I had to do a last machinima for a class, and while I was originally going to be another one based on Halo, I decided to use Left 4 Dead this time.

This is the resulting machinima.

It's super rough, and it was done in a couple days... but the late hours spent on those days probably show through :lol

Let me know what you guys think :D
And it's okay to say it sucks is awesome
AI Director is really Dr. Claw... I KNEW IT!

I love playing this with new players of the game. It's a lot of fun seeing them learn, sometimes through a single campaign, different things to do to keep the team going that they didn't know or usually do before.

It's usually fun but I've had a frustrating experience with one. Before the patch I was sent to a normal difficulty game (searched for advanced) and in two minutes I noticed that all three players are friends. I let them run the show while I try to add a few tips in between. I've only given one or two but the biggest one I was giving was for one to stop using all the med kits. When we would get to a safe zone, she'd use two on herself when her life was already in the green. I told her that she shouldn't use it too fast because other people need it too. All she said to me was "Hush you, you're giving me a headache!." My game with them didn't last very long.

Well, on the last page somebody posted a long list of the possible voice commands.
I would try a google search for Left 4 Dead console commands and see what pops up. Off the top of my head the big ones to mess around with mine be...

sv_cheats 1 (required to use many of the console commands, it just means cheats are enabled)

god 1 (invincible, good for when you feel like practicing one shotting witches)

give <item name> (the game will provide a list of the items that are usable with give as soon as you type "give" in the console)

z_spawn <enemyname> (possible entries are hunter, boomer, witch, tank, smoker, mob, 1, this will spawn the desired enemy at your cursor)

noclip (allows you to traverse the level in any direction without and clipping)

Theres plenty more available I'm sure, but those are just a few to toy around with at first.
ya, I know the basic ones, but I saw some people do some cool stuff like making them self huge and stuff. Off to google I go

bind <key> "vocalize PlayerDeath"

I think thats it

I've already bound keys for when I feel like spamming laughter or throwing in a random death scream...all that I really need now is cursing :lol Gotta figure out which one that is.

Cursing one is "PanicEvent".

What keys are open to binding? I'd want to bind some to my F keys, but not sure what's all used for what.
Annoying yelling seems to be a popular bind for the kids these days.

Does L4D support macros?

Does this game run on a single-core processor, 1GB ram, and a 6600gt?

I tried running it under wine, but it was unplayable. Not sure if it's Wine or the hardware (or both).

I was able to run L4D at a steady 30fps@1024x768 w/4xAA on a Geforce 6800 128MB / P4 3.0GHz. Upgrading to a x1950GT let me run it at 1280x1024 w/4xAA and a slightly better framerate. The game chugged during zombie rushes, but it was playable.

Just wanted to pop in and say this is quickly becoming my GOTY, I haven't had this much fun in an online game in a while. Versus was a riot tonight...:lol

:lol watching a smoker pull a survivor as the elevator doors close = priceless.

I am obsessed with Versus and No Mercy.

Me and a friend could use two extra people on an Expert run right now, Steam ID is dmbot if anyone feels like joining.

Playing this game from Japan on my 360 is a horrible experience. I get disconnected from around 80-90% of the games that I try to join. If I do manage to get in, there's a good chance that the game is already full. If I do manage to get through that final barrier, my ping is absolutely atrocious, and out of all the 100 of rounds I've entered, it's only ever been non-red once.

However, through all this frustration shines an stunning piece of software. I've never stuck with a game that was so fraught with technical issues.

A patch and some servers for us people in and Asia, and this will not only be my GOTY, but my favourite of this gen.

Was finally able to fire this up for the first time last night (360). Played with 2 friends online and 1 cpu player. At first it was just 2 of us, and we were getting DESTROYED on Hard (the game calls it advanced). Once the 3rd guy came in, we stood a chance but still had to try chapters 4 and 5 of No Mercy a few times each, damn those tanks! Only 1 of us made it to the rescue chopper, but damn we all had soooo much fun! can't wait to play it again tonight.

The Left 4 Dead Japanese community on the PC is very lively. If you've got the rig, I'm pretty sure the PC is way to go for L4D. I get matched up with Japanese players every time I do a search and the L4D Japan steam group has like 2000 members with always at least 300-400 people playing online at any given time.

If you've got the rig, you should consider double-dipping!

This game is beginning to piss me off. Sure I'm having fun with Versus, but not when the damn game swaps people when maps are changing. This sure as hell isn't my GOTY and I sure as hell won't recommend my friends to get it, even though I bought 2 copies, one for my nephew. Whichever dev thought it was fun to autobalance teams needs to jump off a bridge.

I'm not exactly clear on the circumstances that lead to autobalancing, but come on dude. I've singlehandedly played against a team of three people for most of a campaign, that isn't very enjoyable.

I've never had that happen o.o; Then again, I've never played with less than 7 other friends. We usually balance before starting.

I should play with some GAFfers again too.

