yes, this is the only way however.

You have to rightclick someone on friends list, "View game info" and then auto retry

But it never actually joins the game for me when I try this. It'll kick me out of my current game. And then it's a mad scramble to find the game I had it auto-connecting and hit join again manually before the slot is filled. It's more a harsh notification a slot has opened.

Just got The Untouchables...awesome. Francis got pulled by a smoker but luckily it didn't count against it, the whole thing was tense as hell.

Only if the server allows players to join without going through the lobby.

Give me a hollar if you want to play in about an hour...right now its a bit too hard to play.
Hooray, shared internet!

God pubs I hate them so. Was playing versus with some friends of mine and PotatoeMasher joined. Managed to grab one more so we had six. We split off into two groups of three so we'd each only have at most one asshole to deal with.

Turns out we got the asshole. Shoots a witch, I save him, he says, "YOU GUYS ARE ALL *insert racist expletive*", starts a votekick on me for some fucking reason, and PotateoMasher "accidentally" votes yes.

I know your game, mister. ):< Teehee.

Moral of the story: I'm never being on a team with randoms again ever.

I am happy to note that Valve's update didn't break the rock on the Death Toll finale. I hopped into someone's game where they were stuck on the finale, and after dying a bit in the middle, we got to the end and finished it on the first try. I think I took maybe 20 damage and all four people survived. The only thing that ever tried to climb up were regular zombies, and they're easy to melee off. =D Either we were really good at shooting a couple of the rocks that tanks fired, or the rocks sometimes actually glitch on the rock you're STANDING on and don't hit you.

(oh, actually I took like 40-50 more damage when a hunter jumped on me as I was going to the dock, before my teammates killed it...we had two pipe bombs and a gas tank to cover our retreat though, and we only saw one hunter and zero boomers the entire finale?)

*edit*

Side note, why did the Left 4 Dead update happen on a sublauncher instead of in the regular "Games" tab? Do Valve games update differently than other games and I just forgot?

Fuck. I am so sick of everyone wanting to play on expert. We make it to the second level, die a billion times, maybe make it to the third and then everyone quits out. And yes, I suck ... that's why I would like to play on a difficulty level that's reasonable. I just like finishing campaigns and I don't really care about achievements.

You didnt suck....that much :D

I find it more fun if you get into more trouble, that teaches me lot of stuff to become better myself. (I suck pretty much too).

I thought the game would recognize when I started to speak, but no, you have to hold down C. What a chore!

Ohh, and i'm lowlife555 btw.

Finished playing a little while ago with Red, Pop On Arrival, and someone whose name began with an S that I have completely forgotten. Good times, good times. I fail at tank-battling, though. I really need to improve in that aspect.

It's just bad luck when the you see the Tank heading straight towards you in expert, though. You're dead in like 3 hits if he incapacitates you. :(

I'm starting to think the game didn't sell very well on PC. The online player count is like 1/4 of CS, and the game has just released, so the ratio of players/owners should be much higher.

Weren't there more people playing L4D than CS on release day?

I was so disgusted I had to quit after that. I swear was mashing on F2, but I turn off all of the lights when I play L4D.

We should have just played TF2. :(

We have to play again tonight to make up for last night! :D

Hmmm could be. Maybe someone has the stats for it. I was under the impression it capped at 45k-ish first day though. Because this game has no semblance of balance, it will not have the longevity of CS or even TF2, so I expect the userbase to die down quite a bit more throughout the next few months.

You can change that in the options (either Steam or in-game) where you just have to talk and it'll start mic chat.

As was stated before:

People who play CS ONLY play CS. It's like people who own an Xbox for Madden, Halo3, or CoD4. That's all they are ever going to play, and the only game that can tear them away is a new version of CS.

The people playing L4D are probably the people who appreciate NEW Valve projects, which explains why the population of TF2 players went down significantly when L4D came out.

It probably sold fine, it's just that it can't match up to the uber-fanbase of CS:S and 1.6.

Well it is the most played FPS, which is launched through steam and is not called Counter-Strike. That is.....something.

But it is not really fair to compare anything to CS.

Also what is up with all the people playing that football manager? :lol

Nothing outdoes CS, except Call of Duty and WoW.
Plus, perhaps some older games. People who play titles such as CS apparently don't use Xfire as much as those who play titles such as CS:S.

