Worth it and more. Buy!

On an unrelated note, I just realized that I hate tower defense games :\

if you play the wrong ones, you'll inevitably get that impression. That, and the fact that it must be the most slandered game genre on the internet.

I really think that TD games really are hit and miss for most people. It's like TD as a genre got its start as most-are-unpolished warcraft 3 maps and free flash games, which had the double effect of making people look at them as less-than distractions in between war3 melee maps as well as forever giving birth to the "joke" of paying for a TD game when "they all used to be free".

Also, once you figure out some hole or trick in any given TD game they can get quickly boring for subsequent plays. Vector TD 2 for example is an OK game but you basically can't beat any or most of the maps unless you eventually just spam massive amounts of the red rocket tower with slow towers mixed in. When this happens, though it's usually just the mark of a badly balanced game and you shouldnt take it as the genre in general.

The same kinda goes for plants vs zombies, once you get used to it, unlock every tower and every map becomes "make super repeaters with torchwood and pumpkins" and the beginning of every map is best prepared with two rows of flowers (even on night maps this will work!) and potatoes/squash to kill the beginning zombies, then it gets a little dry. The difference with PVZ though is that there are the most towers imaginable, you arent penalized for not saving up for interest (better for casual players) and the amazing graphics.

I'm just ranting now, all I wanted to mention was that I think specific people are drawn to TD games while the other option seems to be straight up disgust. Theres nothing really wrong with this but being on the camp of "completely obsessed with every one" I really cant fathom why some people dont like them! :D

Oh, and the creeps is absolutely one of the much much better ones out there. I could name about 10 that are complete trash on the app store right now and the creeps has always been one of my faves. very well balanced and unique.

Creeps is my favourite TD game. It actually has you trying to balance doing something while mowing down enemies (destroying terrain).
I hated this and found the controls too touchy, accidentally aiming away from enemies or worse deleting a tower when I hadn't intended to. Not the worst TD, but not one I found worth playing.

could that have been lag from a iphone 2g/3g though?

I have a 3gs. Nothing to do with lag. I just think the gameplay flow is poor. It would likely work better on an ipad though.

To each their own, I guess. I liked having to balance shooting enemies with destroying terrain. I never had any problem with the controls.

So I've tried 180 and....it's good!

It's like a mix of tetris attack and bust a move, with it's own unique twists, which is basically a formula for success just to start. My girlfriend currently can't put it down.

It has openfeint support as well as a good set of 27 achievements, two difficulties and 3 different modes. There's a choice of a few avatars/cheerleaders to use that change their expression based on how well or badly you do. I can't say I give a crap about this feature but it's there for a little personalization.

It reminds me of bejeweled in it's simplicity both in presentation and crispness. You have a time attack mode or a standard endless mode and some type of line-adding mode that seems very similar to time attack mode so i will probably never bother except maybe to get an achievement or two.

Like I said before, it's a combination of tetris attack and bust a move. You basically have tetris attack upside down, and instead of just matching three of some tile, you have to "activate" any current set of three by hitting them with your bust-a-move-like shots. instead of swapping tiles like tetris attack, they stay in the same position but have a "back" color like othello that you can flip to in order to either make a combo or whatever you can.

The puzzle structure is rather solid, at first I felt like I would say I couldnt care less about the tapping to switch the tiles back and forth, but that's the reason it's called 180! Also, it functions as a unique twist upon classic "panel de pon" gameplay so it's perfectly fine. It's actually grown on me too, to help create combos every once in a while.

I also wanted to say I didn't prefer the overall look of the game, but what struck me as very pleasing was exactly how crisp and smooth the menus are, which is much more important. Really the only thing that would need a little work is that the cheerleaders leave a lot to be desired, they are a little too boring in comparison to the cute bust a move dragons or whatnot.

The game looks great on either the iphone/ipod screen or at 1x on an ipad, but stretched on an ipad looks as jaggy as every other iphone game does.

One of the few things I would say would improve the game in general is every so often if a tile you could shoot at the blocks (or from the top) would be a special tile that exploded some blocks or some other special powers would be great.

In an ipad version, in landscape with twice or thrice the amount of tiles coming down from the top for crazy added hectic crazyness, maybe even an option for a landscape or portrait mode where landscape gives you more tiles this could be one hell of an ipad version of a game.

Conclusion: A great value at 1.99 for a puzzle game with an endless mode, high scores, achievements and a very solid puzzle structure that you can sink many hours into. Finally, my girlfriend is very picky about games she wants to play, and she likes the game so end of discussion.

Anyone want me to review any other games? Just let me know!

Awesome, I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to put the game through it's paces.

