The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

So I finished Fallout 3 some time ago, but decided to get the GOTY year edition for all the DLC. Played Operation Anchorage last night and near the end of it the frame rate took a massive hit. Dam near unplayable until I rebooted the game.

Also what are good perks to take after lvl 20. I really don't know what to take the new additions seem ok. I picked up the puppies perk at 22. I read that the robot expert and entomologist are better now. Any advice.

The biggest one is the Almost Perfect perk at 30. The radiation-related perks can be convenient, though not really necessary. Entomologist is kind of a mixed bag. It's true that it applies to one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, but other than radscorpions, there's not that much that benefits. You are probably better off using the levels to pick up some of the better perks from the original game.

Grim Reaper Sprint is probably the best perk in the game, so broken... and awesome.
 
I just started playing and am in Megaton.

I'm really not feeling this too terribly much. :/

The problem I'm having is that a lot of the game mechanics do not stand up after playing Dragon Age.

What really has been getting to me is how dizzy the cursor feels, and how I have to manually scroll through dialogue options all the time.

Megaton is also very confusing at first.

I assume it gets better?

If you don't like it now, there's a small chance that you will start liking it in the future. It pretty much continues to be that way, except with different locations.

This is kind of how I felt with the game at first. Now it's one of my favorite games of all-time. :D
 
Then are there suggestions as to how to improve the experience?

Like I had no idea about third person perspective until I hit some button accidentally.

Also, is there any way to steal things without losing karma? Even when no one's around I can't steal anything.

I am also just finding the game somewhat hard on the eyes and atmosphere, due to the nature of the game, is not very fun to look at. It also makes me a tad dizzy.

The stealing thing is pretty dumb. The nice thing about it is that if you steal when people aren't around, they don't freak out and shoot you.

Oh, and I'd recommend NOT using 3rd person view. The animations alone will make you dizzy and your eyes hurt more than anything else in the game. :lol

Honestly, it really wasn't any one thing in particular. Once I started getting the hang of everything and being able to focus more on the story and exploration it just sorta clicked. I love the atmosphere and the setting of the game too. I will agree the game isn't without its flaws though.

Getting out of the vault and learning how the map works and all. But I had just come off an Oblivion playthrough so it worked out well for me.

However, the first 2 times I tried to play Oblivion, I didn't "get" it either.

I'd say in the case of Oblivion, the more you "get it", the worse it gets. It's cool just wandering around at first, but learning about/discovering the level/loot scaling and broken character progression system ruins the game. There's really nothing like that in Fallout 3 (they toned the scaling way down and obviously it uses a different stat system), which means it doesn't get worse the more you play. So to CoolTrick I say just keep playing and explore (fuck Megaton, just wander around the wilderness for a while), and if you don't like it after ~10 hours, you probably never will.

Megaton confused me at first too because of the weird layout. Doesn't take long to figure out where all the ramps lead.
 
What is the difference between the GOTY edition and the regular edition? Is it just added DLC on the disc? Can one buy the DLC for the regular ed and effectively make the regular ed a GOTY ed, content-wise?

Yes. The GoTY edition just comes with a second disc that has all the DLC content on it and you can install it. The regular "game" disc is exactly the same.
 
well i bought it soon after release installed and played it a whole twice, sold it and waited for a cheap goty edition. bought that about 4 months ago, installed and forgot about it. got new graphics card and thought i'd try again although i made sure i didn't install too many mods as i found that to be a slippery slope to never playing the game

playing with nmc full texture pack, 3D stereo sky & water fix ( thanks a lot pahncrd ) and the 3gb memory address fix, also forcing nvidias new supersampling through drivers and 16xhqaf and playing with 3D vision. the game looks nothing short of incredible like this and is a complete joy to play, kind of sad that i waited to play it but also glad that i waited to play it at these settings as its running most of the time locked at 60fps. just need a ui mod and i think that'll be it for mods for me, unless anyone has any suggestions

few 3D screens for anyone that can view them, only just started though so i'm right at the beginning

Absolutely not. There are numerous gameplay differences and the plot is stand-alone. It might as well be a reboot.

I don't understand the Oblivion gripes. I had fun tooling around in caves and sniping people with a bow and picking locks. :shrug
 
so I have an original copy of Fallout 3, played a bunch and decided to wait for the GOTY pack so I wouldnt have to spend 50 bucks on all the DLC (I work at Gamestop) will my save from original Fallout 3 be compatible with the GOTY? Im not sure how the DLC in it works, will I have to install it all since it comes in 2 discs?

My save from the PC version of Fallout 3 was compatible with the GOTY edition. Don't know about the consoles.

agreed. i just beat the GOTY ps3 version a few days ago. I'm sure it's been mentioned here but damn, if Bethesda wants me to buy New Vegas I'm going to have to hear there are no major bugs. Shit the thing froze about every 30 mins, with the freeze every few hours causing a hard reset. With major chugging in between. This was especially true near the end (last 20 hours or so). I wanted to break something.

Good game besides that point though. I never played the other fallouts and wasn't sure I was going to like it. I did play and love morrowind and oblivion though. (still like oblivion better than FO3)

I went about 4 hours or so without freezing at all, shut down regularly as well. I seem to avoid issues like this somehow.
 
Finished Zeta just now, thank heavens. Got the 25 recording things too, so I never need to go back.

I also killed the cowboy and the samurai for their cool gear, no karma drop for killing them. How weird.

No karma drop because you were doing them a favor, they should have been dead for centuries. Also, that gear looks pretty hilarious when worn.

Ok, played and beat Fallout 3. Loved it. My first Fallout actually.

Alright, I understand the basic premise. In 2077, nuclear bombs went off and turned America into a wasteland.

So why is everything olden style....

For example, the tv's look like those old 50's tv's, the cars, the music, some people look like they came from the 50's, and a lot more examples. Shit 2077 should all be futuristic. They have futuristic shit, but its imbued with 50's style. I dont get it.

The only music GNR plays is old style music.

The Fallout universe is based on an alternate history that split from ours in the 1950s. The premise is that their future technology and aesthetics turned out the way we imagined the future to be in 1950s science fiction serials (things like Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, Captain Video, etc).

I mean, 127 years and it still looks like that? I guess they did it for settings sake but it is pretty cool, merging old and new together.
 
Now in Anchorage, just returned to Fallout 3 (my game of the gen) with my newly bought PS3 GotY-edition!

Can anybody tell how much time Mothership Zeta takes to complete? And what about the other addons?
 
Okay, so I got the Point Lookout/Broken Steel PC DLC on sale at Newegg... I'm having trouble with starting PL though. I found the Riverboat Landing (even though the message never popped up for me to go there, did I mess it up that way?) and the boat that's supposed to be there is missing... or at least parts of it are. I see floating furniture and a bunch of exclamation marks in red diamond shapes which I'm assuming means missing textures. The lady that talks to me and asks to look for her daughter walked towards the missing boat and fell off the dock... so I don't know what to do? Any suggestions? I do have the NMC Texture pack installed, hopefully that's not the issue...

Tried installing this for the first time. It's the only mod I'm running but it doesn't affect the UI at all. The files are in the correct folders, too.

I'm not sure if this is a problem but the mod doesn't appear in Fallout's mod list when I click Data Files from the launcher. I'm running a fresh install of the Steam GOTY edition.

Any ideas?

edit: And of course, I saw that it was working the instant I posted about it. I figured it would affect font size across the board, but it doesn't.
