The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Damn neither of those options work for me... I try talking to MacCready, and he doesn't give me either option...

my science skill = 52, speech = 100

:( I want to continue but it seems I'm stuck? :(

Thats really weird dude. If your speech is 100 you should have had the option while talking to MacCready to be shown directions to Vault 87. He will then take you to Murder Pass.

You could try hacking the computer to get through the other door. So your science is at 57? I suggest doing 3 things...

1. look up where the science bobblehead is and go find that for 10 extra points to science. That will get you to 67.

2. There is a specific piece of apparel that give you +10 to science. Look it up and find that to get to 77.

3. Take some mentats which will give you another +10 to science and put you at 87.

87 will be more than enough to crack that 'hard' (I think its hard - not 'very hard') terminal.

With a tag like Pedobear, what exactly did you do with those children? :lol
Pedobear is not a tag, that's my username. I chose it myself. Thought it would be funny. I had just found GAF and there were Pedobear photoshops everywhere. I thought people would laugh and not mind I was a junior member. When I realized it wasn't funny at all, it was too late to turn back and I got my tag.

That sucks, gmae didnt awarded me with the "Scientific puisuit" achievement even if I completed the quest (Im at american dream now) and because of a bug, I cant complete "You got to shoot em in the head". ( tenpenny doesnt know that I killed Mr Grimley)

Damn the Alien Blaster is awesome. Had no idea something like that was in the game. I was just walking around exploring and picked up some alien radio signal. Walked towards it and found a crashed UFO. This game keeps delivering.

There's an even better version of that gun available.

Keep your eyes peeled for any explosions in the sky while you're walking around the wastes.

Shit. I haven't found that quest and been using my Quantums to make grenades. Crap.
Those things are limited supply, so you'll probably have to do the quest with a new character. I've stored every bottle I could find, and I'm still not done it.

So GAF I need advice, I'm having a love/hate relationship with Fallout 3.

I just completed In His Footsteps, which was an incredibly boring mission. Right now I'm trying to wade through the bandit station with the turrets and I'm worrying about the difficulty curve of this game. 1 hour in and I'm already dying at every turn? What's everyones secret? Is it just me??

Anyhow, I worry about Dog Meat (when I will come across him) because if I can't protect myself at all...he'll die in a matter of seconds :(

Help?

Aside from that this game is damn incredible. The full button mapping deserves applause, the setting and scene detail, AI intelligence and weapon balance seem well developed and thought out. Truly a possible GOTY contender in my eyes, and this is only about an hour in (I've heard it gets much much better too).

Youre an hour in? Thats an absolutely miniscule amount of time in Fallout 3 standards. Ok, just lay off the main quest for a bit. Stock up on as much health and ammo and explore. Treat every enemy you encounter very seriously and every kill like a real victory. Take all items of value and sell them back with Moira in Craterside Supply. Work on building a strong resource base, or stimpaks and ammo. As long as you have this you can muscle your way through the early stages and before you know it youll be at a loss as to just why you were having so much trouble at the start ;)

Quick question.

I just got the PC version, and I've heard that getting the latest patch really screws things up. This is the non-steam version. Is there any truth to this? Should I wait for the next patch?

Great advice, I will do that.

Is there a place where I can get side missions and also, is there a way to quick jump to a new location from where I'm at? I remember the game telling me there was but now I don't know how.

Click on discovered locations in your World Map in the Data section on your Pipboy. Only works when no enemies are around and you are in the open Capital Wastleands.

You can't be carrying above your maximum weight allowed either, also it doesn't only have to be in the Capital Wasteland, basically any area with open sky above you and no near enemies will work.
Best trick I know of is, when you discover a named location, find out where in the area you appear when you Fast Travel there and stow any minor gear you've collected there once you've cleared the area of enemies. That way you can dump your excess weight so you can fast travel, pop back to Megaton or where ever, sell off the loot you're carrying then Fast Travel back and pick up more. Rinse/Repeat. It's especially nifty if you have a home where you can store the pile you're carrying and go back for more without worry about it being molested.

