Is Underworlds a good game, or is it a good game for iPhone standard?
I remember playing Untold Legends on the PSP, people liked it because the expectation on the PSP was low, but I didn't like it that much.

Supose to only be 3 hours long right now until a content update comes out, if it's still at the low 1$ price buy it like the rest of us :P

It's perfectly fine for 99 cents. The hope obviously of course is that down the road like The Creeps, or 7 cities, or any game that has been heavily updated is that it will become an exceptional game. It's not an exceptional game now because it doesn't have the content for it.

Grabbed Siberian strike for 99. It's pretty good, very 1942-ish. Some 3d glitchiness here and there, but pretty solid and fun. Voice acting is a nice plus.

The iPhone is a weird platform to recommend games for because so often price is a factor. I've played it twice and didn't enjoy the experience either time. I really don't think Underworlds is a good game at all, but for $1 why not try it out?

Well also not to mention taste as always is variable. There are games that I might love that someone else might not like and vice versa.

Really digging some recent purchases:

Peggle (of course)
Sway: Charming visuals and mechanics and sound, flawed due to finnicky touch detection
GeoDefense: Pure addiction TD style gameplay. Loving how each level is a mixture of a puzzle and twitch reflexes.

Not digging so much:

Wolfenstein 3D: This game was way before my time but I bought it on a whim. I totally respect how great a port this is and I'm digging the control scheme, but I think without any nostalgia for this game its hard to like, much less love.

Moron Test: Bought it out of curiosity, its a trial and error self flagellation that I have a sneaking suspicion was made by a b/tard.

Question: Is Touch Grind worth $5? I've definately got my eye on Illusion Labs after playing Sway, but not having any sort of view of whats coming in TG seems like it would limit the fun.

Discussion Question: Does anyone else feel like they give up on iphone games faster than other games? I generally will buy an app for 1-5 dollars and, even if I enjoyed them a ton, forget about them after a couple of days or so. I end up with a pile of games that I havn't played very much and don't go back to very often if ever.

Some exceptions: I played Field Runners and Rolando until I felt I had "completed" both of them and come back whenever there is an update. I also see myself coming back to GeoDefense and Peggle quite a bit. I don't know what it is, but most game just don't seem to "stick" for whatever reason. I think I have a few ideas why.

1. I want to see iphone games with a thoughtful narrative. For example, I love Advance Wars not only for the gameplay but also the charming characters and story. A game like uniwar is completely missing that narrative hook so I don't ever really see myself coming back on that game. Gimme a solid story or narrative hook, and I'll keep coming back. The only game I've played (that I can think of) that has approached this is Galaxy on Fire, but even then it was really shallow.

2. Depth. Depth of content, depth of mechanics, and built for the ground up for the iPhone. Edge and Rolando were both worth playing for extended bouts of time because they were rich with content. So many iPhone games feel shallow in that regard. This might be because apps are so cheap, but that's not a great reason IMO.

3. Presentation. I think this is a problem many gameloft titles have suffered from. While their games are technically sound and have very clean visuals, the actual art direction is extremely bland. Give me real art direction, be creative. Again, I'll point to Rolando and Edge as exceptions.

Still, even with all thsoe things, theres something about playing games on the iphone that keeps them from being particularly memorable or replayable. It might be because I very rarely get to play with the audio ON or the screen at full brightness, it might be because there just aren't that many "AAA" games yet. But I know there hasn't been more than a couple of games that have glued me to my seat for very long.

Certainly entitled to your opinion and on certain parts of your post I agree with and on certain other parts of your post I disagree with.

As I've stated before my DS and my PSP were basically retired by my iphone except for certain games like Chinatown Wars, or RPG's on the DS.

Not saying the DS especially and PSP aren't very good systems but for the most part I'm fine with not paying high prices and getting rid of the some of the fluff within a DS or PSP game that counts for "production value" but is actually just fluff.

I've already played my iphone more than I ever played my psp outside of emulation stuff. The DS is a different case since that is a pretty balanced and tremendous system but as I always say imo the iphone fits into a new market niche that is slightly different than the other handhelds.

Not that there aren't many ways the iphone market shouldn't improve of course or that your personal opinion isn't valid.

And where's Audiosurf?
Audiosurf will be released some time after OS 3.0 is released (so after WWDC, some time after June). It's not really an interesting game if it can't access your iTunes lib, and only OS 3.0 will allow that.

Dylan's stated he was going to work on it, I've seen no word since.

Peggle is awesome indeed. Loved the port, very well done. Glad you can disable the music the FEVER completion track is only funny the first 5 times.

Bejeweled 2
has stolen my life. It's so fantastically produced and bug-free, great attention to the little details (like the landscape view for instance).

