So when the iTunes synchs and backs up your applications, it doesn't take the save data with it? Well what the fuck is it "backing up" then?

Ugh!

to be clear: when it backs up your data it is backing up the save state of all your apps, too. so all your settings will remain... IF you restore a phone from a backup.

Sadly, if you remove a single application and then re-install it, you lose that save state since that data is stored along with the app.

Which gets me thinking that OS 4.0 could really, REALLY use the ability to separate program settings and save states from the actual app. that way you can delete an app and not lose all the stuff you've put in there.

Gameloft to bring Tony Ha- I mean Skater Nation to iPhone.

That would be really great

iPod Touch as a gaming device has dramatically decreased for me over the past couple months. Just getting bored with the thing, really. In fact, that goes for all of my handhelds. I can't remember the last time I touched my DS and I only remember playing a few rounds of Sudoku on my PSP a couple weeks back.

It's a phase. Not just for your touch, just gaming in general. Everyone goes through it. It's the same with everything, you get excited when there's something to get excited about, in balance with other things going on in your life.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts has microtransactions - you can buy extra life slots for 99c each.
:(

Controls don't seem too bad actually, but the platform collision detection seems to be a bit poor, which is quite infuriating.

Touchpets Dogs is out now and well, it's just another money zapper but kind of fun. I only ever played Nintendogs on my cousins DS a long time ago and this feels similar, pet the dog, feed it, play with it, turn off the app.

Also my dog went from 100% everything last night to nearly dead this morning, they really want you to buy food and play with him constantly.

Was playing Tap Tap Revenge Metallica for a good while last night. Fuck me, it's good! Four levels of difficulty, friend and worldwide leaderboards, a decent selection of songs... I had a lot of fun and I'm not a huge GH/RB freak to begin with. Are any of the other (eight?) Tap Tap games as good and worth looking into?

Ghosts n Goblins available on the US store now. 2.99. Any other gaffers bit yet? Eager to hear impressions from the non-TA crowd, before I shell out (hell. $2. I guess i can't really be that picky eh?)

Basically just curious if the control is as crappy as Megaman.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Outer Empires is out, and looks really good. Full on MMO that is playable over 3G, G or Edge.

Top down fly a spaceship around and do whatever you want type game. Looks like you eventually can join factions and create empires, go to war with other factions, etc.

You can check it out on your browser here:

http://gameview.outer-empires.com/

EDIT: Looks like the monthly fee after level 10 was discontinued a month ago. So, it's a 1.99 Elite/Escape Velocity MMO on the iPhone.

I can't recommend Outer Empires enough. Just spent the last 3 hours playing it.

The client is a bit unstable, but other than that, it's a total bargain at 1.99. I can't believe they're charging so little for it.

On top of that, one of the developers was in the chat channel the entire time I was playing helping people out and taking suggestions on how to improve the client.

Outer Empires does look like fun. I played the browser version last night, will pick up the iphone client when I'm near a hotspot (damn 12 mb apps).

More info from the dev's post on TA (screens and vid):

So, I don't know how it works yet, but GAF Alliance?

Looks like the monthly charge just gets you access to more ships and faster leveling.

Bejeweled 2 got an update today adding the 1 minute Blitz mode from Facebook and also linking the high score tables between the app and Facebook. Most addictive game I've played in years, I think. The Facebook version, anyway. The iphone version feels a little sluggish in comparison, but I'm getting used to it.

I can understand, if not condone, him suing over a game called Edge. But how in holy hell can he try to trademark the name of a game that already exists?

You...probably shouldn't condone any litigation Tim Langdell takes part in.

So work on my next game has been underway for a bit. This one is actually a game with a point, so hopefully people will like it and it will sound interesting. I'm the only one working on it, so graphics, sound, and programming are all by me. It's Cocoa + OpenGL.

It's a side scrolling SHMUP with a sketchy style. Gameplay will be kinda like gradius.

Here's a video of one level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBm-IQnlvCY (Sorry I couldn't crop it, I can't get iMovie to work.

The controls are 1:1 with your finger movement, but you can touch anywhere...so basically you touch anywhere, and the amount you move your finger in any direction, the ship also moves. I did it that way so you can control it without your finger being in the way. I didn't like the virtual joystick or d-pad idea, as I hate buttons on touch screens. It shoots automatically whenever you touch the screen.

I'd love some feedback on what you guys would want from a game like this, or what you think the game is missing so far from the video.

Looks cool, maybe more "feedback" on the enemies explosion, it seems like it just vanishes from the screen after being shot.

there's a scribbly sound it plays, and particles that I can crank up (I toned them down), but maybe I'll throw a little 'splosion sprite in there.

Yes. The guy's a scumbag.

I said "if not condone," meaning I understood why he can sue over a game called "Edge" as he inexplicably holds a trademark for that term, but I don't condone it. Where I was confused was how it is even possible to trademark something that already exists that you had no hand in creating.

Anyone buy the new Gamers with Jobs app?

It looks like just easy access to their podcasts along with some extras like extended interviews and such

Can you download the podcasts or just stream them?

I'll probably buy anyway since I like the show and want to support them but I have a touch so streaming only would kinda suck

Firefighter 360 Augmented Reality Game for the iPhone 3GS

Check it out!

Firefighter 360 is a new firefighting game specifically developed for the iPhone 3GS using a unique Augmented Reality engine. In this life-saving fire-person shooter, you play as a firefighter, rather than gunning down enemies, you will have to douse virtual flames spreading very fast in your real environment. As you physically turn around 360 degrees with your iPhone, you have to methodically extinguish the flames you see, thanks to the camera.

I am in the same predicament. An answer would be appreciated.

If no one has played Eliminate or TouchPets for a while, ngmoco changed some things for the better and right now there is no date for changing it back. Eliminate had it's 4 hour charge time slashed to 1 hour (started as a mini promotion but it's now stuck) and TouchPets they changed the energy use on the dog to somewhere around 50%, as before your free bowl of food would last no longer then 5 minutes and was pointless.

Eliminate is nuts, even with the accelerated energy, you only get three matches per hour. Energy credits are way too much money.

I wonder what's going to happen with this game.
