Probably a stupid question, but why aren't the other two campaigns available for Versus?
All the campaigns are designed for co-op, so they need to be adapted for Versus. Besides adding climbable walls, certain maps just aren't fun to play as an infected and require more tuning. Frankly I don't think they modified the available campaigns enough, for example NM4 isn't suited for Versus at all. I've played Dead Air in Versus (you can just copy and rename the co-op map files to get them playable in VS) and at the very least the first few DA maps aren't much fun in VS. Death Toll should be fun though.

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the game originally only supported one mode, and that was the mode that would later become Versus.

So at a base level, all the maps SHOULD work in Versus and were probably built with it in mind.

Yes, that's true but it's quite clear the maps as they are now were NOT designed with VS in mind. That or there wasn't nearly enough playtesting.

I agree about NM4; it's way too easy for the Survivors to just run through at speed, and the crescendo event is one of the least fun to play as Infected.

It surely can't be that demanding, however, to make a few tweaks and adjustments to Death Toll and Dead Air to get them working. The changes to NM and BH for versus are not that substantial, after all.

I would be very disappointed if we didn't a patch for this, on PC and 360, before February of next year.

Mmm. Fair point.

I hope that one day Valve releases a mode where you can choose your side from the beginning (Infected, Survivor) and stay on it for the remainder of the game. I like Versus, but usually when I play it I'm in the mood to play as either the Infected or as the Survivors, not both back to back. Switching from such dramatically different playstyles back-to-back makes for really odd pacing. Also, I'm not a huge fan of scores, I prefer to just play for fun, so I'd hope that scores were optional in said imaginary mode.

But I'm just being stupidly nit-picky. It's because I love the game so much. :lol

I had to do a last machinima for a class, and while I was originally going to be another one based on Halo, I decided to use Left 4 Dead this time.

This is the resulting machinima.

It's super rough, and it was done in a couple days... but the late hours spent on those days probably show through :lol

Let me know what you guys think :D
And it's okay to say it sucks is awesome

Yeah, I'm gonna be one of those guys that's gonna bitch about the team shuffling. I fucking hate it when you find yourself with fun teammates only to be switched to a different team next round. I don't think it has anything to do with fast loaders switching sides before everyone can get in either. The group I was playing with was just having fun and no team was REALLY winning.

Also, while getting Red Scarlet's Zombie Genocidest achievement, this happened:

it's been a while since a game made me say "OH SHIT". Didn't expect her to be right IN FRONT of the spawn closet.

It doesn't bother me that server admins put all sorts of tweaks to their server (melee fatigue, team shuffling, etc).

What does bother me is that valve didn't give us a way to request a 'vanilla' server when setting up a game so we can play with base rules when we want. Without a server browser that works for parties I would think this should be mandatory.

So I just played in a VERSUS server where you play the first level of EVERY SCENARIO. It was awesome. The weird thing though, was once we cycled through all 4 of them it just repeated back to the first level of the first scenario and reset the score. There was no finale. Has anyone else played in a server like this?

Also the server before that, the TANK was green like the hulk and they threw more zombies at you than I have ever seen. They were just constantly flooding in full force. Oh yeah, it was also the first server I have ever seen that has respawns in VERSUS.

Sadly I didn't think to take screenshots until now :(

I haven't gotten into a modded server since the update, which led me to assume that the problem has been resolved. When was the last time you experienced getting into a crap server?

Team shuffling is tolerable. What I can't stand are server's that have a default difficulty or mode. I join an Expert No Mercy Game, and I end up playing on Blood Harvest Versus, or No Mercy Normal mode.

Pretty sure i've been on a melee fatigue versus server within the last week, but it might have been pre-patch. I'm not sure.

Yep. I thought it was a bunch of mods, but my friend did some experiments and confirmed that it was just buggy shit with dedicated server settings.

Basically, if you disabled cheats (pre-patch) it would set a bunch of stuff to "default" which for some reason was zero, instead of what actually IS default.

At least I think that's what he said!

Maybe it's a bug with my settings but I find my grain filter isn't as strong as it used to be. I want it to look like your screenshot again.

Not when you muster 4 friends on a versus team and have to fill the other with pubbies. Losing a friend to the pubbies usually just leads to a game falling apart.

lttp: I had my first Versus match in Left 4 Dead today...

I have never laugh hysterically while ripping someone to bits in a long time. :lol

The Infected team needs to show even more teamwork that the Survivors do! Unless you spawn as the Tank, you die just by having a Survivor look at you in a fun way but it works so well.