Lots of valid critiques, I wish we did some things differently as you mentioned but overall I am very happy with how 180 turned out. If we move some units you can bet we'll do a follow-up that implements a lot of cool ideas like you've suggested!

iPad version would be rocking, I have thought this game would be nuts on a much larger playfield. Time will tell..

Anyway I have made a nicer youtube trailer for the game, and here's a link to the iTunes.

I am really proud of what we've done (not just Headcase, but all the other little devs who are stepping up and putting out wonderful software) and I hope the community can continue to embrace it - to tell you the truth, working on iPhone projects is all I wanna be doing for the near future :) Apple's got a lot of critics, but they've really changed the game in a big way for how a lot of us indies can operate and connect with people/each other. It's such a blast right now, even if it is really hard to actually make $$ :)

how is s&p2 compared to s&p1? Havent played either, should i start with 1?
They're quite similar, but SP2 has a bunch of improvements. You can safley skip the first.

Sword & Poker is so rad. Buy it GAF, now!

i just have to say....ive played defender chronicles since the game was first available like a year or more ago, and its not even ipad optimized but looks great on the ipad. so go buy it!

Say More. I beat the original, and wonder if it's worth getting the sequel.

I'm not sure yet, but from the small amount of the sequel I've played (I'm still finishing up the first game!) it seems like a bunch of little tweaks, improvements and variations on the formula makes it a better starting off point.

I'm sure some more veteran S&P GAFfers will report back soon whether its worth getting both.

I played S+P1 enough to buy all of the items in the shop, I wonder if it will unlock anything special on S+P2 when I play it?

Probably not.

I haven't played sp2 just yet, but I did open it far enough to check out the settings. It has different card backs and multiple player slots. Just a few things to show that care has been put into it.

I quite liked SP, but 2 really does appear to be more of the same. Was hoping for some changes to the mechanics or something gameplay related but no dice (so far).

If there's an unlock, it doesn't show up for a little while. I won a sword from a guy and opened the shop only to find lower-tier weapons available, so I'm guessing there isn't an unlock. Ah well.

S+P1 players will be able to jump right in, and I don't think new players would miss anything from skipping S+P1 and going right for this. The only difference I've noticed so far is the lightning that appears when you complete a hand, and the new enemies/areas. But I liked the first one a lot, so I can't complain. Especially for $2.

Exactly. In essence, it's no different than say, deleting your save and playing again, but you don't get a fencing mushroom in the first one. Heck, people buy the pokemon games when they don't really add all that much. $2. Sweet!

And who knows what later things show up in the later levels - the first one had a lot more stuff than the first levels would have you guess.

It's definitely one of the best games on the platform for starters. I would pay more for more depth/innovation but I also recognize the market realities of being in a land where people complain about a game they bought for $2 going on sale for $1.50 two weeks later.

Okay, so you have to do the multiple dungeons to get the keys that will unlock the tower. You can't even get in until you have them all, I think. I have one and it won't open. :lol

So far in the second dungeon there are
Mimic chest guys
, ? blocks where you fight a random enemy, and I stopped right before a gold skeleton that's sparkling on the map. Not sure what he does yet.

Also, lol @ the description of the first boss having a real minor spoiler about "choose from your two magics" when you only have one at that point.

[edit - sparkly guy never attacks, but you only get one turn to beat him. If you do, you get a rare item. I beat the skeleton guy and got a bone cudgel that's highest on the rank of available weapons. Spiffy.]

If one was to choose between Chaos Rings, Final Fantasy, or Final Fantasy II...what would be the better option?
Depends on you. Of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II, better to get the first one, just because both are very similar, you might as well start from the beginning. Now, whether to get that or Chaos Rings, are you new to RPG's? If so, then go with that. Final Fantasy is more of a retro thing, not for RPG beginners, though compared to newer RPG's (and Chaos Rings) it is rather simple. If you are an RPG veteran...make up your own mind :)

I guess also matters if you have the PSP versions of Final Fantasy I/II, as the iPhone ones are pretty much straight ports from those but with new controls.

I'm definitely an RPG beginner. Although I've spent some time with Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, I rarely get into them. However, I want to give one of these 3 a shot. Does one have a more of an interesting battle system? Also, how are random battles handled in Chaos Rings?

PES 2011 is coming to iPhone/iPod Touch

I just emailed the PR contact for Konami Europe about it (since Konami USA never knows what's going on)...

Steve Merrett:

Watch this space..

Should be interesting to see how it will turn out. It's crazy that I'm going to get a downloadable version of PES and Lumines on the iPod Touch when I couldn't get that on the freaking PSPgo.

