The always awesome Galcon got another update which brings it up to a ridiculous 1.7 version. One on the best games on the idevice and one of the best updated games ever on the platform. This game was originally released back in August/September of last year to put things in perspective.

Update notes from the text

-Awesome new graphics and menus for a visual experience second to none.
-Added in game settings menus.
-Left Handed mode.
-Easier access to multi-player games
-Added friends feature allows in game friending
-Instance access to community, including ranks, forums, and chat room.
-Upgraded in game controls.

Awesome, can't figure out the friend list though.. How do you know if they are online?

I tried to buy Bookworm the other day and it kept saying it was being updated... just meant the price was being raised back apparently. :( Is there a site that lists all the sales for iPhone games? I just bought California Gold Rush and love it.

I'm actually surprised at the lack of the plushed furry vitriol (Not that I think it would be justified).

On another note I picked up the 360 version of civ rev after playing the iphone one, and I might actually like the iphone one better. The simplistic graphics actually make it easier to see whats going on.

No but I'm guessing it's coming going by the timing of Sega's little "tell us what you want" thing a while back.

Man I hope you're right. Would be a nice change of pace after the first Sonic on iPhone appearance.

wolfenstein rpg looks interesting. Is there an app out there that gives updates to game app sales?

BargainBin does that quite nicely, you can check price changes by day for each category of app. It also has a watch list complete with push notifications.

I'm mad I missed out on the CivRev sale. I downloaded the lite version and it was really slow and laggy. Has these been the experience for anyone else?

Mevo and the Grooveriders really is free now, they just started the 24hr free giveaway for it. Maybe they decided to make a few changes before doing the 'free sale,' which is why some of us couldn't download it when it briefly showed up as free yesterday? Anyways, I just downloaded it for free with no problems.

Thanks for the heads-up, checking it out now.

What I said before about Mevo being free is now the opposite!

The search for it comes up as free but on the app page itself it says 59p. Before it was the other way around. It's confusing me

Mevo and the Grooveriders...

I tried to get it again today and although everything now says "Free" I can't install it. Still waiting.

It did give me a message saying I had already purchased it but failed to download and install it. I'm going to be pretty pissed at the game and developer if this ends up charging me 59p whilst being unable to download.

Still waiting, its not going to install is it.

Ok can anyone tell me how to beat the boss in Rolando 2? I took out the two things on the side and now I don't know what to do. I can#t get up to the bombs.

get the gassy rolandoo to eat on o the chillies and float up the platform at the top. then you can shoot bombs.

Vending Machine Champ is hilarious; maybe it's just me, but it feels a lot harder than the PC version, even with multitouch :lol

I've got to find a reason why there's a punch attack in Wolf RPG. Against the melee enemies, I use the kick because it knocks them back and saves you from being attacked for a turn; but the punch? Can't even hit objects with it either.
Well, except the paintings and flags. Great game, nonetheless.

For those having some crash or performances issues with Civ Rev.

Civilization Revolution Update Coming
2K is crafting an update for the popular game.
by Levi Buchanan

US, August 12, 2009 - Having problems with Civilization Revolution on your iPhone? Not all players are, but there are many that report crashes and general instability with the download -- myself included. 2K Games released a statement today about the issue and iterated that an update for the game is forthcoming. Not only will the update address stability, but it will also improve the autosave system that can cost players hours of play if they receive a phone call or crash out of the game.

Here is the 2K statement:

"We are aware that a limited number of users are experiencing the same crash and performance issues that you noted in your review. Through our extensive testing, we've found the source of these issues and will be distributing an update as soon as possible to address these concerns. Additionally, as giant Civ fans ourselves, we are constantly monitoring Web sites and forums for suggestions that will improve our game. As a result, we are retuning the autosave system so that players will not lose any progress in the event that their experience is interrupted or they inadvertently exit the game."

IGN will let you know as soon as the update for Civilization Revolution becomes available.

It knocks the heads off the skeletons and takes a huge chunk of their health.

Wolfenstein RPG Review
Take turns killing Nazi thugs in this iPhone adventure.
by Levi Buchanan

August 12, 2009 - So, you've finished tearing up all the Nazi thugs in Wolfenstein 3D Classic, but still have a few rounds left in the clip? Then give Wolfenstein RPG a download to revisit the castle through an entirely different lens. Expertly updated from traditional mobile to the iPhone by developer Firemint, Wolfenstein RPG is a clever, involving adventure-oriented riff on the classic PC shooter that's graced with good graphics and easy-to-use controls.

You are ace soldier BJ Blazkowcisz, freshly broken out of confinement in an Axis stronghold. You must fight your way to Castle Wolfenstein and put a stop to an occult weapons program. Between here and there are hundreds of enemy soldiers and monsters. Fortunately, you have a wicked right cross, boots of steel, and access to lots of guns. Plus, Axis scientists working on gene-enhancing formulas have left their work everywhere. You can fill syringes with chemical compounds that increase everything from your focus to health and use these temporary boosts to get out of hairy situations.

If you've started sprouting a few gray hairs, then you will be somewhat familiar with the pacing of Wolfenstein RPG. Despite a HUD that looks otherwise, this is not a first-person shooter. This is a classic-style adventure-RPG. The game imagines a grid over each maze-like stage. Every step you take registers as a turn. When an enemy approaches, each attack you unleash counts as a turn. The enemy's response, whether they return fire or step aside, counts as its turn. Battles have a rhythm to them as you step, shoot, dodge, and heal. When you get the pacing of this system, you can use it to your advantage, knowing when to retreat two or three squares and let an enemy come to you so you can kick it back and then empty a clip into it as it tries to recover and counter-attack.