I really can't get into the game when playing public matches, so I tend to play versus 90 percent of the time when it's friend-only. And it's only happened once that I've noticed.

any advises how to survive the campaigns on expert? i tried that the last couple of days but my teams allways die before chapter 4 :lol
When a tank comes around, set him on fire and run. Don't shoot, just avoid him and his cement slabs. After 40 seconds are up (regardless of health) he'll keel over and die.

ok now i understand what i did wrong when a tank appeard and why the others said to run after they set the tank on fire.

Stick together, force hordes through choke points, save fire for tanks (when in doubt, light em and run) and melee, melee, melee.

Communication is also key - it's much easier to respond to a horde, tank, or special infected if you're all equally aware of it and working together, and a bit of voice chat can make all the difference.

There are also a handful of exploits you can use, but that's no fun.

you seemed to be doing fine last night. it's all about teamwork anyways, so as long as your a team player you can progress at your own pace.

This happened to us last night. And it wasn't just a "one player gets moved over to fill the spot of someone else who ragequit" either. It actually split up our team of 4 into 2 on each team, even though there were still other players in the game.

So damn annoying!

That could also be a fast way to die horribly... Tanks are fast and not watching your steps for a second can be deadly, 40 seconds are also a lot more than you think they are. Also, tanks can't jump, which is pretty useful.

This is a good tip for some areas. But I hate the AI when a tank spawns in a small room/area with nowhere to go quick enough to escape him.

Also, I need to get in on some GAF expert campaigns as I need them. Also, I'd be up for versus as well.

Coordinating the retreat and calling out the tank's position every few seconds is very helpful.

When this strategy works, it works well. I was on No Mercy (Expert) with a team, and we got TWO tanks on the subway. Every time we came across one, two of us would die, but the other two would backtrack through the level faster than the Tank could keep up and we were able to keep the run alive (we eventually made it to the saferoom safely).

It's true that tanks can't jump, but they can climb very easily.

Yeah, I'm not saying it doesn't work, just that it could be hard to pull off. Also, the director doesn't seem to like it when you backtrack too far... Every time we do, we get hit by a mob hard. Though when you get a tank in a small area, you run the fuck away.

And the tank is a lot slower climbing than running, getting on the carts in Blood Harvest tunnels for example and jumping between them can work great (until he throws that fucking piece of concrete).

EDIT: Oh, and I don't know if this is old, but FUCK.

don't know if its old or not, but thats a good way to get the achievement for singlehandedly killing the tank if you were in that situation.

Sorry I had to jet out of that VS match guys, friend's been working doubles all week, and I needed to get something from her while I was still in town. D:

Botolf said:

They can indeed climb. However, they climb pretty slowly. If you can find a good spot, you can slow down a tank immensely while it's chasing you, and the erst of your team and take potshots at it (making sure not to draw too much aggro lest it chase them instead)!

We had to hold positions in the respawn closets a few times after reviving our fallen comrades in those same closets :lol (mobs came a lot).

I've killed a full group on No Mercy Finale just by myself before, but that doesn't mean that I will enjoy playing by myself all the time. I just finished a game where I was winning so I went to the losing team because they had only 2 people plus I wanted to try to kill 4 to get the Tank Achievement. Somehow after that map, I got switched BACK to my old team for the rest of the map. One guy in the game kept getting switched back and forth, on the 3rd map he had to play as Survivor twice.

I don't know about you but I play games to win, that's how I have fun. When the game switches me after playing over an hour TO A LOSING TEAM ON FINALE STAGE, that shit pisses me off and is no longer fun. Sometimes I would just play through it and other times I would just leave that game. I've seen other people leaving mid game too because they got switched to the other team.

This is a stupid way to fix things. They should leave the Autobalance to the AI Director, that's what it's there for.

I have fun just playing, and receiving a brutal 3v1 owning because nobody wants willingly to balance out the teams isn't fun in the slightest.

I feel you. I went through a stage of TF2 where this was constantly happening and after about two weeks of being ping-ponged back and forth, I snapped and temporarily deleted the game. Turns out it was admins deliberately switching people to balance out teams. Needless to say, I quit playing on that server when I realized they were the ones at fault.

That was never a problem for me, Left 4 Dead is not TF2. I enjoy just having fun with my friends when I play, even in VS I don't get too competitive and rarely care all that much about the score...

I would have got the Untouchables achivement by doing the stair trick on NM Finale, but some moron decided he needs more ammo, after we down the second tank. Time the chopper came in view he was overwhelm by the horde leaving the building.

This was pretty cool.
l4d_vs_hospital02_subway0013.jpg

But unfortunately, warcock, I, and our other 2 teammates (human first) did really well on the finale, and the other team left, despite they had the chance to win at the end if they did better than us.

One hilarious thing was that there were 4 witches in our way, and I had to crown each one. I did, but on level 3, the witch was in the tunnel after the ammo room, and a hunter pounced me, thankfully .00000001 seconds after I shot her.

I almost got Untouchables for 2 random strangers yesterday on advanced, but one guy walked in front of me near the end and I hit him with the handgun, and one guy got stuck on the pier and didn't get on the boat in time. Oh well.