If it were to have a greater playerbase than CS, it would have to be groundbreaking.

I'm sure it sold well. Most of the people on my list that played TF2 last month are all playing L4D now. And if it gets TF2 support, the game will get buzz everytime new content drops which should result in the game having legs. I have to say that I'm consistently impressed with how consumer friendly valve's business model works, especially in comparison to the draconian model that the rest of the industry seems to want to adopt. I wish the other publishers would emulate valve's model more.

I really hope Left 4 Dead stays in the top10 Live Activity charts for a long time. It really deserves it, and would improve the odds of good DLC support.

Valve says they had to submit the final game 1.5 months before release date for Microsoft certification and printing of discs. I hope they've been working on a new campaign during that time, based in a different type of setting, and supporting Versus.

I wouldn't expect that many CS players use XFire. The reason? Steam Friends/Community.

Orange Box sold millions on PC alone and Team Fortress 2 was never higher than Left 4 Dead is now. You just misunderstand just how incredibly popular Counter-Strike is.

The game will be incredibly successful on PC. Have no feat about that.

It was more or less like that before Steam community too.
And before Steam community, Steam Friends was utterly broken and entirely useless.

Haha, I remember the old state of Steam Friends. It was awful, and never worked. I think it took over a year to even get it working stably...but even then only the Valve games supported it. It's fantastic now though.

I kind of liked the original name better..."Tracker". I remember using that during the CS 1.4 beta. The "Friends" name is good now that it's been integrated with Steam Community though.

Isn't it funny how Halo CE is still #22?

I'd actually enjoy playing Halo CE if the animations weren't stuck at 30fps. It's really jarring to have the game running at 60fps, but the animations are missing half the frames.

I wonder if they fixed the netcode.

counterstrike is the game of the forever. Any computer can run it and people have been playing it for, what, 10 years!?

Oh man, just played a random versus match and I get teamed up with one of the coolest persons I've ever met online. Throughout the entire match, he was just talking using the Solid Snake voice. He really nailed it and for a few moments, it actually felt like I was playing L4D with Snake. ;_;

See, this is how my PC would look playing L4D. I'm glad I have it on 360!

I don't really know what settings I can change from the recommended ones, and what hardware issues I'd have with increasing the settings. Plus, it looks fine to me I guess (only other PC game I'm used to seeing is CS/HL1).

Viz showed me an alternate way to skip the crane on Dead Air 2, which you can use to get across by yourself (but it is possible to need help up from someone, or die from missing the jump). It seems a bit easier, though.

All you do is jump up on this mario-looking pipe thing.
l4d_airport02_offices0016.jpg

Then jump onto the fence, and across the gap to the barb-wire fence.
l4d_airport02_offices0017.jpg

l4d_airport02_offices0018.jpg

Then you can jump from the end of the fence onto the box or pipe (may need help up), or if you are awesome like Viz and Sanjay, who just jump from the fence onto the concrete.
l4d_airport02_offices0020.jpg

A Tank came after the group I was with yesterday (RocketDarkness/Pop/Sanjay/me) a bit after the crane, and it was chasing Pop. So, Pop just ran back to the crane and jumped across, where the Tank tried to keep following, and he fell down the alley. :lol

maybe game has really short legs? Me a couple friends played the shit out of this game last week and had a blast, but after finishing each campaign several times its starting to get stale. Only four levels can get old. This game needs DLC every month to keep it going as long as TF2 IMO.

Wait for SDK.

And what's is up with servers changing settings? I've only managed to get 1 out of 4 games on the right difficulty, and then it switched to vs mode. wtf

You can start with AA. That shotgun looks jaggy enough to saw a zombie in half.

There is no way in hell can Valve pull that off. Maybe another company could. But these were the guys that though they could have all three half life episodes out by the end of 2007... :lol They make an awesome product, but it takes them a while.

PC version will be overflowing with content in a month or two. Unfortunately without an emphasis on a server browser it's going to be very random. You will find yourself joining servers where the zombies move slow and require headshots, all the counterstrike weapons will be buyable and you'll earn money from every zombie kill, and there will be poorly implemented experience systems to earn rpg stats where you can boost your speed to 60mph while running, regenerate ammo and health over time, and make expert mode zombies do 1 damage per hit to you.

There's gonna be a lot of crap, but some amazing stuff as well.
