I've seen a set of 4 molotovs upstairs in the barn, but it seems 95% of the time you won't get anything. Keep something from level 4.

That was a good run. My death was the stuff of legends. I wish I could have filmed it so you guys could have actually seen what happened. :lol

Played a really fun game with 2 japanese folks and fell last night. The Japanese guys were really polite as they tried their best to speak english through-out the entire match, even though it was really hard to understand them.

I couldn't stop laughing during the farmhouse finale when one of the Japanese players accidentally shot me 'cause he thought I was a zombie. He started screaming like he shot me in real life, apologizing like mad and insisting that he heal me even though I just healed myself and had 80 health. Those guys were probably the best randoms I've played with ever. When Fell accidentally botched a molotov and burned as all alive in a tiny room, they didn't get mad. They just laughed and said it was ok and that "we can do this, don't mind".

;_;

So I decided that I don't like Bill.

When Mila plays Bill, he runs a bunch ahead of everyone, without crouching some times. So all I see is this green figure stumbling around in the dark, with no highlight or name, and I get the urge to shoot him in the back with a pistol like five times. =(

At least stalker may have TKed more people than me!

Fraps... Good as gold.

...but just have as much free HDD space as possible since it's fairly uncompressed... like 4gigs per 2.5minutes worth. OH and expect the framerate to drop by about half (which may be due to the frame rate capture speed as I leave it at 30fps.) But yeah, it captures everything.

Awesome! Thank you.

edit:It was during the final run on No Mercy, which is the hospital level. I was tasked with the job of setting the first tank on fire, because we only had two Molotov. After fending off the first wave, I run to a building towards the left. I notice the tank, as he's climbing up the wall. I fling my Molotov. It looks perfect. It crashes near him and he falls. I think I've got him

Then he climbs up a little farther down, completely unscathed. He tears after me. My health is at mid level, so I won't be able to out run him for long, but I have to distract him at least since I botch my job.

I duck and weave around the buildings on the roof. I can hear the thing thundering after me. I can hear the guys I'm playing with, yelling for me to run. Then I see it, a gas tank.

I dart for it. I know the tank is close behind me, and I don't have much time. As I run past it, I blast it, causing it to explode, sending flames everywhere, and catching the tank on fire. The tank immediately smashes me into the ground, killing me.

My teammates were able to stay away from him until he burned to death

Anyone up for an Expert run right now? Or a closed VS game?

So I found that adjusting the Game Volume slider also affects Voice chat, which still doesn't help me and my loud gun problems.

I've had a bunch of pipe bombs upstairs in the house (4+ of them) and a bunch of fuel cans in the barn on another run. Never seen a molotov though. Definitely need to save them from level 4.

Am I the only one who thinks Tanks need some balancing adjustment in Survivor mode?

Assuming you have all four survivors, and everybody has health > 50%, and you don't get an unlucky tank spawn in some cramped hallway or walkway - they are STILL a bitch and a half to take down.

I know all about the molotov/run-for-your-ass combo, but 1. It isn't fun, 2. It separates your crew causing everybody to just set themselves up to get boomered, huntered or smoked. Its a one hit incapacitation on Expert, and the withering hulk still takes a fuckton-and-then-some bullets to drop.

Its like the opposite of an easy button - its an at-least-one-of-you-is-going-to-die button, unless like I said, everybody is > 50% health and you get him out in the open.

I love the game - especially the regular scenes on Expert - but hot damn, the tanks just take all of the wind out of our sails. Any tricks or tips to beating these fuckers when you've got wounded with you?

That truly was a legendary act CrowPhoenix. Blizzard is just trying to change the subject so we don't bring up his uncalled for Friendly Fire acts. He tried to push the blame onto me, when not one of his "accidents" came while I was running ahead not crouching. He's also trying to point to StalkerU's higher FF number, without explaining that StalkerU got them trying to protect the team. While we all know Blizzard spent the entire game trying to sabotage us.

Yep, that's why I always keep a molotov on me from level 4. Also on the finale, there's usually a gas can at the beginning of the level so you can bring it to the house.

You don't really need fire to kill him.
If you're really good, you can juke him around the 3 trees that are really close to each other. You could also try to get him to go into the Children's Room from the window and he'll get stuck while you're on the balcony.

