Disappointed that catan is only local multiplayer, all player taking turns on one phone.
And you can't roll the dice yourself. The computer does it for you, slowly.

Came here to post my overall disappointment in Catan.

The graphics are ugly and cluttered; seeing the play elements is too much of a pain, especially a yellow player on a field is pretty much invisible at a fast glance. Local multiplayer only. Feels overall tacky.

Also, worst landscape animation ever. They just "pinched" the images in Photoshop and called that forest animation! It's a small thing but it covers the whole board and looks so much like crap... It looks like the board is breathing. :lol

Can you use Apple's TVOut cable to play games on a bigger screen? Are there any games that would benefit form such an arrangement?
Not that I know of, without a hack at least, and that hack had some performance issues I think. That was back with the 3G though iirc, so maybe the 3GS would help out there.

And while I'm not sure about really benefitting (other than just bigger screen), the main issue would be if it would be playable in the first place cause you wouldn't be looking at the control surface. Obvious ones that would work would be the basic tap screen ones like Canabalt or Baseball Slugger (although not in the menus), and stuff where you can touch and move from any point. Fixed button ones could work to an extent (like I could probably do it with DDR) and tilt only stuff, but the direct touch ones would be a pain

I think I'm falling out of love with the App Store. I'd like to jump back in and spend a lot of money so I can feel important. Anyone have like the best 5-7 games from the last month or so?

Beneath a steel sky for good adventure game times, hook champ for a unique touchscreen control with a great retro vibe.

Did you get Canabalt? I'm enjoying Rock Band as well.

And Warpgate will hopefully be out soon.

So i got my itouch 64gig yesterday. What a sleek, sexy and fast machine :D
Questions:
How do you know that an app is on special?
What's the tower defence game that everyone recommended in the thread?
And did dungeon hunter already went on sale and if so will it ever go on sale again?
Are audiosurf and world of goo really coming to the itouch?

edit: on and is a screen protector necessary for an itouch? I want to go the gym with it so it might get wet.

You don't, usually developers put it in the iTunes description. There are some sites that track game prices, don't know the name anymore though..

Can be many. Star Defense is well know, but I think you are referring to Geodefense Swarm (99c)

And did dungeon hunter already went on sale and if so will it ever go on sale again?
Don't believe it did, but trust me, it's worth full price.

Are audiosurf and world of goo really coming to the itouch?
Wouldn't know. Heard about Audiosurf coming though.

edit: on and is a screen protector necessary for an itouch? I want to go the gym with it so it might get wet.
Ehm, I don't have one yet, but some kind of case to protect it from humidity is always good plan.

1. Appshopper has price history, but for new apps (with only one price) you'll just have to depend on the description to say something like "LAUNCH SALE!" or some news/press release.

3. According to Appshopper Dungeon Hunter has only been that price so far.

4. World of Goo got announced semi recently, I'm not sure about a release timeframe though. Audiosurf is coming to Zune. I would guess part of it is not being entirely possible on the iPhone/iPod (chart generation would have to be done on the computer or on the server since devs cant access the music files directly on the iPhone/iPod through the official SDK), and MS probably gave him some cash to do it.

And a screen protector is for scratches (glass is about halfway on the hardness scale, anything above will scratch it), they won't help it from getting wet.

Speaking of which, watch out for the liquid damage indicators in the headphone and dock port. If they get wet they turn red/pink and Apple can deny warranty coverage because of it. I think it's $200 for repairs/replacements at that point. If you're paranoid get a case that covers both ends.

I very much like the board game, but never played the XBox version - what did that look like? The iPhone version doesn't look all that hot from the screens. This is an Official game, right?

Bought Skull Pogo and KeepDefend based on recommendations on this thread. Very happy with both both games.

