The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

Hopefully as it's christmas they'll mark it down as GIFT. ;)

Doesn't matter with yesasia.com, everything is guaranteed tax-free to the UK and free shipping as well. Apparently they have an 'arrangement' with the UK (!)

It's great! My Studio Ghibli limited edition boxset sailed through customs :D

I have 2 reserved at different electronics shops, both value packs. Probably keep one, and either sell the other or give it to the friend that begs the most :p Ridge Racers, MG Ac!d, Minna, and Lumines will be bought. I'll probably buy a 512 MB MS Duo shortly after for movies and music.

What's the status of that Talkman software, I was really looking forward to that too, but haven't heard anything on it in a while.

I can't wait for this to come out in the US. I'm going to make so much money on ebay!!!
Brings back memories of when the ps2 came out.

i must admit, as a nintendo fanboy, i'm tempted by PSP.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy, but I want to side with originality so I like DS (well.. not that Ninty have handled that well so far), but just looking at this:

Holy shit. I want it and the only game I'm interested in is Lumines. This is how you know Sony have got it right.

It's people like you that make me glad I shop online.

Just needs a GTA: SA for PSP and it is all over for Nintendo sadly... I still love my DS

October 2005.

Rockstar won't have a new PS2 GTA for next Christmas...but you'd better believe they'll have a PSP version.

I don't think GTA is possible without very serious compromises. Not much RAM, and streaming audio/textures will kill the system's battery life. So that means a very small city, and not much choice for radio stations.

Rockstar North can't (or doesn't) design their own engines either. Until somebody makes middleware for PSP, they probably won't get started. A 2005 release for GTA-PSP seems very unlikely.

I thought it had 32MB, same as PS2 now? And I'd expect renderware to be on the case already. Having an openGL based setup, a port wouldn't take too long.

Personally I very much doubt that - at least based on what I know of battery behaviour so far.

Nobody spotted this yet?

Either Fafalada means the battery life is pretty good, or that its shit no matter how few polys you push.

PSP has only half of the video RAM (2mb), right? I guess that wouldn't necessarily mean smaller cities, just lots and lots of repeating textures...

Now that EA owns Criterion, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that they will be able to make new Renderware products for competitors.

Don't know about the amounts. But even with half, the screen is smaller, and there are other elements that are designed to boost performance. So while ports might be difficult, graphics by a good developer should be on a par with PS2.

The textures still come from main memory, just that with 2MB you can't store as many at a time, so you need to use them and get the next bunch in quickly.

Now that EA owns Criterion, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that they will be able to make new Renderware products for competitors.

I'd expect them to leave criterion alone. EA don't actually use renderware, they use a lot of their small children in Vietnam to do engine work, then reuse that. So there is no commerical advantage in holding back on renderware development. In fact I imagine its a good earner for EA.

There's a pretty massive commercial advantage in holding back Renderware....it cripples less competent developers just as new generations of hardware are arriving. They are forced to spend more....and EA wins in any kind of spending war.

Will there be a way for audio playback w/ the screen off (to save power)?

Ridge Racers, Lumines, Vampire Saviour, Metal Gear Acid = PSP sold!!

The joys of being platform agnostic. :D

I really like the DS too. I wasn't really sold on it, but my brother picked it up and I've been enjoying it.

I believe there is. I remember reading something about this a few months back.

A SHITLOAD OF INFORMATION
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for providing all the information in one neat and tidy package. Your thread has become an excellent source for finding out all I need for my PSP launch plans.

Lumines and Ridge Racers are definite purchases for me! I'm not sold on any of the other titles but I just need more info on them, that's all. I'll probably bite the bullet and do it in Febuary in anticipation for launch.

I must agree that although I love my Nintendo DS, that interface is so sexy that it's just begging for my money. But an interface will hardly prove to me that PSP has better games ;)

Can someone also post the size-comparison pictures, showing how big it is in relation to DS, Gameboy, etc?

I didn't make this picture, but this was posted in another thread.

Rockstar is working on games for PSP, but I highly doubt it'll be a GTA in the traditional sense we've become used to. It utilizes some pretty intensive streaming techniques that'll essentially rape the battery life to be unusable (without some kind of kryptonite powered nuclear battery or something). I think it's more likely we'll see a more graphical intensive 2D version of GTA. That'd be a bit easier on the system.

This thing is so damn sexy. But I will wait for the US Launch.

Is MGS Acid a launch title in the US too?

I'm waiting for the US launch too. As for what will launch with the US system, we honestly don't know anything about that yet. Expect an announcement shortly after New Years.

Good question.

*blush*

I actually have a really great time digging up information and archiving it to put into a post, believe it or not. I learn a lot and at the same time I make a thread that is informative and that people can gain insight from.

But yeah, when the US systems come... Lumines and Ridge Racers it is for me.

Someone posted this on the ignds boards. Supposed to be actual size. They seemed to measure up with a tap measure.

Wow...it looks like PSP isn't much bigger than an NGS. I was expecting a much more pronounced different. Does anyone know the exact dimensions of an NDS and a PSP? It's also cool to see that Sony is making a D-pad for adult thumbs ;)

I wasn't considering a PSP purchase until the news about watching movies on a memory stick. That sounds pretty cool.

I don't really want to buy it at launch, but I worry that unless I do then I won't be able to get one for months and months.

DS (when closed): 148.7 millimeters (5.85 inches) wide, 84.7 millimeters (3.33 inches) long, 28.9 millimeters (1.13 inches) tall

PSP: Approxately 170mm (L) x 74mm (W) x 23mm (D)

So the PSP is only 2 centimeters (~22mm) wider than DS? That doesn't seem right....it looks a little bigger than that.

I was thinking the other day that I don't know anyone in Japan who hasn't had a Sony employee blab the battery specs to them. Sony really needs to hire better ninjas.

And I wish Hudson had just cut the multiplayer from Rengoku and released it for launch.

A lot of people are surprised that the PSP is much smaller than they imagined.

Really? I always thought of it as the other way around myself. Err rather, I thought the DS was much bigger than the PSP, but it really isn't. I think the weight is substantial though, I don't remember where I saw those numbers.

On the other hand, if EA puts out PSP Renderware and everyone uses it, that means they make money off of their competitor's games as well as their own, so they win that way, too.

I think EA probably benefits more from the entire market expanding versus putting everyone else out of business, personally.

Back to the topic of PSPs...I have one preordered at Play Asia but not too optimistic about actually receiving it (for a reasonable price, anyway)...anyone know when jp.playstation.com will reopen preorders for the second shipment? I missed out when they opened them the first time - and I forgot that I still have a jp.playstation.com account from when I ordered PS2 launch machines :) (For anyone else interested in doing this - you need to have a friend in Japan to receive the machine for you, as they won't ship internationally.)

Heh, the DS shows its size in its thickness over the PSP. That's really a dramatic difference when the system is closed, at least it seems more dramatic.

PSP is actually very small. I think that big screen taking like 90% of the PSP shape is what leads to believe the system is bigger than it actually is.

Here's a much better pic that I measured up to be actual size. That is if your monitor is at 1024x768

Length 170mm =6.69in
Height 74mm =2.91in
width 23mm = .90in
diagonal screen measurement 4.3in

Shit...All the lucky ones that can get one at launch:
I hope you do great posts with impressions, videos and music about the games !!! (specially you Maskrider)