People actually beat levels on expert!? We couldn't get past the 2nd act in Blood Harvest. Seems like a few swipes from a zombie and you are down.

After seeing a cool shortcut today (4th in the post), it made me wonder what shortcuts have people found so far? I can only think of four; only one of which I found on my own. Here's the four I know of, if any of you guys know some others, post them!

----- #1

First one is probably one most everyone knows about by now, at the very start of No Mercy 1. It can't be done on versus mode, and damages you, but it allows you to skip the apartment at the start of the campaign.

Just look over the ledge, and you will see some fans. Get on the back edge of the ledge, and run off the ledge to land on the fans. Jumping will do more damage to you, so just run off.
l4d_hospital01_apartment0020.jpg

Doing this takes you right in front of the door you'd normally exit the apartment. It's more of a time save vs damage scenario.
l4d_hospital01_apartment0022.jpg

----- #2

I found this one on No Mercy 2, and it can be done on versus mode. Plus, no damage is done if you do it correctly. It and the next one aren't as big as the first and fourth skips, though. But it may help out if it allows you to avoid a Tank/horde and possibly infected on versus mode if they spawn where you skip.

In the FIRST room after the ammo stash (where the demo ended) following the crescendo event with the garage door thing, go into the room and knock out the window on the right.
l4d_hospital02_subway0031.jpg

Look down, and you will see some trash bags stacked up. Just run out and land on them. Jumping will do some damage to you, but running out and doing it correctly won't.
l4d_hospital02_subway0032.jpg

This will take you into an alley, which allows you to skip those other rooms after the ammo stash, the warehouse-type room, and bring you closer to the pawn shop safe room than the normal path. It may allow you to skip a Tank in the warehouse area, and if you toss a pipe bomb from here, you should be able to get to the safe room easily unless you are on vs and those players cause trouble. But every bit can help.
l4d_hospital02_subway0034.jpg

----- #3

I think PillowKnight found this one. On Death Toll 4, you normally have to exit out on the right side of the screen, then go through a magazine store to end up on the other side of those buses making a barricade.
l4d_smalltown04_mainstreet0018.jpg

There are two ways to do this, one is by jumping on the fence on the right side of the above screenshot, then just run along the fence (you need to be above red health, possibly yellow, iirc) onto the top of one of the buses.
l4d_smalltown04_mainstreet0027.jpg

The alternative, although you'll most likely run into more zombies, is to just jump over the sandbags between the buses to skip the magazine shop.
l4d_smalltown04_mainstreet0023.jpg

----- #4

This is probably the most useful of the four listed, as it lets you skip a crescendo event; the one on Dead Air 3, to be exact. That's the gas can barricade one. I saw this earlier today, and it is what made me decide to make this post.

What you do is stand on the railing of the stairs by the barricade, then run and jump from the "/" part of the railing (not the straight --- part).
l4d_airport03_garage0012.jpg

Run and jump from there onto the greyish metal stuff on the left.
l4d_airport03_garage0011.jpg

From up here, you just run and jump onto the barricade.
l4d_airport03_garage0013.jpg

l4d_airport03_garage0014.jpg

Then, just fall or jump to the other side. Voila!
l4d_airport03_garage0017.jpg

Do be careful though, if a Tank decides to come immediately afterward, you are trapped by the barricade, and there are some dumpsters in the immediate area (I showed Mutfox, Pop on Arrival, and Sanjay this trick on Easy, and a Tank showed up and got us all with the dumpster :lol).

Any other ones out there?

On one hand, spending the evening clearing Death Toll on Expert was a lot of fun. On the other hand, it didn't credit me for clearing it for the achievement.

Good times though, especially since it was very nearly in memory of me. :lol

Also I need to stop playing this game like it's Serious Sam.

Certain strategies and playstyles help out a lot on expert. If someone gets Boomer'd or a swarm comes, have everybody bunch up together against a wall and shoot/melee to reduce damage. Always try to have everyone together or 2+2 so one player can get a Hunter/Smoker off someone quickly (it takes like 3 seconds of an attack to get incapped), and melee Hunters/Smokers off people whenever you can. If someone gets incapped, have at least one person on top of the incapped person and defend them, and once the coast is clear, have someone defend the person reviving the incapacitated person. An alternative method to get someone picked up fast is to use a pipe bomb when someone gets incapped if there are zombies in the area. Try to have Auto-Shotguns for Tanks (Assault Rifle/Sniper Rifle doesn't seem very useful on Tanks on expert), and make sure at least one person has a molotov (or bring a gas canister) at all times in case a Tank shows up. Knowing where a good spot is if a Tank shows up is really useful, too. Those are the things that come to mind that I and the people I played with to beat all the campaigns on expert, at least. Finding a good spot that keeps Smokers/Hunters away on the finales helps, a lot too.

