New Let's Golf gameplay video.

Doesn't look all that great anymore. I'll stick to Open Tee 2 on the PSP for my portable golf fix.

Sway should be hitting soon.

I love how the Namcos and Ataris are getting outshined by much, much smaller devs when it comes to iPhone gaming. They should step their game up.

Wait, what? The Atari stuff is some of the best games on the iPhone. Well, maybe Breakout (while pretty and polished) wasn't as fun as some other games, but most people agree Missile Command and Centipede rock. Haven't tried any Namco games.

Edit: Here we go, I know IGN isn't the most celebrated site around here, but they gave Centipede an 8.0 and Missile Command too. Super Breakout, though...ouch, 6.8.

Damn. Nice. Expensive night.

Is Zen Bound downloading really slow for anybody else? Its not that big but its taking a long time which is unusual when I download apps.
Nope, that downloaded in about 30 seconds for me.

Edge update to 1.1 is also out.

17 new levels
5 new tunes
Global Rankings
New Controls.

Oh and folus wouldn't your fingers cover it no matter what side it was on? BTW Edge lets you play anyway you want. So cool the first time I found out you could rotate the screen.

Is there an App Store Anonymous club I can join?

I've only had the iPhone for a few weeks, and I'm constantly looking for new things to get. I'm hooked on the App Store... :(

Im thinking of getting Sway and Zen Bound.

Hello, my name is Lord Gek and I'm App Store Addict.

I just got my iTouch a couple of weeks ago and while I still haven't come close to the price of even two PC shareware games, it is something I really need to keep in check as it feels so, "Oh, but it's ONLY $1.99...it's wafer thin".

I'm loving how, at least in most cases, there is nearly a direct line with the developers who are unusually fairly open to user feedback. I mean, sure, every update still has to go through Apple's App Approval Committee thingy, but I don't think there is any charge to the publisher and therefore no big determinant to get the game perfect.

My latest purchase is the weird-ass game, Totomi. It's a damn original and, I think addictive game (you can play a somewhat simplified web demo at www.totomi.com). Simply put it is an "animal food chain stacking game" but is actually more fun than that sounds. There can be up to 23 different pieces dropping down at the higher levels that all interrelate in different ways (guy A eats guy B but would make guy C sick and is friends with guy D) and you're trying to create massive chains to score big points before time runs out.

There are too many games which are made just to be thrown on the store for a few bucks earnings but it seems to be getting better slowly but surely. Come the end of this year I think most regular app store users will become sick of the clones and simple rushed games to care much, thus pushing apps like that away.

Just got send a copy of Triple Shot Sports for review.

It's an archery/pistol/rifle shooting game.

It can basically be played with one finger and it's all about keeping steady and reading things like wind, etc. Very much seems like a simulation so far, definitely not an arcade shooting gallery type game. Pretty difficult to far, but rewarding when you hit a good shot.

Graphics are pretty impressive (clean 3D) and the ambient sounds are a nice touch. The whole thing is wrapped in a presentation similar to a broadcast of the Olympics.

$2.99 right now. Very niche, but worth it f you like that sort of thing for sure based on what I've played. Should have a full review up Friday or Saturday.

How is Touchgrind? (how big and how much is it) I love Skate and wouldn't mind trying something similar.

And what about Sway? Whats the best game to compare to?

Also, iDracula, FREAKING AWESOME.

Bought Puzzle Quest yesterday, though kinda disappointed with my purchase. The playing board is too small for my fingers apparently. It wouldn't matter except you get punished if you make a illegal move which can be frustrating.

I'm in the same boat, got mine the end of Jan. I started with free apps only, then .99 cent ones, the 2.99 ones... Now I want Sway and Zen Bound. I just justified it by saying eh, I can spend $60.00 (the cost of one 360/PS3 game) and have quite a great little selection of games for my iPhone to play when I've got some time to kill and I'm not around one of my consoles.

Yes, iDracula is very cool. The control is really well done and the graphics are very nice.

Zen Bound is so awesome. Very well put together. Great graphics and a really nice soundtrack. Can get pretty challenging too.

