game just ended once you got there? I sort of expected it but it was still somewhat short
REAL PITY how they messed up the endgame. Its competent but I wanted more. :(


BRING ON FALLOUT 4.

maybe you misread/heard his text but from the encountrerI got this:

the FEV virus he wanted to inject into the water is meant to kill all the mutants+ghouls. Maybe the FEV he supplied was perfected and works?
I didn't do it because I was playing a good character and ghouls were my friends! :)
 
Raiding what I imagine is one of the Talon Merc's bases, took me all the way through level 19, so now I'm sitting pretty at 20 and trying to decide if I should explore the wastes more or just complete the story mode and go on to a second character.

I pull out my hunting rifle in hopes of sniping and slowing these guys so they don't kill the knight in power armor. I duck out of sight and recover some AP, then jump out from behind a pillar and put all my AP into 56% headshots. 2 out of the 3 hits connect and the mutant flies back violently from the 2nd shot and crumples when he hits a garbage can.

To my left, I notice that a mutant has rushed my position and is now shooting fiercely with his hunting rifle. I switch over to my well-maintained Chinese assault rifle and pump 3 full volleys (9 rounds) into his torso. Not all of them connected and he's still standing, although the critical hit has crippled his torso (what does that do, anyway?)...

Without any AP points left, I decide to go full auto on his ass in real-time and he drops soon thereafter.

After the carnage, I mop up, grab a bunch of hunting rifle rounds and do some repairs.

Then I'm recruited by the Brotherhood guy in power armor to go rescue someone in a nearby building. Save. Exit. Time to eat dinner.

That's a meteor crashing. It explodes and spreads
Alien Power cells
around the area. It's the only way you can get ammo for that weapon.

Also, the narrator voice is the one that subs Morgan Freeman. Double awesome.
 
Damn, looks like I scared the woman, who sells all the stuff for my room, out of Tennpenny tower. And letting in the zombies was not exactly my plan for the tower. :(

But I think this is finally a good excuse to start over. Made some terrible decision early on and wanted to try a more melee centric character anyway.

They've made very big strides from Oblivion to Fallout, maybe animation will be the next?
