The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

what I usually do with my expert runs (which are 99% of the time me and 2 friends I've been gaming with for years, since like Starcraft and shit) is whoever doesn't have the auto shotgun goes and gets the tank's attention, and then we molotov him if at all possible (or set him on fire some other way) while whoever does have the auto shotgun chases the tank, as the tank chases the first person, and unloads on him. he changes up his targets just enough that it's not foolproof, but with 2 auto shotguns it's pretty easy to kill a tank with nobody dying (and sometimes not even anyone getting incapped) on expert. it kind of sucks for the guy with the AR/sniper since they're just bait, but it's not too bad.

I think I need new music, too, but I don't know what. I'm definitely burned out on the same like, 3 songs that are repeated over and over in every campaign/situation.
 
The game was released a few weeks ago and I'd like some thoughts on the 360 version, for those of you that prefered to pick that one over the PC version (you fools!)

- How is the lag? Is it as bad as in The Orange Box 360?
- How is the game finder? Is it as bad as in The Orange Box 360?
- How is the lag-meter? Is it as bad as in The Orange Box 360?

And does someone here, by any chance, own both versions? And could you tell me if there are major differences other than the stick/mouse obviousness.

I didn't want to buy that game day one because I felt ripped off with Orange Box (only for TF2, actually) but I feel the urge to buy that game asap. I need your Testimonies L4GAF360!

Oh, and for anyone telling me to pick up the PC version, I would, but I can't.

I have experienced less lag in L4D than any other 360 shooter. I don't really use the 'game finder' because I play with friends 90% of the time, but you can hop into into a quick match (usually on a dedicated server) in seconds. Just don't expect the teams to be fair, or for anyone to stick around very long if they're losing.

I don't own both versions, but I've played both. Besides stick/mouse obviousness, there are no differences in how the standard game plays, except that the PC version has some exploit fixes the 360 doesn't. That said, the autoaim on 360 is quite noticeable, more so than in other console shooters. Also, I stress 'standard' games because in six months or less (the SDK is coming) people are going to be adding all sorts of unofficial content/wackiness/mods on PC. But if you're okay with missing out on that, it seems like Valve is going to be straight on simultaneous official DLC this time around.

So really nothing should discourage you from getting it on 360. It's become my second favourite game for the system.

I finally bought the PC version after 100 hours 360ing. Holy crap, the game is 1000x easier, I finished single player No Mercy Expert with almost zero issues... mouse control for the win. On the 360, I never even got passed No Mercy 2!

Once I work out how to connect my PS3 Bluetooth headset, I'll join in for some Gafaction.

PS. Anyone use a Bluetooth headset? How on earth do you connect it to a PC? I can get the thing discovered, add it to my Bluetooth list and apply the settings, but the next time I look at the window, it's gone. No way I'm playing this online without a headset; PC literate people, please help!
 
How important is voice communication in this game? I started to play it yesterday and I would love to play some games with you guys but I'm hesitating to try the onlinemode because I can't speak.

Well technically I'm able speak but because of a serious illness some years ago my voice is very quiet and makes a rasping sound. On top of that it's exhausting, so I don't speak for most of the time.

There are keybinds and mouse gestures and text typing and you can communicate fine. It's probably much EASIER to do expert mode effectively (or the best teamwork in versus mode) with voicechat, but it's not required. Bringing this topic up will result in two pages of argument in this thread, though. =P

It is entertaining sometimes, though. Yesterday (when I failed horribly with my team) I was on PillowKnight's team for once. All of us besides Pillow were using mics and communicating pretty well, and we're about to go around a witch...or so I thought. I see Pillow's text warning "cover me guys" at about the same time I see the game message pop up [!] PILLOWKNIGHT HAS DECIDED TO ATTEMPT SUICIDE USING THE WITCH. :lol We saved him though.

In less nasty phrasing, communication is pretty vital in the game. Some people go as far as to kick people that don't have mics.
 
most dont though. i dont consider having a mic vital but it is a nice addition. what is more vital is if there are people on mics speaking you should type hello saying you dont have a mic etc and be able to hear what people are saying....

as on one run through we were on mic except for one guy who didnt really respond and we hit a tank upon realising he had the only molotov we were shouting at him to throw at (as he hadnt at that point) it was only afterwards we found out he was french and couldnt understand a thing we said lol :) so we started typing more after that (he could read english reasonably it seems). most people will be far more reasonable then you might have heard.

whats worse is that it was pretty clear to me (without being a dick) that I was probably the best at the game or had the most experience, however, jumping out a window and landing AS the screen turns green and getting horde + tank attacked in about 10 seconds with a regular shotgun was pretty lame.

Must've looked like the worst player on the team at the end of that round. haha.