Edge is also a really cool game. Clean sharp graphics, great sound effects, and a pretty good soundtrack. Very fun puzzle game.

Think I'll get iDracula next.

Exactly, and I have no interest in trying to have a discussion with people acting like cornered wild animals.

This game looks great, but in motion... yikes. It looks like it's not running at full speed yet, and you can see there are a number of times when the person touches the screen and the game doesn't respond. Hopefully they spend some more time with this game, because it seems to have great potential.

By the way, totally shameless Hot Shots rip-off.

The same happens with the Wii.

To be fair though the thread title is a bit incendiary for here on GAF which is why I avoided it.

It would have gone further if it sort of just noted the impact it is having on the market and perhaps backed up with an article with some info.

I sort of like the iphone/itouch community relatively limited to this thread anyway and if people are interested and like what they see they can jump in.

I'm getting it no matter what so I'll provide a report for it when it comes on whether its worthy or not. I love Hot Shots and a clone of it is more than welcome.

Try to only tap the screen instead of applying pressure like a button press if that's what you are doing, it's a fairly scaled down bored.

I noticed now twice when booting the game up that some graphics load wrong in fights so I have to close the app and launch it again.

Can someone please help me with a problem i'm having?I'm trying to get some apps to sync with my GB ipod touch (specifically Puzzle Quest Lite and Tower Blox Lite).I download them and they show up in the applications section of itunes (both in the library section and the section where it asks me do I want to sync it with my ipod) but whenever I try to sync my ipod with the apps they just don't show up on it.I haven't had a problem installing apps before and was even able to install another app since discovering this problem (think it was iDie or something) but I can't get these 2 apps to sync with my ipod, any ideas?

I guess it does look a bit rough around the edges. With the way people update Apps I am sure they will work out the kinks. I didn't see any real break indications on the putting green, and the framerate seemed a little rough. Still, it's an arcade golf game that I can take anywhere, so I am definitely in on day one.

I'm loving:

1) iDracula
2) Fieldrunners
3) Edge
4) Textropolis
5) Rolando
6) The Creeps

A couple games I also think are worth mentioning:

Paradise: The Beginning, which I think the iDracula devs got some inspiration from - specifically the control wheels. Paradise shows a lot of promise, but hasn't been updated since I bought it months ago. It's a vehicular riff on Geometry Wars in a post apocalyptic city, but is seriously lacking in any kind of variety (especially the enemies). The intro splash screen is wicked looking and the art is really nice, so the promise of what could be (or sadly, might have been) is tantalizing - especially after freaking out over iDracula like I have been.

Samurai Puzzle Battle: totally overlooked Puzzlequest/match 3 fusion style game. It's a lot like Risk (the board game) with match 3 puzzles taking the place if dice rolls. It's in a cool Feudal Japan meets Steampunk fantasy setting and has some nice 2D sprites. I think I love the idea of it more than the actual implementation - but it's a really polished game and worth checking out.

Are they ticked in the applications tab before you sync? possible that they are not ticked for what ever reason.

You have the latest firmware? since puzzle quest was updated just the other day you might need the latest touch update if you not applied one.

the-oregon-trail-20090209000943463_640w1.jpg

If you’re a Gen-X’er and you’ve spent any time at all in a computer lab at school in the ’80s, you almost certainly have fond memories of one of the most popular educational computer games ever written: The Oregon Trail.

The Oregon Trail is an educational computer game developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann and Paul Dillenberger in 1971 and produced by MECC in 1974. The game was inspired by the real-life Oregon Trail and was designed to teach school children about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the trail. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon’s Willamette Valley by way of the Oregon Trail via a Conestoga wagon in 1848.

Thanks to a commercial floppy release of the game in 1985, Apple IIs and PCs in every school across the land started hitching students to a wagon train blazing a trail out west. And the thing was, despite being an educational game, it was actually fun!

Last year Gameloft brought this frontiering classic to mobile handsets and brought home the Best Casual Mobile Game of 2008 award. The Oregon Trail for mobile made it to the top 10 download lists for the Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T networks. And so it’s no wonder (as Gen-X’ers ourselves…) that we were excited to see the first photos of Gameloft’s iPhone version of The Oregon Trail surface earlier this month.

