I was in a game yesterday where we played the entire No Mercy campaign and had a nice lead going into final stage. We were quickly killed and, as infected, we just could not get anything going.

As the helicopter was about to take off, we managed to incapacitate a single player. Them only getting a *3 multiplier suddenly meant we had a chance of holding the lead. I think we lost the total campaign by 8 points.

Had a tug of war in one game for some 20 points. Best game I've had so far.

Mmh I was wondering, if I buy the Asian version of l4d, will I have issues downloading the DLC for it (if there is any... seeing of they managed for Orange box *facepalm*) ?

Hrm yea you might try going back to 178.24, thats what im running and Im able to run the game 1600x1000 w/ 4X AA / 4X anisotropic / vsync off (100hz refresh / CRT) and everything on high with an AND X2 4800+ / 2gb / 7800 GTX 512mb, it occasionally dips into the high 20's but overall very playable.

Having the flashlight on seems to cause the biggest performance hit but I have a new GTX 260 card on the way so we'll see what kind of boost I get, L4D is very CPU dependant tho.

p.s. if you bring down the dev console and type in cl_showfps 2 it'l enable an FPS counter:

Cool, thanks.

It won't cause issues reinstalling older firmware over the 180.48 I'm running now, will it? Or do I need to uninstall the current firmware first?

I've just thought of a crazy theory. I don't believe in coincidences. So why are 90 percent of my versus games hosted either in Seattle or UK. Is it possible Valve is punishing Friend Only Lobbies with its search algorithm?

Thinking back, it seems the central servers were when I joined a versus match that had permission level set to Public. I wonder if you set up a lobby and had it be Friend Only until it was filled, then switch permission to Public, and then started the game. Would you get a better server location?

Does source hate fire?

I have a pretty powerful machine; a 2.8 ghz core 2 duo. my gpu is an radeon hd 4870. I have 4 gigs of fast ddr3. When molotovs are thrown the fire slows down my game. It's worse if I zoom in on the fire with the hunting rifle. I remember the same thing happened with episode 2. I know source is really cpu bound but, fire?

Does this only happen to me?

No, I have the same problem on my girlfriend's computer. AMD 6600+ and a 320mb 8800 GTS.

No slowdown with fire here, but I'm running with effects set to Medium. I don't notice a difference between High/Medium on that particular setting aside from a major FPS drop. Everything else is set to very high and high, specs are: X2 5000+, HD4670, 4GB RAM.

I had some issues with the fire as well until I enabled Triple Buffering rather than Double. After that, my fps were much more reasonable during the gas station explosion.

I'm going to try that in a few minutes. Coffee and some left 4 dead, anyone?

any DLC announced ?

Not yet that I know of. But I'd bet the first thing that will happen will be the other two campaigns will be made available for Versus mode. Dead Air and Blood Toll I think they're called.

I don't have Nothing Special actually :(

Maybe when I start up the game again later, I earned Barf Bagged once but for some reason didn't get it until the next time I started the game (The picture showed up on the main menu).
Huh, how strange. When I look at your Steam community page, I see it listed.

I don't see it on my page, or notso's or sonic's.

I know we all earned it, because it said it in-game. Grrr.

I picked this up for Xbox over the weekend, and I've been having a blast. Do they disable the mic when you play online? So far no one I've played with talks.
No, if their mics are plugged in its open talk. Must've been a quiet bunch. You can see if the people have mics if the luttle mic icon is filled out.

I can't stand playing with quit people in a game like this :lol Kind of makes any teamwork feel useless since they are just mute back to you like an npc >_> so honestly I only try to play with people that are like me and scream and bitch at every freaking zombie in sight.:lol

I *really really really* hate these custom versus servers.

One server I was on:

-Upped difficulty to the point tank would spawn sometimes seconds after survivors left safe room
-Increased min spawn distance of infected
-Only 3 infected up at once.

So let me get this straight. They up the difficulty, but to counter it they make it harder for the infected players to have fun. Ontop of that the survivors *never* made it even half way through maps, and sometimes would wipe right outside the starting safehouse.

People need to realize versus isn't infected vs survivors. But survivors vs survivors. If the difficulty is so high people *never* get to the end of the map, then you're doing it wrong.

I'm really beginning to like my theory of crap servers for Friend Only games. I've got two friends playing right now. One is in a friend-only server and surprise, surprise. He's on one of the usual UK servers. The other is in a public server and he's on a central server with excellent ping.

