Drop7 and Azkend are unbelievably awesome.

And sadly neither game has every really caught fire like it should. It sort of burns me a little to see worse games have higher sales but taste is variable and I should just chill out and enjoy what I have. ;)

I finally got to play some Underworlds tonight:

It's iDiablo. Remove the dpad and tap away. Of course, there is definitely room for improvement. There doesn't seem to be a map of any sort, no classes(coming in the first update), and the "tap detection" for lack of a better phrase needs a little TLC, especially on enemies. All in all though, it's the closest we're liable to get to Diablo unless Blizzard wakes up and realizes there is money to be made. Easily worth $5 for me, warts and all.

Good impressions. I'll definitely get around to buying it but I want a bit more content before I leap in so I'll wait for a content update and then hop aboard.

Hopefully this will be the first of many Diablo clones on the iphone.

Somebody should port over Fate.

So loot galore? :)

Supposedly there are thousands of items. I just picked up an Amulet of the Crow but I didn't have enough cash for the Bastard Sword of the Ram. :(

One thing I really like, potions and teleportation medals don't take up inventory slots. Very nice.

@Stoney, there is a ton of stuff that should be ported. My list is a mile long.

Not really interested in it myself but if you are, an iphone version of Silent Scope the arcade title came out.

Itunes Link $5.99

I hope games like underworld get the bluetooth wireless treatment once OS3.0 is out, I would get my cousin to buy a touch and we could both go slay skeletons and shit.

So will the game ever go online?

Almost certainly not. Online internet play still seems to be a dark continent for the iphone which makes zero sense of course because that is how most of us buy the games on the platform. That being said I'd be more than happy with a good single player Diablo clone.

Damn. After finding a few games that I'm REALLY enjoying, and playing them for longer than say... 15 minutes to a half hour, you really begin to see just how dreadful the battery on this device is. It seems to me that the two biggest challenges Apple must address to make this a (more) viable gaming platform are to make the battery last much longer, and to create a way for my saved games to last even after I delete a game from my phone but still keep the app on my computer.

Case in point...

Just downloaded GeoDefense after playing the lite version. I'm having more fun with it than I did Field Runners, because of the set levels/challenges. I want to delete Field Runners from my phone, but if I do then all of my progress/high scores are gone. So do I keep it on there forever because of the chance that I may want to play it again and see what my old bests were?

Grrr

I want to recommend Snake Galaxy. Posted about it a couple of pages back.

I'll just copy what I wrote on T-A, a couple of days ago:

...

I've opened up the six worlds and must say that I'm very satisfied with this game. The visuals are stunning, the textures on the planets are varied and it all looks great (I think it'd be a good idea to have the same "snake" through all levels though, not themed to the planets textures, give it a feeling of continuation by having the central character stay the same throughout the game, if that makes any sense).

The controls work well (you touch the screen where you want the snake to travel).

The best snake game I've played in... forever? I wasn't sure that a snake game would hold any interest for me now. I mean, the original game is a classic, but the concept hasn't really been developed into something new (at least that I've seen) since then. Snake Galaxy is a great update of the concept, the added dimension of travelling over spheres makes a big difference.

...

So, yeah. It's snake on spheres. And I can understand why that doesn't sound fantastic. But it's a good game and the obstacles on the planets, combined with the combo point system works great.

The six worlds won't take long to complete, and then it's a matter of beating your highscores. I'm hoping for an update with online leaderboards, but if no one is playing the game, it wouldn't really matter.

Found a new video on Youtube. This shows off the 2nd and 3rd planet. The best ones, in my opinion, is world 5 and 6. But this will give you all the information you need about the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4A5QZGjJ6E

It's $3,99, and I guess that may seem a bit high.

I tried the online flash demo for Azkend and while it is a lot of fun it basically plays like Jewel Quest (Also on the app store) so maybe that is why it didn't take off like you hoped. Either way once I finish up Montezuma I may just snag it though...Very enjoyable and the iPhone version looks really polished as well.

Does anyone have a solid list of the object seek and find titles available BTW? My wife steals my Touch every night to play them in bed and I think she's been through most of the good ones already...Everest, Yard Sale, and that Little Shop one as well.

I found Buckingham Palace but I also secretly ordered her a 8 gig Touch of her own so I don't want to tell her that one exists yet until she gets it from Amazon on Saturday. heh.

National Geographic: Herod's Last Tomb
Stone of Destiny
Agents of Interpol

Are some others although I don't have a definitive list or anything.

Stone of Destiny seemed to have issues with the backgrounds being too dark...

National Geographic is supposedly over in like 30 minutes and Interpol reportedly has horrible bugs that crash and freeze the game constantly.

Thanks for the suggestions though. :)

You read my book you magnificent bastard!

I keep going back to Lets Golf! in the app store...my finger hovering over $5.99. For whatever reason buying a game for my iPhone is like buying a new car. I have to do extensive research to make sure my purchase, equal in price to a tuna fish sandwich is worth it. Whats wrong with me?

So I went on a tear the last week and have bought all of the following games.

PuzzleQuest
WordFu
O.D.E.
Drop7
Azkend
Baseball Superstars
FlightControl
iDracula
UniWar
Zombieville USA
Eliss
Fieldrunners
KarmaStar
Topple 2
Tornado Mania

I'm pretty sure my total for all of these was less than the cost of a DS game. I haven't had a chance to play all of them yet but I can definitely recommend:

O.D.E.
Drop7
FlightControl
Topple 2
Baseball Superstars

Does anyone know of or have recommendations for any Roguelike, Wizardy like, or adventure games?

Rogue Touch?

::: crickets :::

I'm not touching Underworlds until I see more content and better controls. No point in jumping the gun over a $5 app when there are too many other things to buy.

