I believe it does what any other app would do that needs memory...take up memory. Then the OS forces certain apps to shut down (like Safari, and possibly the iPod app in your case) to free up whatever amount. I guess the difference with using the app and letting a game do it by itself is that you kill the processes before whatever game vs it happening while the game is open (which may cause choppiness?).
