So the Apple Tablet conference is just starting. How much of focus do you think gaming will be? Reports are saying that it could possible be a big contender in the game space with a larger screen which results in better control schemes that don't take up the whole screen.

VROOOOOOOOOOOM

Thanks to those picking up Bird Strike.

Hey, Mario you know what would be super awesome on this platform? Shatter. Tilt to control, breathe with on-screen buttons.

Shatter for iPhone is "on the list" but will be a larger undertaking than what we have done so far.

Before we start on that we are going to optimize our engine and improve the Twitter/Facebook/OpenFeint integration, and roll back across all titles. We also have another original title in preproduction now.

Once that is all out of the way, we should be able to do justice to Shatter on the platform.

Best of luck in the competition Dock!

Oh and I finally cleared all medals in beginner mode, now onto medium.

I'd be playing it more but I've been busy trying to get the word out on Valet Hero. So far we have many many, more pirated copies out there then legit, so it's a bit depressing, but hey got to keep up the fight!

Good luck with the publicity! Does the OpenFeint support give you much exposure?

Don't let the piracy get to you, they're not 'real' customers, they're just leeches. They can have my game, but they lose my respect :) I wish they wouldn't flaunt piracy stuff on twitter though.

Theoretically, the open feint stuff should be giving us more exposure, but it's hard to say at this point. I think it may still be to soon to tell what kind of impact it will play in sales.

At the very least though the open feint stuff provides achievements I can earn, and I'm ever so addicted to achievements, even my own. :lol

No, it's a real issue. Jailbreak enabled piracy on the platform.

It is a very real problem. Our piracy rate at this point is over 90%.

When your a group of guys who aren't getting paid it really stings when someone can't spend a buck or two to try your game out.

Piracy of iPhone games is stupid. Esp. when you are a tiny developer releasing games for next to nothing as it is. But it is human nature at this point, so I am not gonna cry over spilled milk - I would prefer people hear about my game thru piracy than never know it exists at all!

We'll put out a free demo for our new game, which is pretty much all you -can- do to tempt those who would pirate otherwise and possibly get a sale out of (some of) them, while still giving them the chance to "see what a game is all about without paying a cent"

Overall it is irritating, but like someone above mentioned, you gotta look at most pirates as no-sales anyway.

That's easy to do if you're selling a game for 60 bucks. Not so much at this low pricepoint though - it's evident that pirates on the iPhone _really_ could be customers because there is no real price barrier.

Just downloaded bird strike and enjoying it quite a bit. Just got an iPhone yesterday and I'm interested in other good/cheap games. Any recommendations?

Get Blockoban. Best game on the iPhone.
Wrong. MiniSquadron by far. We should *really* do that updated Best games for iPhone/iTouch list soon. Possibly make a iPhone/iTouch gaming thread part deux?

Here are games I have or have played enough to know they're awesome. Universal stuff here:
Orbital (has lite version)
Flight Control
Harbor Master
EDGE
Canabalt
Auditorium (has a lite version)
Assassin's Creed (the first one, has a lite version and is suprisingly good. Awesome platformer)
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Jet Car Stunts
Peggle
Chinatown Wars (played briefly, lots of promise)
Minigore
Zen Bound (has a lite version)
iBlast Moki
Blimp
geoDefense (has a lite version I believe?)

Quick update on Bird Strike

- just went on sale for 99c

Of course it did... I bought it yesterday :/

Does it offer much more than Doodle Jump? I'm not sure I really need more than one game in that genre so convince me!

I think it's better than Doodle Jump. No real reason... a little more depth, much better production values, GAF pride.

I've also lowered the price of Tumbledrop to 50% until I can afford the trip. Please help if you can! :) I don't think the discount is showing up in the UK store yet though - is it in the US store?

Bought! Enjoyed the demo, but wasn't sure if I'd really get into it enough to purchase it. Love the face on the pink piece when it falls off the board. The laugh was worth $1.

In terms of an updated 'best games' list, my favorite games at this point are Flight Control and Beat It.

