The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Yeah it's fantastic so far, I just found out you can jump off the back of the starting area and run straight into the back alley from the get go and completely rush through the first area in like less than a minute even on expert. It's been said over and over but it's true, every run through feels unique but I think once you've played it a few times you can start to predict things like when there will be a rush, the placement of witches & tanks and things like that. Also I soooo wish there was more to do, it starts to feel a bit hollow when you've beaten it 3 times in a row and all you can say is "let's do it again!" but maybe change a few little things or hope the director throws something wildly different at you like, but I guess that's the point of the demo, to leave you wanting more and it definitely has done that for me. Can't wait for the full release.

Heh, got splitscreen working with KBM and 360 pad thanks to that guide and it's pretty sweet. Would be awesome if it worked on dual monitors also :P

How to install this demo?
When I click on the 'Install Demo' button in the steam window, it just reloads the page.

My friend had the same issue. Go to "Activate product on steam" from one of the menus at the top.

And the Subway, but that's it.
And the subway is part 2 of that series right? It loads after the first safe house, correct?

I read these campaigns are supposed to be around 4 hours each or something. Yet, from what I can tell it takes about 20 min to go through the demo. The demo is 1/2 of a campaign correct (2 out of 4 areas)? My view of "campaigns" and "areas" could be incorrect though.

It's 2/5 areas. I could totally see each of these campaigns taking 4 hours on expert.

I know that quantity is not quality, but...

One questions:

We see that Apartment and Subway are 2 levels out of five. Are these complete? I mean the one in the demo are the entire levels we will have in final version?

I'm pretty sure these are the final versions, but if you're concerned about length you should go watch full playthroughs that show the remaining 3 levels... the rest of the No Mercy Campaign is pretty big.

If you consider this is just 2 levels out of 25 total, there's gonna be a lot of content at release.

i am told that the subway level is cut in half and that the safe room we see in the demo isn't there in the full version.

From who? They've gotta be shitting you.

I haven't even been able to make it to the damn end in expert mode from the safe room. Getting through the subway straight from the roof is going to be nigh impossible. :lol

noclip

You can check out the rest of the map. You have to leave the building and cross another street before the map actual ends.

Playing the same level over and over will do that.
also bear in mind that this isn't even 2/5ths of the full No Mercy campaign and that the end is a lot harder than the beginning.

two tanks at once

you misunderstood me. the demo has TWO levels. the first one on the streets, the second in the subway. the streets level is the same as the retail version. the subway level is half of the second level from the retail version.

the safe room at the subway entrance isn't the one that isn't in the full version.

Played last night with some Gaffers and other randoms. My neighbor popped in and we played splitscreen online for a while last night, too - very cool of Valve to include that in the demo. Definitely looking forward to the full release. :D

Oh I see. You're talking about the second one on
the second floor of the warehouse
?

That's still ridiculous. I think people can attest here that getting through the subway area, just from the descent through the tunnels, is insanely hard on expert.

The impending pant-soiling has me somewhat excited, however. :lol

Still no code, Gamestop has failed me! (pre-ordered early wednesday morning BTW).

I did the website trick last night as well (on a different email address).

the developers say they can't reliably get everyone to the helecopter playing expert. it wouldn't be very replayable if expert wasn't really really hard.

So we're actually getting 1.5 maps in the demo? Valve should be more explicit about the size of the demo compared to the full version. I would imagine potential customers would need less convincing to buy the game then. At least I know I would if I didn't pre-order already.

So I just want to point out my feelings on the difficulty levels.

It seems like many people on here are passing up all difficulties other than expert, but I have yet to win a full match on expert.
Usually, though, these failed attempts don't feel so much like failures. Rather, they encouraged me to try it again, and do it better this time.

Advanced, on the other hand, is what I would consider to be "normal". Each time I've tried it, we only wiped maybe once, if ever.
The match still had challenging points, but they never seemed as dire as in expert. This is also really enjoyable, since you
can look forward to the satisfaction of actually winning :)

My biggest gameplay complaint so far comes from the Tanks.
Sweet mother of Moses, those guys are unfairly hard. It would be fair if they took their weight in lead to bring down,
it would be fair if they could move faster than the survivors could run, and it would be fair if they could throw chunks of earth further
than I can throw a newborn baby. But it's an entirely different cookie when they have all of these attributes an abilities. Am I missing something?
Do I suck? Tanks on expert are, as far as I can tell, a death sentence.

Anyway, enjoying the demo, and really looking forward to the full game, and the chance to play as the infected!

Yeah I'm not a fan of the tanks either. I hope you're playing the PC version, cause as soon as this game launches there'll probably be serverside mods that remove tanks from the game.

Played the demo yesterday. I'm REALLY thinking that left 4 dead will be one of those games that's amazing when you first play, but get tired of after a good 2 weeks or so from playing. At least that's the feeling I got from playing the demo. Is there going to be some time of SDK included with the game?

I am. I'd hate to see them removed altogether, cause they are a cool idea. They could be a nice change of pace from all the others
which die easily, but pose a pretty serious threat. I feel like if they couldn't run quite as fast as survivors they would be perfectly fair.

We shall see :)

The director can be so cheap, he placed a witch right where the that gun turret is, near the end, so we had to fight her. After that we were all just too hurt and died after we flipped the switch :S

I'm enjoying the demo so much I can't imagine how many hours I'll waste on the full game...

he put a witch at the top of the stairs on the way up to the warehouse basement in a game yesterday. i think it's fun when the witch is somewhere unavoidable especially since it's pretty uncommon.

Yeah, I was just going there to get a health pack and she just jumped at me out of nowhere, scary as fuck.

It seems like the director does this if you haven't had much difficulty yet, almost to say "Oh, you think this is easy? Have fun!"

yeah ive seen the witch by the mini-gun a couple times, and also right off the end of the subway train, making her pretty much unavoidable. Still i'd rather take on a witch than a tank, those guys just don't go down....

As cool as campaign is, I think versus mode is going to be the real draw.

When you have everything which is included in the campaign, but with 4 more humans who can take the place of boss infected roaming around the maps. Between this and the way the AI director handles enemy placement in levels, I really don't see this game ever getting old.

Mods and conversions and extra content on PC will be icing on the cake.

That's ok, he threw one right in the middle of the stupid subway car, the one you HAVE to pass through to get to the next part, and I was playing by myself and it one hit killed me. Curse you director!!!!

The Director works in the same way many of us would. Trick people into thinking all is fun and easy, then drop an uber boss and watch everyone die. :lol

Why all of the Tank hate? I think they are great because it makes the team change their tactics and have to focus on one bad-ass target. Tank's are the only boss monsters that make me panic when I see them charging towards me. :D
