Well, I just finished the last level of Pew! and it was a pretty fun game. The write up at creativeapplications.net is pretty accurate though, in that once you're toward the end of the game, your ship is so powerful that every level except the very last one (and even most of the last one, honestly) is trivially easy, so when you're finished with the game, you've got... one level to play. Also, it's not like there're different viable upgrade paths either; there's really only one right (obvious) way to do it. Finally, since you're locked to the bottom of the screen with horizontal movement only, a la old school Space Invaders, you can't see your ship properly without moving your ship around with your finger toward the top of the screen, which is kind of awkward. Still, fun, and the music is excellent. Worth the 99 cents, I'd say.

I've been playing this and I like it, but am I right in thinking that the only equipment you get is shields? Seems a bit odd for a rogue-like.

Happy to see a bunch of people enjoying it after the Free Day. It's been my favorite app on the iPhone since it came out. Keep in mind that this is a re-make (of sorts) of a 1982 PC Game of the same name, so it's not going to be as deep as Nethack and other rogue-likes. I tend to think of it as a streamlined, light rogue-like. Which works great for me, especially on the iPhone.

However, the developers, who are pretty active on Touch Arcade's forum, seem to want to add a bunch of new features to the both the iPhone and iPad versions. Here's a post I made on the touch arcade forum and their response (excuse my fanboyish-ness):

First, I wanted to give you guys a big THANKS! for releasing this on the iPhone. I've done a lot of research and tried a lot of games and this is one of my top 3 favorites. It's perfect to play in long stretches, or if I only have a minute or two (since it saves your progress if you close mid-game). It's really polished and fun, great interface/controls, and a perfect light-roguelike. I don't understand why it doesn't get more attention but I hope word of mouth continues to grow for it and you guys get the payoff you deserve.

Anyway, I'll have an iPad in the next couple weeks and am looking forward to seeing what you do with Legends. With a game like Fargoal it's pretty easy to come up with really interesting and fun additions to it, as well as to just add layers to its gameplay (even though it is based off of a classic). I'm going to wait for the first update before I purchase it, though, since I want to make sure you guys deliver on your promise of makint Legends iPad specific.

Anyway, I would absolutely love it if you implemented some or all of these ideas for both versions:

- Multiple character sprites to choose from (or, perhaps, customizable hair color & mix and match head and body?)

- Really simple quests where you have to search the side level dungeons in hopes of finding a certain item, killing a certain item, to give more incentive to explore the extra dungeons on that floor

- A way to make monsters more unique (changing the size of the sprite, to make a tiny ogre vs a large ogre).

- Of course a way of differentiating the varying levels of monsters (weak vs normal one)... a simple color change would more than suffice

Pure pipedream stuff:

- Sandbox-y/roguelike & random events (where different pieces of the gameplay can combine to create something unexpected -- certain enemies fighting each other?). And events that can happen in more than one square... a cave-in that changes the surrounding layout of the level, for example. Nothing super complex, of course! I understand Fargoal is supposed to be nice and streamlined and I'm quite happy with it if it stays that way!)

Thanks again, you guys have done an amazing job with the game so far!

Wow Jehbeh,

Those are all great suggestions! We have been thinking about most (or all) of the things that you have talked about and we will *definitely* be implementing at least 90% of what you have suggested. We love it when people weigh on on content suggestions like this, so please keep the suggestions coming.

Soon new to iPad: We have been having some fun with some enhanced sprite illustration techniques, so we might include one or more new "looks" to the character and monster sprites. Also, we have long wanted to add new character types and sprite choices, so definitely those things will be coming too.

Since we are a three-person team, please be a little patient with us about the timing of some of these additions. But we are excited about things to come — I especially like the addition of small side-quests and challenges (which we will enjoy continuing to add into the game).

Sincerely,

Jeff McCord

Only about 6gig of my 8gig touch is full but it's taking over an hour to restore a backup on it, beast! slow as shit :(

In the latest efforts to fix my wifi I cleaned the touch completely to see if it will help, after this I will just give up on playing IMO since disconnections ruin that game so much.