RAD IDEA. Thank you!

Yesterday after leaving some underground area at evergreen (and looting the dealer there), after I left and headed east or something, my troop (jericho and dog) encountered a few raiders. Eliminated them. Slept. Then woke up to 3 raiders. Upon killing the last one, a mini nuke or some shit went off like right on Jericho's head (turned around wondering wtf happened, and mushroom cloud with Jericho limping out of it). Was pretty stunned. Seems I have to get him in another fight for him to heal? He has 1 health bar that is faded looking. Also he seems to be radiated as fuck (color of his arms and shit).

Great game. Sometimes VATS pulls off some epic looking kills. I love it. Probably my GOTY. Though I haven't played Dead Space yet.

Ive always got Buffout on me anyway so I just pop one of those when weight becomes an issue.

Buffout is good if you're 20-30 (I think?) pounds over, but you run the risk of addiction if you over use it, and it won't do much if you're 200+ pounds over due to the raider gear and random useful misc. items you've collected. ;) My way takes a little more time, but you can really sweep an area of everything doing it and maximize your cap intake (which, if you're playing a goody-two shoes like I am, can be hard to come across).

You completeted In His Footsteps after 1 hour? I didn't finish that quest until I had played for 20 hours :lol It's Fallout man, you should explore, do sidequests, etc, not rush the (incredibly short) main quest. The best side mission for you to get is the one from Moira at Craterside Supply in Megaton. It's reeeeeally long and will send you all over the map so you can explore and get even more quests. When you're on your way towards someplace, take your time and go out of your way to check out undiscovered locations (the small arrows on you compass that are NOT filled in with green), that way you will find tons of loot, fun quests, weird places, crazy people and more.

About Dog Meat, don't bother. I got him at level 5 or something and he died in the first fight I got in with some raiders. He sucks.

I get addicted to shit all the time. I assume it just doesnt work as strongly when youre addicted to something? (thats how it works in real life anyway).

doesnt bother me anyway as I have a laboratory in my megaton home that I use to cure any addictions when Im back there selling to Moira.

Hey Gaf, I'm thinking of getting this game but I have a few questions.

How is the shooting? I've watched some videos and the kind where you zoom in and choose a body part just looks awkward. And are there a lot of enemies? Really I just want some Left 4 Dead style of shoot a lot of shit.

How immersive is the storytelling and environments? I'm looking for something like Bioshock (not necessarily setting, but style-wise).

And any other suggestions for games like Bioshock? I'm looking for PS3 games mainly.

It is a great game, highly recommended by 95% (guesstimate) of people who play it.
It has a great atmoshere. Not like Bioshock but just as good in it's own way. Once you play for an hour, you'll be hooked. The shooting grows on you, becomes instinctive after a while.

Atmosphere similar (in quality) to Bioshock's. Dripping with quality and originality.

Shooting is quite good, V.A.T.S (targeting system) is FANTASTIC.

There are enough enemies to do with, don't worry they're not as plentiful but they're tough as shit. You and a team sometimes take on one gigantic enemy who rushes and can take you all out with a single hit if you're too close together.

It's really strange how the difficulty curve forces you to explore the world, making your own story as opposed to following a linear path in an open world. It's really refreshing, and this is coming from someone who HATES open world games.

Well i dont know what specialty you took for dealing damage, but, you can just run up to the ant as close as you can, and keep circling it, you'll never be dealt fire dmg, was pretty much the only solution for me since im going for unarmed.

vicissitudes said:
Hmm I'm not convinced about V.A.T.S. Can you go through the game without it and how is the shooting if you're not using V.A.T.S.?

I was the same way until I used it, it works really really well.

I was using my plasma shot...then my colt...then my pistols...then my rifle...then my sub...then my auto...then my nades...then my shotty...

Then I died. :lol

There's just so many of them, do I need to kill them all??