Other favorites:

-Tiki Towers: Great 'World of Goo' type clone with a completion/collection twist.
-Edge: Intelligent Cube meets Marble Madness. Perfect.
-Reflexion: New take on the tried and true Ball Breaker formula. I just wish you could swipe both directions :(

The iPod Touch still is the best piece of technology I've ever owned. Even better with every new firmware.

Anyhow guys, see you around. Good to be back, sorry I was such a dick last year I was going through some really tough shit. Learned my lesson, I won't ever backseat mod or freakout like that again I really went overboard.

Hope you all have had some good gaming experiences since we last spoke! :)

You're back!! How long were you banned for?

Welcome back mate. I'm still stuck with my nokia N97 until my contract is up but indeed, the iphone is impressive. Hopefully my contract expires once a new iphone is released

Got my iPhone this weekend.

I haven't been too sure of what to buy gaming wise so far, so took the safe choice of buying Peggle and also along with that Drop7.

These are cool yeh? :lol

I personally don't like Drop7 at all, but it's regarded pretty well around here. :)

Man, I need to start visiting this thread regularly. I didn't even know Resident Evil was out for iPhone until just now... I didn't know about MGS until a couple weeks ago... and had no clue about Crystal Defenders until last month. I'm falling behind, I had no idea my phone had become such a viable gaming platform!

Just trying to decide which version of Crystal Defenders to get now: XBLA has achievements, but iPhone has portability... but I hear the controls aren't very suited to iPhone... though they keep updating the iPhone version. Dunno if the XBLA game has gotten any updates. Definitely no on the 3-part $24 Wii version though :lol

I have a question about game saving on the iPod/iPhone.
After buying so many games on iMachine I am running out of space. I don't want to carry too many unplayed games with me all the time. If I remove it from my iMachine, will I lose all the save on it? Or does the save stay on my iTunes, and if I later sync it again the save will be there intact?

The updates made to Crystal Defender have turned it into a very good game now on iPhone.

Guys, never do business with Armor Games. Do not support them. Do not buy Shift. I'm serious. They emailed me about making games based on my Three Hundred project. They stopped emailing and Shift shows up and their website two months later, with no credit to where the idea originally came from. They are the sleaziest, most immoral people on the internet - and that's saying something.

I just bought Crystal Defenders a few nights ago. The controls are VASTLY improved. It now functions like a normal touch screen game. I'd go with the iPhone version. It's a few dollars cheaper, and there whenever you want it. It also has the most future potential. Remember they can release free content updates for this version if they want to, and if they want to release free content for the XBLA version they have to argue it out with MS first.

Oh and... there is a lite version to try out as well. God, I wish Apple would incorporate demo versions right onto the same page as the main app. One link to download the free one, and another link to download the paid one.

Edge, for some reason, is not in the US store (at least).

That is odd. I just went to check that and see if the price had dropped, as I had enjoyed the Lite version quite a bit, but it is indeed currently absent.

why is it that the guy pimping shift in this thread has an image from your post on mechanic #1?

Description

This is an optical illusion. Depending on how you look at it, it is either a white candle stick against a black background, or two black faces in profile speaking against a white background. It is the perfect illustration of the concept of negative space, or how the space not occupied by an object has a form too, and occasionally its own image.

I completely agree, EDGE is a must-play experience on this platform.

I'm having great fun with underworld right now, it's a very simple diablo in your pocket and also quite tough, but that's what keeps me playing.

Armor games make all those flash games we see around the place right? They have copied tons of ideas before so no surprise here, anything you can do about it btw?

It's not so much that they copied the idea - it's been copied plenty, believe me. It's that the head of Armor Games contacted (through a $5 PayPal donation) to discuss making games for them. After two or three emails back and forth with Daniel McNeely, he stopped emailing me back. That was September 2007. Shift came out in February 2008. I just find the whole thing so distasteful and immoral.

Armor Games isn't the only one to do this either, with the same game concept even. Mtv New Media contacted me to have a sit down (they were disappointed to find out that I didn't live in LA and thus could not do lunch) and I declined. A few months later, Nitrome (owned by Mtv) came out with Yin-Yang. With I complained about it, Jay Is Games threatened to sue ME! Is this like, standard operating procedure or something? Are other indie developers getting screwed like this?

I don't mind that somebody made one of my ideas. In other circumstances, I'd be (and have been) excited. But I just can't recommend anyone give Armor Games money. They are bad for indie developers, bad for the game industry. Leeches who suck the originality and value out of things and will do anything for a quick buck, no matter what bodies they have to step over to get it. Don't support those guys, with Shifty or anything else.

WTF is wrong with Siberian Strike? It has crashed my iPhone the two times I've played it. The second time I had to plug my iPhone into my Mac to reactivate it.

I don't own it but Flashback got an update.