So is it wrong that my OCD is compelling me to uncover every inch if every floor before moving down?

i'd say yeah, those floors are massive!

also it can get pretty boring that way

i usually grind a level at first to prevent a chest from blowing up in my face and killing me, then pick up levels gradually as i go down. like i said, there's no point in grinding around if the enemies are only giving you a small percentage of the experience needed for the next level.

as for items, getting a bunch of good ones seems more to do with luck than searching every square inch of the dungeon. sometimes i'll fall through a trap and land in a huge pile of recovery potions and sword scrolls.

but, i've yet to beat it, so my advice might be all wrong.

No, don't.. Just started playing and I need someone to play with. On that note will someone make a thread for IMO like the one for we rule?

It's ridiculous how much good stuff hits "free" at some point.

Over the last few days I've picked up Sword of Fargoal (more on this below), Crap of Defense (surprisingly entertaining), Unify, Last Front: Europe and Auditorium.

I've only spent 99 cents in the app store this year and that was on the Simpsons, since I'm sure it'll never hit free.

As for Fargoal, we had the game (a legitimate copy, no less) on our C64 back in the day. Back then I was young and had a nightmare about it (a weird looping scary nightmare during which a monk would "kill" me over and over.. the only nightmare I've ever had about a video game). Needless to say, between my brother and I, we never recovered the sword. We got it once, one of the more exciting moments of our C64 gaming lives, but died pretty shortly after.

I wasn't sure how the iPod version would be, but they really nailed the stuff they needed to: sound effects and the art style. The sprites are obviously more detailed than the C64 version, but they come off just right.

Probably never get around to playing them!

Impressions ASAP!!

I don't know where the official thread keeps disappearing to, I thought more people here were playing it!

My early impressions are that the game is fun! Production values, gameplay and soundtrack are solid. I find it a little bit hard but I think that's due to me being slow on the learning curve as opposed to actual difficulty (i.e. the game replenishes your health after each encounter). I'm not sure what to make of the story yet but it's still early in the game. I had to stop playing because I have work to do and this game is one of those games I can play for hours if I'm not careful; it's that good.

Just keep in mind that these impressions are coming from someone who isn't a hardcore RPG fan (although I do love Final Fantasy) so perhaps those among us who are can give us impressions on how this compares to other RPGs on other platforms. Of the one's I've played on iPhone this one is among my favorites already.

$13 is steeper than most of us are used to paying for iPhone games but I don't regret it one bit as of this writing.

Anybody having trouble going into the Touch-Arcade forums..feels like the GAF 500 error when the NPD results come out. Never seen the Touch-Arcade massively overloaded like that...Cant' say if it's good thing or bad thing..

Is it as good as Espgaluda?

Doubtful, I haven't had a chance to play it yet and ESPgaluda won't work on my lowly 3g - anyways, the two games aren't really comparable, both in terms of budget and gameplay. Icarus-X doesn't appear to stray into the bullet hell genre outside of boss battles and seems to be more about memorising enemy attack patterns, as every enemy in a pattern must be destroyed to maintain the multiplyer chain.

Here's a video review of Icarus-X from AppSpy;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZTRcqq1T4g

ESPgaluda's made by the might of Cave, just one guy made Icarus-X and after playing it for an hour or so I would definetly reccomend this game to shmup fans. The controls are responsive, the graphics are spartan but look nice and clean and everything moves at a good pace, the soundtrack is excellent, the chaining system is simple and fun (destroy everything to maintain your chain) and the boss battles are really awesome. I think most people will be suprised how challenging the game can be, there are 5 levels and so far according to the developer no one has yet completed Easy mode (although he's going to rush through an update to make easy mode easier), but you can watch the replay of the top 10 players for each difficulty and use slo-mo practice mode to help.

It might not be as glorious as ESPgaluda II (damn my shitty 3G x_x), but for a game developed by one guy who's clearly very passionate about SHMUPS Icarus-X is an impressive feat, a fantastic SHMUP and well worth your $1.99/£1.19.

Incidently, how many good SHMUPS are on the iPhone? So far I know of;

BusterRed
ESPgaluda II
Icarus-X
Tyrian
Sketch Nation Shooter
Space Invaders: Infinity Gene

I can't make threads either but I tried IMO and I don't... get it? The game seems charming enough and the novelty of it isn't lost on me, but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing in the game.

Chaos Rings is quite hard :x

I've died multiple times because the enemies' attacks are doing more harm than mine... One of my characters missing a target again doesn't help either, lol.

