The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Don't know if it's just my connection, but twice now I've started to lag a lot -- getting the "reconnecting" screen up over and over again as soon as I've reached the second chapter in the airport campaign.

You probably just have a really high ping on that server. When I get stuck in that rut (which isn't often, but it happens), I just open the console and type "openserverbrowser" to pick a server with a low ping and get going.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I was in the settings and saw that a beta of the Steam Client was available and clicked on it. Steam loads a lot faster with this. It was taking 30 seconds under the old one and now it's like 1 second. I approve.

Anybody experiencing connection errors? I've been able to join games fine today and play for a good while and then out of nowhere I get a connection problem. I don't experience lag or anything and I've tested my connection to make sure. It isn't my firewall since I can connect to games and play (I played all day yesterday without problems) but it seems that no matter what game I play now, somewhere down the line I get a connection error and get disconnected from that server.

Holy shit! Steam is super fast with this beta client. All of the tabs used to take 30~ish seconds to load. They're instant now.

Holy shit! Thanks! I can't believe how fast everything loads now.

But it is beta! What will you do, after it swallows your games???
Time to try it out.

I will also start up an expert run later after a round of versus. So whoever wants a night full of fail is allowed to join. :D

It's about 6 seconds to login and get to the games tab, and it takes about 7-8 megabytes while minimized in Vista. Does seem faster than before, maybe. Go Valve!

I love this game, but only got one question...

Why does the Boomer look like Zombie John Goodman?

From a Eurogamer live interview with one of the writers at Valve about L4D:

wilsonwiz asks: Have you any idea when the Source Development Kit will be released?

Chet Faliszek: Shortly. I know we are working on it and want it out as soon as possible. I really think this is a game that brings back that urge to make maps like Doom did back in its day. You want to make your place of work and unleash the zombie apocalypse on it. When we release the SDK we will also be releasing tutorials for level makers, from newbies who have never used hammer to experienced mappers.

So awesome.

He also said this about why only 2 maps are open for Versus, confirming some suspicions:

Gamma asks: I'm sure a lot of people have been wondering this, but why can only No Mercy and Blood Harvest be played in Versus?

Chet Faliszek: Versus maps, while appearing near the same, are actually different versions of the maps. So for L4D we shipped with a total of 30 maps. The versus maps have to be split off so we can playtest and adjust them specifically.

In co-op, a section that is hard for Infected is easy for the survivors, it isn't unfair, it's just how that map plays. In versus, though, it becomes unfair, or just isn't fun for the Infected.

It certainly makes sense. If No Mercy, for example hadn't been changed, any human infected who spawned at the elevator floor would have been stranded (There's poles one can climb to get up the elevator shaft in the versus version).

i do slate the game an awful lot for its solitary? flaw, which is the matchmaking is utterly abysmal, but its certainly the best fps game released this year, even better than my favourite shooter series crysis warhead/wars, although if quakelive had released this year it would be a different story

please fix the online backend...quickly

The rooftop layout has also been changed a bit, the stairs behind the minigun is now outside for instance.

Does anyone else have some problems with objects and enemies "fading in"?

Here are my specs:
2GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8800
Pentium 4 Processor (3.20 mhz)

Other than that, it runs perfectly.

i wish it would be possible to play versus only as infected. so much fun :D

Well, you technically could with 7 players, and people that would be fine to switch back to human and the humans switch back to infected.

Yup, the roof is also only one story now (probably done because that's difficult for infected to reach quickly).

Shit! I had to leave the GAF game... But I recorded demos from start to my quitting!

Campaign: No Mercy
Difficulty: ?
Gamemode: Versus
Playercount: 7-8
Tut: type playdemo gafgame(_#) in the console and enjoy the match we just had. Shift F2 for Demo UI and see lots of options.

If any of you want to make a fancy vid, be my guest. I would if I had the time.

ya hopefully they add a way to stay infected. I feel bad leaving servers after my round as zombie is up

Why are you doing it then? Playing as Survivor is more intense than the normal coop experience and you are back as an Infected in no time anyway. Probably even faster than leaving and joining a new game.

Hmm interesting. But how different will it be compared to the stuff on Valve Developer Community page?

That behavior is annoying, but you're right; the two experiences are so different and appealing in fundamental ways that forcing people to do both is just asking for horseshit like this. Playing as the infected is pretty damn fun, and doesn't need to be shoehorned into a competitive structure. I'd be happy to do a regular campaign with human controlled bosses.

Who cares if it wouldn't be remotely balanced? Most of the fun of the game is from playing well and still getting wiped out.

Skipped the last few pages, so I have no idea if it's been suggested, but Valve should just release an "Infected Campaign" dlc/patch.

That way you can have AI survivors going through the game as normal and player Infected (with the same boss rotation from VS) trying to stop them.

edit:
Yea, this:

That really is the only thing truly "missing" from the game right now. I was actually kinda confused the first time it switched teams, because I hadn't read up on the Versus mode and just assumed that it was an always-Infected team trying to stop an always-Survivor team.

It is less about making it competive and more about evening the population out. It is harder to finish a level in VS and to avoid frustration, players would just play normal coop while you would have hundreds of players, who want to play infected sitting around, because they don't have any human survivors to play with.

Honestly....that would just be boring. If there are AI controlled Survivors I ignore them and if there are not enough human Survivors left on the server I leave to. There are not many options with the infected gameplay and griefing the other side is half the fun. :D

Just got the game from steam today, awfully overprised, but hell if I could help myself, even though I got an ordered copy arriving on monday. Guess I gotta try and sell that one on.

But I gotta say I'm completely in love with this game, We spent around 6 hours maiming through the no mercy campaign tonight, but hell, we couldn't complete the last mission no matter how many times we tried.
Admittedly we suck, we got one decent fps:er and one average (me) and then a semi-rookie (too upset about minor details to play good)
Then we got one AI which we use for cannon fodder.

But I have to ask, is the last mission on no mercy difficult on advanced or is there a trick to it?

Man I had the most awesome game just now. In the first chapter on the roof, everything went pretty smooth. But as time passed we got hammered pretty bad. In the end the chopper arrives and one of us almost jumps in immediately. Me and the other two guys were still in the house/on the roof, so we start running and screaming to go for it, every man for himself :lol. This guy walking in front of me gets grabbed by a Hunter, but luckily for him I am right behind him to help him. Then this huge horde of zombies arrives and I'm smashing them all away from the fallen one who needs help to get up. The fourth guy finally shows up again (don't know what he was doing), but he killed the zombies from the roof so I could help the guy get up. Then we run for the chopper, but the fourth guy gets swarmed. We jump in and watched the show. He managed to fight himself downstairs, in the middle he gets hurt so he can't run anymore, at one moment he gives up fighting and just moves towards us, this huge horde following him (including tank). He barely made it, but it was so awesome, just like a movie :D. If he was one second too late, he would have died.

The finale of the second campaign was awesome too. In the end two guys ended up dead, and the other two, including me, run for the boat. I was out of ammo and the dead guys were screaming and yelling, warning me for all the dangers that were coming. The boat arrives and I want to jump in, but I can't somehow. Then I see the ladder, but it was already too late. A true epic fail, I got killed and everyone enjoyed it :lol.

Wow, this game is amazing. I just got it today, though I've mainly been in versus the entire time, playing the Infected is just fun as hell.