EDIT: I'm gonna log in for a couple minutes if anyone on my friend's list wants to test this theory with me. You need at least 2 players to start versus matches (plus with a friend you can go to the overlay and get the server info when loaded.)

Ah. I just hit quick match under campaign; I don't know how their matchmaking algorithm works but I guess it teamed me up with noobs - who are more likely to be mute if Halo 3 is any indicator.

I really like the achievements for this game.

TF2 also has awesome achievements, and that's coming from someone who doesn't really care about them or trophies in general. One of the things that shows that Valve simple gets it is conveyed in their achievements lists both for TF2 and L4D - they're mostly geared towards rewarding teamwork. Contrast them to something like the achievements for Gears 1, which ruined a good number of multiplayer games because people would be gunning for ones like "Kill 100 enemies in ranked matches with ______". Gears 2 changed that up, at least.

Yep, I got all the first batch of achievements for all 3 classes in tf2 without trying. 24 achievements on left 4 dead without trying as well. valve rewards playing well and as a team.

So, my team and I are playing Dead Air and we're just about to the end of the second map. We're running down the walkway when suddenly the music picks up and we hear a Tank growling from the room right next to the safehouse. Suffice it to say, we booked it and slammed the door.

Immediately upon starting the next map, the music picks up and there's a Tank growling outside of the door. :lol

I'm going to start counting the number of times this happens. It might be that whatever "Tank meter" they have to decide when a tank comes carries over between levels, even in Versus.

I've spent the last two hours trying to figure out why I often don't see servers in the server browser (which would explain why I can't find dedicated servers as host.) Bringing up the console was a mass of YELLOW error codes when I played. Seemed like it questioned my User ID and was constantly assigning me new numbers.

The new L4D update seems to have addressed this. When I'm playing, the console is no longer masses of yellow errors. So here's hoping that issue has been addressed.

Having said that, I beginning to understand why there aren't that many good servers. Ran across tons of threads with people who usually run servers and their massive complaints with how Valve is handling this game.

You got the 360 version?

Ya, it's messed up. I see it both ways too. This isn't t he average FPS, where having people come and go constantly can really fuck up a game. Match making tries to make sure you have a good team ready before the game starts. On the other hand waiting around in a damn lobby with no control over your server really bites.

Luckily you can connect to your server directly, or through the browser. They just need to make it more apparent.

Are most of you guys part of the GAF Left 4 Dead group? I'm getting sorta tired of playing with random people that can't communicate in the game :( Wanted to try a few rounds with gaffers later.

I won't be able to play any L4D this week while I'm back home with the family :(

KrawlMan, I have invited random GAFers who were in the [GAF L4D] group chat to play and had fun.

Hey ya'll, can you play local co-op on this?

And is there a combination of local/online co-op? Like... 2 people can sit in one room and 2 people online join? Also ,is local co-op full story mode?

Going home to visit family, was thinking of renting to play with my brother.

Just got done with a versus campaign where Tanks spawned at a freakishly high rate. Really hope Valve is getting flooded with hate mail. But in a filter, please!

When the Nothing Special cheat spreads I expect that .02% percentage to go up alot.

What is that? A hack?

It's a little disappointing that after a week of release, they put out one patch that only fixes an alt-tab crash when there's other obvious problems that should be fixed already. It is possible that there are some stealth fixes not listed in the patch notes to fix some of the exploits but I'm kind of doubting it.

Never happens in Versus. People don't leave the safe room.
I've seen it happen plenty of times, usually to try and help that last person that's getting overrrun with zombies while trying to get to the safe room.

For the 360 version, there is local co-op and you can go online (just bringing a guest like other 360 games).

Hooray!

Director decided to put a Boomer IN the safe room on stage 4 though..no idea how it got avoided/shot and avoided.

Still can not get a Witch in 1 shot though, trying all of the suggestions so far. :(

It was a "it happens so irregual that you can't count on it" never. People need to get to the safe room, a reason to go back out and be low enough to be incapped.
That occurs in like 1 out of like a zombillion games.

Really? Did it again today, someone even got the Witch Hunter achievement. Light out, crouch and in melee range some shotgun love.

I've been trying the more recent suggestion with letting her start standing up in my face, then blow her away with an auto shotty, but it still takes me more than 1 shot; shooting her in the face or shoulders. Oh well.

One method I'd like to try is have two humans still outside the room, one down, and helping up the downed human as a zombie, and maybe that will get a human to come outside of the room, and having another infected get a survivor trying to help the no longer down human get there.

Try the regular shotgun, I know it works with that. In fact I think it's the only gun that is possible.
