The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Just ran out and got GoW2 and L4D from Gamestop after hearing that Amazon was sold out of the 360 version...

...CAN'T TAKE ANY CHANCES!

My friend makes the same grips about L4D's controls being too floaty and controlling like it was a game made 10 years ago.

I want it to run Starcraft II and L4D on max settings with a solid framerate (over 60fps).
How much does that cost? I'm willing to spend $800 on it.

What resolution do you game at.

I think this goes without saying. When I was a huge CS nut I scoffed @ the Xbox version but ended up playing it just because that's what my friends were getting. Same thing for me with Left 4 Dead--I'd much rather play it on a PC for the better overall community and inevitable mods but all my friends are strictly 360, so that's where I'm playing as well. Not only that, I don't even have a serviceable PC @ home currently, and even if I did, I wouldn't have the time to play online like I used to with CS (was pulling about 7 hours a day at one point for an entire summer) so 360 version is perfect for me since it will be in short bursts and only with a few friends.

But I do long to see it on a good PC. And to play it with a mouse & kb.

I was thinking of getting it to X360 to be able to play with friends too, but the guy I mainly play with didn't like it too much, just like me. So I'm gonna go with the PC version and play with people from GAF I think.

Well, lately I've started playing a lot more on the PC since I got a new PC. I still prefer the matchmaking system of COD4 on X360 to the typical PC FPS list of rooms, though :)
You have much to learn. :P

I built my computer this Fall, and I don't plan to upgrade until 2010 either. Late 2010, or even 2011 or 2012, depending on what the situation is with technology. Most new games coming out aren't pushing the limits. Valve and Blizzard are known for their reasonable system requirements.

If it's US$800 you can get a very capable system.

= $714 (not considering mail-in rebates, or combo discounts, could be less if you get those)

That assumes you have a monitor around or something. You can get $10 keyboards and mice as well, and those are usually good if you get Logitech or Microsoft ones. There is also a decent $10 Logitech headset I use.

That'll do you good for maxed out gaming at 1680x1050 or lower. I built a very similar system to that but I'm using a 4870 512mb which is ~10-20% faster than the 4850, I get solid 60fps 4xAA triple buffer vsync in Left 4 Dead, everything maxed. I'm sure my framerate would actually be above 60fps avg if I had vsync off, but it's better to have it on to avoid screen tearing. The 4850 should able to handle L4D smoothly no problem, and for $100 less than the 4870.

can't wait to finally play this game. my copy just shipped from amazon yesterday, but won't be here until next week.............bummer

New PC Details

The problem is that I don't have a monitor either. I pretty much use my Powerbook G4 primarily when I'm at school. The old gaming pc I built in 2002 for Warcraft III is at home and in use by my bro. So essentially I'm starting from scratch. I'll probably have to end up spending a grand total since I would like a wide screen 24inch monitor.

24" is monster, I have 22" and it's plenty gigantic enough. Plus 22" monitors are $100+ cheaper.

Well I would like a monitor as big as the one I'm using at work. Work makes the whole thing worse because I'm coding on a monster machine with 2 huge wide screen monitors all day while reading all of the L4D impressions on GAF. :(

Since $1000 is a pretty daunting figure for a college student. Realistically, I'm probably going to buy the PC in parts throughout the next 6 months. Starting with the monitor and ending with the video card because I want to get the stuff that depreciates in value quicker last. The down side to being patient and making my rent payments on time is that I'm going to miss all the L4D launch buzz and Mirror's Edge on the PC. On the plus side, I'll definitely be well equipped for SCII and HL2:E3.

All these impressions of the final game is making it hard to stomach the next few hours of work and homework, but I'll try my hardest to manage.

I need to buy a couple of usb extenders from monoprice so I can use my mouse and keyboard while playing on my 32" LCD TV that sits on the opposite side of the room (I have it wired as a second monitor).

Besides that, does anyone know a reasonably priced stereo headset? I've been using my xbox 360 headset on my pc, but I can't configure it to just have people's talking go through the headset and the audio through the speakers.

I have to see this to believe this, but my friend told me someone did this:

"Also, playing as a tank is a blast. On the last map, the female survivor in our game was running for the chopper and our tank punched her so hard that she flew into the chopper door and out the other side to the street below!"

The writing on the walls in the hospital was hilarious.

The people trying to compete with inflated kill counts (with it ending in 53,633 kills or something and the next guy calling him a liar), people trying to one-up each other with how fast it took to change into a zombie, and "that's vampires, moron."
Hahahaha yeah, and there's a wall with conspiracy theories behind the virus :lol

To the east coast PC l4d'ers- sorry, I got caught up last night.

On the plus side:
It's on this evening for reals
My Sennheiser 595's will be here just in time for zombie slaying

Anyway to play as undead vs the bots?
You might be able to do it with console commands but not through the main UI. Game previews have mentioned that this would be one of the worst ways to practice as the boss zombies since the survivor AI is generally very adept at taking them down on thier own. No stragglers, good raction time, no panicking, etc.

