People who love WordJong from John and Luke's recommendation on the podcast, they also mentioned Scramboni, it's free and it's awesome, go get it.

Seems like 70% of the good games on it are defense tower games.

They are? The only ones I know of that are worth a shit are Fieldrunners and 7Cities. I have ~30 games on my iPhone, most of which are really good and only 2 are TD's.

To be fair, when we all started development there were none. :lol

I can promise you my next projects fall well out of the TD genre.

There are more but there are only like three that have been major successes. The Creeps being the third one. The others are relatively minor.

I see, then I suppose it's a good thing I got 2 of the best as my first 2. Though, The Creeps looks kind of interesting if a little simple.

Be aware that the Mini does not allow for dual monitors. For me, at least, this would be a deal breaker when it came to development (especially since Apple's docs are all digital).

This is true, my desk at work has both a Mac and a PC, and a monitor for each, so I am not affected by it myself (and I've got them setup so one mouse/keyboard control both). Though even if I only had the Mac, I've gotten used to having multiple desktops, which is almost as good as multiple monitors. It's definitely a feature I think Microsoft should steal.

BTW dude I am having a lot of fun with 30 and Dirty. As soon as I got the gun that shoots dogs I knew it was a winner.

Glad you're enjoying it. If you've been experiencing some crashes in the new version, I think the next update will fix it (need to QA it some more to make sure.) I'll be rolling out some more minor updates in the coming weeks like a much improved game over screen, super casual difficulty, revamped high score screen (multiple entries + stats), and some more unlockables (wallpapers for your iphone!)

Why can I not find Puzzle Quest on the App store? Well...At least via iTunes at the moment (At work with no WiFi).

It doesn't appear in the search as even existing. Weird.

Gotta spell it as "PuzzleQuest."

Speaking of which, this version of Puzzle Quest fucking rocks! Easily the best version out there now. Go you, Transgaming.

You have to type it in as one word. Puzzlequest

Whoops. Super late.

Well I wouldn't go that far but it is definitely playable now.

Which sort of had me thinking how app store developers on average do a much better job of supporting and updating their games and bug fixing on average than console games do over xbox live and psn. Which is kind of sad.

Heh, thanks.

Silly me. :lol

So am I to assume this is the 'full' Puzzle Quest? The same one I already own on DS and XBLA and am drooling to own again now on my brand new Touch but have been weary due to some haphazard tactics?

I may wait and see if that Lite version shows up this week as rumored.

..No. Not exactly. There are three versions - updates - to come out. You're paying for the first one, the second one will be a free update, and there are no pricing details about the third. Each "chapter" contains about 20 hours of gameplay.

The DS version has always been damn spiffy.

Not yet. It's divided roughly in half of the original game. Chapter 2 will be provided as part of a free update in the not-to-distant future, and Chapter 3 will be the expansion material.

edit: damn

It has no multiplayer and its only like half the game. Supposedly they will release the second half as a free update though which is why I purchased.

Its a playable version which it really wasn't before. I mentioned some of the flaws above like some slowdown when you make matches on the puzzle screen but imo it's a not a deal breaker or anything that overly effects gameplay. Its a decent version and that's especially the case if they supposedly release the second half for free although you may want to wait just to make sure that really happens.

Right that was what I wanted to understand. Basically if I purchase this 1.2 now I will get 'Chapter 1' (Which is insane since they are chopping a full game in half) and for all intents and purposes the second half of the game, 'Chapter 2', for 'free' when released.

So essentially I'll have the entire game for $9.99 at that point and then an option to buy the expansion later.

Ya know...Maybe I will skip this and save my cash for Galactrix DS. What a bunch of retards behind this release. Damn shame.

That's what I thought at first. It seemed so stupid to be releasing it in chunks and then charging extra for the next chapters - but Transgaming has been really receptive to the criticism of the port, and listened to their customers. The announcement of them releasing the second update for free is what sold me. It told me that they actually do care, unlike what it seemed to be the case beforehand.

I never overly had a problem with them breaking it into parts although the pricing structure should have been made clear from the beginning which they didn't do and probably drop the price of the first component.

Also the fact that it was a relatively poor port when it first came out stopped me from getting it.

I think it's a worthwhile version if they release the second half for free and I'd be more than happy with my purchase although if it had the multiplayer part it would be an even easier recommendation.

It's a drag though that this won't be one unified game, instead it'll show as two seperate apps. Already I am seeing people losing their characters updating to 1.2 as well.

:::smacks forehead:::

What they should do is pull the game, put 'Chapter 2' back into it and re-release it as a full title and a free update to previous purchasers as well.

That would be a better way of staunching criticism IMO.

Pisses me off the lack of respect this awesome game is getting from these Transgaming tools especially since it had the potential of being amazing in this format.

I did.

Considering it was a full game on the other formats it's pretty much a case of trying to make an extra buck off their customers. Not only can you get the best version of the game (IMO, although the correct opinion :D ) for $15 on the DS these days and on XBLA and PSP as well this was quite frankly uncalled for.

These guys aren't even the developers for crying out loud.

