Yeah I should really leave it plugged in. But I shouldnt NEED to at this early stage in its life.

FWIW I actually did have push turned on. (thats where it automatically checks for new mail every certain amount of time right?) Thing is though it never seemed to do that. I only got new mail when I manually checked.

Anyway, its off now.

Also I fixed the apps with a method I found on the official forums. Delete a free app, then redownload it. After that all apps suddenly work fine.

Incidentially, if that didnt work, could I just restore from iTunes and all my paid apps would work? I know its says 'backing up iphone' when I use iTUnes, but when I check the apps in my itunes UI I dont see any of the ones I bought.

ahhh. Good times.

I'm not sure about the apps, but yes, leave it plugged in at night. It does no damage whatsoever and you start the day with a 100% battery. Push was draining your battery over night.

Due to the free in app purchase news, Polyghost is now free. Please get this and show your love for friendswithyou <3

we may be running a friends with you contest with the app, so go get and enjoy ^_^

Also due to a new pitch for some ads we now have to work on, the planned app that I was going to lead development on has been delayed hopefully no more than a week

This will change the App Store economy quite a bit. I like it.

Well, not the economy - the way apps are purchased, I mean. I love the whole being able to turn a demo into the full game thing. That's how it should be - not have to deal with two separate versions.

It could also turn into a disaster imo.

I don't want any bait and switch tactics where devs advertise a free game and when you download it every level is an in-app purchase or whatever.

And where would you list a game like that on the Top Free/Top Paid lists? What section would it go under? etc etc

That's the exact reason Apple didn't allow it before - they didn't want bait-and-switch situations. So maybe they are going to put some restriction on that...

Is this really a big deal? Worst case scenario is you tried out a free demo and you delete it.

That's annoying though. If people start getting "tricked" into downloading this stuff and then being nickel and dimed after they launch the game, its just going to frustrate them into not using the App Store at all.

I'm not against this functionality but it needs to be made clear to the users beforehand.

This game looks pretty good.

Ok if anyone can put me out of my misery I would be eternally grateful.

Ive only had the iPhone for around 2 weeks, and all of a sudden the battery now completely drains over night. It will be basically fully charged then I wake up and its powered down because of a low batt.

Would this be caused by any games or anything? Is it possible I left a game in stand by mode or something?

Which brings me to me next problem...

I cant even check the game because now of my apps will boot up. Ill select one and it starts to load then quits back to the main iPhone screen.

Anyone know what the fuck is going on? Do I have to delete and re-install all my apps? And can I redownload the ones I paid for for free?
All I can think is that maybe some app is running and doing something when it should be either not open at all (like a game or whatever other app) or idling (like the Phone/Messages/Mail processes). I have everything possible on, push, bluetooth, 3G, GPS, etc, unless you're getting constant mails the battery should be fine. Does the phone feel warm/hot by any chance? That would be indicative of an app running and chewing up the CPU and consequently battery. Do you leave an app open (like a clock or alarm app) or just the home screen when you go to sleep?

You could try backing up then restoring to see if something funky is going on with the OS. Everything should be back after the restore...although if you have photos you may want to back those up separately just in case.

Goes under free. Devs that use bait and switch will probably get a bunch of 1 star reviews bitching about it. Of course devs that use it as an actual demo method will probably get bitten too so it'll be interesting to see how that all pans out. Like if you already have a paid app with decent reviews do you want to risk that by making it into a demo-unlock version?
RelentlessRolento said:
Well that's basically the demo...

The game serves as a Lite version for the game, but the Full game remains available for $5.99 [App Store]. Curiously, the cost of the Lite + all add-on packs comes to only $4.96, so even if you are interested in buying the full game, the in-app purchasing is the cheaper way to go.

hmm
...but yeah the pricing is curious. Was the demo 99 cents w/DLC before?

Does it belong under "Free" though? That's debatable imo. You're basically just downloading a game launcher (maybe with a tutorial level) and then buying the actual game within the app. It's still very much a Paid app, you're just purchasing it in a different way.

The more I think about this, the worse it sounds. It's just going to cause confusion for the end user and will most likely be abused by developers.

It might help reduce the amount of 'lite' games out there. Actually have a demo within a full version that can be unlocked with an in-app purchase, ala XBLA.
On the one hand, we're going to see "free" apps where you basically can't do anything without paying, which is going to suck. On the other hand, it should rid us of that "iMob XY respect points" spam/clutter/crap.

Plus the apps pulling a bait&switch where the bait isn't interesting enough will probably see very, very bad ratings very, very fast (much worse than the current state of free apps rating, which tends to be terrible)

Okay, a little help. I saw some dude playing something on the train, 3/4 overhead view, area he was playing in had a gold floor with a red carpet setting, thumbstick controls on the left and something like spells on the other side, five buttons; looked like RPG elements? He would move around and it looked like a glowy thing was following him around. His attacks seemed very glowy/energy based.

Any ideas what it was?

Reposting in sad desperation.

:(

This isn't just about games, though, and it isn't fair to throw the baby out with the bath water.