If you end up buying the game you will get your money's worth, there is plenty to do but I myself have taken a break from the game. Once you get the hang of putting and the courses they are rather simple to complete with a good score.

The already awesome Galcon getting a 1.5 update.

Galcon v1.5 brings the following enhancements:

Added 2 vs 2 Team play! Now you can play with your friends against your enemies!
Overhaul of the on-line rankings feature so we are able to deliver more accurate and detailed stats!
Added "friends" feature to Galcon.com, so now you can join your friends to play!
Resolved issues with network disconnect after playing for more than 15 minutes.
All users are now ranked, even unregistered users, so you'll always know what level of player you are up against.

It looks like the 1 billion mark should be hit sometime this afternoon/evening for those keeping track.

I need to stay away from this thread. Every single time I check it I wind up buying a new game (this time it was Galcon).

Akzend is fantastic. I just snagged it and played a few rounds, it's very nicely done and polished. I love the smoothness of the tile selection with my finger.

Everyone needs to pick it up now.

Quick question, is it normal that games tend to suck the living hell out of my 2nd Gen Touch's battery?

I'm coming off a relatively recent recharge and between Akzend and Bookworm I'm probably looking at 2 hours or so if I were to guess. I've got all the usual stuff shut off (Outside wireless) and my brightness is probably around 25% if that at all times.

Just worried I have a crappy battery, I've owned it for two months.

My experience with the 2g touch is that the battery is by far its weakest feature. I seriously burn through battery on any game that uses the processor very much. I can usually tell just how hard it's working based on how hot it gets, and with Azkend especially the thing could practically burn my hand. So yeah, you're not alone on this one.

I'm about to buy Underworlds. Good decision? I'm itching for some loot action so bad that I'm considering playing Too Human.

It's good but relatively short. You are basically gambling that it will sell enough to warrant the promised updates if you buy it now. That's the best way to look at it.

How many of them were fart apps?

Actually there has been a listing on itunes for the most popular apps of all time to coincide with the contest.

http://www.apple.com/itunes/billion-app-countdown/

And for the contest purposes I would assume any popular free app has contributed more than any paid app.

As for paid apps a more useful metric as always would be total revenue for paid apps which would combine unit sales with price but apple refuses to take the smart route and use that metric.

For what it's worth here is the IGN review for it.

Closing Comments
Think on this for a moment: Assassin's Creed is an enhanced version of a $30 Nintendo DS game for only $10. For $10, you are getting around six hours of game. That is the very definition of value and a huge reason why I am bullish on the game. Set aside the fact that the game looks amazing and is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack. This is a console game for your iPhone that sacrifices very little. The controls may not be to every gamer's liking, but I was very comfortable with the virtual stick and suffered only a few instances of slipping off a rooftop or beam. Assassin's Creed set a new bar for the kind of hardcore/traditional games the iPhone can host. I cannot wait to see what tops it.

IGN Ratings for Assassin's Creed (iPhone)
Rating Description
out of 10 click here for ratings guide
8.7 Presentation
A stunning production with enhanced visuals, easy menus, and good controls.
9.0 Graphics
A new highwater mark for the iPhone. Surpasses the DS version in every way.
8.0 Sound
Great sound effects and soundtrack. Altair's voice actor could use a little more interest in his work, though.
8.0 Gameplay
Solid controls and smooth play. Some of the minigames are hokey, though. These could have been cut.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
A true showpiece for the iPhone and proof the device can play console-quality games. Recommended.
8.3
Impressive OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

What do people think of Assassin's Creed? IGN review looks promising.

Also, anyone have any other awesome tower defense games? I have Fieldrunners and Geo Defense.

Does Assassins Creed have the same story as the console game? Or is it like a side story?

Side story I believe.

7 Cities is great. Must own.

The Creeps is pretty good.

There are a number of good ones on a tier below that but that's the top tier.

7 Cities is awesome and very mature(meaning there have been many updates).

So, Underworlds is okay but the controls kind of suck right now. I turned off the d-pad, and it's still clunky.

Definitely needs a control update but basically they have a pretty darn good base engine. Really pretty imo.

It really is an impressive Diablo Clone engine in the most positive sense of that word. Now it's up to them to actually turn it into a real solid game via updates like some of the more impressive efforts on the iphone have.

Underworlds is difficult. I'm playing on normal and it took me quite a few tries and a lucky sword drop to beat the ogre guy. I'm still enjoying it of course.

And I bought Drop7 tonight. O.O Unbelievably awesome.

Glad to hear your enjoying it. Drop7 is one of those games that looks so bland via the screenshots I think its a turn off but once you start actually playing and then really figure out how to play it's one of the best puzzle games I've ever played.

Totally agree. When I first saw it, I totally looked past it because it looked really uninteresting. Then, after I heard so much about it, I bought it and was blown away.

I played Assassin's Creed on DS and hated it, don't think it will suddenly be better on the iMachine.

And I am very happy with my purchase of WordFu and KarmaStar yesterday, love them both, and both are very addicting.

Sudoku + Tetris + OMG is the best way to describe it.

We just submitted our game on Monday (4/20)!

Here's a video (apologies for the quality - I did it in iMovie and I suck as an editor):

http://vimeo.com/4287705

Wooo! And some early press!

http://www.vg247.com/2009/04/23/trixel-first-movie/#comments
http://fingergaming.com/tag/trixel/

It's called Trixel and it's very simple.

- You move to flip the tiles on the board and match the pattern on the top left.

- You have limited moves to do it.

- You can only move one space horizontally or vertically adjacent.

- You also have to consider 'super tiles' later on, such as tiles that flip all tiles within a radius, tiles that warp you elsewhere or tiles that you need to step over in a specific order.
