Ok, I bought it and it seems decent (certainly for a buck) after a few levels. One serious suggestion: stick the quick tutorial (the screenshot one) in the first level or make it a one-time forced thing or something. Or paste the 3-finger menu instruction onto the first level. As a long-time and therefore superior and more masculine gamer I just jumped into the game without reading anything, figuring that I could figure out how to play as I went, and while I figured everything out including zoom, using 3 fingers to get the menu (a good idea, don't get me wrong) was not obvious, particularly since the zoom control is 2 fingers.

Star Hogs is on sale for $2.99. Good game imo.

Star Hogs saw a price drop to $2.99 this morning, and IUGO has plans in the
works for two updates, one of which has already been submitted.

We first saw Star Hogs at WWDC, and when we finally got the game in to our hands, it was just as good as we expected.

From our review:

Star Hogs is less of a Worms clone, and more of an evolution of Worms-like turn based combat. The variety of options for ships, 32 single player levels, free play (which is basically just online play but with AI or human opponents sharing the same device), and the potential of online multiplayer makes for a solid title that can easily hold its own amongst the other $4.99 games on the App Store.

Star Hogs Lite is also available, and if you ever enjoyed a Worms game in the past, you owe it to yourself to at least give the free version a try.

Only now, instead of $4.99, Star Hogs is $2.99. The update which has already been submitted to the App Store addresses some online game balance issues and fixes a few bugs. The next update coming down the pipes features improved graphics, in-game messaging for multiplayer battles, and an optional purchasable map pack which will bring 32 new campaign levels.

IUGO's Sarah Thomson has been extremely active in the Star Hogs thread on our forums and is collecting community feedback for future updates. So if you have comments, questions, or other ideas for Star Hogs, don't hesitate to post them

This PR was released earlier today:

DotEmu, publisher specialized in bringing retro games to life, is proud to announce is partnership with D4 Enterprise for the release of the famous late 80's adventure title Golvellius: Valley of Doom. The game will be available worldwide as soon as August 2009 for iPhone and iPod Touch.

"Golvellius is a wonderful addition to our license portfolio and we are pleased to bring Golvellius to the iPhone and iPod Touch for a great retrogaming experience," said Xavier Liard, co-founder and CEO of DotEmu.

Originally published in 1987 by Compile Golvellius: Valley of Doom was the Sega Master System’s answer to The Legend of Zelda for being one of the best adventure games of the console. Back then, it was recognized for its magnificent graphics and its deep story. Most anticipated retro game of this summer; Golvellius on iPhone benefits from a great attention on the control schemes, the ability to play it on full screen and a smart saving functionality.

The evil king Golvellius is terrorizing the valley with his army. It is up to the brave knight to save the day! Slay the enemies and use the gold to get powerful weapons, equipments and enchanted items.

Son of a BITCH! 13,843 point round going in WordFu, still 2:25 left on the clock, about to get a score bonus tile and a freeze tile and the fucking ting freezes on me. That 45 second starting timer had taken me over an hour of work to get to that point....

Wait..

Wait...

Wait........

This has got to be some sort of dream? Holy shit. I LOVED Golvellius for the Sega Master System. I was so addicted to the game yet it was so hard.

OMFG I can't wait.

Now they need to redo Lord of the Sword and I will be SET!

So I'm still a bit unclear how this implementation of controls works for monkey island.

I understand you don't point and click. But do you drag the pointer aroun under your finger or is the screen like a virtual touchpad that you hve to use multiple swipes to arbitrarily move the pointer?

I don't have a pc so is this version still passable to play? I neve playe the original but I loved curse o monkey island (more than grim fandango). I liked day if the tentacle but nit so much the 4th monkey island game.

Some of the reasoning in that IGN Monkey Island review is seriously dumb. I've played the game for quite some time now, and there's nothing wrong with the interface. You have direct touch access where it makes the most sense, and navigating the cursor like with a touchpad is a matter of minutes to get used to.

I just listened to todays Kojima Report, and they said starting today there would be a three day sale on Metal Gear Touch for $2.99 (US). So far, it looks like that hasn't happened in the app store, but I guess it will at some point today.

Virtual touchpad. It could have probably been better if you could adjust how quickly the cursor moves, but you can't. IMO it breaks it (agreeing with the IGN review completely) but there are others who are willing to forgive such an implementation.

Hopefully a mainstream review that agrees with my bitchiness prompts the guys who ported it to develop a patch :)

You drag your finger anywhere on the screen and it moves the pointer around. you can also double tap anywhere on screen as long as the pointer is on a object you can interact with to open, push, talk etc. It takes 5 minutes to get adjusted.

What they should have done is make a little arrow right above where your finger is placed, that way you never have excess dragging and your finger wouldn't be in the way.

The interface of Monkey Island sucks monkey ass, but it is all so great fun that I couldn't care less actually.

