Edit: I'll probably update anyway - dunno why, I thought I'd rather be up-to-date. I do use the memory feature a bit, but always felt like it was doing something nasty. Sometimes it did weird things to music that was playing, other times it would crash the phone.
I believe it does what any other app would do that needs memory...take up memory. Then the OS forces certain apps to shut down (like Safari, and possibly the iPod app in your case) to free up whatever amount. If it causes issues then maybe it's just being too aggressive in allocating memory.

I guess the difference with using the app and letting a game do it by itself is that you kill the processes before whatever game vs it happening while the game is open (which may cause choppiness?).

Where's our Alive 4 Ever impressions Stoney??? :D

It's pretty neat although I'd like to see a control update. It's workable now currently but I think the control pads are a bit too big and they are fixed so you can't move around your fingers like in Isotope, Minigore, or Dropship, all of which sort of set the standard imo of how you do dual analog control on the iphone.

I'll post some better impressions later in the evening ;)

I really recommend this to anyone who enjoys platformers, especially at this price.

I downloaded this last night. I feel like the game itself could use some work, especially in the controls, but it's pretty awesome to play online deathmatch games on your phone.

What do you think should be changed? I think it controls well except for the fact that you either (1)shoot everytime you navigate and can't lift your thumb or else your weapon will fire, which sucks if you're charging the laser beam or holding a rocket which is just 1 per pick up or (2)have to double tap to begin shooting, which doesnt feel fast enough.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I just stick with the first option. It's made for some annoying times (the laser beam can only be charged for a few seconds before it has to fire no matter what), so simply moving around can make it self deploy a second before you got into range, stuff like that.

However for controlling the mechs I think the controls are pretty good, standard dual stick procedure. The boosts would be cooler if it wasn't a dash in a straight line, though. The gameplay is very enjoyable, especially when its a packed game and you happen to find all the rockets.

A huge part of it could just be needing to get used to it, but (like you said) kind of sucks that if you want to turn around with rockets or lasers equipped, you have to prime them and be ready to fire in a few seconds. My other problem is the whole double tapping to dash thing, which is kind of tough to pull off sometimes. I don't think the controls are horrible, just a little clumsy.

Yeah I've definitely had some times where I wanted to dash and couldn't pull it off when I do have energy left and had to try again or got wrecked for it. I'm not sure how, but the controls could use some tweaking and the arena could use some more personality but other than that, I have fun with it. Surprised how much IGN loved it, though.

While I think he does in general a good job of iphone coverage some of his reviews in general can be a bit odd. Most of the other reviews of iMech have been more middle of road. They like the ideas of it but they have a lot of issues with it.

I still remember his review of Duke Nukem which didn't really stress how fundamentally broken the controls were.

Possibly true. Regardless, it interfered with system operation, so it's no wonder Apple shut it down.

Anyway, I updated. The process list is nifty. I kind of used free memory, but to be honest, memory management got a lot better in 3.0 for me. I only used it because I couldn't reboot, but 3.0.1 seemed to have fixed that problem.

On that note, does anyone know if you can have two versions of the same app installed? Like by changing the file name, and dragging it back into iTunes? Is that how you install an older version anyway?

Any word on Word Ace? I've been reading up on the Palm Pre release of this game and I can't wait for the iPhone version to hit.

Who's all planning on picking this one up? There might enough interest in this for an official thread / list of GAF players.

I hope there's enough interest for a list of GAF players. While the friend code isn't the most ideal way to find friends, our two choices basically boiled down to unique handles, or friend codes, and in this case, being able to play against "Fred" instead of "fr3dm4st3r69" seemed like the better way to go. There's also another reason for the codes, but that'll be ... later. :)

In terms of when, I've got my fingers crossed for "soon," but beyond that, it's out of our hands. It's been in submission, rejected once, and resubmitted over the last three weeks. So... yeah. Hopefully soon.

I bought Rise of Lost Empire or whatever, and Castle of Magic both for .99 last night.

Also picked up Alive-4-Ever. Best iphone shooter ever. I love it.

So much content on my phone. Almost no time to play them all.

couple of konami games just got dropped to 59p.

Power Pro Baseball and silent scope

any impressions please?

I would not recommend Silent Scope to even the most diehard fan of the original arcade version.

So, how does DRM work on paid for games/apps on the iDevices? I'm probably going to pick up a 3G Touch but plan on keeping my 2G Touch. Will I be able to use my apps on both or will I have to tie them to one or the other?

They're tied to your iTunes account. So long as your desktop is activated for that account, you're good.

You guys oughta play UniWar, the BEST strategy game on the iphone:
www.uniwar.com

I've been hooked on this game since my purchase back in April.

It's out? I don't have it available to update. :(

Says version 3.0 on the app store. You can get it there to prompt the update.

Half-beaten. You don't have to delete it first. Just start re-downloading it.

I didn't. Updated like normal, and it works fine. I like it a lot.

Updated Facebook interface is win. I was getting so tired of the scrolling stuff at the top, and it was getting really slow to update for the past couple weeks.

Shortcuts to friend's pages is pretty sweet indeed.

Speaking of announced games that haven't come out yet, wheres Pac Man CE? (yeah I know controls aren't ideal but I still want it). That and Unify are the ones I'm waiting for.

Any news on the Sonic CD port guys?

Last I heard was that the guy was meeting up with Sega.
Remember the Sega blog post asking for iPhone port suggestions? Sega heard from that guy before they did that. I would guess from the timing that they were planning to go through with Sonic CD with that guy the whole time, one of those "hey look we listen to our fans!" things (which Capcom has done a few times before).

what makes silent scope so bad?
Framerate is what killed it for me, I don't know how good/bad it runs on 3GS though. I played the DC and GBA ones and enjoyed those so I'm probably a bit weird, but just saying if the performance was good I'd probably have enjoyed it on the iPhone as well.

Power Pros on the other hand is nice, well worth the full price even.

Why are there two different version of Alive 4-ever? One was submitted a day later, same price, size, and all... but has an EX appended to its name.

Wow, I took some survey posted on slickdeals last night for a $10 itunes giftcard and didn't think I'd actually get anything, but it just showed up in my inbox. :D

http://definetheshift.com/ go there, sign up, take the survey. it literally takes like 2 minutes. then you can email them (definetheshift@gmail.com) with the username you signed up with to speed the process up.

then buy Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor if you don't have it already.

Thanks. I tried it out this morning, now waiting for the $10.

Alive 4 ever is realy cool, the co-op makes it, seems like there are basically 30 co-op missions since you get additional tasks to do.

annoyed at how hard it is to work out where you are in the environment though, needs a map or more distinguishable landmarks, or a zoom out feature.

Yeah, I've been playing it for months too. The game has issues, but I love the mechanic. It's great to have turns waiting for me whenever I have a couple minutes to spare.

Took it as well, but I do live in the US. I think I'll hold off on e-mailing them to speed it up for a day. If I don't see anything on Saturday morning I'll shoot them one. No reason to pressure them :p.

Will be nice if it works. There's a couple of games I don't own that I otherwise wouldn't get (Civ Rev & Oregon Trail). Own just about anything else in this thread that interests me (7 pages of apps from this thread alone).
