Could one of the NeoGAF Steam group admins hit me with a PM? I'd like to bind my server to the general NeoGAF group but I can't without the Steam group number, which apparently is only on the admin page...

Appreciate the help if it can be given.

Just had an epic 3 hour match getting through Blood Harvest.
Hiding out on the house, in the upstairs bedroom, 2 guarding the door and 2 the window.
Once the tank arrives, we bolt to the roof/ground level and take that mofo down.
Run back to the room and repeat.
By the time the 3rd tank arrives, we're pretty much down to our final health and just trying to survive until the army truck comes. I see it coming and a horde of zombies running after us. Francis runs to the truck and our other guy is pinned down. I run to help the guy, but see the tank coming. I peaced the eff out. :lol

Run back to the army truck and see Francis getting pinned down right on the the ramp by a hunter / zombies. I try to help, but as soon as I step in the truck, it takes off. I become the lone survivor. :lol :lol

Thanks to whomever I played with tonight. Neogaf > random XBL people. :D

Haha, I thought you were mad! I'm Slade5912, and DestinyHer0 is Hero here on GAF, but we know each other in real life. The other guy is our friend but he's not a Gaffer. We were trying over and over again and I really wanted to taste that sweet victory, but it got late and the 3 of us got into like a dispute; it got to the frustrating point for some of us. I thought you were fed up, but glad to hear you had fun as well. We'll def have to play again next time, but why no mic? Not the talkative type?

Awesome! I'm definitely down. I didn't reconfigure my mic beforehand and this didn't know how to work it (just purchase the 360). I got it setup after the game, and I should be good to go next time we play. :D

Also, how does one activate voice chat in game? Does it pickup automatically once you start talking, or is there a specific button?

So, I downloaded the demo a while back with the intention of digging into it when I've got some more free time. Earlier today I finally manage to sit down and try playing the game, only to be presented with the message that there's a "locked copy of the demo" on my hard drive, and I'm more than welcome to purchase it.

Confused and assuming that it was an error of some sort, I do some digging on Google only to find that the demo was, for some bizarre reason, a time-limited one. And not the normal "Can't play it after it's been installed for X amount of days" time-limited, but actually "Can't be played after a certain date" kind.

Has there been any news of them releasing a "real" demo at any point later on?

They need all the servers for the actual game! Why they don't keep the single player portion is beyond me though. They'll probably do free weekend type deals a la TF2 every once in awhile though.

What servers? I had always assumed that the game used a model similar to TF2, where people just ran their own servers. Sure, Valve needs to run a master server to keep track of all the other ones, but isn't that it?

And if they are running their own servers, I would have thought that they would have figured that it'd be a good idea to keep some around for people to actually try the game before buying it.

Probably because playing single-player is a huge waste of time and isn't the point of the game at all.

I ran into a few noobs/whiny people in Versus today. This was No Mercy, with most of the hilarity occurring in the third level - The Sewers.

Hunter dies without pouncing anyone. Hunter whines about it.

Boomer dies without spraying anyone. Boomer whines about it.

My friend kills a Hunter in mid-leap. Hunter whines about it.

My friend blows up a Boomer through a thick set of shelves. Boomer says that's bullshit. I tell him there's bullet penetration in this game. Another Infected player tries to be a smartass and says, "This is Source, dude". I tell them to try it on their next turn.

I see a Boomer climbing up a wall ahead of us, and he then stands still (presumably setting up an ambush). I shot once, and sure enough he explodes. One of Boomer's friends tries to be a smartass and cries "aimbot". I explain why spotting obese zombies isn't a hard thing to do.

So after playing through 2 campaigns today I realized something... I haven't been getting the achievements for beating the campaigns. I looked and I haven't gotten even 1 of the achievements, even though I've beaten them all.

Anyone else have this problem?

I got the death toll one when I didn't make it, while my friend who made it didn't get it. Probably karma as he didn't save me from a hunter after I threw the pipebomb that gave him the oppertunity to escape.

It's an issue I sometimes have.

I think it might have to do with me loading the map slower than everyone else, and thus the game thinks I'm absent for long enough not to give me a completion achievement.

You need to be there when the campaign intro loads, so you should always restart once everyone has finished loading.

This game needs a patching pretty badly.

As amazing as the game is (and trust me, it's my GOTY), there are a few game breaking bugs and a couple game breaking oversights that the can be exploited upon command, nevermind the actual console hacking going on.

