amen to the 'cube runner proves that accelerometer controls can be smooth and awesome' argument regarding SMB. It seriously needs an update.

and a free solitare game just went up, it's as awesome as a free game can be, so grab it (look in the top free apps list).

and here's a question inspired by playing it for a while: is the point of solitaire that every game you play is solveable, and that your errors just make it insolvable? or are there some deals that you just can't win?

Not all games are winnable. Most are though. In freecell all the games are winnable and you only lose if you make mistakes.

I just bought Toy Bot Diaries, and its looks good on first sight. Gonna play some more tonight.

edit: ok its not the greatest game, but its pretty fun. There are only four levels, priced at $3.99. The first level is a bit simple, dunno yet about the other ones. The first level is kinda dull, boring music and a lot of grey colors :-)

so files apparently let's you use a web browser to acces and store, um, files on your iPhone thrOugh wireless. Has anyone given it a shot?

Where the hell is Music Quiz from the iPods? You'd think people would have jumped on that app. There could be multiple variations like guessing album covers, song names, artists etc.

get free sol, definitely the most quality klondike freeware on the store, 2 other variations too.

and you can get games that are impossible to win? that's kinds messed up.

There are no hooks in the SDK to allow applications access to the music playing from the iPod application. There's no way to do it programmatically at this point.

A really cool little tetris clone went up recently called "Tris"

It's free and you can listen to your own tunes while playing.

I got that too, although it took about 3 reboots to install. It's the same one as the Jailbreak version, really slick and professional.

Thanks, Got this. Pretty sweet with some techno music blasting. :D

Wow, this game is your basic tank game (Angle + Velocity based combat), but man does it ever feel polished. This controls feel really slick, and the sound and rumble you get from hitting your target are so satisfyng. I somehow missed this game on it's release date, but found it yesterday looking back at the apps. As of right now though, you only shoot targets, not another player, so it doesn't feel like as much of a game. You do get to play 15 progressively harder rounds though. Check it out, it's free!

Frotz, a new app that allows you to download and play classic text adventures just went up... and it's free!!

Grabbed this this morning, but haven't tried out any of the text games yet. Guess I'll with Zork, but I was disappointed that there weren't any of the old Infocom games available.

I like how you can swipe your fingers "up" and the piece will fly up a bit. lol

Can't argue with free though!

yeah, cheers for bringing this one up...sweet game although it's way too easy! Finished it on my first go. I reckon you should only have 10 shots, 15 is too many!

Yeah, wait until October before buying an iPod Touch. There's gonna be an event sometime in the middle of September. There has been iPod events in September for the past 3 years btw

Anybody checkout Warcraft Characters yet? It lets you look up WoW character stats and look at all of the armor/items/etc... that character has. It's really quite evil. I've been getting the WoW itch lately and being able to look up my old characters items isn't helping me avoid it.

(It's free unlike the Armory Browser app)

Yeah, I love this little game -- it's awesome!

As a musician and tinkerer of sounds and beats, here's what I use the most on my iphone:

1). BTBX. Straightforward drum machine/sequencer, a little lo-fi, but is the only app with a built-in synth.

2). iDrum (both club and hip-hop editions). Very slick, good sound quality, and ability to export.

3). Beatmaker. Still the most "complete" music package on iphone but if you really want to get creative with it, you will need to create and import your own kits. I've been using BTBX and iDrum to create melodies, patterns, samples to export into Cooledit or Ableton with the intention of eventually creating a Beatmaker kit with these sounds. But as good as Beatmaker is, right now it is feeling a little redundant if I've already got samples going into Ableton or Cooledit.

4). PaklSound1. Very cool improvisational step sequencer and melody synth. Very shallow but works well if you record it live into Ableton or Cooledit. Fun to use as well.

5). Pianist. Straight piano synth with ability to save patterns so you don't forget the melodies you wrote. Not that useful for music production but good for noodling and composing on the road.

There you have it. Anyone else using the iphone a lot for music?

Cyan Porting Myst to iPhone

TouchArcade forum user Cougarcat let us know that Cyan has quietly announced that they are porting Myst to the iPhone.

This is a small project that probably a very few of you know about. We are porting Myst to the iPhone. Ok, before some of you start groaning, this is an outside funded project that is keeping a few developers employed… but it is really more than that. It is an interesting and fun project. This is also a very small team with three of us (which includes Derek, Rand (not Randy) and myself).

For those of you not familiar with Myst, the game was first published for the Mac in 1993 and was both a critical and commercial success. While technologically rather simple from today’s standpoint, the game’s graphics and soundtrack were remarkably immersive. The game starts you on a strange island where you must explore your surroundings, solve puzzles and figure out the backstory.

Newtonica is out, if anyone was waiting for it. It's Kenichi Nishi's game.

Bought it this morning, and while it's very light on the features, the gameplay is pretty solid.

re that SMB update - i finally got it and i'm quite surprised nobody has posted this yet:

it does fix the game controls to a level if not on par, then at least in the same ballpark as the definitive wii version. go grab it, gaf!

Thought it was Japanese appstore only, but it's on the UK one too, buying it right now, thanks.

It feels the same to me. Did you actually notice a difference or just expect it to play differently because they announced they were working on some fixes?

Just got the SMB update, it makes no difference to the controls. All it does is add a tutorial, the controls still suck balls.

I don't think the iphone's accellerometer is up to the task TBH, it's more like the Sixaxis than the Wiimote. I've tried other games like Cube Runner and Spinner (Which feature the most responsive controls on the system) and they aren't nearly as responsive as the Wiimote, despite only having to detect rotational movements (Which is what the accellerometer was designed to detect and is best at detecting)

Both Iphone and Sixaxis have instantaneously responsive accelerometers. It's the software implementation in some games that sucks. Try Labyrinth (it's got a free demo) and you'll see.
