Good to see the southern hemisphere kicking all kinds of arse, too! As an Australian, on behalf of our country we'll claim you as our own ;)

Heh, proud to be on the list along with Phar Lap, Crowded House, and Russell Crowe (or are you still trying to give him back?).

You guys made Bird Strike? I did not know :/

Not to worry. We have gone out of our way to create some space between Sidhe and our iPhone division/label, PikPok. Want it to operate as its own thing for the most part, I'm just covering for Jos (who is the PikPok portfolio manager) on GAF while he is travelling :)

Well good to know for sure it'll run on my next phone...actually I'll have the iPad before then. I wonder how puketastic it'll be to play on that.

And while I'm on the subject of random things to hate on my 3G, OpenFeint can burn in hell. NO THANKS I DO NOT WANT YOUR "COOL FEATURES" THAT MAKE GAMES RUN LIKE SHIT. DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH.

Wanted to post an update since I just saw this, perhaps iSR will work every time on 3Gs after all. Apple just put a firmware update out (OS 3.1.3) today. One of the features of the update is..

  • Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances

Might this finally be the salvation for Synth Racing?
I'm installing it now to find out.

Speaking of OpenFeint, Hook Champ is completely unplayable for me now. So bummed.

Ugh wish I hadn't bought ghouls n ghosts. Frame rate is terrible, on a 3gs too.
Likewise. I've even tried restarting the device and clearing the memory via MemInfo and it still runs like shit. I feel ripped off.

Is it a "port" of the PSP one or something?

No it's a new game.
I wish it gets ported to PSP (Minis ?) though.

I think its perfect as a handheld game, it works if you want to do something mindless and completely unfun for a couple of minutes.

Ah that explains that, cool game btw :D

Haven't been following this thread for a while, but I see a few people mentioning Sword & Poker. Great little puzzle/poker RPG hybrid game. I recommend it. Well worth the price of admission.

Such a good game. Lasts a good while too.

how is it unplayable? it's my favorite game on my 3gs and i love the openfeint features.. it's kind of nifty tracking your achievements

Hah I saw that earlier and was thinking the same thing for a few games along with yours.

I enabled it for Flick Kick Football and god it sucks so much when it pops up with something. It's screwed me up a few times cause it freezes the game for a few seconds. The same thing happened with iQuarterback when that got OpenFeint added. So goddamn obnoxious.

I'm on an iPhone 3G. I imagine the hit isn't noticeable or negligible on the newer hardware (iPod touch 2nd gen is faster than the 3G so that's probably ok too).

If he's experiencing what I have it freezes up the game for a few seconds whenever something OpenFeint related happens. New high score at the end of a game, fine. Locking up the game and all input then skipping ahead to tell you about some shitty achievement, that's pretty annoying and makes high score chasing quite hard cause the OF stuff can fuck you up at any time.

I wonder whether that's a fault of OpenFeint or a fault of the integration. For example, if you establish the connection each time you want to do something OpenFeint-related and wait for it, hey, that's a certain reason for a hiccup. Shit like that has to be concurrent by design, or it's just really bad. That should, in theory, be a no-brainer though.

Edit: Looked at their SDK, and they're very specific about when to hold your game, so that's not sounding too swell, tbh.

I'll raise this with the dev team and see if there is anything we can do.

Quick question, though maybe it's not the best place to ask it: is there a way to develop games and apps for iPhone from a Windows device, or is it a Mac compulsory?

Thanks! :)

Mac.

You could go the Hackintosh way, but I wouldn't recommend it because it typically involves piracy, and that would render your SDK agreement void.

Thanks for replying, though.

Any kind of mac would work? I mean, a second handed 5 years old mac, for example.

If you want to really go for this, you need a recent Mac with a recent OS (Leopard works, Snow Leopard is recommended), you need to join the ADC and you need to get the iPhone SDK, which includes XCode, an emulator and other nifty stuff.

It makes sense to get testing devices as well, obviously.
To deploy to testing devices, you need certificates you only get if you enroll to the iPhone Developer Program and pay $99 a year.

More at this Apple dev hub: http://developer.apple.com/

I can only develop a shitty news app for my site, coding a game would be even more freaking hard >_> Much props to the game devs here.

Has to be an intel Mac, unfortunately. So say the MacBooks but not the iBooks before that which are PowerPC based. Cheapest solution is a second hand MacBook, or a new or second hand Mac Mini. I'm contemplating the latter option (500 euro new).

The upside of that is that the simulators for the iPhone and I presume also the iPad run really, really fast, as they're basically the same OS as Mac OS/X.

Still, I wish Apple would allow you to purchase a VMWare containing OS/X for development or something similar.

Oh and yeah, it needs to have Leopard for iPhone development, and maybe Snow Leopard is required for iPad, not sure.

A MacBook is a good investment in my opinion - if you wanna go commercial, there shouldn't be much of a discussion. That of course requires a professional attitude towards the topic.

This is where Unity comes in handy, if you know the basics of code you can more or less make a game in a week with it (a simple one mind you) but the downfall is that Unity can be a bit of a bloated elephant, but it's the best value for money engine you can buy atm, you can even make windows and mac games / programs with it.

I don't know if this has been posted but i was browsing the Top 25 free apps and apparently iBomber is free. Thought i read about it a while back of it being a fun game.

To an extent. Can't really get into it for an extended period of time though, to be honest.

Definitely worth checking out in any case!

There are two ways of implementing Open Feint.

The quick way: you just plug it in. Takes a few hours, everything easy out-of-the-box, job done. Unfortunately it behaves as though you have unlimited resources and will steal frames from the game in order to post achievements and scores.