This week I had a chance to visit Gameloft’s Manhattan offices and speak with several members of the team about the iPhone version and even do a little trailblazing myself.

The first thing anyone familiar with the original game will notice about the iPhone version is its complete (and lovely) graphical overhaul–this does not look like a game from the ’70s. The second thing one notices is a reduction of the number of very minute details that go into setting up an expedition. As the game’s producer explained, it can take a good 10 minutes to fully equip a wagon train at the start of the original, which is not conducive to a typical on-the-go gameplay scenario. The developers have, instead, chosen to present various fully outfitted wagon “packages” that can be easily selected, allowing the mobile gamer to quickly hit the trail. I do not feel, after having spent time with the iPhone version, that these abbreviations lessen the game, but rather, simply make it feasible for a mobile platform.

Once on the trail, the game progresses much as it did in the original: move from landmark to landmark, ford rivers, lose a wagon wheel, get attacked by marauders–that kind of thing. But thanks to a bit of creative license on the part of Gameloft, the trail is a little more “eventful” than it was in the original. For one, more events–both good and bad–befall the wagon train on its journey down the trail. (And as the game’s producer told me, “some of the bad things are really bad!”) Load screens feature humorous trail trivia and, what’s more, an assortment of historical figures are traveling the trail as well–Samuel Morse and John L. O’Sullivan, for instance–and will introduce themselves and set out various goals for the travellers to accomplish. And this, in part, leads us to the mini games.

At various points along the trail your party will be invited to engage in one of eight different mini games, one of Gameloft’s notable additions to the title. Occasionally your companion “trail boss” will invite you to do a bit of hunting to increase your party’s food stores. Fishing is another activity represented by a mini game, as is the task of repairing your wagon (hammer and nail) and even tapping out a bit of morse code. (Every mini game I spent time with was touch controlled.) They start out simply but increase in difficulty the more you choose to engage in them. And, aside from the first occurrence of each, you do have a choice of playing or passing.

Some readers fond of the original expressed concern that Gameloft’s iPhone offering might be simply an Oregon Trail-themed string of mini games. This is not the case. The Oregon Trail for the iPhone is, at its core, the original game given a makeover as well as a series of tweaks and enhancements that help bring the title forward 30 years for today’s mobile gamer.

[ We will, very shortly, be posting a game trailer video to this article. Check back! ]

What can I say? I had the game in my hands for only a short while, but I must agree–as the t-shirt that was bestowed upon me by the Gameloft gang suggests, The Oregon Trail for iPhone really does seem to make dysentary fun again!

Our readers were asking for it, and The Oregon Trail goes gold on Friday and will debut in the App Store on either February 28th or March 1st for $5.99. Stay tuned for a closer look next week.

that thread is a lost cause, man.

Now that I've put some time into it I can officially say that Zen Bound is dope. In an odd way it reminds me of Katamari except its a game that was actually designed with the iphone in mind conceptually.

I think it'll be a more interesting discussion when all handhelds have robust DD services. then we can compare/ contrast and see how the companies approach it differently.

Tell more, I'm all intrigued and shit.

A big question about this game that will have it win a ZILLION POINTS over Puzzle Quest in my book, can you actually lose in this game? In Puzzle Quest LOSING HAS NO CONSEQUENCE! If you lose you're simply asked if you want to replay the battle in PQ, I mean, heck, it's not even like you lose a day of game time...you simply replay the battle until you win or give up. I'm thinking, while I've never been much of a Risk fan, I like the idea of a Puzzle/Strategy game in which a failed battle, while hopefully not instantly ending the game for you (in most cases), has some serious consequences.

You're supposed to help me out of my addiction, not feed it. ;) I tried the flash version for a bit today, seemed kinda neat. On that note, I wound up buying Sway and Zen Bound, only played them briefly just to get a quick impression, but I wasn't disappointed.

Damn you App Store.

Honestly though, there are some decent efforts out there, and I don't mind giving the devs what they deserve. All things considered, even $5 for a pretty good game is cheap.