I had a pretty funny thing happen in the beginning of this quest. I accepted the quest and when I got outside this dude named Ronald (or Roland) came to me with a proposition. Me being a female character with the Black Widow perk, I could get Roland to find Quantums for me, him being under the impression we'd do a threesome after he got the stuff :lol

So first thing he did after agreeing was running to the factory like an idiot only for me to see him get mauled by a Giant Radscorpion not 50 meters away.

Obviously I looted his corpse for an awesome shotgun.

The "zoom in and choose a body part" is called VATS, and that IS the shooting. The normal fps-style point-and-hold-down-trigger shooting sucks major ass. You WILL be zooming in 99% of the time. If you want left 4 dead, then play left 4 dead. this is not an fps, it's an rpg and the combat is not based on reflexes but on statistics. You will not be circle strafing, you will not be doing headshots using your supreme mouse skills, about the only thing you will do that is based on your reflexes is taking cover behind things. I mean, you can do those things, but they're kind of useless. When using VATS, you do more damage, you are more accurate, and there are several VATS-specific bonuses you get from perks (such as higher damage and even higher accuracy). Believe me, you won't be shooting without VATS except for when you run out of action points.

The setting and world, however, is the best part about the game. You will spend 90% of the game just wandering around, finding awesome new locations, exploring ruined towns, abandoned facilities, sewers, subway systems, open wasteland and much more. If you like exploring, this is your game, just don't expect it to be an fps in any way.

edit: Disclaimer: there are a few weapons that can be used, to good effect, outside VATS. Mainly the big guns such as the missile launcher, or the melee weapons (since you can't aim those at specific body parts in VATS. Other than those, see above :P

Here's Buffy

fo3_buffy1382.jpg

She's a Lv.19 Saint, although she's not all good, impulsive even, if you cross her. Hates smalltalk, locks, bartering, raiders, brotherhood outcasts and talon mercs. Doesn't mind computers, playing nurse. Loves small guns, big guns, energy weapons, explosives and her dog. When Lv.20 hits she'll love sneaking too.

Edit: she was in a posing mode for this photo, she normally wears T51b Power Armor.

The setting is so good it made me incredibly uneasy for the first five or six hours, 'uneasy' in a "they're not taking the piss, this is a post apocalyptic nightmare perfectly realised and I'm not sure I like it" sense. And I have a thing about post apocalyptic settings, especially nuclear ones - fascinated by them.

There are loads of incredibly immersive touches, like the log entries in the computer outside Germantown Police HQ to mention just one, and the Rapture / Bioshock comparison is rather apt as they both share a sense of retro futurism (Fallout's world is the 2077 as imagined by the people of the 1950's and 60's; just after a nuclear war).

This guy puts it well...

On the 360 version you just have to hold the holster button down longer.

Maybe try that?

That's really bizarre. My speech skill was in the low thirties when I did this part of the quest, but my science skill was at 75 which only helped in hacking the computer. I guess you could always try and look for

an African-American kid in a jumpsuit, but I don't know where he hangs out all the time...I just kind of ran into him wandering around the cavern area since MacCready was a smartass and didn't want to tell me where he was. You can find the PC he's working on way in the back but I think you still need him to power it on.

Before the mission takes off, I think she asks if you are ready and if you answer "no", you can wander off and do anything you want before coming back. If you say yes, the assault begins as soon as you leave the Citadel. When I returned from Raven Rock, I made an extra save and explored a bit more before saying "yes" after parking Fawkes with the Brotherhood.

Actually you get a rad little penthouse if you do the 'wrong thing' in the Power of the Atom quest. so either way you get one and its great for storage. Ive got that much shit stored up in reserve that Ill never use. Probably over 100frag nades and at least 100 frag mines (dont like mines when I have nades).

Another way is if you have assigned the weapon to a "hotkey" or position on the dpad. If you press that position when the weapon is armed, it will be holstered.

I thought i'd ballsed up, but I loaded my save from just before I entered the Rotunda and fast-travelled to Megaton. I've done a couple of side quests since and hopped all over the map.

I think there's still a huge battle taking place down at the memorial, and the