A kindle app with in app book purchases is just one example of a legitimate use for this. Will some devs abuse it? Sure. Does that mean every legitimate dev should suffer?

honestly, i don't even think there will be too much abuse. for games, this is a pretty simple concept. it's the shareware model. free version with one level. pay up for the rest.

people are familiar with this, aren't they? it's been around for ages.

the biggest impact this has on the app store (as it's implemented now) is the complete breakdown of the top 50 paid vs. top 50 free games.

if almost every publisher makes their game a free demo with in app purchases for the full game then the "free" listing has paid games with demos and the paid listing has... what? games that refuse to have demos available.

it's going to be lopsided with almost all content on the "free" side and all the legit free games being pushed around.

maybe apple will change things around and have a top 50 demos list or something similar.

obviously, all these pro/con discussions took place within Apple as they launched the in-app purchases with that initial restriction. someone there made the decision to switch things around.

I'm content to see how this plays out. I'm not too worried

Mafia Wars is out (the game that started life on Facebook). Worth a look, I reckon it could be quite addictive. It has push and email features. £Free.

Just gave it a shot, never played on Facebook. When I go to Fight am I actually fighting someone else or is it just a in-game character?

I like what ngmoco are doing with some of their games, Rloando 2 now has a chapter 1 freebie on the store but you can buy each chapter for 59p / 99c as you go along. I like that kind of stuff as long as it matches the final price of the game originally and not more expensive.

Also Eliminate will be free and have ingame items to buy just like before, makes me think that the original price was going to be the lowest possible to allow in game selling.

Gameloft just sent me a promotional code for Real Soccer 2010 to review.

Initial impressions: Incredible presentation. Great gameplay. Crisp graphics. Believable sound. This is probably the first game I've played that can directly compared to a similar console game.

In short, worth it if you're all about some soccer.

I'll have a full review published by Monday.

Unless I'm missing something, Mafia Wars has been out for over two years now on iPhone.

man, for all the things an iphone can do, they really fucked up with not being able to send pictures with txt messages.

wat?

I guess in some countries MMS still aren't enabled (or oracrest is with AT&T and has yet to discover it was finally enabled 3 weeks ago)

ok, found some info on how to get this set up, so hopefully it works. downloading the update now.

I have only had my iphone for less than a week, and was surprised it wasn't enabled by default, like every other cell phone I've owned going back years.

I can't get past that goddamned part. :(

Wasted all my 12 potions there and the dude still wouldn't die. Any way to break the shield?

Well I'm not there yet to be honest. I'm coding my own iPhone game and am almost done.. So play time is limited (and Soosiz is monopolizing my attention :D ).

Hi all! Working on a review for Soosiz, a verynice 2D platformer. We are giving away 2 copies this weekend at thecurrentgamer.com sorry for the crappy link I'm traveling and mobile right now.
Also reviewing Cash Cow from Chillingo, and it is surprisingly REALLY good! Worth checking out

No Dutch Eredivisie means no sale, FIFA 10 it is for me. Though I'm still mildly interested which game has the better football gameplay (and I highly doubt RS2010 is anywhere near comparable to console versions of FIFA 10).

Hook Champ = bought. Yeus.

Edit: Did the intro level a few times. Loving it so far. Upgrades, controls feel great. Expecting good things. :]

Edit 2: Woo. Surely it won't last long, but that's alright.

Fuck... only played Hook Champ for a few min... must have honestly. Everything's great other than it sorely needing some level music.

A steal at .99

This man speaks the truth.
Hook Champ is Brilliant!

RelentlessRolento said:
yeah so far not many people have hook champ so it's easy to rank on the global boards. been averaging rank 7 and 8, but takin a break right now.

so good though.

I'm #1 in every stage I've played (the first 10 or so). I'd be happy if the game was done right now.

Although I am curious how quick the boards update. I have a feeling that the world is playing a cruel trick on me and a ton of people have crushed me (by tons I mean the 200 players that probably exist right now :P) but it's just slow to update. If someone could check and see if it shows me at the top that'd be cool.

But yeah, I'll be shilling for this game, hard. It all feels so right. I can imagine that, like say Mirror's Edge, there may be people who blast through once and complain (although I can see many enjoying it just for that), but this is seriously a game that's meant to replay. Or maybe it's just me.

Buy this game, everyone.

There was this game I saw a few screenshots of. I think that there is a girl at the top of the screen and you see a ground beneath her (pretty deep down) and than I think you drill for treasure or something. Very colorful and cute.

Any ideas?

From what the dev has ben saying the leaderboard servers are getting hammered so it's probably not true ur #1 and same with me.

But yeah, the game is so good. The upgrade system is fun, the grappling mechanic has a more than perfect "Bionic Commando" feel, and I want more!

The good thing is that the game will be getting updates with more levels for free, so the price it is right now is a steal.

I picked up Hook Champ as well. Its not made by the guys that made Sperlunker right?

No, totally different guys.

On a note of pricing, the game will sell for $3 regularly, and get random update sales for $1.99, but will never be .99 again, so get it at this price while you can peeps.
