The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I know you get the Winterized version of the Tb-51 Power Armor in the armory (I already have the regular version so don't really care for it) as well as the stealth ninja suit, but things like the Winterized Combat Armor w/ Balaclava are simulation-only.

though you can find a "real-world" variant (Winterized Medic Armor) legitimately on the Mothership Zeta (as well as the overcoat of the OA general).

and you should care for the Tb-51 winterized variant as you never have to repair it ^^

I just got the PC version of this game and am excited to get some mods running on it. What texture mods would one recommend? There are a few of them which is kind of confusing to me as I thought there might be one that put them all together or something. I plan on installing MMM and Project Beauty HD, anything else? I know of things like Wanderers Edition and FOOK and FOOK2, but I'm not 100% on what they actually are/do and what to choose.
Any help?

God, this game is a blast. I feel uncertain what to do... I have a savefile in V87, before taking off with liberty prime and right before the purifier. Can I do sidequests during the broken steel part (That's the two weeks part, right?) Or do I need to restart one of the last saves?

It all went so fast... I just want to try all the options! And where will Cross go now that I've finished the main quest?

How big of an impact will the enabled purifier have? Ooooh God so many questions to ask! Is there a new game+? Can I just continue playing after BS?

You can still do all your remaining sidequests during BS, and can continue to wander the wasteland as long as you want when you finish the DLC, although some places will likely change depending on the choice you make at the end of BS. There is no new game +.

Cross is the female paladin, right? She should be waiting for you at the Brotherhood of Steel headquarters.

The purifier will change all the radiated water of the wasteland to clean water, adding some minor, but interesting sidequests. It's quite different from the "old" wasteland.

I've had a recent urge to play this game again so I decided to make a melee oriented evil character. I'm level 6 so far, and itt's not as tough as I thought it would be but I still need to pull out an assault rifle or hunting rifle against enemies with shotguns or giant ants. So far it's kept things fresh even with over 100 hours logged in this game previously.

I slaughtered Tempenny tower (every single person) with the sword and hammer... oh yeah and i also slaughtered the ghouls that where supposed to move in. And that was on my first playthrough too so i lost any chance of doing any quest from temmpeny tower xD

I have the original version of Fallout 3, should I go out and get the GOTY version? I asked because I am really digging the game and wondered if it was better to get the retail disc in the end.

PS3 version.

I picked up the PS3 GoTY version for £12.98 this weekend, it was priced incorrectly. Winner.

Really looking forward to getting back into this, I played it to completion once as an evil dude on release and haven't touched it since.

Sorry from what I have heard there are no winners here.

I have the PS3 GOTY Edition and it runs well. The problems were more for the people who were downloading the episodes individually.

Wow, the females in project beauty really look way better :lol Definitely starting a female playthrough with that mod on after this one.

Yawn, avatar quote is too easy. Here's another one for ya, I own a 360 and bought Bayonetta on PS3. Go wild!

Edit: To any PS3 owners wondering, as far as I can tell it runs perfectly fine. Only played a couple of hours so far though.

The game (can) starts to get annoying when the savegames reach sizes from about >10MB.

What sort of behaviour does it exhibit?

It used to lock up quite regularly on my 360 (Non-GoTY edition) and I had a lock up yesterday about 4 hrs in (PS3 GoTY). I know Morrowind (Xbox1) used to break itself pretty well if the save file went over a certain size so this is not new to me, I'll just have to hide stuff in my Megaton House rather than leave it strewn across the wasteland!

All on PS3:

My game had some freezes from time to time (not always reproduceable), or rarely a whole system crash. Especially while playing the DLC content. Sometimes after fasttravel the framerate slowed down to less than 1fp/s and if some enemies started to attack the chance of a total freeze was imminent.

After all I got through quite smooth I think (at least for the F3 scale).

I suggest to save before enter a dungeon or fasttravel.

Sorry for asking a question that has probably been brought up 1000 times in this thread, but I don't have time to sift through this beast...

How the fuck do you get this game to not freeze on small indoor areas (PC)? I bought the GOTY edition on Steam to do my third playthrough and I've almost cried at how ridiculous some parts get. Google has about fifty different "fixes" and none of them have worked consistently.

What I've done to make it at least somewhat playable (average one freeze per small indoor area which at least let me get out of fucking Vault 101):

- Edited fallout_default.ini to force my quad core to only use two
- Turned off vsync

There's another "fix" about using some program to maximize the game in windowed mode, but I haven't messed around with it yet.

so it seems that the GOTY edition is a no buy... should I just buy the DLC individually in order to avoid all the bugs? Because I dont remember hearing about all of these bugs then.

Careful there. There's a bug that causes all the items in the containers in your house to disappear. Apparently, the Nuka Cola machine that you can buy is immune to the bug and that's what I used to store my stuff after losing a substantial amount of items to the bug.

PS3: mine is 12 mb..,

I'm having a few freezes, and systems hang ups.

What does the file size depend on?

There a lot of things that are permanent (corpses, items in containers), so I assume the savefile grows to keep track off all this.

reinstalled this on my pc and have been playing around with different mods and stuff, as well as playing with turning clipping off, having some fun. I love this game.

Finally picked this tonight on Amazon for PS3. Deal of the day has it at $17.99 plus my MassEffect 2 pre-order $10 off promotion brings it to $7.99. My Amazon Prime membership will have it here Thursday for free! :) Sorry, to sound like an Amazon ad but I love that place. $7.99 for Fallout 3 might be new best value buy ever!

I'll worry about the DLC later.