  • Spawning on people that are hanging off a ledge is broken.
  • You can jump down from really really high places and insta-kill people with a hunter.
  • I know tanks are more or less spawned based on a calculation and not a predetermination, but if one team gets one, it only seems fair that the other should get one as well.
  • You can knock things around as the tank, sometimes blocking the survivors paths indefinitely.
  • I've read about people finding ways to avoid aspects of the finale all together.

There are only some things that you can intentionally exploit, but they can stop the game dead in it's tracks (make it unbeatable for the survivors) or ruin the game completely (console hacking).

Patch this game ASAP Valve. Your amazing game needs your attention.

...

That out of the way, had an amazing time with everyone tonight.
Are you playing on 360? On PC, hunter pounce damage is capped so unless there's some obscure bug you can't instakill anyone. No idea what's the spawning on ledge thing you are talking about either. Items blocking survivors path should now disappear pretty quickly. There are quite a few annoying bugs still to be patched though, the team switching bug especially.

Its made by valve, so it's guaranteed to have an active fanbase for at least half a year.

The 360 version im not too sure about.
I'd say there's a good chance of Left 4 Dead still having an active community months down the road, regardless of the DLC. A lot of people claim that Team Fortress 2 is dead on the 360, while this is very far from the truth in reality.

L4D community seems lacking on PC from what ive seen the past few days. Starting to take longer to find a full lobby for versus, and atleast half the people are usually European. I havent had a green ping in almost a week because it keeps connecting me to a euro server (presumably because the hosts are euro)

Ah, the confusions of a combined thread. I was wondering about the people who were talking about this. I successfully pounced from the highest building I could find in No Mercy and was disappointed by the amount of "pounce damage" I received. Was wondering what happened to my supposed insta-death. That explains it.

That would be awesome if you did that. But is there anyway to actually keep it locked to those members? Isn't this one of the anti-community features that Valve has created with this game. Servers can't be reserved and are communal property for all to play? That and the broken auto-join are a step backward.

I've noticed this too. Could never get a good server when it first launched. Then all of a sudden it was nothing but green servers. And then I took a couple days off and the last couple days have been back to orange/red. What happened to all the green?

So if I get the group ID number, it will show up on the title screen (as well as "Play on Steam Group Server" options) with the NeoGAF logo and be directly joinable.

I believe they also added a server flag (sv_steamgroup_exclusive) so that it won't be allowed to be used for matchmaking and would only show up in that group server list. I'm not clear if that actually locks out anyone not in that group, but

I'm happy to do all of that (I may have to get some of my coworkers into the GAF group...), but I can't do anything without the group ID #. Presumably this was done so that people can't randomly attach servers to groups and grief them ("CLAN SOANDSO EAT DICKS L4D Public Server").

It seems like Valve is still working to make the server admins happy in bits and pieces, so I imagine this stuff will shake out gradually.

It does work

sv_steamgroup_exclusive 0 - No exclusivity
sv_steamgroup_exclusive 1 - Exclusive until community member joins
sv_steamgroup_exclusive 2 - Always exclusive, no matter what

not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread, since 8200 posts is a lot to go through, but has anyone had Francis answer the radio at the end of Blood Harvest and tell the military that the survivors are cops? it's actually pretty funny, if only because they wrote a response specifically about that.

Just played some co-op on the 360 today. Had a an absolute blast. Didn't have any problem finding players. Actually when one person dropped out, it was a wait of a few seconds to have someone else jump in to take their place.

I know I won't get the PC mods, but the experience on the 360 is great.

I was playing the other day and didn't hear it myself, but a guy I was playing with commented that he heard it. :lol :lol

Bill: "If I start to turn, promise you'll shoot me!"
Francis: "What if your beard starts to turn? Can we shoot that?
Bill: "..."

*approaching trailer* Bill: "Francis, does this look like home to you?"

Francis:
"I hate hospitals"
"I hate train yards"
"I hate subways"
"I hate small towns"
"I hate airports"
"I hate tunnels"
Bill: "Francis, is there anything you don't hate?"

I played the most BS game yesterday. Someone on my friend's list invited me to join a game with his friends. Two of my other friends joined and they were on the opposite team and then 2 strangers joined as well. Two of us made it down to the subway's saferoom on map 1 just to be greeted by a Tank. No problem, we ran ahead of him to the door and somehow we were *magically* pushed back and he somehow got in front of us and blocked the door.

