The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I take it people don't play with a high level of film grain?

I had it pumped to maximum and it seemed to get really disorienting when things go bad. Am I just a noob, or is it easier when you turn it down? I've just turned it down to default and am thinking it should make things easier to play.

Louis is the man, and I will always play as him if given the choice or chance.

Well, the good thing is, is that every character is pretty likable. Some good voice acting and some great lines in this game.

Oh yeah, big time. PC version feels/looks great... 360 version, not so much.

So I played both demos.

Two things: PC >>>> 360 version by like a million.

And advanced difficulty is definitely the way to play. Normal = much to easy, at least on the level in the demo. Playing on advanced and seeing the shit hit the fan in the room before the last safe room was amazing.

That's pretty much their MO.

I just took down my first on Advanced. Took 1 pipe bomb pretty much up her ass, then 2 molotovs as I ran, then 1 she just ran through, and a shit ton of auto shotty shots, and she got me down and almost killed me.

Fucking brutal.

Witches aren't that bad imo, you can prepare for them if you need to fight them unlike other infected. Sure I'll avoid them if I have the chance, but they're no tank in terms of difficulty.

When me and my friends have to fight one, we all aim at her then count down and all start firing at once. Usually take her down before she gets to us. This is on expert.

As a videophile I don't want to see any fucking artificial film grain in my films, and especially not my games. First thing I did was turn it to 0. oh, and BTW, Valve am gods. The shooting feels o awesome, instanly you can blow off heads without a hitch. Buying it day 1 based on the demo.

What do the witches do? Everytime I've disturbed one it just ran up and pinned me down and murdered me.

Yeah your supposed to avoid them we had one genius on our team today just before the last section of the demo as we were crossing that dark area with the pillars who thought it would be a good idea to walk over to her. Even though we told him to leave her alone as we were low on health.

He disturbed her she pounced and we left him to his fate.

HOLY SHIT I JUST PLAYED WITH CHEATS ON

HOLY SHIT

Dammit GAF, I don't know which version to get now. This ran really well on my laptop and those cheats made the game so much more fun but I still prefer Xbox Live over Steam.

I'm probably just going to end up with both versions.

But do you think L4D has a chance to usurp Gears 2 on the XBL most played list? That's kinda what I'm implying.

Is gears2 really the most played? Takes 10 minutes every time I want to find a game then dumps me back on my ass after the win to do a search for another 10 minutes.

In a fair world L4D would take the top spot, it's definitely good enough to do it. The only thing in its way is the XBL demographic :D

I agree, it seems witches are made out to be a bit worse than they really are. Granted, if you're in a bad situation to begin with when someone disturbs her,
then yeah, you're knee deep in shit river. Prepared, though, a team can take her out without too much peril.

All depends on the situation, but there's no way a witch could be compared to a tank. No. Way.

advanced is much too easy, you can take 10+ hits from zombies or teammates before going down.

Expert is also easy with a good team, as I experienced last night. Expert can be difficult with a less experienced team.

There needs to be another difficulty level above expert. Maybe even 2.

Epic - 2 hits knocks you down

Apocalyptic - 2 hits knocks you down, zombies take no damage from melee and 1 damage from any non-head shots (still knocked back for both).

I know server operators can tweak settings to make it super hard on the PC version, but i'd still like to see more official difficulty levels.
I like these ideas, apocalyptic is a bit much. Having to do headshots all the time isn't really going to fly when swarmed by assloads of zombies. It's supposed to be hectic.

I don't know the stats, actually. I'm just making the analogy Halo 3 : COD4 :: Gears 2 : L4D.

Whoa, whoa The 360 version is pretty good.

I've got both versions but will be getting it on PC as my machine can run it with everything on high plus the mods are going to be excellent.

But the 360 is no slouch in the visuals department.

Will this demo be only downloadable FROM Steam, or will other places also get the demo available for download?

I'm hopinh to et it from work, but it needs to be of a certain ISP's free download list.

This is mainly a high profile PC title. There will be nothing but console shitting going on this entire thread. Get use to it.

For what it's worth I have a PC capable of playing it pretty well but the decision will come down to Xbox version or not at all.

Technically steam only. But if you could find some place where someone made a backup copy and put it up, you could download it from there.... good luck with that though.

To be fair, the thread started out pretty well with regards to the 360 version.

And may I ask why you're not considering the PC version? Are most of your gaming friends on 360?

Great stuff, I was surprised to beat Expert for my first playthrough though. I am assuming there will be some tweaks. If you can aim, you'll really be a hero for your team.

Day one.

About goddamn time valve added triple buffering to a game. And why the hell wasn't it enabled by default? This should be on every damn game for PC.

Pretty much. I prefer the community of Live over the PC experience despite its level of racists and kids although I have a feeling this game will attract slightly less of each than is typical for Xbox Live.

Make sure you actually did expert. Sometimes the server you join won't be the difficulty you pick.

Fair enough. I'm only considering double-dipped on the 360 for a similar reason -- not "the community," but my real-life friends and just a few online buddies. My community experience on the PC has been amazingly fun though. PC-GAF is a great bunch. But I already knew that with TF2. :)

From the way some people are going you would thing the 360 version looks like utter crap which is not the case.:lol

None the less i shall be getting this on PC as i have already paid it off and also have a machine that can run everything on the highest settings.

So uhhh....guys....do you have any fucking clue how incredibly popular this thing is?

And right now, there are nearly 15,000 people playing it, even though there is so much bandwidth still being used for downloads.

15,000 is nothing. I wonder how high the number is going to get tonight. Overall I bet more people are going to download the demo through Live than Steam.

Nothing wrong with that. Definitely a slightly older crowd which is invariably an improvement in any community.

how can i change the resolution on the demo before launching it? apparently it's defaulting to something too high for my 1280x1024 LCD and won't display anything...

:lol 15k is a shitload, especially getting them all concurrently.

That's more people than playing TF2 by 50%.

If they can hold up at least like 10-15k player numbers in the demo, I can't wait to see what the final game will get in terms of player numbers.

pc version here. I'm playing at 1680x1050 with everything set to max. game looks a generation ahead of those 360 shots. it's almost like comparing the wii and 360 versions of quantum of solace.

I doubt it. A few people I know who are XBL junkies feel like L4D is too shallow to get alot of people playing it for long. When I played the demo I thought it was fun, yet I did wonder about the staying power. I am going to buy the game, yet I do have reservations about how long I will play it until I get bored. Maybe the final game will ease my fears.

I'm playing at that res too with 4XAA and it runs at 60fps (C2D E6600 and a Geforce 9800GT). It's fucking sweet.

you sure, the demo lasts 10mins but I have played it for 6 hours so far and lots of people played it for even longer

Almost everyone I know has logged over 5 hours on it.

I find it funny people talking about staying power, yet will happily play the same three maps in a Halo or CoD for hours on end.

Maybe digging around in some config files? Otherwise you could enable gpu scaling and force your resolution, that way you can see the games menu and set the proper resolution. GPU scaling is an option in both nvidia and ati control panels.

edit: There should be 2 files called video.txt and videodefaults.txt located in 'C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead demo\left4dead\cfg\', try changing the resolution on one of those.