Heres my full list of games since I bought a 32GB Touch a month ago:

Geodefense - fantastic tower defense game but hard as balls.
Soosiz - weird little platformer with similarities to Super Mario Galaxy, very cute.
Mr. AahH!! - great little game that can really get the adrenalin pumping. Basically you're swinging on a rope trying to land on platforms with variations in wind resistance and gravity.
Minigore - fun little shooter with nice graphics. Not a massive fan of the virtual joystick and theres really not much variety.
NFS Undercover - a 'high end' game with great graphics and solid gameplay. If you've played the proper games you know what to expect. Very surprised that they included the live action cut scenes as well. Maggie Q...droool.
Wolfenstein RPG - an RPG based on the Wolfenstein universe. Seems to be highly rated but I personally hate the controls. Virtual d-pads are awful.
Hook Champ - very retro looking but honestly I haven't played much.
Civ Rev - Excellent game, pretty much as good as the DS version.
Doodle Jump - insanely addictive tilt/jump game. Too bad I'm extremely bad at it.
Leaf Bound - similar to Doodle Jump with a japanese aesthetic.
Rolando - bought it based on hype but didn't enjoy it much. Similar to Loco Roco on PSP, but not as good.
Real Racing - Another 'high end' game with eats battery life like you won't believe. Graphics/sound/physics are unbelievably good for an iPhone game. Worth the high price especially if you're into racing games.
Dungeon Hunter - Yeah, another 'high end' game with great graphics and classic Diablo gameplay. Imagine hack & slash with decent loot.
Skull Pogo - currently my favourite game. You're a skull on a pogo stick jumping on vampire pigs with powerups and combos. Tilt based jumping controls.
KeepDefend - slow paced tower defense/RTS game with fantastic art and presentation.

Just on Skull Pogo, is level 5 the highest you can go? I'm trying to chain combos but for some reason I always end up dying at around 15. Is there a limit? I presumed it was just as many as you can get. I'm currently 10th on the leaderboard as "changchang" but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of people playing.

there's no limit, but if you don't hit someone before the little bar in the top left corner falls down then the combo starts over

Yeah thats what I thought, its just for some reason I can't get over 15, but at the same time get that combo a lot.

None of these games hold my attention anymore. :(

You're just in a phase. I'm kind of there at the moment, but then, I haven't played any real games for like a year or two. My iPhone being my only source of gaming, I now prefer casual pick up and play. I 'bought' world of goo, but found I only played like the first 4 levels on my Mac. Even that's not casual enough.

Well, i just bought Catan from the US appstore. I really like the board game, but had no XBox to play. Also, I have no friends, so AI could be fun.

It's kind of free, since I got a $15 voucher for Toys'rus from buying Scribblenauts, which I then used to get an iTunes card.

What's the word on the best Sudoku game? The version from Mighty Mighty Good Games and EA look to be the most popular and definitive. Anyone vouch for either?

Related: If you haven't yet, check out Capcom's "Kenken." It's a sudoku variation that it's just as addictive.

Waited months for Catan and it turns out to be a turd? UGH!

I spent all night with it last night - love it.

Sure, as mentioned, it's not PERFECT, but it's definitely playable.

Note, I haven't ever played the expansions, nor the XBox version - I'm just a fan of the board game. You can complain about AI or something if you want, but personally, when I play board games on a computer, I just want a board game LIKE play. I'm not looking for a challenge or interaction, I just want to kill some time with a familiar experience, so I normally stick AI on easy or normal, so I can spank them.

Catan plays as it should. I think I maybe saw a few glitches - for example, I SWEAR a dice roll that was supposed to give resources to someone else actually gave them to me, but maybe I was mistaken.

Trading is slightly janky, but not too bad. I just keep clicking the ok buttons when I DON'T want to trade. It's like I mistake it with 'continue' or 'move forward' (because that's what it is everywhere else). It is slightly slow, but not too bad (not technically, just general gameplay) - the biggest culprit is that it shows an animation of zooming into each hex that provided resources, and then handing them out to everyone who has them.

