The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

There is a town in the north east corner of the map thats full of them. Im glad I was a walking armory when i got there.

I was in that town yesterday. Old loney or Old Oldney, forgot how it's spelled. One easy way to kill them is to lure them in to doors they can't enter. They keep running trying to get in and you can finish them off. Otherwise it was 3 snipershots from afar and then the machine gun. I used up all my stimpaks in that town though, they run really fast.

Question: What do you guys do with pre-war money and metro tickets? are they useless? sell to the store? or is there an npc that wants them?

I haven't found anything cool to do with pre-war money yet except
dropping it all onto my bed and rolling around in it

Also, Metro tickets - I discovered completely by accident - if you activate a subway security robot, they will actually check your ticket, verify you, then start killing raiders and super mutants. Such a cool touch. Now I always carry one around :lol

You should have done what I did

I called her an idiot and convinced her to stop doing the Survival Guide because it's fucking retarded. Got a perk called Dream Crusher for it and now she's depressed everytime I talk to her. Love it.

I just saw that option! What does that perk do? I didn't go through with it because I thought the reward or conclusion wouldn't be worth it...

it depends. she focuses on her store, so her repair is better and she gives you a discount. It's great if that's all you want her for.

Edit: If you finish her book though, you get stat bonuses depending on how well you did(optional parts of the quest), items, and random items and praise from npcs that carry your guide.

Ya, this game is weird in that you are never in the mood to play it. Yet, whenever you do, you end up playing a few hours more than you intended.

I beat it at 52 hours.

Knew I should've wasted Roy Phillips when he was at the gate of Tenpenny. Returned there to find that they killed the humans and threw their bodies in the basement. Also noticed bloodstains by Alistair's bathtub. Gave Roy a nice lead salad up the nose.
Related Roy Phillips quest spoiler:
Note that he has a ghoul mask for you if you let them into the tower through the basement. That mask allows you to wander amongst the already fucked up ghouls without them attacking you - I never leave home without it!

Deathclaw + Dart Gun in the legs = Deathburger!

Is it worth it to build one of those rock it launchers?

No. It's entertaining, sure, but it's the only weapon where the ammunition actually has weight, so unless you have high strength and all the strength perks you won't get much use out of it.

Should you restrain yourself from giving one of your skills 100 points before you get a Bobblehead for it? For instance, I'm at level 9 and have the ability to throw 20 points into Lockpicking for 100 but if there's a Bobblehead for it, 10 points would be wasted? right?

This game crashed on me 11 times today on the 360, anyone else having similar problems, usually around the last quest time and the screen tearing was terrible as well.

I finally picked this up last night (PS3), and I love it so far. I put off getting it for some reason until now.

What is the easiest way to earn caps towards the beginning, it seems like a lot of things I need money or higher level to complete a quest. Should I just go out in the wasteland and fight then loot corpses and sell?

Invest in the Repair skill and go out into the wasteland. Kill Raiders, take their gear. When you start amassing duplicate weaponry/armor, repair them. This will raise the sell value and you'll start building up bottlecaps.

This is a shot in the dark but whatever:

I bought the game last night and played for a while.

Everything runs perfectly on my system, except for one minor annoyance:

When I pick locks, if I stay on the lockpick screen for too long (maybe a minute or two,) the screen "tiles" I guess (the screen turns into a puzzle, basically) freezes, and then the screen goes black. I have to hard reset the PC to get out of it.

The funny thing is that I can run around the overworld for a long time with no problems, but the instant I get to the lockpick screen, after a minute it locks up. Even if I save in front of a lock, my GPU is cold, I boot the game up and start lockpicking, it'll do it.

I've read about all sorts of issues with the game and I'm running through the list of "fixes" but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

My system:

ATI HD4870 512MB
Asus Mobo
Intel E8400
4GB RAM

Everything is on STOCK settings, and I have no issues with overheating or anything in any other game.

Well it finally arrived from Amazon, and after 5 or so hours I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Once you leave the vault the game does an absolutely terrible job getting you started. First it sends you straightaway to Moriarty but since you have no caps you can't accept and then he raises the price.

Then there's ammo. What. The. Fuck. I understand it's a nuclear wasteland so realistically ammo wouldn't be plentiful. But unrealistically enemies take loads of shots to down plus you're so inaccurate at the beginning that you go through ammo in a heartbeat and your left to fight off enemies with a baseball bat... fun. And Moira will quickly run out of ammo to sell even if you have the caps to buy.

I don't mind hard games, but I hate games that are hard but don't provide the tools to complete them. Just now I was on my way to the minefield when I was attacked by a dog, probably should have used my bat on him but my health was low so I wanted to kill him quick. Took 5 bullets leaving me with ten. Then I turn around and what do I immediately see? My first super mutant 10 feet away. Great. I just turned off the console.

Oh and the graphics are pretty bad too, but I'm guessing it's the wasteland art style they were going for.

Ugh, I'm just disappointed right now. I'm hoping that once you get past the beginning sections you build up enough ammo to actually go through one single quest without running out, then this game might start to feel like fun instead of work.

Edit: Also ran into a bizarre bug. I would only attack/shoot if I was exiting the pipboy, RT ceased to respond. Had to reboot the game.

Man, I never had a problem with ammo.