The slow way: turn off all the extra gubbins, force it to be quiet while in-game, fix their XML parser (the benefit of being open source - you can fix their code). This takes a lot longer to implement, but the game experience is 100% nicer.

Any decent developers should be taking the second option....

So following up on my brickbreaker recommendation request I tried:
-Radial 50: It definitely has a very hip feel to it. Feels like the PSN/XBLA "cool" title of the month. Aesthetically it's very well done and the video-game themed names are fun even if you wish the levels themselves had a bit more life to them. The mechanic is OK--paddle in a circle you just move up/down to move it around--but there are times when I feel that I clearly hit the ball with the edge of the paddle and it doesn't register. Maybe it's just me.
-Seraphim's Scepter: The theme on this game is just embarassing. Cheaply-drawn PSN Premium Wallpaper looking girls with boobies. Kind of a shame because it has my favorite gameplay of the three. You don't have a paddle per se but rather you touch the bottom of the screen to "flash" your paddle which stays on for about 2 seconds maybe? You can also have two at once and move them in that brief time period to play the angles. The power-ups are really solid to and you can have 50+ balls going at once in some situations. Can be a bit of a thumb-cramper though, especially if you play with two thumbs.
-Block Breaker 2: GAH the visual style of this game just kills it for me. So amazingly chintzy. Has by far the most traditional gameplay of the three games. Slide your paddle. Sometimes you get rockets yadda yadda.

Inotia and Crayon Physics Deluxe are both down to 99c. I assume CPD is worth getting for that, but anyone tried Inotia? How does it compare to the other RPGs?

So as of late I've been having an issue with some of my apps (games mostly) that when I launch them, they show the open screen and then jump back to the iPhone menu. All of apps are up to date and everything else (facebook, twitter, etc.) load just fine. Any suggestions?

Reinstall them. It's a common issue that I've never seen a solution for outside of a reinstall. The Facebook app does it so much that I stopped using it altogether.

So, for apps that I've paid for, can I redownload them at no cost? (I've never used iTunes before and just got my iPhone last week)

Thanks for the info. I just bought Crayon Physics Deluxe. On the topic of physics based games, I also bought Implode! last night. It's a game where you are given a structure and you have to try to take it down with dynamite. You're given certain types/amounts of dynamite to use, and of course your explosion is rated based on various things. Fun game.

3.1.3 seems to make Pac-Man CE launch somewhat reliably, only tried Synth Racing a few times but that worked too, same with iQuarterback which was giving me some problems before.

Yeah that sounds in line with what I've seen. Does it affect the 3GS/3rd gen touch or is it not noticeable there?

Another option would be the Mac mini...and an iPad! It'll be a bit more of course ($100 comparing new prices) but it'll let you test for the a new device and put ideas into practice, if you have any for the large screen.

As answered above, yes.

But I would like to point out that you CANNOT download again music that you've purchased (and downloaded once). Back it up. I think I've read reports of people who have had Apple let them download some files for technical reasons, but it's not easy.

That sounds like a memory issue IF you briefly see the opening screen. If this is happening, try opening safari and closing all tabs. When you hit home when there are no tabs, it actually quits the safari process (which normally runs int eh background hogging memory).

This is how I got Pacman CE to load. Without doing this, invariably Pacman will crash.

If the issue is that apps don't even load and it briefly just goes black before launching to the homescreen again, this could be an authorisation issue. For me, resyncing fixes it, for others redownloading any app fixes it. Furthermore, the latest 3.1.3 is meant to address an authorisation issue, but not sure if it helps with this.

Alright I don't want to make a new thread just for this, so I'm coming here.

My iPod is dying and I need a new iPod. I want an iPod touch, but I'm just thinking.. Is it worth waiting for the new one? I'm hearing rumours that there could be a 4g model this spring with a camera. Although who knows, I could very well be waiting until September..

So wait, or buy iPod touch now?

If you can live without your iPod for 6 months, wait until then. Though MacWorld is next week, so if there is an announcement to be made it may be made there. Though I think it's always been in June for the iTouch/Phone announcements?

Apple no longer attend MacWorld.

He's right, forgot about that, last year was the last time. MacWorld is a consumer show, for developers/engineers on Apple products.

Completely slipped my mind.

whitehawk said:
does not compute

Macworld sounds like something apple would be hosting.

Macworld is a professional conference for MacUsers, but also open to consumers as a kind of 'meet'. Exhibitors present wares for all things Apple-related.

Traditionally, Apple has always attended and given a Keynote, and typically announced new products. They wanted to break the 'expectation' for them announcing stuff on a cycle dictated by a conference, so they bailed out.

Yes, they could always just attend and exhibit, but they also gathered that they were never showing anything that their Applestores didn't, and it costs a lot of money to attend. Personally, I think they could afford it, and they could do with some demos of the iPad this year to drum up hype.

Some people see it as Apple 'abandoning' their core user, although it's true they are probably trying to throw off the notion that they are a company that makes products for the hardcore.

whitehawk said:
Dammit. I don't want to wait until September, but I have a feeling they are going to announce a iPod one right after I buy one :lol

I had a small prediction that Apple were going to update the iPod touch with a camera, because it seemed to be really lacking in the latest update, but was also followed by reports that it was geared for one. In fact, Wikipedia actually say the last one is still '2nd generation' due to the lack of any substantial addition (although a processor equivalent to the 3Gs is nothing to snuff at).

That never happened though, so now I think they're concentrating on the iPad. Probably no iPod touch until October (the usual time for iPod updates). That said, my predictions are nearly 100% wrong :lol. I am so way off with everything I say :p

I bought an iPod Touch two weeks ago or so and I'm okay. Take that as you will! :lol