This was Death Toll on Expert, and I joined at the fourth level (The Town).

Rezuth lagged out at some point, so we continued on with Wayward Archer in his stead. A failed stab at the Finale convinced us that the bathroom didn't have enough visibility, so we all gathered near the chaingun. We fought off the waves of zombies, including hunters coming through the walls and smokers sneaking onto the topmost roof of the cabin. And then the Tank showed up.

Archer was crushed by the first tank, and we thankfully brought him down before he got another. We retook our positions around the minigun, and fended off the next rush. The tank music started, and we got to work sighting him.

The second tank caught up to me, incapacitated me, and I looked up, ready to meet my doom. But no, the other guys landed enough shots to kill him, and he crumbled a foot from my fallen body. They revived me, and we all agreed we needed to run for the docks now.

Myself, Sciz, and XClash were at the end of the docks, watching the boat slide in. One of the guys tried to get on the boat a bit early, and a weird glitch shoved him to the end of the docks. The horde was coming in, so this wasn't good.

It was about to get much worse.

A smoker grabbed him, dragging him further away from the boat and into an enraged horde of undead. In a last ditch effort to save him, I went down on one knee with my dual pistols and started firing into the trees.

Success! I nailed the hidden Smoker and he was free. He fought off all the zombies around him and dashed toward us. With more zombies breaking from the forest, I hopped onto the boat with him one step behind me.

EPIC

This is probably when I got boomered.

I didn't even know I was getting smoked amidst the rest of the chaos. :lol

Completely amazing escape at any rate. I was certain the horde was going to maul me at the last moment there. <3 the auto-shotgun.

Finally beat Dead Air on expert. Best strategy out of the oodles the people in my game employed was standing in the open runway behind the army plane; three people with M4's and 1 with a shotgun to clean up. When the tank comes, use a Molotov and run like hell. If someone happens to get killed by the tank (happens a lot), run for the closet and camp there. The second tank must be kited with extreme care, so as to put you by the army plane by the time he's dead.

Two of us survived, but we didn't forget the sacrifice of our comrades who absorbed those rocks like a champ.

Ah, so it was you :lol

I figured you were a goner for sure, but as it turns out dual pistols are very useful :D

Thanks for not running away from the second tank at the last second, I would have been history before we even got to the docks :O

My problem is that I don't run from tanks often enough. For most of the night, any time a tank spawned, I would invariably unload my ten shells into it and then die a horrible death no matter how I maneuvered. And yeah, the power of dual pistols is why I don't feel compelled to carry anything but the shotguns for my primary weapon. :D

And for the record, Fallengorn was the guy who originally started that game. His game had crashed and logged him out, and you took his place. =p

Ran into some really buggy servers before finding a stable one, though. Versus mode on Death Toll was interesting.

Losing all my teammates to a horde in Death Toll. Fighting my way through more zombies, fighting and evading a burning tank by myself, and taking down all 3 special infected before they pin me in just enough time to save my team and continue on with the level.

AWESOME.

In this instance, staying close by worked out very well.

If I had died, you would have been dragged clear into those trees ;)

The lobby for the Dead Air expert run is up, just waitin on Scarlet's isp situation to clear up, she's already in my friend list so the other 2 that are coming should pop me an invite. My gaf and steam id are the same.

The finale to Dead Air is officially IMPOSSIBLE on Expert. Seriously now, every other campaign has a building or something where you can hide, but for this, you only get like a mangled stair case to hide on and a bunch of debris to help you get destroyed by the Tank.

My group has been having a bunch of difficulty on it as well, but we've pretty much settled on a good strategy that will work if we can stop making mental errors and getting taken down by the tank :lol

Here's what you do --
Code:
   | \ p
   |2 \
 __| 3\__________
 |1 4 \
-======-------------
 |_ __________/
    | / p
    ~~
    p

Imagine the rough ascii art there is an image of the downed plane which is to the left of the gun turret on the Dead Air finale, and you're looking from roughly above the plane down on it here. The dashed line represents the center of the plane, and the = signs are the back fin of the plane. This fin is vital.