Granted I sucked in my first few matches but the tactics behind each of the Infected really adds a new dimension to the game. You start to play like the A.I Director and figure out where the best/worst place to jump on someone is. After playing single-player, you really do appreciate the A.D Director and how evil it can be, just because it gives you ideas in Versus mode. :D

Wow, I expected Yahtzee to be far more harsh. A few things he really nailed:

  • The sheer tension and calm mixed together
  • The perverse griefing-fun involved with the Infected classes
  • The suggestion of having the player control a regular zombie while waiting to respawn (this wouldn't be unbalanced at all, and would give the player something to do)
  • The anthropomorphizing of the Director by Valve (ie you get pissy at some unseen malevolent being rather than the game itself)
  • Not as quite as varied as TF2 in ways (DLC could help loads in this regard)

:lol we could have won, but there was too much FF and not enough defense of swarm/barf victims. My teacher didn't show up in his office, so when I got back everyone had left the server. Am up to try again, but I don't know if my ping will cooperate at this hour.

Woo, beat Death Doll on Expert. Now I have Dead Air and Blood Harvest, both are probably hard as hell. =(

Wat, how did you get Untouchables.

I found it easy(ish) on Death Toll. Get all 4 people on the docks, most of the common infected run down the center, though some grab on the left side and pull up(easy to kill). Special Infected are seen from miles away and pose little to no threat, though when the Tank comes I stayed there and gunned him down before he got to us, the debris that gets tossed is the biggest threat here.

Then when the boat comes, it'll end up right where you're already at, so just throw a pipebomb and get on.

You missed the joys of encountering a tank in a narrow hallway several times.

Speaking of Expert: I still haven't finished any of the campaigns on that particular difficulty (Xbox 360), even though we played it for dozens of hours already. The finales get us every time. That, or a Tank the Director spawned at the worst possible time.

Still tense and fun as hell though.

No comments on my Left 4 Dead machinima? :lol Even after like 30 or so views? ;)

I don't blame you D: It kind of left my prof speechless as well.

On the "No Mercy" Finale try hiding underneath some stairs outside. I won't give you specific directions because it's fun to find on your own but there is a helpful strategy out there.

man, we made it 3/4 of the way through 2 seperate campaigns on Expert last night before i was abandoned! twice!

after goofing around for like 30 minutes we totally rambo'd our way through BH 4. well i rambo'd pased your incapacitated body being mauled by zombies, but we made it none the less.

I refused to play with some randoms yesterday in versus because they were pulling crap like that.

Left 4 Dead 411:

Some Xbox modders found a way to use console commands on the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead, allowing them to do everything PC users can (sv_cheats 1), causing some headaches for people just wanting to play a normal game. Doug Lombardi sent out the following message:

Valve has released a server-side fix to deny the recently reported cheats on all dedicated Left 4 Dead Xbox 360 servers. The fix is designed to halt the cheating behavior on the dedicated servers, which accounts for the majority of the co-op and Versus modes of play. A title update for those playing on user-hosted servers and/or via system link will be released in the coming days.

I love playing this with new players of the game. It's a lot of fun seeing them learn, sometimes through a single campaign, different things to do to keep the team going that they didn't know or usually do before.

Yeah, I've had that experience too. It's pretty cool.

I made a couple of my friends get the game recently, it's so fun to play with them, they get excited about everything :lol

Is this worth getting for the 360. My computer sucks so I won't be able to look at the PC version as an option.

I'm mostly worried that there may be a lack of support for the 360 version from Valve...(Yeah I know MS has a huge say in the way support happens and when etc)

I have gone to loads of shops and this seems to be one of the few games on the 360 that has managed to retain it's full price or there about value...which is a simply amazing feat nowadays the way prices tumble after 2 weeks...let alone a month on...:D

Anyways yeah...I want...but I have worries about how much support it will get...

I'm in the same position. I do plan on buying it this weekend, or the weekend after that though. It's just hard for me to put down $60 for this.

Well, for the time being, it seems as though Valve is set on keeping the 360 version updated alongside the PC version.

The 360 version of TF2 was not developed at the same time with the PC version, it was just a port. On the other hand, the 360 version of L4D was developed with the PC version, so from what I can tell, Valve is going to to give 360 owners everything the PC guys n' gals get. Of course I'll believe it when I see it, but I have a lot of faith in them this time around.

I am probably the worst player on GAF. The statistic that indicates my newbness, most damage done to teammates. I got that one fucking aced.