To be fair, this version has all the bugs fixed from the DS & PSP versions, plus it will have the added expansion that only the XBLA & PSN versions have available to purchase. Also, it will have continued update support.. something that is not commonly practiced on on PSP & DS.

I think you have to take into account the market. I'm not overly defending them but Puzzle Quest is arguably a game on the iphone worth selling at more than 4.99. The problem is, if you sell it for arguably what it is worth you immedatiely turn off a large part of the market at the higher price point.

If they were going to take the approach they did the smarter thing to do would have been to make the game 4.99 for the first half or cheaper and 4.99 for the rest so they can get people to try it out and not immediately balk at the relatively high price for an app.

Of course they did the opposite thing by relasing it at 9.99 and then not giving any details on when the rest was going to come out or what it would cost and it was a bad initial port to boot.

None of that is in dispute. They messed up. I do think they've done a good since then though of trying to fix what was a pretty dumb and greedy opening mistake.

In place of new ones though? ;)

I'm not complaining about the price, I've already invested in multiple formats of this game already but then again why not just charge $15 for the full game and be done with it in the first place?

I don't get the precedent that these apps all have to be under $5 especially if it is a quality one such as this.

Once again not overly defending them but the market tends to punish apps as they increase in price. Charging $15 in a sea full of cheap games is a very risky strategy. (It's very unlikely I would have paid that price) We'll see how this plays out with the premium price app store.

Easily fixable, though. The text used to be horrible - they fixed that. In the PSP version, the Companions didn't work. At all. In the DS version, sometimes you got the same exact gem layout. These problems are still prevalent in the versions you would buy today. If there were a problem with the iPhone Puzzle Quest, it's easily fixable.

They probably didn't release the full game for $15 because it probably wasn't done yet. Instead of making their fans wait and wait for something that might turn out to be pretty expensive, they might lose quite a bit a sales - not to mention that at $15, it would be one of the priciest games on the App Store. Pricing models for the App Store have already shown that smaller chunks of gameplay at lower cost is more effective than releasing one big game at a higher price.

Ok, so I just got a gift card and I am trying to decide between The Creeps and Fieldrunners. I've played the lite version of Creeps, and it is definitely fun, but how does it stack up to Fieldrunners? Does one have more options/variety than the other?

Is there a list of games that our fellow GAF members have created? I'm in the mood to spend some $. Someone had mentioned 30 and Dirty, so I'll get that later today.

Related to development, would a Touch be enough for me to debug and test on, or do I have to go out and buy an iPhone? If a touch is enough I might just go buy one tomorrow :lol

I'm using an iPod Touch myself (I'm at the end of my first project) with satisfaction, from what I could see the only thing you may miss is the fact that the phone may interrupt your program with a call. Oh and of course the missing hardware (GPS, camera).

By the way is it ok to "advertise" on GAF the publishing of a project? It's been a nice romp (at the end of november I was a Mac virgin, never owned even an iPod), I'd like to shout my happiness from the rooftops. :D

Mac Mini's what I use at work to make iPhone games. Takes longer to upload the game to the iPhone than it does to compile it, and the simulator runs way faster on the Mini than the actual iPhone, so speed there isn't an issue. More speed would be nice, but I'm just saying for iPhone development the Mac Mini is quite usable.

Seconded. It's not ideal, but more than usable. Xcode and the MacOS in general are quite snappy even with such low end machines.

You better have a big monitor though (I have a 22" 16:10 one), and learn to use the virtual desktops (exposé?).

I don't think anyone would have a problem with it especially within this thread. There are some devs in the XNA thread.

There are also of course the touch arcade forums where devs do it there all the time.

Like Stoney said, I think most of the people in this thread would actually appreciate a heads up from someone who developed a new game or app. This thread has basically turned into its own community anyway and it's always cool to see something neat come from within.

Ah I see. Thanks!

I'm about one week away from my 1.0 release, but I do have a feeling that the publishing process will take its own time. Also I want this translated in six languages so I'll have to wait for the translations.

Any Spanish, German or French native speaker here? :D

I should finish my first project ina couple of weeks, but I don't know anything about the publishing process.. I still have to apply to the Dev program X_X
Out of curiosity, in which country are you?

As for the publishing process, don't worry. I understand I could have done it later (and spent money later..), but I was just curious.

My team is going to develop a game too, perhaps in a couple of weeks. I'll appreciate if you would share your story about publishing later :D

The Creeps is cool and looks nice but it plays very much like "my first tower defense game". It has more maps than Fieldrunners but i finished them all very quickly.

Fieldrunners is amazing. I must have put over 20 hours into that thing. There's only 3 maps but with the multiple difficulty settings and many strategy's that you can use, you can't help falling in love with it.

I just bought and got done with a good half hours worth of this new Zombieville USA game. It's pretty sweet!

Some nice animation, addictive and satisfying gameplay....and zombies! I recommend it to all! It's got a few problems, like the occasional bit of slowdown when loads of zombies spawn and your input not being recognized from time to time, but other than that it's sweet! I love getting the shotgun up to level 3 and blowing up some heads :D

Bought the game, this happens painfully often, I don't know if I'm Doing It Wrong© or something, but holy hell that makes the game barely playable.
