The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

The new one should be Trasher and Eazyb Photoshopped in one body aka The Halo Reach Thread.
Hmmm, I wonder what that would look like.

I'm still debating on whether or not to pre-order this game. That special edition with the controller is pretty sweet too.

It's kind of hard to get excited about this. I know once it gets to be the 22nd though, I'm gonna be pretty giddy.

That's the Bungie Twitter avatar. I see that you're officially Bungie sanctioned now, urk. No gold text on GAF, though.

Hopefully Comcast will show up tomorrow so I can play again. Public wifi ain't strong enough for matchmaking.

After deleting all my messages last night I woke up today with 6 new ones, don't really know why I received such a spike but I got a good laugh outta this one:

Hey I just played your map and, umm, it's really good. It's like the best remake I've ever seen. Like... Midship is not even any close. You have nothing on Bungie, they have nothing on you. Good job on that remake.

Playing Halo 3 solo on Legendary is a blast. The smarter enemies and the doling out of ammo force you to constantly create strategies you wouldn't have thought up otherwise. Firefight looks like it should deliver the same thrills.
If you're smart with your stickies and only use BR/Carbine for headshots you can play almost all of the levels with just a plasma pistol and BR/Carbine in hand (sorta like how you play CE with the plasma and human pistol) while only switching out for power weapons. It's the way the game should be played, sloppy players and only sloppy players should have to resort to weapons like the spiker.

Excellent thread as usual, Ghaleon.

The week of the 21st (from now on dubbed "ODST week") is my last week of holiday before university starts again. And what a week it will be!

So, basically Halo 3 Campaign on Legendary should mostly be played by using the N00b Combo?

I like variety, thank you very much. ;)

For all my hand wringing over this game since they announced no ff mm, I've finally decided to go for it. The campaign being somewhat similar in length to Halo 3's is what sold me on it. Well that and the simple fact that the multiplayer disc is worth at least $30 alone, and I can use another.

I'm pumped to play new take on SP. Bungie is testing their open world gameplay skills with this. Imagine future games!!!

Yeah, I hope they decide to make Halo: Reach an open-world game. I'm a sucker for those types of games.

Did you ever post your thoughts on Firefight? Word is you spent three days just going through line at PAX and got mad time with it.

I think Crysis' approach to level would be the best to bring the action described in Fall of Reach to a video game - large open levels with set objectives.

I've got ODST preordered (but no Johnson for me :/). Bring it on.:D

15 more days!!!!!!

or 2 weeks, whatever makes you feel better. Hopefully we can keep this thread spoiler free until release.

I doubt it :(

So, Bungie should turn the Silent Cartographer into an entire game is what you're saying? Because that'd be awesome.

Variety should come primarily from unique encounters and not artificially through forcing the player to use terrible weapons (see AR). Sure players with ADHD should have spikers sprinkled around the maps to give them something new to look at but if I ever have to touch one I'mma set the game down.

Luckily this is just a hypothetical argument because from what I've played of ODST you can play the entire thing, and most effectively so, with a plasma pistol and magnum (playin like it's 2001 baby).

I managed to do some quick posts while I was in Seattle. From what I remember saying: the magnum is fun as hell and it alone makes the game feel a lot like CE from a gameplay standpoint. The BR's absence isn't terrible, though there's no reason it couldn't have been there like a power weapon but still the game is only slightly worsened by its absence.

I'm running around Orbital in Forge trying to fix it right now but if I get bored enough I'll go in depth. Not that I'm not passionate about ODST, it's just I find it much more motivating to give impressions in arguments than just doing so spontaneously :P

Hell yeah, that would make Halo: Reach really great. I'm glad you brought that style of gameplay up, because I think for a Halo game, I'd rather have it be semi-linear than completely linear or too open-ended.

awesome thread, can't wait :D

is the co-op in the campaign going to have people controlling other characters, or just nameless odst rookies? D;

Glad to see the official thread up. Starting to get really excited for ODST. I added myself to the GAF Firefight GamerTag list. Also started reading Halo: Contact Harvest which I bought when it came out but never got around to reading. Might even pick up Cole Protocol now too. Can't wait to use that Silenced Pistol god damn it!

*throws coat on the couch, grabs a beer out of the fridge*

ahhhhhh, feels just like the old place. Great OP, I'm glad you start these things Ghal because I could never organize something like this unless it was for school or for money lol.

Keep it clean.

Actually, I'm getting more excited to play the campaign as we speak, solely for the fact that I get to hear more of the epic, hair-raising music score. Seriously, best soundtrack in all of gaming.

You make a great point. :D

I am pretty excited to use the Auto-Mag myself. Hopefully it brings back some sort of nostalgia.

Yeah, Marty is pretty much the king of video game music.

Very nice OP

I can't wait to get my hands on this game. I'm gonna flunk straight out of college if those screens are any indication.

Are you also going to handle the online thread OP?

As you should be. As a BR aficionado I can confidently say that it's a more satisfying weapon (though its accuracy should've been closer to CE's pistol).

One you start mowing down grunts from one headshot to another you'll feel like you're right there in CE. It fires even faster so if you're good enough you can really put the hurt on the covie.

On a slightly different note, I've got no love for the SMG. It's better than the AR but is still just a bullet spammer. Most effective weapon to take down the drones with though.

So pumped for this. Have been playing pretty much nothing but Halo 3 MP in anticipation. It'll be nice to delete the map packs and free up a gig-plus of space on my poor 20GB hard drive.

im pumped for the single player, especially since i've been replaying Halo 3 in the last month. CoD style squad gameplay with Bungie/Halo's superior AI...im all over that.

Have you played ODST already? It sounds like you have.

Can't wait for the Sept. 10th update to the OP including all the content Ghaleon saw in his NDA.

Course, I wouldn't be making such claims had I not played the game with my own two hands. I played while I was at PAX.

That seems to be it's primary purpose. The pistol is more effective at taking out Grunts and Jackals, but it's tough to land head shots on the Drones until they land. I remember someone from Bungie suggesting heading to the spawn rooms and grabbing an SMG to deal with the wave of Drones.

They seem to have finally found a way to make the Drones a bit more interesting to fight. Rather than one solid pack that stays put as in Halo 3, they really seemed to spread the map a lot more.

In general I'm just glad they up and made Firefight hard. It's a pretty brutal gauntlet they've thrown down, but that made it pretty satisfying from the time I had with it.

Kind of want that Gamestop controller but I'm not spending $100 on it.

Wish I still had my group of Halo buddies around for this. Now that we've all separated, it's pretty hard getting a group going. And I never have more than one weapon for long in the Halo series. I'm constantly picking up new weapons to use even on Legendary. Variety is the spice of life for me. I haven't played ODST or anything but it will probably be the same here.