Man, if only. I did a fresh install, updated to 1.7, installed FOMM, FOSE, and FOOK2, and it crashes the minute I boot it up. :(

Only bug I ever had was during the Pitt and my autosave corrupted. Just keep a running manual save on top of the autosave and you won't have to worry about anything. I've put over 200 hours into Fallout 3 and that's the only bug/freeze/glitch that I ever had a problem with.

I don't know, but FO3 is buggy no matter where you go. Pick your poison. I heard steam goty is a no go, but retail goty is fine.
thanks.. so no steam version... thats awesome... i hope people keep this updated with the retail PC version of GOTY for any price drops :D

Finally got around to starting a new game last week. I beat it the first time in about 15 hours. I hardly did any sidequests. This time I'm 10 hours in and I haven't touched the main story yet. Damn this game is good. Just finished making peace between Tenpenny and the Ghouls.

I picked up the GOTY PC version the other day but I'm having trouble getting FOOK2 to work. Actually, I'm having trouble knowing if it's working or not in the first place. I can bring up the options menu using the console command and change everything but I can't actually activate night vision, use explosives to open containers etc. I was going to try Fellout as well but thought I should get this sorted first.

I have FOMM and the other programs listed in the FOOK2 readme. Anyone got any ideas?

Beat this game last night. At lv 17, I easily put about 40-50 hours into this game. I was underwhelmed. Motivation for beating it was to check off another item on the backloggery. Seems like all the killing of raiders/supermutants was just busy work. Too much "hack and slash," not enough story for my tastes. But I felt the same way about Fallout 2. Took that "violent death" perk (or whatever it's called in Fallout 3) because I had never taken that [as a trait] in the previous games. Seeing that decapitation/limbs explode animation for the 500th time? Estatic.

I actually managed to beat the game without running into any recruitables other than Fawkes. I spent a half hour looking around the scrapyard looking for dogmeat. No dice.

Thinking about doing the "legendary" BS DLC that everyone talks about, just to see the plot of the Fallout universe all the way through to the end. Don't know. Dragon Age is on the queue.

I think it's only legendary because it raises the level cap. I think Point Lookout is generally considered the best of the DLCs.

Sounds like this game is absolutely riddled to the brimm with bugs! Quite a shame, since I was *THIS* close to playing it for the first time on my Windows XP 32Bit rig. Got the Steam GOTY Edition but after reading the comments in this thread I think I might play STALKER instead :(

Damn, I was really looking forward to another Bioshock-ish type game with lots of exploring to do :( :(

I've yet to run into a problem on the PC. Don't be so*+uptight+*, it's great.

like a dog drawn to a corner of the kitchen where a piece of bacon was dropped weeks earlier, i've come back to FALLOUT 3 and am working my way through "broken steel." hit a hilarious glitch during the mission
in the presidential tunnels helping m.a.r.g.o.t. contain the ghoul invasion. the ghoul reavers started moving at super speed like they were having convulsions and were nearly incapable of being killed. i had to turn it down to easy get through this part, and i'm almost level thirty! jesus. after i killed them eventually (it took a while) their arms and legs remained suspended in mid-air and continued twitching in defeat
:lol

is this the kind of bug you guys are bothered by? i guess i just see a much bigger picture than this. that sort of thing is easy to overlook in favor of the greater vision of what's been accomplished with the game. i've played stuff with far fewer bugs that are also far less interesting and cool than FALLOUT 3. i'll take the flawed masterpiece over the spit-shined turd any day.

So, you hardly did any of the side-quests?
Then you played it wrong. The game is at it's best when you treat it as an open world game (sandbox) and not play it as a linear game. So many hidden gems in Fallout 3.

I stealth punched my way through that part. Oh Chinese Stealth Suit, I love how gamebreaking you are.

I started vanilla Fallout 3 last night. Put 70 hours into the Mass Effect universe within the past month... I gotta strap myself in and prepare for another timesink.

i haven't played "operation anchorage" yet. it's like i'm doing the dlc backward (point lookout first, now broken steel, who knows what's next)

I just played that part last night and had the exact same experience, glad it wasn't just me :lol

I've gotta agree, I can forgive little stuff like this when I look at the overall product of their work.

Should I play the game on pc? Or would it be worth waiting until all the bugs are ironed out?

Hey, I am going to fire this up again. I completed it originally as a stealth character, it was really easy. I am going for a melee weapon/shotgun/pistol brute this time around.

NO SNEAK, wish me luck. Tips?

isamu said:

I don't think there are any more official patches coming; the GOTY edition is out, Bethesda is finished with Fallout 3. As such you should of course play the PC version, both because the console can get you out of trouble in case a glitch occurs, and because there may still be fan-made fixes.

isamu said:

Yeah, any bugs in the game are not going to be fixed by Bethesda at this point, so you'd be waiting a long time. Your best bet for finding any bug fixes would be something like this, but fan-made patches aren't going to catch everything.

But I've played the game twice now and while there may be a few issues, they aren't that bad and don't make the game unplayable or unenjoyable to me.

Well that's somewhat encouraging to hear. Maybe I can look around for some glitch fixing mods.

sounds like you guys are having a much better experience with this. Fallout 3 PS3 is damn near broken with dlc added on, and pretty shitty even without. I loooooooved F3 on 360 but man I literally threw my money away with the PS3 version :/

I want a refund for my dlc purchase at minimum, but according to Bethsoft my PS3 system is at fault hahaha

Bethesda really loses credibility for being so obvious in their lack of quality control pertaining to the port. Bugs are undeniably inherent in an open world game, but single digit frame-rates are unacceptable.