Bought Bird Strike and Tumbledrop. Both are 50% off (was $1.99, now $0.99). I believe both are games made by GAFers; haven't played them yet but will later tonight. :)

Hey guys,

I got 3 more promo codes for the iphone, ipod touch game I worked on called Valet Hero.

First 3 GAFers to PM I'll hand out a code to! I just ask you let me know what you think!

We have a new update submitted to Apple, so you'll need to use these quickly, since when the update hits, I dont think these codes will work anymore.

Codes are gone, Hope you guys enjoy! Let me know what you think!

Sessions are too long and gameplay repetitive. There are lots of ships, but many have weird shot types that just aren't that fun. If I quit mid-session, I lose my unlocks. It's okay, but it's pretty low on my list. Not sure why people praise it so much. If I want to shoot, Space Invaders is the place to go.

as far as the piracy issue....

Being totally honest about it, when first jailbroke, I pirated the hell out of stuff. Didn't take long for serious guilt to set in. Even if I only play for an hour or two, I more than get my moneys worth for a dollar or three. So I wiped my touch and re jailbroke, only this time only legit apps. These guys absolutely deserve their money. But jailbreaking is a must for some of the amazingly cool features you can add. winterboard, five column ,and tons of others bring functionality and customization that should have been part of the ipod from day one.

just played the first few levels and already i enjoy it better then flight path. i like the different stages you have to unlock within each level. my only problem with these types of games is that they get my blood pressure skyrocketing when a lot of things are going on at once. I like the ability to accelerate the cars quicker when trying to avoid the police.

if you are into the flight path type games, grab Valet Hero!

Buh-bye.

I believe what I posted was legit according to the TOS , no? If not, I suppose the ban hammer is swinging my way. Just an observation on apples business model and why I really can't understand piracy on this platform. On the touch and iphone you get so much value for a dollar or two, all while giving the liTtle Guy support to inovete like never before. I saw the error of my ways and changed.

I view that as a big misconception. Because I've known people who bought all of their games all the time. Then they discovered a way to pirate, and didn't buy another game ever again. Without the ability to pirate, there would most definitely be a lot more sales, because people like that would still be purchasing games.

Yep. Very true - without piracy people would certainly be buying games! But it's like pandora's box, once it's open you can never close it-

How are you tracking the amount of pirated copies of your game? I'm fascinated in this. I'm fascinated in pirating iPhone software in general, because I cannot for the life of me work out who is doing it. I know maybe 50 people with iPhones, and not a single one of them even has it jailbroken; not one of them balks at the cheap prices of games and apps on the platform. So who the frick is doing it?

Leaderboards, stat tracking.. etc.

I recently met a fella who actually worked for Apple (well, a plant where they assembled their hardware, but still) who was very forthcoming in proclaiming that he'd never actually buy anything for his iPhone - it was just too damned easy to just get whatever he wanted illegally instead. He said he'd go to the app store to see what was hot, then just grab the full version of it from wherever. I got him to at least agree with me that it would be easier in his case to DL a demo/lite version straight from the app store rather than always just go get a full version...

All the people I know with jailbroken iPhones/iPod Touches are teenagers. I think teenagers are definitely more inclined to want to steal content, because they have a limited income and many are used to only eating what content they can get for free.

My point about pirate sales being non-sales is that once someone commits to jailbreaking their device, they've pretty much decided they won't pay for content anymore.

How did you manage to reach that conclusion?

Did they change the name of the EDGE game? Not up on the App Store and the youtube videos I've seen make it look very kick ass.
Its called EDGE again but perhaps its been moved again... very delightful game. Only played a bit though. Offers quite a few control schemes apparently too.

You are correct, though I jailbroke for themes and functionality (getting rid of stupid 10mb limit over 3G) pretty much, as I used to even trick out my iPod video to look like a PSP and stuff. :lol There are general cheapasses too, but Bill Gates once said, if they're gonna pirate an OS, it should be our OS, so when they can afford it they can buy it. Much the case, I know tons of people who've pirated thousands of songs but now actually pay for them through iTunes.

I have circumvented the issue by listening to hip-hop. Most of the good stuff is free in mixtapes anyways :lol