It gives a nice statistical breakdown at the end of each game.

Personally, I like the graphics. The 2-3 frame animations of the terrain is somewhat oldschool and comforting.

I thought it was a solid buy, especially since I already spent an entire evening on it. Lovely icon too, and I like the intro animation.

Yea I pretty much agree, in comparison to the marketplace it's probably not worth 5 dollars, though I've already played about 6 hours of it so I don't feel ripped off. I think the graphics are fine. My two biggest complaints are that it's dumb that each personality is a difficulty setting (I really dont like having to have 3 of the same person showing on the screen to make it all the same difficulty) and the lack of internet or bluetooth multiplayer. Passing the phone around is a crappy solution since then people cant try to keep track of who gets what during turns that aren't theirs.

I think it's worth $5. Come on, $5. Maybe there are better games for $5, but that's subjective.

I haven't even tried the different personalities - I just select one of each of the first three.

Lack of multiplayer is a bit of a let down (hot seat is stupid with an iPhone - the only real use for this is kids in a long-distance car ride), but then, I'm not hankering for multiplayer. Would be nice to play real humans, but I tend to find real humans (when random) to be dicks, so it's for the better. Would be nice to play some gaffers, though.

I'm not arguing that in a vacuum that it's not worth 5 dollars, but in an ecosystem where you can buy 5 $1 games with similar polish, graphics, and even have multiplayer, the $5 dollars can feel pretty steep in comparison to other things on the store.

Apologies in advance for the vagueness.

I recall recently seeing a new line-drawing game that was basically saying "If you like flight control/harbour master then you'll love this". It was like those but seemed to have more features.

Any thoughts?

Skullpogo is SICK, such an awesome little game. Got to #24 on my first try in classic mode. Game is actually really, really easy, especially with the arrow controls (my hands are a little too shaky for tilt to be accurate, but it felt right, too). Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Just awesome.

Hands down the best version of Tap Tap yet, and I own them all. Charts are phenomenal, especially the 5-lane Expert content. Great track listing, great charts, fun new arcade modes, power-ups, etc. You're a Metallica fan? BUY IT NOW!

For those of you who aren't Metallica fans (why not?!) but are Tap Tap veterans, this is the hardest game they've done. Don't pass it up!

it's easy to get in the top 20 since there's like 50 people who actually play, but it takes a lot of skill to get in the top 5-10

I just saw you improved again. I haven't had time to play, but that makes me sad.

i have sudoku grab and the ea one. the ea one is more polished graphic wise but grab isnt terrible.

the hardest puzzles on grab arent as hard as the hardest on ea.

grabs selling feature is you can take a picture of a sudoku puzzle like from a newspaper or computer screen and it will transfer it to your iphone so you can play it, kinda nice. ea one has a feature called newspaper where you have to manually enter the numbers.

grab has a nice feature that ea doesnt. like when you want to write a number in but not for real you can put in a little number (both do this) but grab you can do the little number in three different colors. so what i do on the hard ones is the ones i dont know you can do the little number in one color and then pick a different color and try to work it out a little to see if im on the right track. you can only do the ea little numbers in one color so you cant do that.

also grab has another nice feature. say you have a box and its either a 1 or a 4 so with the little numbers you put that in and same with the box above it. then you find out that the bottom box is a 1 when you make that change the other box will get rid of the little one and leave the little 4. it makes you go through the puzzles faster.

i bought grab first and missed some of the things it did that ea doesnt plus its cheaper. also while you can grab puzzles for grab it has puzzles in it so you dont have to but its an option. also grab has a feature where you can email a friend with the time you finished a puzzle and they can try it (provided they have the game) its a neat feature that if i knew someone else into sudoku i would use :/

so they are both good but i lean towards sudoku grab

Robocalypse is 99c for a limited time.

That's right. You heard me.
One of the best portable RTS I've ever played is available right now for one (1) dollar.

Buy it or you're cheap.