Full Screen Mode
Revised and significantly improved controls
Detailed in-game help
Help overlay for controls
Auto-rotate for left / right landscape (for Touch users)
Restart game

one look at the reviews reveals lots of people are having this problem.

this game needs a patch and a price drop before I plunge

It's 99 cents and for what it's worth its never crashed on me although I'm not saying it won't in the future perhaps.

luckily I haven't had any issues with Siberian Strike. Seems to be working ok for me.

Been playing some demos, nothing really compelling me to buy, other than Ms. PacMan. Controls are a big impediment for me in a lot of games. I'm spoiled by DS controls, I guess.

Here is a worrying post from the forum over at Touch Arcade from a dev. This is related to a game currently in the app store that is a fun port of a flash game but it is hampered by its inability to not have access to your music library and not having a big enough dedicated library of its own at least in the current version. The worrying part indicates that this will not be remedied by 3.0 which a lot of the media covering the iphone scene had immediately jumped to the conclusion that this would indeed be possible. I bolded the important part of his post and posted the bit from the actual page of his app. Very disappointing if true. I know a lot of people were very excited about audiosurf potentially coming but I was more happy that it would open up the possibility of a whole different new genre of games and apps. Apple is missing a killer app if this is true and unless there is such a completely unsolvable technical limitation in the way, this is very annoying.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! It's very much appreciated. My name is Isaac Shepard. I work for Reflexive Entertainment and developed Music Catch. I also wrote the music in the game.

We originally launched Music Catch as a web game around a year ago. It was very well received, even though it contained only one song and didn't have any other features. Around a month or so later we released the PC/Mac download version of Music Catch. Among other things, the download version added the ability to play your own music from your computer.

A few months ago we started the process of creating Music Catch for the iPhone. The original design was to base it off of the original Music Catch web game. While the iPhone version was still being developed, we released Music Catch 2, the next web game version. Music Catch 2 added many features, including more songs, the ability to play any song from a public URL, shape sets, patterns, smoother game play, more power-ups, etc.

Because we still wanted to get Music Catch out on the iPhone sooner than later, we decided to do what we could to add features from Music Catch 2 to the iPhone version. That is why the iPhone version looks more like Music Catch 2 than the original Music Catch. It could really be considered Music Catch 1.5.

That said, Music Catch is now out for the iPhone (with many thanks to Lemon Team who helped port it to the iPhone). A lot of hard work went into making it, and we do feel it is a better version than the original Music Catch web game. Still, we hope to improve upon it and publish game updates and new features. I updated the game details on iTunes to reflect this, but it doesn't look like it has posted yet.

Also, I added a note to the game details on iTunes to explain why we can't use the user's music on the iPhone for the game. Even though the PC/Mac download version can play MP3's on the players computer, Apple didn't make this possible for developers to do... developers don't have access to the actual music data. In the new OS3 coming out, Apple added features to control playing music from the iPhone, but they still don't allow games to analyze the music data. That means that if we want to allow the user to play their own music, we would have to do something more akin to what we are doing already for the Music Catch 2 web game.

Anyway, I just want to say thank you again to everyone here and I hope that you enjoy the game!

Lately the two iPhone games I can't stop playing are Epic Pet Wars and Mafia Wars (although EPW is miles better). MMO phone games are awesome.

Solely in terms of music games I've never actually played one that made playing "with" my music fun. For other apps I'm sure there could be some interesting uses for analyzing audio, but for games it really doesn't bother me that this functionality isn't included. What I'm looking for the most in 3.0 is functionality that allows me to browse my music library and change songs right from inside the game I'm playing.

I guess what that person is saying makes sense from Apple's perspective. If you give access to the files themselves then you're one step away from someone making a "send my music library to another iPhone" app. If the sdk only gives you pointers to all of the songs, and doesn't allow file manipulation then that curbs the music piracy fears. Unfortunate, but understandable. Of course, I don't know if this is how the APIs work in the SDK. I am just guessing based off of what that developer said.

I remember when I first heard the announcement about some of the new APIs in 3.0 and I saw they implemented peer to peer and access to the music library. My first thought was limewire/kazaa/napster, etc... for iPhone. Granted, Apple would never allow those apps into the store, but jailbroken iPhones could benefit from it I'm sure. Looks like this is their way around that as well.

For many people that very game is Audiosurf and I can guarantee you that a portable version of Audiosurf with access to the music library would rock the shit out of the app store sales wise. I would go so far as to say it would be a game worth buying the platform for by itself. Ability to manipulate the music within an app is a good and needed features but an actual ability to use that music to drive data within a game is what I wanted and what I'm guessing a lot of people wanted. It's a freaking ipod. It should be made to do this sort of thing and indeed would be the distinguishing factor for the device imo