The top area of the plane (looking at it here) is actually raised high off the ground, and the fin offers protection from the other side of the plane. Position a guy at each point numbered in the image. Player 1 melees off of the back of the plane, 4 melees from the front, and 2 and 3 give fire cover, with 2 giving most help to player 1's side and 3 to player 4's side. From this position it's nearly impossible for 1 or 4 to get smoked as long as they're behind the fin, and the smokers almost always try to smoke from the front of the plane, allowing one of the players on that side to melee them and free them from the tongue. In our play-throughs, I was player 4, and if a smoker got player 2 or 3 he would drag them right in front of me and I would free them practically automatically with my melees. The only other thing to worry about is hunters and boomers, but they have to climb the plane too and so you have plenty of warning.

When the tank comes, stay on the plane until somebody can verify his location, and be sure to watch out for smokers and ESPECIALLY BOOMERS. If a boomer hits you here it's pretty much over so make sure you take it down. Once you've seen the tank, make sure he climbs up, all the while shooting him. Just before he makes it up, hop off the plane (on a short drop, from the top of the back wing you will take fall damage). Then run around one of the trucks while shooting him, and try and lure him onto one of the locations marked "p" where you should hopefully have a propane tank or something. Basically just make sure he gets on fire and then circle around the trucks. Once he's dead, get back on the plane and heal up. Two players should have pretty much full ammo because all they were doing before was meleeing and maybe shooting the tank. So either head back to the plane top and repeat.

So far it has worked beautifully except for people falling off the plane incorrectly or getting hit by the tank -- mechanical errors. You have to be pretty damn perfect on these things, but this strategy has seemed to work pretty well so far.

Yeah. On finales, if you get hit by a Boomer while a Tank is coming, it's pretty much a guaranteed game over, unless you have lots of pipe bombs/molotovs and know exactly where the tank is in the rush of the horde.

Finished No Mercy in 20 mins with Red Scarlet, Pop and Ab...
Was a race to the finish, and we really didn't help each other...
In the Finale I incapciated Red with a molotov, no chopper for you! :D

Red Scarlet, you can also skip the crane crescendo in Dead Air with some fancy jumping (see left4dead411 for details)

Yeah, AbsoluteMSTR showed me a youtube video of it earlier. I took some caps of Pop on Arrival, myself, AbsoluteMSTR, and Mutfox trying. We all made it..but one.

It's actually pretty easy, even though a mistake means instant death.

----- #5

Skipping the crane crescendo event on Dead Air 2.

You are pretty much simply jumping across where the dumpster will go. Run and jump to the pipe. If you make it, you will need help getting up. You can be helped up by other players from the regular side of the map.
l4d_airport02_offices0004.jpg

If you mess up the jump, you fall and go boom, like Pop did.
l4d_airport02_offices0005.jpg

IF THIS HAPPENS, proceed to laugh at the player.
l4d_airport02_offices0007.jpg

Once you make it across, get helped up by the other players.
l4d_airport02_offices0008.jpg

After that, you simply jump on top of the pipes/wires.
l4d_airport02_offices0009.jpg

Then, jump up and to the top!
l4d_airport02_offices0010.jpg

After we made it across the dumpster skip and tried the barricade skip, the four of us pretty much Rambo'd through the rest of Dead Air. It was pretty fun, so the four of us (Mutfox, Pop on Arrival, AbsoluteMSTR, and myself) decided we would Rambo Race through No Mercy on Easy. Easy probably works best because it lets you all use the same weapon (IF everyone goes through with it >:() and there is no Friendly Fire to be cheap.

We were going to use the submachine guns then assault rifles, but a couple people stuck with shotguns. :(

The goal we decided, was simply to race through the level separately, not bothering with the other players. Who would reach the safe room first? Would players help incapacitated or killed players? That was up to the individual. How evil would we all be to each other? That was undecided as well. Who would kill the most zombies?

So we started No Mercy. Everyone took the shortcut to skip the apartment, although AbsoluteMSTR jumped and received more damage. I took a submachine gun, and don't know what everyone else took. Pop on Arrival took the early lead and kept it through the first map. I was second place, and grabbed a pipe bomb right before the subway entrance. As I passed the alarm-equipped car, I shot it and set off the alarm (much to AbsoluteMSTR and Mutfox's dismay). I threw my pipe bomb afterward though. Pop on Arrival won this map, and Mutfox died.