It is the worlds most famous and influential movie. So I don't think it's out of line to bring up when someone uses it completely wrong.

Unless the person was trying to seriously insult Valve?

I saw the post as a serious slam on Valve : P

The really funny thing is, I'm pretty sure the achievement for zombie kills matches this number. :lol

I'll be there around (7 est) or so... I need to figure out why my mic (headset) doen't work right :/

maybe drivers?

I dought it but I'll go looking for them (if they exist)

This game is SO awesome.

Played through the No Mercy campaign on advanced last night with 3 random people and it was tons of fun with 3 of us on mics. We had to retry the final stand 4 times, but on the last time, the guy who was playing Zoey and myself were still alive when the helicopter arrived. I was hanging off of a ledge, and he tried to get me up, but immediately after, I am pounced by a hunter, I think vomited on a boomer, and swarmed by hordes of zombies. I tell him to leave me behind, and he barely gets away, as I see the shot from the helicopter with tons of zombies chasing after the helicopter as it flies away.

Dammit, I don't know how my Computer will handle L4D. It's a bit older now...

I was just going to get the 360 version, but...I don't know :(
I've played both versions. And both play extremely well if you are versed in that kind of shooter. The 360 turn speed is perfectly tuned, your characters are responsive, and the button lay-out is great. You can't really go wrong with either version, unless you require the PC specific advantages, but as for just the game itself, both versions are phenomenal.

I agree. The extent to which that image is used completely wrong is just staggering. It's an angry clap because something he worked for is a complete and embarrassing failure and even then, I know I'm missing nuances that should be stated.

Hm.. do you have 2 sound cards; one on your mainboard and one on a secondary/external card? You might have the wrong one set to the default (in Windows).

Drivers are not likely to be an issue, unless if you're using a USB mic, and I'd be doubtful even then.

Just a guess. PM me if you're still having trouble and maybe we can figure it out.

It's a deluded clap. He honestly thinks she's brilliant, because he sticks his dong in thar.

I'm actually not as angry as that sounded, but it is a miss fire for the image. And it's such a fantastic movie that more people need to see it anyway.

I'm pretty sure he knows she's terrible and is going to have to deal with the fallout. That's the interpretation I took from it and the look of anger seems to prove it, though you could say that was him being angry that she was being heckled.

I'm of the view that he's too self-centered for that and is angry because she has made him look bad.

Edit: Sorry that this is going off topic, but I've been out of school for about 2 years. I missed these kinds of discussions.

It's also the first valve game that shows you your feet when you look down. Everyone has skinny legs.
maybe they'll even let you see your own reflection in the next game! i'm also glad that since TF2 at least Valve have realized that having your character speak isn't the end of the world.

in L4D it helps to always play as the same person though. i get confused when i'm not Louis cause i'm always Louis. I'll be like, why am I asking for health... when it isn't me.

Played on PC last night on advanced No Mercy. Got to the 5th level with 3 other players. We setup the rooftop with the minigun, hit the radio and the horde arrived.

We were doing well until a Tank pops out. Zoey and I fire away but didn't think fast enough to move. Zoey is kicked off the roof then before I could run away I got the boot off the roof too (AAAAAAHHH).

Louis is killed by the Tank leaving Bill alone to kill the Tank. Tank was killed leaving Bill alone on the top of the roof. If Bill could hold on long enough the 3 of us could respawn. On the mic Bill says 'Bring it, bitches' and the AI Director throws all it has and Bill is swarmed by zombies and pinned down by a Hunter.

Awesome.

The thing is this is about as good as a shooters going to get on 360. Mouse and keyboard is always going to be better.

I will play on both :).

Yep, nobody can disagree on this :) but is there any other reason which make the pc version better than the 360 one?

User mods, free updates in the form of maps and weapons from valve, lower price tag, better community, dedicated servers...take your pick

The Mod community. There has already been a mod that allows you to play through Ravenholm.

What the hell? Since when does Evilore use obstacle ads in the reply process? The last thing I expected to see when I clicked reply was a Bomberman ad with a countdown clock!

Anyway....

The mod list is a good idea. Maybe a new thread dedicated to it? I'm too lazy to create it myself. Evident in getting annoyed by having to click "skip ad".

Somebody is making a winter campaign set in Pripyat.

How do I

trigger the end scenario on the hospital rooftop? The helicopter pilot tells me to get ready and call him back, but the option to call him back never comes up. Do I need to do something special - flip a switch, or something?

I'm listening to the developer commentary, if that makes a difference. If this is the only level available for the commentary, then they didn't give any sign that it was over - no "thanks for listening" or anything of the sort. Maybe I need to finish the level in-game before I can trigger the sequence in the dev commentary?

But it doesn't have my friend playing it with me ... so 360 for me.

I didnt realize you could move cars as a tank. I accidently presed the LMB and the car went flying into the 4 survivors killing them. Got a achievement too.