Mic communication is very useful but not absolutely crucial. Communication and awareness is key in this game but as mentioned, so much of the background info necessary is provided by the game's abundant built-in audio cues that if you have a competent team, direct communication isn't as useful as you'd think.

Also as mentioned, much of the problems would be alleviated by playing with people who's abilities you're familiar with and trust.

It's all nonsense. Don't let it dissuade you from playing online (Offline is zzzz boring). Sure, having a mic would be preferable, but I don't think it's actually necessary for anything but expert level runs. Vs and lower difficulties are absolutely playable with text chat and the expression wheel.

You definitely do not need to communicate at all in co-op. We did expert co-op yesterday and barely talked/typed at all and yet pretty much aced the campaign. Three players finished the first map at 100 health and two the second one. No restarts and the only time someone died was when we were screwing around.

Feels like I spend more time trying to join servers than I do playing on them.
 
Voice communication is handy but your character, and others, will yell out zombie spottings, items, etc. so it's not vital. Also, simply being able to hear other people and respond to what they are saying/doing nonverbally helps a bunch too. Don't let a lack of chat dissuade you from playing online.

Edit: Is there any reason that when going random teams Vertopci, Pop, some others and I are never teamed up together? Not like I would want to be on Vertopci's team or anything like that :D

That ALWAYS happened to me with PillowKnight (though he claims I was on his team once and left him 4 DEAD). He's always on the other team and crushes my team. So it figures the one time I'm on his team we lose.

clearly I'm not the problem here...right? RIGHT? ;_;

Yeesh, what is this slander. :lol Some guy last night was like "And of COURSE I know Blizzard". Have I gained a reputation for crappy teamwork? >.>

I mean, sometimes it IS fun to race ahead of your dying team and be the only one to survive in the saferoom, but normally I try to stick together and save everyone. I think I've been the last one alive quite a few times
which totally has nothing to do with me begging medkits off of everyone else

I just switched over to PC for this game and for TF2. I also wanted to ask about headsets. Is it always push to talk or is that configurable in some way? By default, I had to press 'V' to talk but I've changed that to MOUSE4. Is there some way where I can just talk without having to press a button and my teammates can hear me?

Configurable.

Settings (lower bar) -> Voice -> Select "Automatically transmit my voice whenever I speak."

There are a ton of online games with no mics. It's just harder to play Expert with no mics, but it's still fine to play online without a mic. I have a mic but I don't always plug it in, and I've never been kicked for not having a mic.

Awesome, thanks. Can't believe I didn't see that before. Is that just for Left 4 Dead or does that apply to other Source games as well?

L4D's my only Steam game, so I can't say. I'd imagine it works for all of them, though.

Don't let people dissuade you. You can absolutely play online without a mic. The majority of public games I enter usually have only one person with a mic, if at all. Hell, I have a mic and unless I feel it is absolutely necessary, I don't use it.

You're missing out on a lot of the fun of the game if you never play online.

Sorry I disagree. Mic is crucial in this game. Perfect example is we had a guy with no mic playing yesterday on our team. He lagged behind us while we were trying to sprint past a ambush spot.

Well he got jumped by a hunter (and being behind us) no one noticed he was down. So he got killed then decides to get on the mic and say "What the fuck you guys couldn't save me". Told him sorry buddy no one noticed, maybe you should of plugged that mic in and asked for help instead of plugging it in to bitch.

Personally if I see someone doesn't have a mic they get booted from the lobby. No mic equals huge disadvantage to whatever team your on.

I'm serious. If you don't ever check your teammates constantly in general, you're a horrible player, and don't pay attention to sound cues.

Apparently having you and the other two on the team equals a huge disadvantage. It shouldn't even take more than a few seconds to get the hunter OFF the player, even while boomed.

But there really isn't much benefit to having only one survivor in versus. The multiplier is still only *1. Go down in a blaze of glory, man.

Look here is the deal: some people have taken their preference of having everyone on their team use mics to an extreme where they're telling a person with an illness which renders him unable to speak to not even bother playing the game online.

Do you see what this fetish has wrought?

There are many competent ways to play the game, including using a microphone, the text chat, scripted voice commands, or, you know, common sense.

Fuck it, who is up for an "intuition only" game later? Have a mic? Get out.

I -told- you not to touch that darn thing!

All I will say about mics is that they are not necessary, they can help, and it's funny to have non-standard configurations. It feels surreal if you're the only one with a mic playing with silent teammates. It's AWESOME if alltalk is on, and all dudes sound the same, so everyone's constantly being like "I'm a boomer, behind them!" to try to trick the other team. Plus the opportunity for laughing like a hyena at your opponents.

I thought Volcano Man used a mic, but I'm up for a micless game this evening. =D