Hi guys, we finally released Tower Bloxx for I-phone:
http://wireless.ign.com/articles/949/949484p1.html

"Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3D

Tower Bloxx is an award-winning and highly addictive game with over 4 million players on Facebook and other gaming platforms.

Reach the skies in a wacky skyscraper construction game that tests your reflexes and puzzle skills! Immerse yourself in a full 3D experience and create a thriving metropolis in City Building Mode with three distinctive districts, 70 levels, and four types of towers. Compete with others in Party Multiplayer Mode or play endlessly in the Quick Game Mode! Build the entire city block now!"

Links to download free and full versions here:
http://www.digitalchocolate.com/iphone/

Please send me feedback! :)

Game legitmately deserves a pimping post. Good game. Very simple play wise as it mainly comes down to timing a drop with a button press to stack towers. It doesn't really push the full functionality of the iphone like some of the other tower stacking games on the market (meaning no balancing via the iphone, not real twisting or turning of blocks via touch gestures) but sometimes there is a charm in having a fairly simply tightly compacted game design no matter what the platform is versus throwing everything and the kitchen sink in a game. The strategy comes more in the building placement portion of the game. And it's a really pretty game in a way I appreciate in that it is functionally good looking versus just being showy and kind of being a mess like how some games end up.

IGN said:
You are both a city planner and a crane operator. You must erect skyscrapers to maximize the population of your town. A swinging crane dangles building blocks over a clean foundation. Tap the screen to release the piece. You must stack the blocks as straight as possible. The faster you assemble the tower (and keep it marginally straight), the more citizens move into the building. Once you complete the tower, you drop a capstone on top of it.

Now you move to the strategy half of the game. You tap a square on the grid to install the tower. At first, you only have one small tower. However, as you reach population thresholds, new, taller towers became available. Each type of tower is painted a different color. Only certain color towers can exist next to others. So, you must figure out how to arrange the city to have the maximum number of tall towers bursting with citizens.

The two halves of the game make Tower Bloxx a greater sum. Use the quick game before digging in to practice stacking towers, which is trickier than it looks. It is a game of timing and although the touch screen is very responsive, you need to get a feel for the momentum of the crane. Once you have it down, I guarantee you will sink hours into the main game mode where you fill out city blocks with your buildings.

Tower Bloxx Deluxe is a great addition to the App Store. I wish it was there at launch! The game perfectly blends action-based puzzling with strategy to make a very compelling play that gamers of all stripes will love. If you've already played Tower Bloxx to death elsewhere, the value here may be suspect. But if you are a newcomer, there is no reason not to download the game.

8.5 out of 10

Yeah, pretty random release. For some reason I thought Nintendo published that, not Taito, on the DS/Wii...

I'm kinda tempted to buy it...

Do people really play games on their phone to completion?

I've purchased exactly one game on my iPhone (Dropship) and everything else I grabbed either when it was free or a lite version. I can't find myself staying interested in anything for more than a few minutes.

Outside of Fallout 3 and the Lost and the Damned I've played my iphone more than any other platform since the year began. It's a perfect chillout device while I'm lying in bed. It's replaced audiobooks in the meantime for me which was my old pre-sleep activity.

It also helps that most of the games aren't of the "completion" type and are arcade related although since I've bought Puzzle Quest (again on another platform) I've been powering through that.

If the game is good i'll keep on playing it but there has been a few times where i've brought the game for £1.79, played it for half hour and not really gone back to it but only a few games have done that to me, i'm much more careful with my buys now and only grab it if I really feel it's worth it as there is a fair bit of app padding out there from people.

Games which I have played to the end or still progressing with:

Fastlane
Ferrari GT
PuzzleQuest
geoDefense
Crazy Snowboard
Armado
iDracula
ExZeus
Super Deadbeef
Jelly Car
Rebel Onslaught
Tiki Towers
Bounce On

And games I play now and again:

LightBike (good 2p split screen)
SlotZ Racer (good multiplayer on one device
Big Racing
Biplane

Namco bringing a snowboarding game to the iPhone/touch, looks quite fast paced going by their rather messy trailer.