On the second map, Pop and I pulled ahead. Tier 2 weapons were available at the first spot, so I grabbed the assault rifle. I think Pop grabbed an auto shotgun (grr). He and I hauled ass through the subway up until the room underneath the crescendo event, where a WTF TANK FELL DOWN THROUGH THE HOLE AND LANDED ON ME. Everyone laughed while I got killed by the Tank. The group I guess worked together for the crescendo, and Pop took the shortcut mentioned earlier in the thread and he won this map as well. AbsoluteMSTR or Pop tried to get the car alarm to go off, but it either didn't, or it eventually did.

Third map: Pop and I pulled ahead again, then a Tank showed up by the gas station. No problem, I will shoot the gas pumps! By the time I noticed that not only was the Tank NOT dead, Mutfox and Pop were already going up the lift, and it was 1 on 1. I got tangled up from the gas station debris and died yet again. AbsoluteMSTR fell behind due to not being on the lift, and Mutfox refused to open the metal door that would let him catch up. Pop pulled way ahead, and there was a Tank at the end of the map. It was easily avoidable for Pop, who finished first again. AbsoluteMSTR rescued me in the sewer, and we finished the map in third and fourth.

Now it is time for the hospital. After being walloped by two Tanks, I was a little annoyed. I sprinted ahead of everyone, closing doors on Pop for the first half of the map. Mutfox found this pretty hilarious. Pop got to the elevator first, and I got incapacitated in the middle of it. Either because I had to die for the others to go up the elevator, or because whoever helped me up was in a good mood, someone helped me to my feet. I think Mutfox got incapacitated afterward also. :lol At the top of the hospital, everyone ran through and followed AbsoluteMSTR, who went the wrong way near the end, tricking a player or two. He finished first, with me getting in second. Thanks to the extra time, I picked up a pipe bomb and healed myself.

The finale! Surely we will work together here. :lol I dashed ahead, throwing a pipe bomb to clear out the hallway. I wanted to reach the radio really fast, so the others would get stuck from the initial swarm. The radio took too long, though. We all stayed up on the roof and various other spots. I think Mutfox got comboed by a Smoker and Hunter, but I rescued him eventually after zombies stopped coming. For the Tanks, we all managed to kill the first one pretty well, with little injury. I used the chain gun for a decent part of the finale, until the second Tank, at least. I believe I got incapacitated right before he died, and everybody ran up to the helipad. I had about 9HP, so I began to use my first aid kit. Then I notice I am on fire, thanks to Mutfox. The healing meter was above 95% when I became incapacitated, and everyone else made it to the helicopter.

Pop clearly won on reaching the safe rooms first (3 out of 5), yet Mutfox won by the number of zombies killed (about 237). I'm pretty sure I got last, being the only player that died at all, and twice at that. Molotovs are pretty evil, but I guess that's what I get for making the alarm go off on the first map and closing doors on people. I will have to remember using them strategically the next time, especially against Mutfox. In all, it took 20 minutes to reach the end; should have been about 15 or so. That (plus everyone using the same weapon) is for another time, though.

I think Pop took some caps at various points in the Rambo Race, which he'll post later hopefully. That was a lot of fun, and I look forward to doing that again with you guys on No Mercy and the other maps, as well! :)

If you want to clean it up, and/or include Mutfox and Pop's accounts of the race (if they post them), be my guest, trin.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Absolute kept helping Scarlet up when I was just telling him to leave her. He ruined the jerk thing I did to her where I was pretending to revive her before getting on the elevator and just dropped her and said "JUST KIDDING" and went inside. Absolute went back outside to help her. Fucking white knights. :[

Here's some pictures of me just watching my allies get porked by the special infected.

Okay, if anyone's interested in playing L4D with a PC FPS neophyte, add me as a friend and send me a message, I guess? I've played the 360 version, but I've always sucked with dual analog. If I get enough people to play with, I'll buy it. Steam Account name is the same as my SN here.

Stupid nvidia drivers...
I didn't know the latest drivers had stutter issues. I'm gonna rollback and see if that solves all these stupid crashes.