To the random battles question, after a certain point in the game you get the ability to turn random encounters off in the options menu. That way you can explore without getting jumped every 10 steps.

Both have good battle systems, but Chaos Rings has the more interesting one (Solo attack vs Dual / DNA abilities) but that's to be expected since FF1 is 20 years old. They've improved some stuff in FF1 as well though to make it more modern, such as preventing you from wasting an attack if another party member kills an enemy you are about to hit.

I noticed De Blob has dropped from $3.99 to $0.99 today. I've watched a few YouTube videos of the game, but it's hard to get a very good feel for how it plays?

Anyone want to provide a quick mini-review?

CARCASSONNE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AS IPHONE AND (eventually) IPAD BOUND! YESSSSSSS!

http://toucharcade.com/2010/05/04/carcassonne-coming-to-an-iphone-near-you/

Details:
One of the most pressing questions answered first:

We will start by selling the iPhone/iPod version for the introductory price of $4.99 (3.99 EUR) this May.

We will begin work on the iPad version right after that and make the app universal - i.e. update the game to run natively on the iPad as well. Once the app is universal we will end introductory pricing and sell the game for $9.99.

So if you buy early, you essentially get a discount on the version that runs on iPhone, iPod and iPad. We hope that’s a fair deal.

To you and all who replied, I appreciate the recommendations, but I've played (read: own and sorely regret) all the 'good' tower defense games. I just gave up after PvZ because at that point I was sure I just hated the genre and no game in that genre was going to make me enjoy these types of games; which annoyingly enough seem to thrive on the iPhone OS platform. I've purchased a lot of dumb things from the App Store (That's What She Said app, T-Pain Auto-Tune app :\) and yet the tower defense games are the only apps I wish I could return and get a refund for. I *hate* these games so much :(

eh, it would be worth it if the game actually worked, and if the interface wasn't so clunky. the touch controls just don't feel responsive, and i really doubt that's an issue they're aiming to fix in the emergency patch.

100 seems to be influenced a lot by Mystery Dungeon games, a lot like the original Shiren with the versatility of items and whatnot, and like Chocobo in how your character has a mp meter and skills to go with it.

wish i was playing it right now, but it would just break and piss me off

Fair enough. The only tower defines games that I bought were geodefense, geodefense swarm, creeps and plants vs zombies. I liked geo dense at the time, but it's my least played - not too bad co side ring I paid like 99c each for them.

My biggest purchase in gaming that I never really played is real racing which I paid twice full price for and played intermittently at best.

That said, I bought monkey island and beneath a steel sky and never got around to starting them. Justw too many games and not enough time. By the time I finish whatever game I'm on, a new time waster is available.

Hey one of my friends has a GPS enabled game on his droid that shows the map of where you are, and then it populates it with zombie stickmen that walk towards you slowly. You can walk around and try to avoid them. Is there an iPhone app like that?

I remember that there's games that use the GPS like that but I don't know if there was a zombie one. The one I remember seeing was supposed to be like an RPG or treasure hunt type thing I think.

PES 2010 heads to the App Store!

Konami announces bespoke version of PES 2010 for iPhone and iPod touch.

Konami Digital Entertainment has announced it is to bring its hugely popular Pro Evolution Soccer series to iPhone and iPod touch, with PES 2010 set to arrive in June.

Already a massive success on home gaming systems, the iPhone/iPod touch version has been created by Konami's Parisian development studio and has been designed to set new standards for the football genre on these devices. PES 2010 will centre on stunning 3D visuals to recreate the intensity of match-day action and will use a variety of all-new, innovative control interfaces.

The Pro Evolution Soccer series is renowned for its intuitive and realistic gameplay, and stunning AI and physics routines. PES 2010 for iPhone and iPod touch will share such elements, ensuring all the slick passing, first-time shots, and mazy runs that the existing versions enjoy are faithfully recreated. Similarly, this new handheld version of PES 2010 will also include key game modes, including UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League elements.

"To bring a game as complex and as playable as PES 2010 to iPhone and iPod touch has been a daunting challenge, but one that has paid off," commented Axel de Rougé, Producer of PES 2010 for iPhone/iPod touch, for Konami Digital Entertainment. "We have been working to ensure that all the slick moves and control - not to mention strong AI and aesthetic touches - that are associated with the series, have been recreated. We are confident we have produced the best football game available for the Apple systems, and look forward to its reception in June."

PES 2010 for iPhone and iPod touch follows Konami's well-received iPES app for the format. iPES - The Fan App offers a series of challenges and tests based on elements in the PES series, but PES 2010 will mark the eagerly awaited football series' first full debut on iPhone and iPod touch.

PES 2010 will be released for iPhone and iPod touch in June.