I'm having a ton of fun though. I also LOVE the fact the game is perfectly playable with only one hand, what you're going to do with your other hand is totally up to you!

€10,50 well spent it seems so far.

sketch nation is actually a good shooter? i figured it would be a mediocre one, like most games with user created content

It's not amazing or anything, but the basic mechanics are solid (though hit detection can sometimes be a bit wonky, depending on the size of the ship drawing you are using). The real draw is the user generated content, because you can design the ships, the enemies and the backgrounds in any way you want there's real scope for creating some unique looking shooters.

I'd imagine you could actually use pixel art in sketch nation, which could potentially result in some pretty amazing Thunder Force II action. Yes sir.

Yeah, it doesn't help that they don't tell you what to do. You kinda have to figure it out on your own. I just started playing around with things.

Edit: On another note I will be on later today on the server "BigMama". I am KingHenry. I can help you out when I get on at around 6 est

or you could just play Thunder Force 2, which will doubtlessly be better than the flash game you just built

I found myself really enjoying Radiant, it is a bit like space invaders but with nice graphics and an upgradeable weapons system.

Just downloaded an update for Space Miner...

New Graphics engine for 3GS and Ipod Touch 3rd Gen

More equipment.... Licence Level 7 to acess ultra expensive new tech

Facebook/Twitter integration.

*edit.....so l fire up the game after the update and it crashes back to the homescreen when l try to load my original profile :(

True, but I have played the game so many times over the years that I don't need to plug in a cartridge anymore, I can just slide back and watch it play out on my eyelids :)

but as to what you were saying, i don't know if importing pixel art would work. i hear the outlines have to be nice n thick for the game to recognize your drawings. maybe if you broke out the graph paper

the thing is, i don't want to have to design a level. i'd rather just draw out some enemies and backgrounds and have the game kind of randomly put it together for me. i heard there is a mode that does this, but i also heard it doesnt do a very good job of it

Sketch Nation is not a very good shooter. The user level creation tools aren't really all the impressive either. Developers seem have it backwards when it comes to community-generated content. They keep making nice level editors for mediocre games. The reason I made maps for Starcraft back in the day was because I enjoyed playing the game so much that I was inspired to try to create something.

You do make a good point, this software may not be ideal for a D.I.Y shooter if you wanna go pixel art and a little polished (though for a couple of bucks, it looks like a ton of fun). Probably better off seeking out some native modern PC version of SEUCK or something. Pardon my derailing, carry on-

I consider buying it for the iPad, has anyone tried Espgaluda on it? How does it look/play on the bigger screen?
I bought it when it came out but today was the first time I got to actually play it...I downloaded it to an iPad in my local Apple Store (signed in to the App Store, downloaded, signed out*) and played for like 20 minutes.

I didn't change the screen setting so whatever the default is, it looked alright, a bit blurry but totally playable. If you've played stuff in emulators and scaled up it kind of looked like that.

Plays fine for the most part. I left it on the stand thing and just used both hands to move around and control the buttons. I think the only difficulty was that the iPhone 2x doesn't completely fill the iPad screen, so theres a little dead area around the border you have to watch out for, but that was rarely a problem.

*Fun fact about in store iPads, you can't move or delete apps, but you can download and install new ones. I wonder if anyone else played it today, I put it there in the afternoon. I'm guessing they do complete wipes each day like they do with the Macs so it'll be gone tomorrow, their loss!

As badly as I want to try chaos rings I know it will run so much smoother on 4th Gen iPhone compared to my 3G and the price will likely drop to 10 by then.

Must resist!!!!

edit: hmmmmm I wonder how it would look on my ipad...

damn it!

Square games are on sale for 2 weeks. I checked the FFs and they are 1 euro less...
Is the first one worth it?
the first one IMHO is the best FFI has ever looked and has some nice extras and is built well for the iphone. with all of that being said though, at the end of the day it is STILL FFI. Take that for what you will. But basically if you enjoy playing FFI every now and then it is the definitive version out.

So after finally messing around with Chaos Rings on my 3G, I bought an iPad and got Geometry Wars: Touch. :D

As I'm relatively new to the iPad/iPhone gaming scene, what would you recommend for a dungeon crawler/RPG? I heard Zenonia was pretty good and saw that the sequel has been released. I'm also planning on getting Espgaluda II.