You need to explore or vats (or both) more

With certain weapons vats will actually use more ammo, such as with the Chinese Assault rifle which seems to fire in bursts in vats but semiauto outside.

I've been doing all the quests I can that send you out into the wasteland. I have enough caps to buy ammo but Moira has run out so all I got is ammo for the Chinese pistol (a joke) the 10mm (a couple rounds) and the hunting rifle (5).

The areas around Megaton are filled with enemies that don't have guns (predominately) so you don't really get much ammo by exploring just caps.

are you being thorough when you visit an area? check every box/locker? pick every lock you can?

Get the quest from Moira to go to Super-Duper Mart, plenty of ammo in there.

This pretty much. It helped me a lot in terms of ammo. Might take you a few times to get through that area. It took me 5ish or so.

Red Blaster said:

Did. That's were I picked up the hunting rifle. And it was one of the few areas I've run into with enemies armed with guns to loot. But I still used more ammo than I gained (in terms of the assault rifle and 10mm pistol). Particularly with the guys armed in the inside back of the store. They were a bitch.

mattso said:

Yes. Even run into designated "ammo crates" but many of these are filled with ammo I can't use. Like one had a bunch of missiles in it. WTF am I supposed to do with that at this point? Nowhere near to being able to purchase the schematics for a rocket launcher.

stock up. ammo has no weight.

missile launcher shoots missiles. rock-it launcher shoots... whatever crap you have

Did you guys run into the bug where there's a black spot on the floor, you run into it and all textures are gone for good in this session? PC version.

Sell missiles for loads of caps.

Then buy and repair a 10mm pistol, at the start melee works pretty well.

New one to me.

Did, but Moira has a limited amount of cash so I didn't really get all that much.

And I already have a 10mm pistol in great condition.

I'm going to keep plugging away at this game, because I can see the greatest just over the hill. But god fucking dammit does it make me work for it... bad design.

I don't know what the problem is man, I was cruising in no time. Did you try disarming the bomb in Megaton? You get plenty of caps for that one, also with Moriarty
if you tell him that your father talked about him all the time, he'll go ahead and tell you where he went. If you don't mind restarting.

Yes, that would be a total waste. The Lockpick bobblehead was one of the earliest ones I found.

I've been selling all the misc. crap I don't need on my trips, and I went from zero caps to about 1200 today's playthrough. Have more ammo than I can spare too, from killing various traders outside Megaton and balancing those evil acts by giving the old guy purified water. Thanks for the tips, folks.

I made it to Rivet City (?), went to Vault 112, did the story sequences there.

So awesome.

I don't even know what the bobbleheads do. I've put them on my bobblehead trophy thing but I don't see the point.

When you pick up a bobblehead, it clearly says what it does (permanent +1 stat increase, or +10 permanent skill increase).

There are lots of ways of getting the info out of Moriarity without paying him, AND if you still want to he has a short quest that will provide you with the needed money. Also, I don't know how you can be so short on ammo. I played on Hard and even then, ammo was never a problem. Enemies drop so much, and ammo boxes are so plentiful that it just never became an issue. Why did you go exploring Minefield with only 15 ammo? It's a harsh world, you have to be careful and make sure you have plenty of supplies before heading out into the wild. You're the first person I've ever seen who thinks this is a bad thing.

Wait, a game not leading you by the hand every step of the way is now considered "bad design"? I guess you never played a classic crpg :lol

Wow. I'm sorry but how exactly am I suppost to stock up before leaving when no one in town sells any ammo (moira right now has 4 rockets and a couple shotgun shells). Nor does anyone have any cash to buy any of my junk? It seems it's an economy that never adds anything but what you buy/sell. That's bad design. Perhaps it's a bug but either way it's bad design. I've explored enough to have a lot of junk but even after waiting for days there's no restocking something wrong. I've been searching every raider body and I'm taking the sneak path conserving. And what situation had the game put me in? In a subway tunnel (did get enough to get info) with only a bat 1 grenade and a supermutant. Fun.

It shouldn't be considered poor design when a game requires actual thought on the part of the player, rather than blindly following along the path clearly marked for them. That's impressive for lab rats, not gamers.

Just started playing this and im having a problem with wanting to search every possible thing before i go into a room in front of me :lol. I have such a bad item hoarding problem!

Too many objects in this world! Aghhhh!

My Towel tricked 360 is surviving pretty well during Fallout 3 :D

Megaton is a poor community? Go somewhere else where people are better off and load off your junk there.

I think one of the people I need to speak with to finish a quest has gone missing. If I use console commands to bring him back, will this mean I can't get the achievement for the quest? ie. does the game count that as cheating like it would in a 360 game?

The Quest is "Those!" and it's the latter part of the mission where you have to find the boy a new place to live

If I remember correctly
the boy moves to the house where you found his dead father, did you try looking there? It's quite near the diner where he was first hiding from the ants

I've found that their inventories restock if you wait a few days. Seriously, wait 48 or 72 hours outside her shop and then speak with her again. She should have more cash too, so you can sell the junk you pickup without having to horde it.

I have tried there but unfortunately he was nowhere to be found. Before I left for
Rivet City to find his aunt
I was attacked by Solider ants and he ran off so maybe that's what has triggered the problem.

Yeah it takes me back to that house :( Oh well, I would do the console command to bring him back but I don't want to mess up anything else so I'll reload an older save and try the quest again.