Even of the small iPhone screen it just looks as atmosphericly lovely as the version on the bigger machines, like the PC and the Xbox.

It's a must-buy if you haven't bought it on other systems and you're often on the road, like me.

So how does SCUMMVM on jailbroken iPhones deal with original Monkey Island's resolution?

It was 320x240 iirc and that would mean it'd be pretty small on the iPhone's 480x320 screen. Does it have better scaling algorithms in place than what the official iPhone release uses?

Here is a game I'm finally happy to be able to pimp with a clear conscience. Circuit Strike One.

It's a game that I really liked but that was legimately hard to recommend outside of a very niche group because of some real concerns.

But the last two updates have just been awesome and the game imo is easily recommendable now for the great price of 99 cents. I love when a dev improves his product to take it to a true finished state when it didn't originally start out that way. So few apps actually do it and I always try to applaud the guys who do.

The last update.

1. Preload Data.Core – Fix framerate drop when the last Shield Generator is destroyed
2. Preload Player Ship on level start – Fix framerate drop when spawning the first time
3. Data.Core Health Bar – Brighter so you can see the remaining health on hit
4. New Data.Core Explosion – Fix framerate drop and eliminate some bugs on next level after memory is not freed
5. Player Ship brighter – Improved the contrast for visibility
6. Slow Turret Bullet Speeds on Higher Levels – Improve frame rates
7. Max Shield Generators set to 6 from 8 – Improve frame rates
8. Add Bonus points for Skill Level – Solve Leaderboard “Rank up” issue
9. Cleaned up a Null Object Leak
10. Add “Slow Motion” title for Hypercube Hit, Teleport and multi-explosion
11. Add Physics Update Selection – Fix problem where 1G touch was trying to update like the 2G
12. Add VFX Selection High Med + Low – Allow players to turn off visual effects if they are having frame rate issues
13. Turned off N00b bullets (big collision area) after level 3 one Easy
14. Hopefully killed the double ship Error
15. No accidental double tap in achievements and high score menus
16. New Data.Core Hit effect – Fix lag from particle effects and instantiation
17. Fixed XP calculations
18. Faster Controller Polling – Improve input response time
19. Bullet.Time Pause – Fix bug where game would not pause

Today's update.

1.) Dual Stick Controller
2.) New Ship Designs - One for each control method
3.) Enemy Spawn Markers
4.) Pause Button moved out of the way to the top right
5.) Additional Bug Fixes
6.) Open GL Performance Optimizations - Built on Unity Beta4
7.) Display scoring multiplier up to 20x
8.) In App Email - Get your friends on board
9.) iPod playlist selection - Play CS.One to your own music

Circuit Strike One. A brutally difficult shooter that isn't for everybody but if you like a challenge and can adjust to the movement system (which trades in the usual geometry wars approach for something more akin to Asteroids) there is a good game underneath.

There's an update for cso? Thanks for the heads up...this is a really awesome game. In a world of geometry war clones, it's great to have a really different shooter with such a cool look and theme. I just wish there was more to do and that it had missions, etc, rather than being "how long can you last!" as these type of games get boring after a while.

edit: Conflicted. On one hand, the dual control sticks make the game so much easier to control, on the other hand it directly contradicts what I already said made cso cool, that it wasn't trying to be Geometry Wars. Still a cool game, but this control scheme takes away all of it's original asteroids charm.

Uniwar also got a nice update and is another game that continues to improve.

Today's Update.

Bug Fixes

1.) Bug Fix. Fixed the black screen issue from 1.03 that occured with lots of saved data.
2.) Fixed exploit that could allow a player to move twice and steal an enemy base on some maps.

New Features for online play

1.) Registered players can retrieve their forgotten passwords by confirming their name and email address from the login screen.
2.) Map Preview before joining a game.
3.) New in game button: War Report now always accessible.
4.) New in game button: View Replay dedicated button.
5.) New icon to indicate Rated games in the join a game screen.
6) New setting option to lock the screen orientation to portrait or landscape (bed players)
7.) Expanded email notifications allows players the option to receive notifications of turn while online and to receive notification of turn while online and to receive these notifications for games with a specified minimum turn duration.
8.) Expanded Availability Account Settings allow players to appear available to all players, only friends, or no one. Added choice of availability to random games.

Coming Soon next in v1.05. Push notifications and several other improvements.

Just got screens and news of the next iPhone game from Chillingo... it's about two weeks away from submission to Apple apparently

Whilst doodling away, half dazed from the boring lecture I was in, I thought I saw the image move. The Martians I was drawing were invading my notepad! I had to do something to stop them. Pen in hand, I drew a hero to fight them off. Bold, brave, no fear of death, the story unfolded before my eyes...

The Earth was in peril... again!