We were losing by about 1k in points. On the hospital map, I could hear the tank right after I loaded. I have NEVER played a game where a Tank loads that quick. So we said lets wait until his meter is down before we open the door. Somehow the door *magically* opened.

So now we're down by 2k points, maybe we still have a chance right? On finale, the other team gets a Tank right at the elevator. Down by 2k points and yet the other team got an advantage over us? We didn't get the extra tank like they did. The AI Director definitely needs some work, but I am sure someone on the other team cheated. I've heard that if sv_cheats1 is on, you can open doors through the console command. Anyone know how to check if the cheats are on a server?

Valve needs to fix the team swapping and only allow normal non-modified servers to be on the *dedicated servers* list.

all you do is talk and it activates, there's no speak button to press or anything. if you're using the headset that came with the 360, there's volume control and an on/off button on the cord. That way if you have to cough or talk to someone in the room, you can just turn the mic off. I did that a few times and forgot to turn it back on. you can set other people's voices to play through the headset earpiece or through the tv speakers/your sound system in the xbox menus

this is your first 360 game? you sure did pick a wild one!

Heh, I was joining a random game yesterday and when I entered, it was only me and one other player with two computer players versus a full team.

When I entered, all I heard was a extremely young boy (he said he is five) who was talking to the computer players as if they were real people. I was going to leave, but... he was telling them that Left 4 Dead was his Christmas present and this was his first time playing. I was all "awwwww" and then felt so bad and decided to put on a good show for the kid.

He was all "Who are you now, the fat man? The jumper?" And I'd be "I'm going to be...the tongue guy!" And he's all "I love the tongue guy! My daddy loves to play him." Then when he would die (this is versus, remember), he would beg me to find a closet saying "When me and my daddy play, he always finds me and rescues me." This is heartmelting stuff, people!

He started screeeeeaming when he became the tank, just fucking screaming. "OH WOW I AM THE TANK BAM BAM BAM THESE GUYS I AM GOING TO PUNCH THEM WATCH ME OLD GUY BILL WATCH ME OLD GUY BILL (Note: I am Old Guy Bill)".

It was really cute, and I played with him until the conclusion of all the rounds. I am no scrooge!

Toward the end, RubxQ joined with me so he knows what I am talking about.

Server update: things are almost 100%. Having a weird issue where the characters can't speak, opened a ticket with my host.

Also found out there's a way to get lobbies to match up with servers more easily. Whoever the lobby lead is has to set a sv_search_key that matches the one I set on the server. So that person should go into the console and type:

sv_search_key "believe"

If you'd rather go through the server browser, the address is 208.43.110.21.

Still not bound to the GAF Steam group yet.

Really? Because I've been in games waiting for people to open the door so I could spawn and they just take their time in there. Even if that's so, there is a console command to open safe doors. If they didn't cheat, the AI Director needs some serious rebalancing. Being up by 2k points should NOT give that team the advantage.

This happened to me once on the same map(360 version). Once the map loaded and we all just started, the Tank music was the first thing we heard.

Actually, I never hear this *Tank Music* everyone is referring to. What exactly does it sound like? Is everyone referring to his growl? Sometimes people would tell me Tank Incoming when I didn't hear a damn thing. The reason why I knew he was there that time was because it felt like an earthquake.

i guess now people are catching on to the fact you can block certain "must pass" doors with objects, preventing the team from ever winning >_<

On the opening of Dead Air, you can get stuck on the forward left corner (when heading towards the door), and you CAN'T get off of it. It sucks.

I was Louis on the finale of Dead Air, and I jumped onto a pile of luggage near the mounted gun. I got stuck in the pile, and about 4 seconds later, Louis started screaming on his own and then died instantly. Waste of a medkit. :(

Do you mean cars/dumpsters, Amirox? ~2 weeks ago on vs, I smacked a car into the subway stairs, and about 40 seconds later, the car disappeared.

Shivering Isles was not free.
And the TF2 updates will be paid.

It seems very unlikely to me that extra content will be free on 360. Ultimately, Microsoft decides what goes on the marketplace.

Well I checked and I had my Music settings to about 2/10. I Think it's 5/10 now and I still don't hear it. Maybe I have to crank it up all the way?

You're right. During the horde event on Map 2 of No Mercy, the other team knew the tank was coming so they waited. When it was our turn, our team didn't know and someone pushed the button right away. We managed to kill tank but the last survivor got tongued by smoker.

I never said it was.

And regarding pricing on 360, I choose to remain optimistic. Burnout Paradise got a ton of free content, so it's certainly not impossible.