This system is not for everybody. Some folks will see the grid movement and the turn-based exchanges as creaky holdovers from a gaming history buried by the likes of Halo. That's okay. By all means, give a download to Duke Nukem 3D and ventilate some aliens over there.

Wolfenstein RPG's controls take just a few minutes to learn. You have an on-screen movement pad that advances BJ through the stages. There are a handful of options, but I preferred the classic d-pad. Since I am right-handed, I placed it on the right side of the screen. It felt instantly natural. Tapping forward advances you a square. Taping left or right turns, but does not move forward. (Swiveling BJ does not take up a turn.) To strafe, you swipe left or right on the screen. The rest of the interface is touch-sensitive, such as tapping the current weapon to change it or tapping the health meter to dig into your inventory of health items and special syringes. To fire at an enemy, you simply tap them. Be warned, though. That enemy must be in front of you. You cannot just see it in an adjacent square and then tap to shoot it. Once you have a sniper rifle, though, you do use tilt to aim.

There really is a lot going on in Wolfenstein RPG. There are secrets in every stage, from hidden treasure rooms to medals earned for doing auxiliary tasks, such as reading all of the books in a stage (although reading some will cause you to lose focus for several turns). Almost everything is interactive, from the ability to rip a sink off a wall and throw it at a jackboot or kick down a flag to see if there is a secret behind it. In fact, you want to interact with as much as possible because it's an easy way to earn experience points and level up BJ.

Wolfenstein RPG has a good sense of humor. The game jettisons all references to the Nazis and goes with a generic Axis enemy, likely to save any consternation with regional sensitivities. But then it puts up portraits of Hitler everywhere, moving that infamous moustache down to his bottom lip. Hitler with a soul patch, folks. Before kicking down a portrait, be sure to punch it and watch soul patch Hitler reel from your barrage of blows. The text and dialog is cheeky. And there are chickens everywhere that demand to be kicked.

(By the way, kicking chickens is actually one of two minigames in Wolfenstein RPG. The other is a fast-paced round of War, the playing card game. They are not necessary to the package, but nice touches nonetheless.)

I also really like the art direction Firemint used in updating Wolfenstein RPG for the iPhone. The game is more cartoon-y than the mobile game, which played things much straighter. The enemy sprites are large and detailed. They have very limited animation, though. The 3D is also very smooth. As you move through the mazes, tombs, labs, and castle chambers, everything scrolls with nary a hiccup. This is a very, very polished production. The audio is also good, with strong sound effects and occasional blasts of voice, such as the dying cry "mein leibe!" as a jackboot crumples to the ground.

Wolfenstein RPG was reviewed with version 1.0.

Closing Comments
If you have the right expectations -- mainly, you are ready for a classic turn-based adventure straight outta 1987 -- Wolfenstein RPG will entertain the hell out of you. I enjoyed the game on traditional mobile, but this iPhone update improves on every aspect of the original. The controls are better. There are more secrets. The art style is superior. You will get six or seven hours of play out of this game, and that's if you just press through it without looking for all of the goodies or experiment with the syringe boosters. I had a great time with Wolfenstein RPG and heartily recommend it.

The app store reviews are really good too... I wonder if it actually is a good game.

the good reviews says either, i played for 15 minutes, or look like they are from a marketing team. or, just, i've been waiting for this game, its out, score 5. so i'm not sure, what about game site reviews, those might be more trustworthy at this point.

It's only good for 4 days and has ads, too!
It's a damn shame too, because up to this point the iphone apps for PGA majors have been shining examples of successful event promotion. To compare, the MLB ap was $10, have audio for 162 days (not sure of playoffs) averaging 12 games per day and now features 2-3 live video feeds (every video feed if you are an MLB.TV sub) and has ZERO ads. That is a fantastic package.

4 days of golf is somehow worth 20% of that? Are you kidding me?

"Ridiculous" 1.7?

Galcon is pretty neat. It was my first major purchase on my iPod Touch. This is a very welcomed update. So what do teh colours do in the settings? I though t it would have an effect on teh player colours, but they don't seem to...

I haven't played it in a bit, but if I'm not mistaken, the colors dictate the difficulty. When you change the color, the ranking goes up.

Just grabbed it too. I dunno... don't think I would pay for this game... The music is kinda ... weird, and the characters and animations and backgrounds are kinda naff. It's an interesting concept though. I like the concept at least.

Mevo is short, but nice... the PC version on Steam is the real deal (but was too expensive)... if you like music games, then I would recommend it

Btw: is it allowed to giveaway iphone promo codes here on GAF? I a am going to release a game about Beethoven sooner than later... and I could use some feedback

cheers,

Yeah, at least a few devs have done it here. IMO you should avoid posting the codes directly in the thread so the lurkers don't grab them up.

So playing through Wolfenstein RPG a bit more (around the 4th or 5th area). Man, it's really boring. There's a bit of charm to it, but with no real sense of challenge or interaction, it actually just feels like I am blindly tapping the screen for no real purpose.

And for some reason, the d-pad has started to go janky on me - right is getting harder to press for some reason (and I don't think it's my touch screen). Maybe it's just my disposition today, but for some reason I keep missing right. This built to a bit of frustration.

I like the style, and little touches (such as teh d-pad tilting), and the sniper is kinda neat, but the game just feels lifeless to me. tap, tap, tap. Shoot, shoot, heal, shoot, tap. There;s no strategy, nor any sense of exploration or achievement.

Then again, I really couldn't stand RPGs on consoles either.

I also downloaded Mevo, had a go until I finished the 5 main songs and deleted it. It's novel, but not much to it.

Man, I'm tired. A bit frustrated too.

Ugh...I would buy so many more games if Apple removed the 10MB download limit. Ridiculous.

I need app recommendations under 10MB so I can pass away the time at work! Halp!