The task of saving the day falls at the feet of Generic Marine (G to his friends).
As the Martian horde invades, G must battle his way from his lunar base on the Moon back to Earth, to wipe the Martian menace from our streets and restore the human race.
It won't be an easy task but G has an arsenal of 15 deadly weapons to hand. Join him and shoot, splat, and blast your way through 30 levels over 3 unique locations, to victory!

Manage ammo, three weapon types, health and boost (jet pack). Collect Martian rocks and meteors to earn cash and upgrade weapons - there is always a new way to purge the Martian Invaders just around the corner! Single shot weapons, multi-shot weapons, beam weapons, and rocket launchers to send them to oblivion.

Easy to learn, addictive to play, saving the Earth from the Martians has never been so much fun!

Features:
Stunning graphics with comedy visceral deaths
Story mode, 30 levels over 3 unique locations
Endurance mode, play as long as you can!
Easy, normal, hard play modes.
Bespoke sound track, designed to kick butt too!
Listen to your iPod music while you play

TBC
+ Achievements to unlock
+ Control your iPod music from within the game
+ OpenFeint support for online high scores and achievements

Requirements:
Compatible with all iPhone and iPod touches
Requires iPhone OS 2.1 or later.

Options are never a bad thing. I was fine with the old control system but there are lots of Geometry Wars players who inhabit the shooting space nowadays that are use to dual stick control. It doesn't really effect me that people can play the way they want. (Although separate leaderboards for the control methods would be a good idea) This reminds me of the whole Fight Night stick versus buttons debate. I'm generally pro options in most cases especially if there is a legit large demand for it. The only problem to me is that he hasn't done the best implementation of dual stick because the dual sticks are fixed instead of re-centering. But hopefully he will fix that in a later update because that has sort of become mandatory for me to enjoy dual stick controls on the iphone.

Looks neat although a pretty shameless Zombieville clone which has become its own genre.

There are about 5 of them now with Mummy's Revenge. Sparta, etc.

Hopefully its good and adds something to the formula.

Pipe Mania is now on sale for $0.99

(til Sunday only)

App Shopper link for Pipe Mania.

Pipe Mania Lite.

edit: App Shopper doesn't show the reduced price, but it does come up for 0.99 on my phone.

Game is great, played it on the bus this morning.

The game was to also come to XBLA but the original publishers (Empire) closed down. This appears to be exactly the same as the PSP and DS game.

While the game begins with puzzle mode, you can unlock classic and arcade mode instantly by checking the treasure chests in the "extra" menu.

Hero of Sparta is like Zombieville?

Unless there is another thing called Sparta but I found them completely different.. Just the 3d aspect of Sparta makes it completly different.

Though this Chillingo game looks identical to Zombieville USA

Yeah, I see your point. Options don't hurt, I just don't like how they dualstick controls change the game so much and now people are going to know CSO as a geometry wars clone rather than the cool, more distinct and challenging game is originally was. But at the end of the day it's awesome so people can play it however they want to as long as they play it.

CS.One is my favorite shooter on iphone.

Dual-sticks is meh, but whatever, I have yet to try it.

I am also loving Pinball Fantasies. Sooooo addictive and good.

Even though Western Pinball looks better, Fantasies just has more interesting mechanics going on with their tables.

iPhone gaming is just a beast.

Purchased this since its super cheap, will give impressions. Oh and btw Zenonia is AMAZING!!!!!

I think this thread has cost me more money than all the other game recommendation threads on GAF. Small priced games over and over will sneak up on you.

I was a recipient of a sonrisu free code to try out Zep's Dreamland. I like it! It's a neat little platform-puzzler. The art style reminds me of the Go! Go! Beckham GBA game (I'll take a port of that, too). Some of the puzzles have been tricky, and the mechanics of moving Zep around are interesting. I think the three-finger pause and two-finger zoom is very clever. I'm all for supporting GAF developers and think anyone's $.99 will be well spent.

I figured so many people were recommending Edge (NZ), I 'd ask again:

So I just bought this, and while I really enjoy the atmosphere and design (actually, I downloaded the soundtrack and that convinced me to buy it), but I'm not feeling the controls. What control schemes do people use?

Used to use the drag default but switched to the X-pad and I liked it better. Works fine imo.

It figures Monkey Island would be released in the App Store two days after I bought it on XBLA. Double dip, here we come.

same. the drag system is murder for getting "edge time" hangs. d-pad is much better for those levels.

I did the same. If it was any sort of action game I would double dip but I can't for an adventure game :(

I will buy the others if they bring them to the iphone though. I haven't played most of them since they were new games.

I just can't get myself to buy Monkey Island. I could maybe stand to play an adventure game in this day and age on a PC and maybe a console. On a phone, I just don't think I'll ever feel the urge to boot up a point-and-click adventure.

I can't say enough good things about Pinball Fantasies. It's so good. Peggle? Feh. Pinball > Pachinko.
