Embarrasing and ambitious is better than perfect but boring. The Cool will still be listenable in a few years. Graduation prolly wont. I didnt hate graduation but it was a fairly predictable rap/pop album without a lot of substance.
The Cool grows on me.
sure "dumb it down" has some cringe-worthy lines, but the album has some subtle and clever things going on that I can really sink my teeth into.
I wouldn't say it was ambitious. The production felt by-the-numbers to me, and the lyrics were trite, while both often made me cringe. And anything Lupe ever did for The Cool that I could appreciate he had done before in Food and Liquor.

not the actual instrumental, more like someone messing around with the ending part of the song and looping it....and someone playing the piano at the beginning.

I'm not a Kanye fan but I thought The Graduation was better than his previous album, which is to me so forgettable that I don't even know the name? Late Registration? Anyway, Kanye lyrically is pretty weak, except for a few tracks off of his first album back when he actually gave a fuck. Now he just goes through the motions. His 2nd album had a lot of filler but The Graduation tried to be a little more ambitious and I thought it worked just enough to make it better than his 2005 album but no College Dropout by any means.

Autotune sucks but it is the "in" thing now and Kanye probably doesn't know how to sing. You got to play the cards you're dealt. Like all other singers who can't sing, you turn to the autotune to help you out.

Love Lockdown - UGH.

Heartless - Super shit quality on the video, but sounds like it could be better.

I'll keep my opinion undecided for now, but I'm not exactly gonna be waiting with baited breath.

He's not a singer though, se he can just not sing.

The auto-tune doesn't sound so prevalent in the live version compared to the studio version. But there is lots of background noise and I'm listening to it on my shitty headphones.:D

Kanye is completely overhauling Love Lockdown. He went back and re-recorded his singing and is changing the drums. His words:

"Your prayers have been answered!! There's a new version of love Love Lockdown coming. We used new taiko drums and I re-sung it... it's being Mastered now...."

According to a call in to BET, the album should be done in 2 weeks.

Well I just read the entire thread. I guess I'm in like the 5% of people in here that actually like "Love Lockdown" (or at least as it stands now). You all keep arguing about him singing or not being a good rapper or whatever. What I have always loved about Kanye is that he keeps his sound fresh and seems to differentiate himself from what else is currently out there (in popular, mainstream hip-hop/rap/whatever).

I did notice he used that stupid voice filter on this track though. I was skeptical upon first listen, but once those tribal drums kicked in I was sold. Those drums are awesome! I really like that he uses them sparingly throughout the track.

Anyway, I'm excited for the new album!

New version was put on the blog. Chorus sounds way better and the taiko drums sound awesome.
sounds way better. i really like that song. even though hes not rapping, at least he is trying to spread himself out and grow. He always has unique songs IMO and ive never been too big of a fan.

Finally he adds some more drums to the outro. Much better quality. Is he gonna say the original version was just a demo? because that's what it sounds like in comparison to this.

This latest version is the first time I was able to sit through the entire thing and not go to the live version :lol

Still room for improvement though. This coming from a Kanye fan.

Why are you comparing his debut to last year? If you asked me for albums better than Graduation, I could give you a long grocery list's worth.

The new revised version is a shitload better, but the live version is still king. He should offer both on the cd.

Well, to name a few...

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Dalek - Abandoned Language

And the new version of that track is still horrendous.

I'm feeling both versions... Really like some of the changes he made to the revised version though, it has a more mellow feel that ramps up once the drums kick in the middle of the song...

It's gonna be hard to get around Manhattan without hearing someone bumping this for a few weeks... :D

As long as that effect is on his voice, it's garbage. Simple. If they stripped that the actual melody is fine, and the chorus has power.

What's wrong with using that effect in a song? Is it overused? I love it in this song.

Of course, I'm a fan of the effect in general. It absolutely IS overused, but when it's used in a song like this, it works great.

But yeah, this version is definitely better. Vocals could use a little more work. Not the effect, but it still sounds like a demo.

But the new drums are fucking awesome. And I like the new effect when he says "system overload".

It just distracts from it for me. It goes from being a song that could potentially be interesting and somewhat fresh sounding to just being a template for a couple of dance remixes. I can't take the song seriously. I'd rather hear Kanye sing poorly than be aided by that thing.

I understand that.

And it really is overused. It's hard to deny that.

Is there a direct download of the new version or is it just streaming from his blog?
