The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Played Death Toll, got hunter pounced with the boat in sight. 10 hp on my last stand.

Insta-death. Someone call the cops I just got robbed of an achievement.

My brother and I were playing a VS match and our teammate wanted me to kick the person playing as Zoey because they didn't have a mic. He spent the entire round repeating shit into his mic that the game already tells you. I know you are using a medkit, that's what the character announcing it is for. I know that someone got pounced, that's what the UI is for. I know that there is a boomer approaching behind and to the right...that's what my fucking 5.1 system is for.

That seems to be the average for players that require mics...they spout off redundant information, bellow out poorly thought out tactics, and have mild control issues...not saying everyone is like that but the majority that I've met that think mics are all important are blithering idiots.

Well, I'm talking about PC, where it has a whole bunch of keyboard say things, and typing should take 5 seconds or less. Isn't the only thing on 360 you can 'say' without a mic the "look" command? On PC, it isn't really a problem on either game mode. I know I don't go "Hey I'm going to Boomer these guys in a second", I spawn up close and barf instantly. That doesn't really need to be planned out, on PC at least. I've won and lost the same amount of matches with no mic people and 3 mic people. Perhaps it is different on 360 if "look" is all you can "say", but if you know how to play the game, one certainly is not a requirement to win or do well, and having one is by no means a guarantee of victory. But we're talking about 2 different versions of the game with different options.
All true points, but the fact remains that having a microphone to relay certain information is a clear value added.

A great team without mics will be better with them.

Yeah, mostly it's just saying obvious things most of the time. Plus, people with mics tend to think they are running the show, trying to direct people how to play. I'll type out some stuff for people that are in bad positions or new to the game, though. But if they're competent, no one needs to be ordered around on how to play the game or what is going on constantly.

No microphone, even though you consistently play better than the rest of us and singlehandedly carry us through the game? Get your ass off the fuckin' server. Only us big boys with $20 RadioShack mics are allowed to play in this elite gaming tier.

"There's a Hunter and that balcony! Kill the Hunter"
"Okay, now when the boat comes, everyone get on"

No shit.

Maybe if you could turn the character voices off and have all comm through the mics.
You want the game to give less information to suite RubxQub's and Amir0x's personality quirks?

Player skill and the use of a microphone are not linked. Having and using a microphone just increases the odds of the entire team being in-sync while playing through, and also increases the joy of playing the game by lamenting on the events that transpire.

I really can't believe so many of you are getting all crazy about this.

I always have my mic on but I'm usually pretty quiet. If I'm down or I'm going to help someone and the others are too far away to see I'll let them know.

What I've started to do now is bind 'molotov over here' to a certain key and pretend that I've found one and want my teammate to pick it up. When he comes over to pick it up, I just run away and use the laugh command a few times.

Maybe if you would update to a FOUR-BY-FOUR we would all stop.

Are going to be able to get on Thursday? What about tomorrow? Oh, and you said you would only take an HOUR'S break and then be back on! You lied to me. And that made me angry.

You won't like me when I'm angry.
I turn green. Greener than a boomer as a matter of fact.

No shit.
You guys are so obsessed with describing situations where microphones aren't needed that you are ignoring all the possibilities where the mic makes things clearer, faster.

Yeah, that's more evil than the "ammo here" one, which doesn't really fool anyone. But who knows, maybe there IS a molotov or pills somewhere. But on the flipside, I know when I hear whoever you are using start going "pipipillpipipills", that something has grabbed you.

No situation in the entire game, campaign or vs mode, needs a mic on PC.

Correct. It doesn't NEED it, but it will IMPROVE it. That has been my argument this entire time.

The self-appointed leader who barks orders into his mic on public Expert runs... he's going to get accidentally crowned a few dozen times by my autoshotty.

So you are 3 hunters and a boomer. Hunter 1 is about to pounce on a guy, but hunters 2 and 3 aren't near them yet.

"Hold up dude, we're almost there and we can jump 3 of them at the same time"

So you're a survivor and you get to the second ladder in No Mercy 5. You hear hunters and smokers up there.

"I have a molotov and will throw it on the roof, so don't go up yet"

So a tank is coming at your team.

"Don't waste your Molotov, I'll use mine"

...would you like me to keep going?

I just imagined how much more annoying i'd be if I had a microphone. (Although you don't run off anymore, good boy!)

No, it wouldn't, on PC. The main times on campaign where a "plan" would be useful is before a crescendo or finale, where the game doesn't throw out any special infected or hordes at you.

Yes, having to actually type what I say and then go through with it by hitting enter has been a saving grace. If I had the ability to go "hey stupid, get this fucking hunter off me", I'd start to be left to die by people.

Haha, this has happened so many times. I think just yesterday, we all got puke on and 3 of us threw pipe bombs at the same time.

(ALTHOUGH I WAS THE FIRST AND MY TEAM SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER AND STUFF)

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm absolutely certain in my opinion on this matter, and it would seem you are certain of yours as well.

I actually like it when people talk in the game I'm playing. It's even better when all-talk is on and I can hear the opposing team, it makes the game feel more lively.

Characters say "fire in the hole", so if someone says that and you see a molly fly up past you, common sense tells you to come back down. No one should need to be told to do that.

RubxQub said:

Characters say "fire in the hole", so if someone else says it first, you let them throw their molly. If they hesitate and you have a shot, it's easy to throw yours instead.

No, that (also) isn't necessary.

As I said, let's just let it die.

I know I'm right, but it doesn't matter anymore. We've beaten this dead horse to shit, and I like you too much to carry forth.

On some youtube video, I remember seeing the achievements on the 360 version. It said there were 50? What is the 1 that isn't on 360? Doesn't seem to make much sense to not have whatever the 51st is.

Outbreak, according to Daigoro.

Then if you had a 360, we would not be playing together if I hosted the server. I'm sorry.
Good. I wouldn't want to play with an elitist like you anyway.

Thankfully, I will never, ever play a game like this on 360, so I won't have to run into you, even by accident.
My points stand, and I'm 100% correct on them, unarguably.
Irrefutably, your arguments are opinions, and other people have their own opinions. Here's a hint, guy: you can't win "I'm right, and you aren't!" shouting matches.

As long as it isn't "KILL TWIG" I don't care! :D

Last point on this unless someone else brings it up.

It is not an opinion that adding a microphone to the equation of a good team improves their gameplay. There is no opinion in this statement.

If you take 2 teams of equal skill and have them play each other 1000 times, one team with mics and the other team without mics, the the team with mics will always win more games.

The only reason my above statement can't be called "fact" is because no one's done this exact experiment, but as someone who's played leagues in first person shooters, it's insane to me to hear people say that microphones add no benefit.

RubxQub said:

+1

makes the game sooo much better. I would put my money on a team with mics over a team with out. How anyone can beat the game on expert without mics is beyond me

Lots of new players lately, due to Christmas. It's super-fun and super-frustrating at the same time.

After a while you start to just expect people to do the rational thing, but then you get the new guys that are like, "I've never played this map before" and they run off into the wilderness when you're not looking, only to get smoked :lol

Does anybody know how to make a regular video (avi I guess) out of a demo? We had a cool vs game where one guy got smokered and the gas station blew up on him, but I just recorded the finale as infected, to show the guys I played with the angry tank thing. I don't know how to convert a demo from the PC version into a regular video file though..any help would be appreciated.

Demo itself is here (5.5mb): http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/nm5test.dem
